The water is rising!

Alexander Park Pool in Princeton will soon be full, clear and sparkling, ready for the first cannonball of the year.

It’s that time of the season to get a new swimsuit, dust off the fins and inflate your water-wings.

It’s also a good time to review safe water practices and sun protection to ensure everyone has a safe, fun and wet summer.

If you are interested in receiving swimming lessons, most pools in the area will be offering them.

Contact your favorite pool to learn their schedules, hours of operations and fees.

This year’s theme is your health, your way and will feature a presentation by obstetrician/ gynecologist Shrylena Bogard, MD. Bogard’s top is questions you’ve been afraid to ask your gynecologist. Dr. Richard Castillo will talk about varicose veins and there will be a self-defense class will be taught by the Peru Police. Illinois Valley Community College’s office of continuing education will offer a first and care of pets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday, May 30, in room CTC 221. Hands-on training will prepare participants with the knowledge, skills and techniques to help their pets in the event of a medical emergence. First aid topics will be covered for both dogs and cats. Participants will not bring their pets to class. The Starved Rock Radio Club will host its annual Hamfest at the Bureau County Fairgrounds Sunday, June 7. Flea market vendors will be located outside.

PAC announces summer drama camp registration PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council is announcing registration for the 13th annual children’s summer drama camp for children entering grades 2-9.

Camp runs for three hours, Monday through Friday, for two weeks. Camp will run June 8-19, with one session from 9 a.m. to noon and an afternoon camp from 2 to 5 p.m. The camp cost is $85 with special rates for siblings. Need-based scholarships are also available upon request for those who meet the criteria.

Each camp session culminates in the performance (noon and 5 p.m. on Friday, June 19) of an original play written specifically for the campers and, to a large extent, tailored to the needs and abilities of the campers. Campers in each session of camp name their own production. Children get the hands on experience of creating a show, from set and light work to costuming to performing.

Past theater-learning topics have included theatrical accents, sets, Shakespeare, costuming, stage make-up, mime, choreography for the stage, stage lighting and design, musical theater and opera. Camp activities also include theater and improvisational games like you might see on the television show “Whose Line Is It Any-

way?” and good, old fashioned “camp” games like Telephone.

Snacks are served daily.

“Children’s theater programming at PAC has always been about more than just theater skills,” said David Gorenz, PAC theatre director. “We strive to offer a safe, wholesome environment in which children can learn, grow, and have fun.

Over the many years that we have run the summer drama camps as well as other children’s drama programming, we have been privileged to witness the transformation of many of our children from ducklings to beautiful, talented swans. Fostering the growth of our community’s children is the greatest benefit of PAC children’s theater programming.”

Stage 212 announces ‘Aladdin, Jr.’ auditions LASALLE — Stage 212 has announced auditions for the children’s theater production, “Aladdin, Jr.” will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, at the theater, 700 First St., LaSalle. Children need to only attend one audition. A full production by kids, for kids, “Aladdin, Jr.” is open to all children entering Grades 4-10.

Director Josh Rinehart will cast approximately 30 children in a variety of lead and supporting roles. Children will be taught a song, a few dance steps and will do a reading from the

script. No advance preparation is necessary, but children should come dressed to move.

Flip-flops are strongly discouraged. All auditioners should bring a calendar with all of their summer conflicts.

“Aladdin, Jr.” will have performances Aug. 14-16. Rehearsals will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.

Stage 212 plans theater workshop LASALLE — Stage 212 in LaSalle is offering a summer workshop June 15-19 for students entering Grades 2-9 in the fall. Under the guidance of instructor Phil Grant and assistant Sophie Smigel, students will have the opportunity to dabble in many creative drama activities. They will strengthen their imagination, develop physicality and

learn to work with others creatively by engaging in improv, role-playing, pantomime, expression, voice exercises and more.

Oglesby prepares for Summer Fun Fest OGLESBY — Oglesby’s annual Summer Fun Fest will be back this summer, but a little earlier than its usual schedule. The festival, which will run from June 4-7 boasts a large musical entertainment lineup as well as carnival, children’s activities, fireworks display, 5K race, beer gardens, craft show, citywide yard sales, wine and beer tasting event and much more. The festival’s website, www.oglesbyfunfest.com, has the most comprehensive and up-todate schedule of events.

The festival activities

are located on the festival grounds near the swimming pools unless otherwise specified. There is no admittance or parking fees.

The festival stage will be packed with a variety of musicians. There is something for nearly every musical taste ranging from Kiss Live, Pamela Rose and Windy City Country and Hillbilly Rockstarz, The Buddy Holly Experience and more.

