Delivering more than just your mail Your area letter carriers are hoping you will help them during their annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, set for Saturday, May 14, in most towns/rural routes in Bureau County. Customers are encouraged to place a bag of non-perishable food items (must have a current expiration date) next to their mailbox. They will also accept paper items, personal hygiene items, baby items and dry goods. No refrigerated or frozen donations will be taken.

Home-baked or canned goods can not be accepted either.

Monetary donations should be made directly to the food pantry.

All food donations collected by your local letter carriers will be forwarded to the local food pantries in your area in Bureau County.

Grandparents turn out for lunch with their grandchildren

So many Ladd grandparents showed up for Ladd School District’s grandparent lunch that extra Ladd C.C. School District 94 held its Grandparent Lunch on Friday, May 6 and it was a tables and chairs had to be quickly set up in the adjacent gymnasium. Some took advantage huge success. Students were thrilled to have their grandparents join them for lunch, and of the beautiful weather and sat outside to enjoy their midday meal with their grandchildren. there wasn’t an empty seat in the cafeteria.

Community comes together to help animal lover in her fight against cancer

PRINCETON — About five years back, Frankie Wolsfeld found some baby bunnies in his backyard. He came to the conclusion the babies had lost their mother, and although he didn’t have a good grasp on how to properly care for the cute and furry animals, he knew they would not survive if he did nothing.

His daughter and wife — even the big-hearted Wolsfeld himself — they were all upset over the prospect of losing the bunnies, so they did some research on the web and stumbled upon Second Hand Ranch and Rescue, a notfor-profit wildlife rehabilitation center run by a kind-hearted soul named Nancy Johnson.

Johnson made Wolsfeld look like a hero in his daughter’s eyes by assisting him with the transport and progression of the baby bunnies until they were old enough to go back into the wild. When Johnson was recently diagnosed with B Cell Lymphoma — a curable form of cancer — Wolsfeld knew he and the rest of the community needed to give Nancy what she provides every animal at Second Hand Ranch ... the tender assistance needed to overcome trying times.

Rally for the Ranch will take place at the Princeton Moose Lodge at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The event will be dedicated to Johnson and her gracious efforts to the community. Silent auctions and live auctions, a DJ, a wing bar and much more will aim to raise money for Johnson and her animal sanctuary, as her medical condition is limiting her ability to perform her normal regeneration of the animal kingdom.

“We’re going to have runway auctions, but there’s a little bit of a twist on your usual auction,” Wolsfeld said, stating the runway auctions will be more like a skit, with characters sporting costumes, dance moves and entertaining theatrics used to hand out helicopter rides, Cubs and White Sox tickets, skydiving opportunities or invites to ghost-hunting adventures.

“It’s going to be a unique experience in that it’s not just the item being sold but the presentation, and we have a lot of people coming in from out of town to support Nancy in her battle against cancer,” Wolsfeld said, adding he’s honored to know a person as kind and compassionate as Johnson because so many animals end up at Second Hand Ranch and Rescue, and Johnson dedicates her life to the well-being

“My wife Karla and I got together with Fundraising Innovative Support Team (FIST) and contacted other individuals and businesses to put together a charity event for Nancy,” Wolsfeld said, noting Johnson is obviously not able to do the work she usually would in her present condition.

everybody to donate all the time, but Nancy is very thrilled and touched by the people trying to help her out.”

Wolsfeld said he started FIST because he likes to think people pull together as a unified force to help each other out when times get tough, and when strength and compassion is considered as the foremost goal, much is accomplished.

“People might think the word fist is violent, but you’ve got all your fingers, and when you put them together as a fist, it’s stronger than the individual fingers,” he said, adding people like Johnson are fabulous, and the community needs as many of them as they can get. Sometimes it’s easier to focus on the negative news in the world, but people are doing great things to help their surroundings every day.

“Let’s try to change the approach and share the positive aspects of each other so people can come together,” Wolsfeld added, aware people can’t give all their money away to every cause, but can give their time and energy — with a willingness to be a caring and contributing individual.

