She was supposedly the first modern celebrity being a bigger draw at the box office than any of her other silent film stars colleagues. Pickford was also a sharp business person, she was the first woman to found and co-own a studio, she also made millions with her contracts that she negotiated and produced some of the era’s best respected films. Two of Pickford’s biggest movies happened 100 years ago. The library is celebrating its centennial with Pickford. According to Goddard’s bio page, “this portrayal explores Pickford’s remarkable career, as well as her unique legacy as a major film executive and enterprising businesswoman. And one will learn why her biographer, Eileen Whitfield, called her simply ‘the woman who made Hollywood.’” This event is free and open to the public. Open the can of sweetened condensed milk. Add the condensed milk, salt and vanilla to the melted chocolate. Stir until mixed. Pour the chocolate mixture into the foil-lined pan. Spread the mixture evenly with a rubber spatula. Put the pan in the refrigerator for about an hour and 30 minutes or until the fudge is firm. Grab the foil on two sides of the pan with both hands. Lift the foil and fudge out of the pan. Turn the fudge upside down on a cutting board and peel off the foil. Cut the fudge with a knife, and decorate the fudge with decorating icing if you want. Keep any leftover fudge (if there is any) in a container with a lid in the refrigerator.

The Fray to headline shows at Illinois State Fair It won’t be long and everyone will be coming up with recipes for graduation. Whether it’s a small or large gathering, Here are a few recipes that might help you.
Egg Salad for a Crowd 36 hard boiled eggs, chopped 6 celery ribs, chopped 3 large carrots, finely shredded 3 small green peppers, finely chopped 3 small onions, finely chopped 3 2 1/4-ounce cans sliced ripe olives, drained 3 cups mayonnaise 3/4 cup milk 1 tablespoon ground mustard Salt and pepper to taste Lettuce leaves, halved cherry tomatoes and sliced hard cooked egg, 100 bread slices (about 6 loaves) In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Whisk mayonnaise, milk, mustard, salt and pepper until smooth. Stir into egg mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Garnish with lettuce, tomatoes and sliced egg if desired. For sandwiches, spread about 1/3 cupful egg salad on one bread slice, top with another bread slice. Makes 50 sandwiches. For me, I would cut off the bread crusts and cut the sandwiches into 4 pieces.
Ham Salad 3 cups cooked ham, ground 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup celery, diced 3/4 cup to 1 cup mayonnaise Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Chill 2 to 3 hours.
Chicken Salad 2 cups cold chicken, cut up 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 cup celery, cut up Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup Miracle Whip Mix lemon juice, Miracle Whip and salt and pepper. Toss with chicken and celery. Serve on bread of choice.
Seven Layer Gelatin Salad 1 3-ounce package cherry gelatin 4 cups boiling water, divided 2 1/2 cups cold water, divided 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 2 cups milk 1 cup sugar 2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 3-ounce package lemon gelatin 1 3-ounce package orange gelatin 1 3-ounce package lime gelatin In a bowl, dissolve cherry gelatin in 1 cup boiling water. Add 1/2 cup cold water; stir. Pour gelatin into a 13-by-9inch dish coated with nonstick cooking spray. Refrigerate until set but not firm,
about 30 minutes. In a small sauce pan, sprinkle unflavored gelatin over 1/2 cup cold wear. Let stand for 1 minute. Stir in milk and sugar. Cook and stir over medium heat until gelatin and sugar are dissolved. Remove from heat. Whisk in sour cream and vanilla until smooth. Spoon 1 2/3 cups creamy gelatin mixture over the first flavored layer. Chill until set but not firm. Prepare remaining flavored gelatin as directed for cherry gelatin. Alternately layer flavored gelatin with creamy gelatin layer. Allowing each to set before adding next layer. Refrigerate overnight. Cut into squares. Makes 12 to 15 servings. It’s neat to do the layers in school colors. • I like to make the sandwiches with pimento cheese spread on one slice. Top with second slice and then put either ham or chicken salad and top with third slice of bread. Trim off crusts and cut in half and then in half the other way to make triangles. • Put out a platter of different cheeses, salami, assorted crackers, pickles and olives. Chips of all kinds and dips if you want. Then the traditional graduation cake in school colors.
Old Fashioned Potato Salad 4 pounds potatoes 12 hard boiled eggs, diced 1 medium onion, diced 2 cups chopped celery Dressing 3 cups mayonnaise 3 tablespoons prepared mustard 1/4 cup vinegar 1 3/4 cups white sugar 4 teaspoons salt or less 1/2 cup milk Boil potatoes in jackets. Cool and shred or dice. Add all other salad ingredients and toss. Combine all dressing ingredients and mix well. Pour dressing over potato salad and refrigerate at least overnight before serving.