Some other festival highlights include the cruise-in at the root beer stand, Dave Dinaso’s Trav-

eling World of Reptiles, the Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team, pony rides, petting zoo, Art Sarver 3-mile race, wine and beer tasting and the popular kids party in the park. The theme for party in the park is old fashioned county fair featuring sack races and other old fashioned fun, cotton candy and watermelon, face painting.

On Sunday, June 7, the festival will go out with a bang with a fireworks display around 9:30 p.m. The 50/50 raffle winner will be drawn just prior to fireworks.

Peoria Municipal Band begins season June 7 PEORIA — The Peoria Municipal Band, under the direction of David Vroman, will begin their 78th season of summer concerts at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 7, in the Glen Oak Park Amphitheater in Peoria and follow up in the Peoria Warehouse District on Wednesday, June 10. The 2015 Peoria Municipal Band Summer Season consists of 24 concert performances by a band of 50 musicians. All concerts are free of charge and parking is adjacent to the performing venues.

The Peoria Fire Department Color Guard will

present the colors and Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis will narrate the first half of the program. Erin Moll is the featured vocalist and the trombone section will be at the front of the stage for their rendition of Lassus Trombone. Concerts in Glen Oak Park this summer will be June 7, 14, 21 and 28, July 3 (fireworks), 5, 12, 19 and 26 and Aug. 2, 9 and 16.

On Wednesday June, 10, the Warehouse District performances will begin. These concerts are presented at the corner of Water and State Street

each Wednesday 7 p.m.

Concerts in the Warehouse District will be June 10, 17 and 24, July 8, 15, 22 and 29 and Aug. 5 and 12.

Two special Friday evening performances will be given this season. The first is at The Shoppes at Grand Prairie at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26. Then on Friday, July 31, the band will perform at St. Philomena’s Church.

The Peoria Municipal Band was formed in 1937 through the efforts of Local 26 of the American Federation of Musicians and interested citizens.

PRINCETON — There will not be story times on Tuesday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 9, as the library prepares for summer reading.

Story time will begin again the first week of summer reading on Tuesday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. and continue through Tuesday, July 28.

SPRING VALLEY — Thursday, June 11, the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library will host representatives from the University of Illinois Extension who will talk about how music affects dog’s behavior. The program will be from 4 to 5 p.m. As part of the program, there will be a craft for the children.

Also, during the week of Monday, June 15, summer reading registration starts with children summer hours of Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 2 to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents and/or guardians are asked to come in during the children’s hours to register. DEPUE — Parents have the opportunity to sign their children up for the summer reading program: Read to the Rhythm.

WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library has added new books to its shelves.

Stop in, check out new books or check out a favorite book. The library also has books on cassette and CD. Call the library to find out how to download books on electronic devices.

Also, the library has a coupon exchange. Even if coupons are expired, bring them to the library. The expired coupons are sent to troops serving overseas.

TISKILWA — Stop in and purchase a raffle ticket for the library’s “Coaster Car” giveaway. The library received a Rolling Coaster Car, and the proceeds will be used for the reading garden. The drawing will be held on Saturday, June 27.

During Monday, June 8 to Friday, June 12, the library will have sign-ups for the summer reading

program. This year’s theme will be “Read to the Rhythm,” and the library will have activities and story hour throughout the summer. There will also be a dance party to kickoff the summer reading events.

OHIO — Wednesday, June 3, at 2 p.m. is when the library’s summer reading program will kickoff this season. The Forest Park Nature Center of Peoria will visit and present “Rhythm of the Forest.”

This program will feature a visit by a mystery animal.

The library will have more summer reading events throughout the rest of June.

LADD — The Ladd Public Library will again be offering a summer reading program for children of all ages. Children may begin registering for programs at the library. The theme this year is summer fun for everyone. The library will be offering a variety of programs for a variety of ages including movie Mondays, read away your Tuesdays and fabulous fun Fridays.

The library is also considering starting a Book Buddies program which would match younger children (6-9 year olds) with an older child (11-14 year olds) and would consist of the “buddies” meeting at the library and reading together for a pre-determined amount of time.

The idea is to form a

type of mentoring program where the older children help the younger children to keep reading all summer long and possibly continue into the next school year. The success and feasibility of this program would depend on the number of children, both younger and older who would sign up for the program.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m.

PUTNAM COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT —Thursday, June 4, at 6 p.m. the Putnam County Public Library District will host Coverage to Care, the Tri-County Opportunities Council’s informational program about the Affordable Care Act. Presented at the Hennepin Branch Library by Deb Roush, the program will offer details of how the Affordable Care Act works including important basics like how to obtain coverage, federal healthcare rebates, and

the application process.