“You’ve got to have a passion to help people, and it’s a great feeling when you do,” he said, adding true generosity isn’t about glory or pro-

moting one business over another, but rather about building up every member of the community.

“Rally for the Ranch doesn’t pertain to my business, but it’s someone in the community who needs a helping hand, so we walk out of there knowing whoever we are helping is better off because of it. It doesn’t matter what their position in life is — we’ve got to help them out.”

PRINCETON — To celebrate Midland States Bank sponsorship of the cafe for the month of May, the Princeton Public Library is drawing a winner every Friday at 3 p.m.

People can enter the drawing by dropping a business card into the fishbowl at the cafe counter. The first week’s winner will receive a Midland States Bank insulated lunch bag.

The Princeton Public Library will offer a smartphone class to its patrons at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, May 24. The class will be led by representatives from Illinois Valley Cellular. Each class will cover the same agenda. Patrons are invited to bring in their phones to learn getting to know a smartphone, how to connect to WiFi, basic setup and overview, email, picture messaging, voice mail, the app store and how to download, and button configuration.

Patrons of the Princeton Public Library may now check out a Roku streaming device to use at home. Three devices will be available and can be checked out for one week only, with no renewals. Included with the device will be a remote control, an HDMI cable and the power cord.

Roku is a digital media player that connects to a television in order to stream content (TV shows, movies, videos, etc.) using an existing wireless connection. Patrons must be 18 years old and have a valid Princeton library card to check out the device. Wi-Fi availability and a television with an HDMI port is necessary to operate the device.

The library’s Roku devices come equipped with preloaded movies and many popular channels, including A&E, All Fitness, CNET, ESPN, History Channel, National Geographic Kids, PBS, Smithsonian Channel, The Wall Street Journal, The Food Channel and more than 50 others. Borrowers are not allowed to add or remove channels.

Devices can be checked out in person or put on hold by accessing their account from the library website, www.princetonpl.org. They must be returned to the circulation desk and should not be placed in the drop box stations.

SPRING VALLEY — The University of Illinois Extension will do a Wellness Wednesday Series at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library which is a free program to participants. Each class will be presented by Extension educator Susan Glassman, and recipe samples will be served. Learn some new ways to plan and prepare tasty, healthy summertime foods while keeping the kitchen cool.

Each class is from 4 to 5 p.m. The next class will be “Grilling and Summertime Salads” on Wednesday, June 8. The last class will be “Farmers Market Fresh; Cooking with Fresh Vegetables” on Wednesday, July 13. Phil S. Dixon, award-winning baseball author, will be at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library on May 16 at 6 p.m. with his new presentation titled, “The Monarchs, A Baseball Revolution.” The Kansas City Monarchs baseball team were the 1924 World Champions. Dixon will also speak about Robert P. Gilkerson from Spring Valley, a famous owner of a Negro League team.

LAMOILLE — The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services. Call 815659-3283 for information. (The fax number is the same as the phone number).

WYANET — The library’s computer class continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month through May. Dorene Stalter will answer computer questions. The computer classes start at 1 p.m.

The R.A. Sapp library’s last 2nd Thursday@ the Library for the 2015-16 season will be a stroke awareness program sponsored by the Wyanet Rescue Unit. On Thursday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m., Jan Pistole, coordinator of cardiopulmonary rehab at Perry Memorial Hospital, will explain the signs and symptoms of a stroke, the various types of strokes and the treatment of strokes. Pistole has 30 years of nursing experience and has been involved in the educations of EMTs, nurses and technicians for over 25 years.

Members of the Wyanet Rescue Unit will be available to check blood pressures following the presentation. Goody bags will be given to all attendees. As always, refreshments will be served after the program.

In June, the Wyanet Library will host an Introduction To Smartphones and Safety Course presented by Illinois Valley Cellular from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. Smartphone education classes will be free to everyone. Lead speaker will be Rodney Tennison from Illinois Valley Cellular.

