Grilling out to benefit others Wyanet Locker hosts cookout every Saturday If you’re out and about most any Saturday during the spring, summer and fall, you’re libel to see a bit of smoke rising, accompanied by the sweet smell of meat being tended on a good-sized grill. While grilling out is not unusual at this time of the year, there’s at least one place in Bureau County where you can get a great Saturday lunch, while knowing your hard-earned money is going to help a good local cause.

At the Wyanet Locker in Wyanet, owner Scott Sabin, said the Saturday cookouts are quite popular — not just for those customers who enjoy a picnic-style lunch with great Wyanet Locker meats grilled fresh, but also the non-profit organizations in the area who reap the benefits of the Wyanet Locker’s generosity.

“I have a grill. (The group) shows up. They cook it.

They serve it. I give them all the products, the meat, the chips, the pop ... at cost,” Sabin said, adding he only charges them for the products that sell. All the profits go directly to the organization that is hosting the cook-out.

The cookouts run from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, and a host of regulars and first-timers come by nearly every weekend to have lunch, sit a spell on the picnic benches and eat a good meal.

Organizations that use the Wyanet Locker Saturday cookout for a fundraiser include several non-profit groups, like the Wyanet Community Club, the Boy Scouts, Bureau Valley school groups, church groups and more. All of the groups are from Bureau County with most of them coming directly from Wyanet, Bureau Valley and the Princeton area.

Combat-Do MMA in Princeton sending fighters to World Championships

PRINCETON — Combat-Do, the All-American Academy of Martial Arts, is prepping to do some damage at the Mixed Martial Arts World Championships in Las Vegas this summer.

Master Bob Schirmer started a new school in November at the academy, located at 413 S. Main St. in Princeton, after running a similar academy in Cicero for 23 years. Schirmer, the head coach of the U.S. Mixed Martial Arts amateurs team, said he is honored to send three fighters to Las Vegas.

Carlos Hernandez, the 2014 world champion, will be fighting for another title at 125 pounds. Sam Agushi, a two-time national champion, will be pushing for even greater heights in the 155-pound class; and Silvia Riaz will be throwing her 145 pounds around the cage in the women’s division. The World Championships take

place from July 4 through July 12.

Schirmer said Combat-Do had three national champions come out of one school in 2014, and three more in 2015 — although two were from different schools yet trained under Schirmer on the U.S. team.

Combat Do already has about 40 members in Princeton, but Schirmer said they are always looking to grow. He is working toward having a summer camp which will meet three time a week. The camp is tentatively scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon from June 6 to 17, and the cost to each participant would be $65 for two weeks of training. The participants would learn kickboxing, Thai boxing, judo, jiu-jitsu — essentially the Combat-Do gauntlet — and it will be a fun way for the young students to get some confidence.

“I was 6 when I started training, and now I’m 60, so I’ve been doing it forever,” Schirmer said, stating the sport can expand a person’s life experience and help them become leaders in

their community. “It gets kids off the street — out of the inner city — and allows them to travel internationally and compete in different parts of the world like Brazil, Ireland, Russia and China.”

Schirmer said if they get the kids in the gym young enough, their grades and their abilities usually skyrocket, as some have been able to land college scholarships. Hernandez just graduated from college on a four-year ride due to mixed martial arts.

“They feel a lot of accomplishments.

Their self-esteem, confidence and courage goes up, and that’s what our community needs,” he said, proud to have organized a fighting camp in Princeton. “I’ve talked with 12 nations of international competitors who want to come and train with us.”

STEM summer program coming to the area

OTTAWA — Camp Invention, the nation’s premier summer enrichment day camp program, supported by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and a product of the National Inventors Hall of Fame is coming to Central Intermediate School the week of June 13.

For students entering Grades 1 through 6, Camp Invention is a weeklong adventure that will turn the summer from ordinary to extraordinary through hands-on problem solving, using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Camp Invention provides an opportunity for inventive young minds to exercise their creativity and

use their imagination in ways they don’t normally get to in the classroom. Program participants do not realize they are learning and developing new skills as they build prototypes, take things apart, explore different types of technology and so much more.