MAGNOLIA – The Magnolia Branch Library will have a preschool story time for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years at 10 a.m. every Saturday morning. Stop in to enjoy a short story and related craft activity.

Stop in the Magnolia library from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday mornings for a Lego workshop.

Bring your imagination and create your own LEGO models. Lego workshops will continue every Saturday through May. This program is free and open to elementary school age children and teens.

HENNEPIN – Preschool story times are at 2 p.m. every Tuesday and at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Join the library staff for stories, crafts, games and more.

This program is ideal for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years of age.

After-school activities take place from 4 to 5 p.m. most Thursdays for children in early elementary school.

GRANVILLE — Join the

Granville library for stories and crafts. The preschool program is ideal for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years old. The more, the merrier – bring friends. It is held at 10 a.m. Tuesday mornings.

Homework Hour is available from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Granville Library.

The Granville Favorites Club meets the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Granville library. Each month the group meets to discuss favorite and not-so-favorite titles participants have read.

Join the library at 10 a.m. Thursday mornings for 30 minutes of stories and songs. This program is ideal for little ones under 3 years of age.

MCNABB – At 10 a.m. every Saturday at the McNabb Branch Library for children in early elementary school, April will be filled with projects that include musical instruments, wacky science experiments and awesome art projects.

Homework Hour is available from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the McNabb Library.

Even though the weather is warming up, there’s nothing better than a good warm bowl of soup at lunch time or as a starter for your evening meal. I like to eat soup all year long, and I’m hearing of many who also enjoy a hot bowl of soup regardless of the weather.

3/4 cup butter 3/4 cup flour 1 1/2 quarts half and half 1 8-ounce jar pasteurized processed cheese sauce Garnish: Bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled Combine the first seven ingredients in a large stockpot, bring to a gently boil for 12 minutes. In the meantime, melt butter in a small saucepan, whisk in flour until smooth.

Stir into potato mixture at end of boiling period; add half and half and cheese sauce.

Remove from heat, stirring until smooth.

Ladle into serving bowls; sprinkle with bacon before serving. Serves 18 to 20.

cooked and cubed 5 to 6 potatoes cubed and boiled 3 cups mixed vegetables Melt butter in a large Dutch oven, whisk in flour, salt and pepper. Heat and stir over low heat until smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat. Carefully whisk in half and half and broth, return to heat and bring to a slow boil. Reduce heat; add remaining ingredients, chopping into bite-size pieces Simmer until vegetables are tender. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Rich and Meaty Chili 1 pound ground beef 1/2 cup onion, chopped 2 tablespoons butter 2 15 1/2-ounce cans kidney beans 2 15-ounce cans chili beans 4 cups tomatoes, diced 1 6-ounce can tomato paste 2 to 3 teaspoons chili powder 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce 1 bay leaf 1 1/2 cups water 1 cup celery, chopped 1 cup green pepper, chopped Garnish: Shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream

Brown ground beef with onion; drain.

Place into a Dutch oven; stir in remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil reduce heat and simmer for one hour. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, remove bay leaf before serving.

Spoon into serving bowls and garnish with cheese and sour cream. Serves 6 to 8.

Cheesy Corn Chowder 1 onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon butter 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 15 1/4-ounce can corn drained 1 14 3/4-ounce can creamed corn 1 10 3/4-ounce can cheddar cheese soup 2 cups milk 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Cayenne pepper and salt to taste Sauté onion and garlic in butter in a heavy stockpot until tender, add potatoes and just enough water to cover. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add remaining ingredients; heat over low heat until potatoes are tender, about 10 to 15 additional minutes, stirring constantly. Serves 4.

Sports: Cross country, track and field; dance at Main Street Dance Academy Favorite sport and why: Cross country, because running is a natural stress reliever, also some courses are really pretty to view!

Favorite food and where to get it: Alan Special at Los Ranchitos.

Likes: Dr. Pepper, music, frozen yogurt, St. Louis Cardinals.

Dislikes: When people chew with their mouth open.

Person with the greatest Influence on my athletic career (and why): My mom, she’s always there to support me when I have a tough race or game, because I beat myself up a lot inside when I feel I’ve had a poor performance and she’s always there to pick me up!

Most embarrassing moment: Asking if the “L” on a box of gloves meant that they were for my left hand my first day working at Pizza Hut, and learning how to back out of a parking spot.

Instead of backing out I ended up doing doughnuts in the Sullivan’s parking lot and didn’t know how to stop!