Benefit to help former Easter Seals group at Skydive Chicago Big crowds expected at this exciting event OTTAWA — Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development (SRRC) invites the community to the second annual Celebration on Sunday, May 22, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Skydive Chicago, 3215 E. 1969th Road in Ottawa.

This event replaces the annual telethon the organization (formerly Easter Seals LBC) hosted for 34 years.

Admission is free, and the event will include music, food, children’s activities, games, raffles, crafters, vendors, food provided by The New Chalet and Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats, music, a live radio remote with Jack FM and a car show Presented by The Auto Inspector. There is a charge for some activities.

Sponsorships, crafter and vendor spots, car show participants, volunteers and donations are still being accepted, and 100 percent of donations remain in LaSalle and Bureau Counties.

“We are thrilled that the event is growing and expanding to include live music, crafters and vendors and the car show,” said Susan Bursztynsky, president/CEO of SRRC. “We are expecting hundreds of guests, and our goal is to raise around $50,000 to help us provide services to local children.”

Classic Car Museum opening in Springfield, Mo. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Guy Mace knows his cars — all 67 of them -— and soon the public can get to know them too.

On the eve of the 90th anniversary of the “birth” of Route 66, Mace announced he plans to open the Route 66 Car Museum June 15 on “The Mother Road” at 1624 W. College St. in Springfield, Mo. Patrons can see two Rolls Royces, the 1926 Hudson used in the 1939 movie “The Grapes of Wrath,” a 1955 BMW that is all original except for the fabric on the seats and a 1967 Healey that is one of only 125 ever made that were painted golden beige. His collection also features eight Jaguars built between 1954 and 1974, the Zombie Protection Truck from the movie series “Resident Evil,” a one-cylinder 1907 REO, a Gotham Cruiser and many other unique vehicles in excellent condition.

Mace, who began collecting cars in 1990 as investments, shows them off

by driving each of them. He decided that wasn’t enough, and it was time to share them with others more often by opening the museum.

Strolling through the aisles, he tells stories about each automobile, explaining their history, how and why he acquired them, and details about their engines, paint colors and more.

“I enjoy cars,” Mace said. “I enjoy showing the cars. I think it’ll be a great boon to Route 66.”

Springfield is a perfect location for such a museum because it became known as “The Birthplace of Route 66” after the name of the iconic highway was announced in the city on April 30, 1926.

Springfield also is home to the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival and Car Show, National Street Rod Association Mid-America Street Rod Nationals, the new C-Street Car Show for the Kilties, the June Bug Jamboree, Spyderfest and other car

shows and automobile events.

Tracy Kimberlin, president/CEO of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, said he’s thrilled a classic car museum is opening on Route 66 in Springfield.

“The Route 66 Car Museum is a great addition to the mix of attractions here in Springfield,” Kimberlin said. “Guy Mace has an amazing car collection, and I’m glad the public will get to see it.”

Admission for the museum will be $15 with discounts for veterans and children.

Brokaw benefit set for May 28

Fundraiser to help with expenses related to Peru Police sergeant’s medical condition PERU – Most police officers will walk the beat at some point in their careers. Peru Police Sgt. Jason Brokaw would simply like to walk again.

A benefit will be held Saturday, May 28, to assist Brokaw and his family as he battles a debilitating medical condition. The benefit, being organized by members of the Peru Police Department and the Peru Police Association, will run from 6 p.m. to midnight at the LaSalle Knights of Columbus at 209 Gooding St. Admission is $20 which includes food, a chance for a $500 door prize, cash bar and a silent auction. Raffle tickets may be purchased for a firearm donated by MMC Armory in Mark. Three bands have donated their time to play — The Craig’s; Road Angel, whose drummer is the brother of a deceased Peru Police officer; and 303, whose lead bass player is a sergeant on the Peru Police Department.

Brokaw has been a member of the Peru Police Department since 2008 and serves as one of the department’s firearms instructors. He was previously an officer with the Spring Valley Police Department and a deputy with the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department.