This year’s Camp Invention curriculum is called Epic, inspired by some of our nation’s most brilliant minds including experienced educators, Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and developed in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Epic features hands-on modules like CrickoBot, where campers construct and per-

sonalize a DIY solar-powered cricket and a unique habitat; Epic Park, where campers work in teams to design an eco-adventure park; I Can Invent: Maker Studio, where campers brainstorm product ideas and build original prototypes using real tools and components found in everyday devices; and The Lab: Where Pigs Fly, where children can discover the science of slime, demolition, electronic sound, giant squid and coding. Entertainers announced for Chicago Blues Fest 33rd annual festival set for June 10-12 in Chicago’s Grant Park

CHICAGO — The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) has announced the full line up for the 33rd annual Chicago Blues Festival happening June 10–12 in Grant Park. The three-day festival opens on Friday, June 10, with a celebration of the 45th anniversary of Chicago’s Alligator Records and concludes on Sunday, June 12, with a special tribute to the legendary Otis Rush featuring notable friends and other musicians he has influenced throughout his career.

The festival headliners throughout the weekend include: Shemekia Copeland with guest Curtis Salgado, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials with guest Corky Siegel, Tommy Castro and The Painkillers with guest Toronzo Cannon, Fred Wesley and the New JB’s, Irma Thomas, Wee Willie Walker & We “R”, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater and Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters.

The Chicago Blues Festival is free admission and open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. Performances at the Petrillo Music Shell will feature headliners from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, continuing on Saturday, June 11 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 12, from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Friday, June 10 – Alligator Records 45th Anniversary Celebration The festival opens on June 10 with a salute to Chicago’s Alligator Records for 45 years of what the label describes as “genuine houserockin’ music.” Deeply rooted in the blues, several of the label’s renowned recording artists will perform at the Petrillo Music Shell to kick-off the festival.

2015 Grammy nominee Shemekia Copeland will headline the tribute with a sizzling performance of her many hits since her debut in 1998. She will take the stage at 8:15 p.m. along with guest Curtis Salgado, the award-winning blues icon and Alligator artist. The Petrillo Music Shell will open at 6 p.m. with Tommy Castro & The Painkillers with special guest Toronzo Cannon. The group’s funk and blues sound will delight fans with their guitar licks and high-energy performance. Always a crowd favorite, at 7 p.m. Lil’ Ed and The Blues Imperials will bring their rowdy blues show to the Petrillo Stage along with a special collaboration with Corky Siegel.

Saturday, June 11 – Soul/R&B Night Headlining the evening at 8:05 p.m. is jazz and funk trombonist Fred Wesley & The

New JB’s. Wesley is best known as the music director, arranger, trombonist and a primary composer for the legendary James Brown from 1968 to 1975. Best known as “The Soul Queen of New Orleans,” Irma Thomas will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. Thomas’ career has spanned over five decades and the Grammy winner is not slowing down. Soul legend, Wee Willie Walker & We “R” will kick-off the evening at 5:30 p.m. Walker’s latest release, “If Nothing Ever Changes” has garnered him three 2016 Blues Music Award nominations; Album of the Year, Soul Blues Album and Soul Blues Male Artist.

Sunday, June 12 – Tribute to Otis Rush Legendary blues guitarist Otis Rush arrived in Chicago from Mississippi in the 1950s after seeing Muddy Waters perform while visiting his sister. Rush worked tirelessly to establish himself as an innovative blues guitarist, bandleader, singer and songwriter by playing with the legendary bluesmen of the day. Rush set new standards and influenced countless blues and rock musicians.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters. As an award-winning blues guitarist, Ronnie Earl learned from Rush and considers him to be the greatest musical influence on his career and life.

The tribute continues at 6:30 p.m. with Chicago legend Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater. Known as a blues-rocking showman with his left-handed, upside-down guitar playing and his signature Indian headdress, Clearwater is among the very finest bluesmen performing today.