Most unforgettable moment: Being serenaded by Ryan Lootens and Johnee Schulte because I liked somebody! So they thought singing “this magic moment” was the perfect fit for the occasion Ultimate sports fantasy: To run marathons! And qualify for Boston!

What I would like to do in life: Become a nurse in pediatric oncology, and on the side hopefully teach dance to kids who don’t get the opportunity, like to hospital bound kids!

Logan Camp PRINCETON - Logan Junior High coaches Hali May and Amy Vigars will run a volleyball camp from July 13-16. Sessions for those entering grades 5-6 will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. with those entering grades 7-8 from 10 a.m. to noon.

PHS cheer events

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Cheerleaders will have a couple fundraisers the weekend of June 13-14.

There will be a car wash and cookout at Sullivan’s from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13. They will host a Buffet Night at Pizza Hut from 5-7:30 p.m. June 14. Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children.

The cheerleaders will run their Little Tigers Cheer Camp July 8-10 from 9 a.m. to noon at PHS for Pre-K through 8th graders. Cost is $60 per camper. If interested, contact coach Emily Moats at Emily.moats1@gmail.com.

Bruin Golf Classic

SPRING VALLEY — The 19th annual Bruin Golf Classic, sponsored by the St. Bede Academy Bedan Club, is scheduled for Saturday, June 13 at Spring Creek Golf Course. All proceeds will be used to construct a study area at St. Bede Abby Academy in memory of the club’s longtime mentor, Father Arthur Schmit.

The event includes 18 holes of golf, cart, cart rental, lunch, dinner, refreshments and a gift. Awards will be given in the men’s, women’s and mixed divisions.

Cost is $80 payable by June 6. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. followed by brunch with a shotgun start at 10 a.m., utilizing a four person scramble format.

Optimist junior golf

PRINCETON — The Princeton Optimist Club Junior Golf Tournament will be Friday, June 5 at Wyaton Hills Golf Course.

Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. with tee off at 8 a.m.

There will be two age divisions (12-14, 9 holes) and 15-18. The older division will play 18 holes with the top six golfers qualifying for the last nine holes to determine the champion. Entry forms are available at many area golf courses. There is a $10 entry fee to cover green fees, awards and prizes.

Z Tour

PRINCETON — On Saturday, July 18, the Zearing Child Enrichment Center will again be sponsoring the Z Tour Bike Ride, a bicycle road ride originating in Princeton and includes many surrounding communities.

The event will begin at Zearing Park and will include the registrant’s choice of a 10-mile (group ride at 10 a.m.), 30 mile, 50-mile, 62-mile (metric century) and 100-mile (century) ride on specified routes throughout Bureau County.

The Z Tour Bike Ride will feature themed refreshment stops, mobile emergency first aid, water, air, and bike transportation. At the conclusion of the ride, each rider will be provided lunch at Zearing Park. A limited quantity of dri-fit T-shirts, cycling socks, and newly designed Z Tour Bike Ride jersey can be ordered in advance or purchase the day of the event.

Brian Church, Z Tour Bike Ride Coordinator, said, “We are really looking forward to continue to build on the success of this event and are hoping to host at least 700 riders. Our steering committee strongly believes that this area has some of the best cycling roads in Illinois and an orga-

nized road ride like Z Tour will showcase our merchants and surrounding communities. It is also a great way to promote benefits and services offered at the Zearing Child Enrichment Center.”

Bags tournament

OGLESBY — Oglesby Summerfest, which runs June 4-7, will host a bags tournament at noon Sunday, June 7, at the Elks property.

The tournament will host two divisions, competitive (Class A) and casual (Class B). This event is open to all ages, male and female. The casual division is targeted toward the occasional backyard player.

No pro-level players are allowed entry into the casual division.

Cash prizes will be awarded in both divisions. The amounts will be determined by the number of entries. Various prizes will also be given.

Every team is guaranteed to play at least five games. Teams registering by Friday, May 28, will receive complimentary T-shirts.

The entry fee for Class A is $50 per team, and the entry fee for Class B is $30 per team.

Check-in begins at 11 a.m. Class B begins play at noon with Class A to follow.

Tiger Baseball Camps PRINCETON — There will be two camps offered by the Princeton High School baseball program this summer.

The first will be a fundamentals camp from June 22-26. Sessions include: incoming grades 3-5 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and incoming grades 6-8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon for $30; and incoming grades 9-12 from 1 to 4 p.m. for $45.

The second camp will be a pitchers and catchers camp from June 29 to July 1 for incoming grades 9-12 from 9 a.m. to noon for $35.