SPRINGFIELD — Rock/ pop group The Fray will make a stop in Springfield this August to perform their chart-topping hits at the 2015 Illinois State Fair. The Denver-based foursome struck a chord with audiences, selling more than four million albums and 20 million singles worldwide. Their hit songs include, “You Found Me,” “How to Save a Life,” and “Over My Head (Cable Car).” Opening for The Fray on Thursday, Aug. 20, will be Andy Grammer. With hits like “Keep Your Head Up,” and “Fine By Me,” Grammer is the first male pop star since John Mayer to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles. The two songs sold more than 1.5 million downloads combined. Also performing at the 2015 Illinois State Fair will be the rock acts Styx and Tesla. The concert will be on Wednesday, Aug. 19. A headline act has yet to be scheduled for this night. “The 2015 grandstand line-up is starting to take shape, and has a ton of variety to offer fair-goers,” said ag director Philip Nelson. “When you look at this line-up you’ll notice there’s something for everyone both young
and old, and we’re not done yet. We’ve got more grandstand announcements in the works. I think the 2015 Illinois State Fair will be one fair-goers will remember for years to come.” Tickets for both shows went on sale through Ticketmaster on May 2. Starting Monday, May 4, the Illinois State Fair Office began selling tickets for these shows weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Prices for the Wednesday, Aug. 19, show featuring Styx and Tesla will range from $50 for VIP tickets to $28 for Tier 3 seats. Prices for the Thursday, Aug. 20, show featuring The Fray with Andy Grammer will range from $37 for VIP tickets to $15 for Tier 3 seats. Also new this year is the Country Concert Blowout package featuring Justin Moore, Rascal Flatts and Hank Williams Jr. That package can be purchased by phone at 217-782-1979 or in person at the state fair office. Pack the Place Purple On Feb. 20, Bureau Valley hosted the Second Annual Pack the Place Purple for Cora against Princeton. The turnout was even better than last year and it is hoped it continues to be that way in the future. The even raised more than $2,500 from T-shirt sales, silent auction, raffles, student council, and more. Julie Locke, who is the founder of the Dax Foundation, was presented a check from BV principal Eric Lawson and students Val Reuter and Bailey Russell.

SPRING VALLEY — The 19th annual Bruin Golf Classic, sponsored by the St. Bede Academy Bedan Club, is scheduled for Saturday June 13 at Spring Creek Golf Course. All proceeds will be used to construct a study area at St. Bede Abby Academy in memory of the club’s longtime mentor, Father Arthur Schmit. The event includes 18 holes of golf, cart, cart rental, lunch, dinner, refreshments and a gift. Awards will be given in the men’s, women’s and mixed divisions. Cost is $80 payable by June 6. PRINCETON — The Princeton Optimist Club Junior Golf Tournament will be Friday, June 5 at Wyaton Hills Golf Course. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. with tee off at 8 a.m. There will be two age divisions (12-14, 9 holes) and 15-18. OGLESBY — Oglesby Summerfest, which runs June 4-7, will host a bags tournament at noon Sunday, June 7, at the Elks property. The tournament will host two divisions, competitive (Class A) and casual (Class B). This event is open to all ages, male and female. The casual division is targeted toward the occasional backyard player. No pro-level players are allowed entry into the casual division. Cash prizes will be awarded in both divisions. The amounts will be determined by the number of entries. Various prizes will also be given. Every team is guaranteed to play at least five games. Teams registering by Friday, May 28, will receive complimentary T-shirts. The entry fee for Class A is $50 per team, and the entry fee for Class B is $30 per team. Tiger Baseball Camps PRINCETON — There will be two camps offered by the Princeton High School baseball program this summer. The first will be a fundamentals camp from June 22-26. PRINCETON — The sixth annual Jay Braida Memorial Golf Open will be held July 11 at Chapel Hill Golf Course in Princeton. This year’s recipient is Kamden Wahlgren of Princeton. His parents are Erick and Staci. He has two other siblings, Kaiden, 10 and Emma, 5. Kamden is in second grade and was diagnosed with Pediatric Auto-Immune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep in 2012. He was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and Toxic Encephalitis. MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School on Wednesday, May 27 for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Incoming fifth-grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. Clinic times are as follows: Seniors at 5 p.m.; juniors at 5:15 p.m.; sophomores at 5:30 p.m.;
eighth-grade students at 5:45 p.m.; seventh graders at 6 p.m.; and fifth-graders at 6:15 p.m. Students need to sign up and pick up a sports physical form from the school office. They must bring the completed form, including a parent’s signature and $10 the night of the clinic, or bring a parent with them. Forms can also be found on the school website. Lady Lions Camp
LAMOILLE — The LaMoille/Ohio “Hoop it Up with the Lions” Basketball Camp will be June 8-11 at LaMoille High School for all area students. The camp is open for all incoming kindergarten through second-grade students from 9 to 10 a.m. for $20. Students will shoot on smaller hoops to learn the proper form, and basic basketball skills. Incoming third- to fifthgrade students will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon, sixth- to eighth-grade students from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and ninth- to 12th-grade students from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Fee for the first child is $30, $20 for second child and $10 for third child. This camp is also open to any boy basketball player that would like to participate from the LaMoille and Ohio school districts. The camp will be taught by members of the Lady Lions coaching staff, current and former players along with special camp instructors. If registration numbers are down, sessions may be combined.
