And the band played on The Princeton Community Band kicks off another season at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 4. All concerts are held on the lawn at Soldiers and Sailors Park on South Main Street in Princeton. Admission is always free, and event-goers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs. Mark your calendars for other Princeton Community Band concerts set for June 18, July 2, July 16, July 23 and July 30. All these concerts are on Sundays and begin at 6 p.m. The Princeton Community Band is an all-volunteer band. It was brought back to life in 2005 and conducted by Jeremy Lehman. In 2008, James Jones took over the baton. This year, Ann Lusher will conduct the band. To be a part of the Princeton Community Band, you must be entering high school in the fall or older; have your own instrument; and have instrumental experience. Making great strides for Cystic Fibrosis Fourth annual fundraiser walk to be held June 10 By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — The fourth annual Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Great Strides Walk will be held Saturday, June 10, in City-County Park. Princeton native Cheriz Kunkel started this walk in 2014. To date, it has raised more than $50,000 for the CF Foundation, which is working hard to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Kunkel has dealt with CF all her life and does 10 breathing treatments a day to keep her lung function stable. “Growing up and living with CF can be really difficult. Yet, the community of Princeton always made me feel loved and supported. People cheered me on in local 5Ks, visited when I was sick, sent cards (and) understood when I had coughing attacks in public. I’m forever grateful for this town,” she said. “I brought the Nationwide CF Great Strides walk to Princeton because the town has a passion for helping out. Plus, CF is not that common of a disease, and our small community has had over half a dozen people living with CF.”

SPRING VALLEY — Downtown Spring Valley will once again be hosting an array of activities for those attending it’s fourth annual Outdoor Fest. The highlight of the June 3 event will be performances by ILLConduct, the Harley-Davidson riding stunt team. They will be thrilling the crowd with their acts in shows at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in front of Uncle Stewy’s Roadhouse at 225 E. St. Paul St. Another motorcycle-related event which will surely please those in attendance are the burnout contests being held at noon and 2 p.m.. Sponsored by Uncle Stewy’s Roadhouse and Blue Collar Bikes, the grand prize will be the much needed installation of a new rear tire. Other outdoor oriented activities will include children’s fishing and archery; a youth .22 rifle competition; metal detecting; a shopping scavenger hunt with prizes; city-wide garage sales; the University of Illinois Natural History Survey Science Center; the Illinois Conservation Police Wildlife trailer; a display of the winning photos from the Spring Valley photo contest winners; and plenty of food, music and other vendors.