The Jackson, Mississippi Rhythm & Blues stage kicks-off on Friday, June 10, with a panel discussion on the 45th anniversary of Alligator Records at 11:30 a.m. Performances on opening day include “Miss Equal Opportunity,” Pat Brown at 2:30 p.m. and former Howlin’ Wolf band leader, Eddie Shaw & Wolfgang at 4 p.m. On Saturday, June 11, the Southern Komfort Brass Band will perform their unique mix of funk, blues, jazz, rock and hip-hop at 1 p.m. and with an additional jam session at 4:30 p.m. To celebrate the centennial of the “Great Migration” on Sunday, June 12, the day will begin with a panel discussion at 11:30 a.m. that includes blues artists Nellie “Tiger” Travis, Eddie Shaw and John Primer. The panel will be followed by a day full of the sounds of the Delta blues…with a Chicago twist.

The Pepsi Front Porch will start each day at noon and on Friday, June 10, highlights include guitarist, author, storyteller and oral historian, Fruteland Jackson at 1:30 p.m.

The day will end on a high note with the Legends of Blues featuring Sam Lay, Corky Siegel and Marcella Detroit at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, June 11, at noon, Fernando Jones will present an international set featuring Jones’ Chicago band and musicians

from Italy through a collaboration with A - Z Blues and Italy’s Il Blues Magazine. The Pepsi Front Porch will keep the blues alive on Sunday, June 12, with blues/rocker Melody Angel at noon, followed by The Jimmy Burns Band at 2:30 p.m. A driving force in blues music today, John Primer & The Real Deal Blues Band will perform at 3 p.m. The stage will wrap up on a fitting note with the great blues guitarist Lurrie Bell at 4:30 p.m.

Blues fans wanting to get up close and personal with artists won’t want to miss the Southwest Airlines Blues Lounge. The lounge provides an area for festival-goers to relax and listen to music and stories from the heart throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The festival also features intimate performance areas, like those provided by the Blues Kids Foundation and the Windy City Blues Society. The Blues Kids Foundation area offers harmonica lessons and performances by the next generation of blues artists. The Windy City Blues Society, a festival favorite over the past few years, features an eclectic lineup of artists from Chicago and around the country. Leading up to the Chicago Blues Festival, during May and June there will be several preview performances and film screenings held at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Peoria Municipal Band opens June 5

PEORIA — The Peoria Municipal Band, under the direction of David Vroman, will begin its 79th season of summer concerts on Sunday, June 5, at 7 p.m. in the Glen Oak Park Amphitheater in Peoria and follow up in the Peoria Warehouse District on Wednesday, June 8. The 2016 Peoria Municipal Band Summer Season consists of 24 concert performances by a band of 50 musicians. All concerts are free of charge, and parking is adjacent to the performing venues.

The Sunday, June 5, concert is opening night! The Peoria Fire Department Color Guard will present the colors, and Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis will narrate the first half of the program. Illinois State University Professor Michelle Vought is the featured vocalist, and the Peoria Municipal Band Dixieland Band will be at the front of the stage for their Dixieland Jam. Sunday evening concerts in Glen Oak Park this summer will be June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Aug.

7 and 14.

Wednesday evening performances are presented at the corner of Water and State streets each Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

These performances will be June 8, 15, 22, 29, July 6, 13,

Two special Friday evening performances will be given this season. The first is at St. Philomena’s Church and School on Friday July 29, at 7 p.m. Then on Friday, Aug. 5, the band will

PRINCETON — At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, the library will have adult coloring for relaxation.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, will be a Monday movie about a young con man who is a witness when his friend and mentor is murdered by a racketeer and gambler.

Story times for prekindergarten through third graders will begin at 10:30 a.m., with fourth grade and older starting at 1:30 p.m. Bring a friend and join the fun and earn prizes at the same time.

On Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m., nationally renowned storyteller Beth Horner will entertain with stories and music. This program is for all ages. There is limited seating, so those who plan on attending should let the library know.

The library has added many new titles to its collection of books, movies and audiobooks.

Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday which is an ongoing program at the library. Come and go as you like between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

Those who have had address or phone number changes should update the library with current information.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The Selby Township Library has announced the Summer Reading Program: Read for the Win! All kids ages 3 and up are invited to participate. The program will include activities like Ag in the Classroom, the Forest Park Nature Center, craft day and Library Olympics. Children will be encouraged to read books to earn points. Children who earn enough points will receive prizes at the end of the program.

TISKILWA — Sign up for the Summer Reading Program, “Read For The Win,” will take place during the week of June 6 at the library. The kickoff event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the library.

Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, to discuss “A Great and Terrible Beauty” by Libba Bray. Refreshments will be served.

The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services. Call 815-659-3283 for information.

WYANET — In June, the Wyanet Library will host an Introduction To Smartphones and Safety Course presented by Illinois Valley Cellular from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. Smartphone education classes will be free to everyone. Lead speaker will be Rodney Tennison from Illinois Valley Cellular.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program, “Read for the Win,” will end on June 4.

Patrons may sign up during regular library hours. The program starts each Monday in June at 2 p.m. The library will have programs and crafts or games each Monday. The last Monday is the pizza party day.

OHIO — The library will be having its summer reading program this year again during the month of June. The program is held Wednesdays during the month of June at 2 p.m. There will be weekly activities and a month-long reading competition with prizes for the most books read. Summer reading kicks off on Wednesday, June 1, at 2 p.m.

LADD — Summer Reading Program registration is underway. The first program is June 3 and continues through July 8.

Pre-school storytimes with Mrs. Dempsey will continue through the summer on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Movie Mondays will resume on June 6 at 1 p.m.

The library will also be sponsoring its new “Perpetual Programs.” These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library any time patrons stop in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

Special activities this summer will include Game time, Bingo for Books, Selfie Scavenger Hunt, Minecraft Unplugged, and an ice cream party. The first special activity will be Minecraft Unplugged presented by the Discovery Center Museum on June 3 at 1 p.m.

Children will assemble cubes, repel creepers, examine real rocks and ore, and create a torch. This program is recommended for those children in grades second through sixth and is limited to the first 30 registrants, so call the library soon at 815-894-3254 to reserve a spot.

The library will also sponsor an Adult Summer Reading Program this year. In addition, an adult coloring club meets on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and an adult card club meets on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

An evening of baseball lore PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library and Laurie Anderson hosted an evening of baseball lore for baseball fans from the area who filled the public meeting room at the library to listen to raconteur Phil S. Dixon present a glimpse of the old Negro League baseball players and teams.

Dixon became interested in baseball at age 7 when he started collecting baseball cards, specializing on the old Negro baseball leagues which became defunct shortly after the “color-line” was broken in Major

League baseball.

Dixon, a graduate of the University of Missouri, has been doing research on the Negro Leagues throughout his life and is the author of multiple books on baseball history Formerly employed by the Kansas City Royals in the public relations department he now travels throughout the United States and Canada with his power-point presentation complete with many anecdotes about past baseball history. He is a founder and board member of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

PHS golf PRINCETON — Princeton High School golf coach Will Gross will be holding volunteer practices on Wednesdays at Chapel Hill from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., beginning June 8. These practices are open for any students Grades 7-12, boys and girls, that are interested in golf.

Coach Gross will also be holding his annual camp July 25-28 at Chapel Hill from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

This is also open to all students, grades 7-12.

Spring Creek Juniors

SPRING VALLEY — Spring Creek Golf Course is preparing for the 2016 junior golf season.

There will be a camp for all IV juniors June 4-12; the camp includes five lessons with a fee of $65.

The junior league will be held Fridays beginning June 17, open to all IV golfers. Ages 6-8 will play five shortened holes; ages 9-11 will play nine shortened holes; and ages 12-13 and 14-18 will play nine holes.

There will also be skill building days open to all golfers July 11 July 20, July 29, Aug. 2 and Aug. 11 from 5 to 6:15 p.m.

The Illinois Valley Junior Golf Championship is Monday, Aug. 1.

OGLESBY — The IVCC women’s basketball team will have two camps this summer. The grade school camp is June 25-26.