About two months ago Brokaw, age 42, began experiencing lower back pain, leg pain and numbness in his right leg. At first, he believed he slipped a disc, so he went to a chiropractor, but when the problem persisted he went to the family doctor who discovered lesions on his spine.

“He didn’t understand the urgency,” said Deb Brokaw, Jason’s wife. “In the beginning he never felt like he was sick.”

When Brokaw arrived at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, he was able to walk. Now the family is wondering if he will ever walk again. For these past two months, Brokaw has suffered from a spreading paralysis caused by transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord. The cause of the inflammation remains undetermined, and he has not yet tested positive for anything that would cause the condition. There were no warning signs of the paralysis-inducing condition. The Mayo Clinic is double-testing all blood work, lumbar punctures, and biopsies performed at St. Francis-Peoria.

Brokaw is a big Cubs/Blackhawks fan and is very committed to his children, 12-year-old Calvin and 14-yearold Hayleigh.

“Right now our biggest drive is to get him to his daughter’s eighth-grade graduation on May 26,” Deb Brokaw said.

Camp 56 open for registration PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of Princeton Theatre Group, will offer Camp 56, a two-week summer day camp for youth entering third grade through 2016 graduating seniors. Participants will have the opportunity to experience and take part in live performances, while immersing themselves in the many aspects of producing a show.

The camp is held in cooperation with Festival 56, which this summer marks its 13th season of bringing outstanding professional theater to local audiences.

Camp 56 itself is returning for its sixth consecutive year of providing a theater-based camp for young people.

The camp will be held weekdays from June 27 through July 8. Camp director Lisa Gadomski will engage campers in a series of fun-filled activities including song, dance, makeup, costuming, trips to the festival sets, and visits with cast and crew. The culmination of the camp experience will be an onstage appearance — as part of the chorus ensemble — in several performances of the Festival 56 production of “Guys and Dolls.” Three AmeriCorps volunteers will assist the director in introducing new, age-appropriate curriculum. the paint and supplies required. The farmers’ market would also like to give special thanks to Jay Schneider at the Apollo Theater for use of the wall space. The artwork will help celebrate the new home of the Princeton Farmers’ Market, starting

its second season located on the Frontier lot, at 439 S. Main St. The mural will be completed for a debut at the market’s opening kick-off, Saturday, May 28, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by to see the design, enjoy vendors’ goods and participate in kick-off activities.

Hall Volleyball Camp SPRING VALLEY — New Hall High School coach Demi Salazar will offer a summer volleyball camp open to all area athletes.

PRINCETON — There will be two sessions for the 2016 Princeton High School Baseball Camp.

The first camp will be June 13-17 for grades 3-12 in the 201617 school year. Grades 3-5 will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m., grades 6-8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon and grades 9-12 from 1-3 p.m. Cost is $30 for grades 3-8 and $40 for grades 9-12.

A pitchers and catchers camp will be 9 a.m. to noon June 20-22 for students who will be entering Grades 9-12.

Both camps will be held on Prather Field at Princeton High School. Camp instructors will include: Wick Warren, PHS varsity pitching coach and former and current PHS players.

Storm Basketball Camp

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley Storm Boys Basketball Camp will run July 5-8 with grades 6-8 meeting from 7:45 to 9:45 a.m. and grades 2-5 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The goal of the camp is for each camper to improve individual and team skills, and that the players can take the skills and knowledge they learn to become better players in the offseason.

MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School on Wednesday, May 18, for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Incoming fifth-grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic is not for incoming sixth-grade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete school physical.

Clinic times are as follows: seniors arrive at 5 p.m., juniors arrive at 5:15 p.m., sophomores arrive at 5:30 p.m., eighth grade arrives at 5:45 p.m., seventh grade arrives at 6 p.m. and fifth grade arrives at 6:15 p.m.

Students need to sign up and pick up a sports physical form from the school office. They must bring the completed form, including a parent’s signature and $10 the night of the clinic, or bring a parent with them. Sports physical forms can also be found on the school website.