Kunkel was born during a time when there was no specific medication for CF. But throughout the years, the CF Foundation has made strides with medications to help ease the symptoms of this illness. Kunkel said in the past three years, there have been two new gene-targeting drugs come to market. “This means they help correct the defect in the CF mutations (each person has two CF mutations),” she said. Today, there are now even better gene-targeting drugs in the last rounds of clinical trials. Drugs that are more effective with less threatening side effects (like liver damage) than the first two, Kunkel said. “However, the gene correcting drugs don’t completely fix the problem, only increase the effectiveness. Plus, they are not for all mutations, which means only a portion of the CF community can take them,” she added. Lately, the CF Foundation has been talking about gene-editing. While it will be a while before defective DNA (CF mutations) can be cut out and replaced with non CF Mutations DNA, Kunkel said it’s progress the CF Foundation is starting to look at the option. “It is becoming a possibility. This would mean a cure.
Now we need to push more than ever to help this road map to a cure become a possibility,” she said. The CF Walks are the foundation’s largest fundraising event. “This Princeton walk is now a part of a nation-wide walk where thousands of people walk to cure CF. I know the permanent damage in my lungs means I will never see my lung function up past 60 percent, but we can stop it from progressing for everyone living with it and cure it for future generations with CF,” Kunkel said. At this year’s event, the goal to raise $20,000. Currently, Kunkel is looking for business sponsors and employer-matching gifts to help reach her goal. A Gold Sponsor is $500; Silver is $250; and Bronze is $100. The event is fun for the whole family. Participants walk for a cause and get to enjoy face painting, balloon creations, a DJ, silent auctions, raffles and lunch. Those interested can register online at fightcf.cff.org/ Princeton. More on 34 has become an annual weekend of treasure hunting in the Illinois countryside along Route 34 for bargain hunters, antique buyers and collectors from across the United States. Stores in Princeton will be open Friday night for the Summer Solstice — watch for specials in the stores. The Psycho Silo Saloon east of Sheffield is having a car and motorcycle swap meet on Saturday and Sunday. Stop by, shop for some parts and check out some live music — the bar will be open. On Friday, stop at the Wyanet Locker for a cookout to benefit the Bureau Valley Buddy Bags program for lunches for kids during school breaks. There will be grilled sandwiches and more. PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library will be sponsoring a twopart Plein Air Watercolor Program with local artist Dana Collins on June 5 and 7. Advance sign-up is required, and there is a 12-person limit for the field trip on June 7. Monday, June 5, the session will be held in the library’s Matson meeting room from 4 to 5 p.m. for an introductory presentation on the art of watercolor. Anyone can attend this day, even if they are not signed up for the field trip. Wednesday, June 7, participants will meet at Hennepin Canal Lock 11 at 11 a.m. (south of Princeton, north of Tiskilwa. From Princeton take Main Street south then take the first left east after crossing the canal.) The painting session will last until 2 p.m. Suggested materials to bring for the field trip are a backpack or tote bag, a wide brimmed hat, something to sit on, a support
for your paper or canvas and your own working materials. A full list of suggested items is available from the library by asking at the circulation desk. Along with saving money, in this class, participants will learn how to enjoy good nutrition, watch portions and calories, and even travel while eating healthy. CHICAGO — American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation (APRHF) will once again partner with Zephyr Route to provide travelers with an unforgettable fourday weekend trip to Missouri. The trip is scheduled for Aug. 19-22. Participants will get to travel almost 600 miles in a historic 1950’s full-length dome car though three Midwestern states. Aboard, they will be treated to meals that are cooked fresh aboard the train. APRHF Rail Rangers Interpretive Guides will provide fun stories about the many trackside towns between Chicago and La Plata, Mo. Participants will enjoy three nights at the railroad-themed Depot Inn and Suites Hotel in La Plata. They will also participate in a guided day trip through North-
east Missouri’s Amish Country and more. Then they will be taken to either Columbia or St. Joseph to see the total solar eclipse. The weekend with be capped off with a hometown BBQ cookout at La Plata’s trackside overlook deck and cabin. The trip will begin Saturday, Aug. 19, with passengers able to choice to board at any of the following locations: Chicago, 3 p.m.; Naperville, 3:35 p.m.; Mendota, 4:24 p.m.; Princeton, 4:46 p.m.; Galesburg, 5:38 p.m.; and Fort Madison, Iowa, 6:42 p.m. A full dinner will be served to all passengers aboard the train. The train will return from La Plate on Aug. 22, leaving at 9:55 a.m. with stop in Fort Madison, Iowa, at 11:08 a.m., Galesburg at 12:08 p.m., Princeton at 12:58

STREATOR— A pro wrestling show to benefit United Way tornado relief for Ottawa and Naplate will be June 3 at the Streator YMCA. Proceeds will benefit United Way Of Eastern LaSalle County in their efforts to help tornado victims recover and rebuild. The situation is especially personal for one of the wrestlers, who will be involved in this event. Tyler Marschang, known in the ring as Tyler Bodine, a board member at the YMCA and a wrestler for the RWF, tells about his very personal connection to this disaster. “The two men who were tragically killed were members of my fiance, Lynn’s family. She would appreciate your support as would I,” he said. Tickets for the event, which include an appearance by Streator favorite and WWE Hall Of Fame member Cowboy Bob Orton, are moving fast. A limited number of $9 second row tickets are still remaining. General admission is $8, seniors 60 and over, kids under 12 and active military are $5 with a family 4-pack available for $25. SPRING VALLEY — The 21st annual Bruin Golf Classic sponsored by the St. Bede Academy Bedan Club is scheduled to be played Saturday, June 10, at Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley. Team fees are $200 for basic registration, $225 for super registration and $250 for premium registration. Registration includes 18 holes of golf, one-half cart and lunch. If you are not a golfer, but would like to support this event, several sponsorship packages are available. Registration is suggested by June 7. Registration after the deadline will be accepted if space is available.

PERU — The St. Bede Bruins 3-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk will be Saturday, June 3, starting at 6 p.m. at St. Bede Academy.
The course is on the St. Bede campus and is cross country style. The race is No. 6 on the 2017 Starved Rock Runners Race Circuit.
