Helping the hungry Letter carriers all over the nation will be working together on Saturday to help fight hunger in the communities they serve. The 2017 National Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Drive will be held Saturday, May 13. This year’s drive marks 25 years since it officially began in 1992. To date, the nationwide drive has collected 1.5 trillion pounds of food. Just last year alone, the drive accumulated 80.1 million pounds. One of the best parts about this drive is participants don’t need to leave their homes to contribute. It’s asked that residents simply set out food next to their mailbox before the mail arrives on May 13, and a letter carrier will come by to collect the donation. All donations will be used locally at the food pantries which are served in the mail carrier’s location. Food pantries report the summer months are probably the most difficult for families, since children don’t have the benefit of free or reduced lunches and breakfasts at school. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive helps families get through those summer months, and often allows them to show at their local food pantry twice a month during the summer, rather than the normal once a month. ‘Mom vs. The Three Stooges’

MAGNOLIA — Most of us have at least one funny or inspirational story we could share about our mothers. However, most of us haven’t had one of those stories published in the newest edition of the well-known “Chicken Soup for the Soul� books. The “Best Mom Ever!� edition of the newest Chicken Soup book by Amy Newmark contains 101 stories about humorous, inspiring and loving moms. It’s also available just in time for Mother’s Day, and Magnolia’s Monica Morris is one of the contributing authors. Morris said she’s been reading the “Chicken Soup
for the Soul� books for as long as she can remember, but she said the one which inspired her to write for them was “Chicken Soup for the Baseball Fan’s Soul.� “I received that book for my birthday from my brother, and the combination of two of my favorite things, baseball and stories about faith, made me think that writing for the Chicken Soup series might be something I’d enjoy,� Morris said. Morris isn’t a novice writer though; in 2007 she completed her first novel, “Rory’s Song,� and in 2008 she was asked to join 11 other writers from across the country at the “Guideposts� magazine’s bi-annual writer’s workshop in Rye, N.Y. “I’ve had several articles published in “Guideposts� magazine since that time, and I’ll be participating in another GP writer’s workshop in May,� she said. Morris said she enjoyed sharing her story in the

Chicken Soup book because it gave her the opportunity to take a fond look back at some happy childhood memories. “The title of my story is ‘Mom Versus The Three Stooges,’ and it involves four kids, a harried mom and her clever solution to her children’s fascination with these three comical and somewhat destructive guys. I can’t give away the entire story ... You’ll have to buy the book!� Morris said. She said she enjoys the Chicken Soup books because there are as many themed editions as there are stories in each book. Morris enjoys that each book contains tales which can either bring tears to your eyes or make you laugh out loud, and sometimes it’s both. “I think what I love the most about the Chicken Soup collection is each story is an intimate story written by the person who experienced it. Each story
is fresh and has its own voice. It’s that quality that makes these books so special and popular. It’s an honor for me to be published in such a book,� Morris said. She said she’s enjoying writing for faith-based publications like Chicken Soup and “Guideposts� magazine because it allows her to use the creative process of telling a story to inspire as well as entertain readers “Whether I’m interviewing someone else so I can tell their story, or I’m reliving a memory of my own, whenever I sit down in front of my computer to begin a story, I feel blessed,� Morris said. PRINCETON — Many students have walked the halls of Princeton High School throughout the course of its 150 years. Some have also distinguished themselves on the path to greater achievements. To honor these former Tigers, PHS has established the new Academic and Career Hall of Fame. Created as a way to honor the past and to also encourage future alumni, those former students who have displayed exceptional levels of citizenship, leadership, and academic and career achievements may be chosen. The first class of alumni will be inducted during the halftime of the varsity football game on Sept. 8 during Homestead Weekend. “We want this to be an inspiration for our current and future students. There they can see role models who have gone to the same school as they did and went on to
excel both professionally and academically,� PHS Superintendent Kirk Haring said. Each year the Hall of Fame committee will induct new members during Homestead weekend. Nominees will be recognized for a high level of achievement in a combination of academic endeavors, career excellence and service to the community. Nominees will also have had to have shown a personal commitment to building good character, a dedication to lifelong learning, leadership and service within their chosen field. “Having to select the inductees has built a lot of excitement within the community, and the committee is ready for the challenge. The first class sets the tone for future inductees, and the more we talk, the more excited we become as we realize so many exceptional people have walked through our hallways here,� Haring said. Other criteria for induction includes having attended PHS for four years and graduating from PHS a minimum of 10 years before being nominated. Anyone may submit a nomination form, and all nominations will be kept and
can be updated at anytime. The yearly deadline for consideration will be June 1. A steering committee will help provide input and personal knowledge of nominees and their adherence to school policies and public appearance. They’ll also ensure nominees are good role models and representatives of the school district and community. Current members of the committee aren’t eligible for induction while serving, and they won’t be allowed to vote on immediate family members. The Hall of Fame display will be located in the hallway near the Prouty Gymnasium, and Haring explained community excitement for the project has resulted in a need for an extended presentation of memorabilia. “A lot of people have started to donate their school mementos, and it’s been a lot of fun to see all of the memories of PHS that people have collected throughout our 150 years; it’s been amazing, and we can’t wait to share them with everyone,� Haring said. A Tribute to Veterans needs strong flight of volunteers PERU — On Saturday, May 20, the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru will present the second annual TBM Avenger Reunion. A Salute to Veterans, will feature at least 15 TBM Avengers, a magnificent aircraft.
A host of other aircraft, an exciting airshow, helicopter rides, food and beverages will be available. Thanks to the generosity of Marquis Energy, the event is free to the public. More than 10,000 spec-
tators, pilots, crews and volunteers are expected to attend. Gates open at 8 a.m.; an all-veteran photo will be taken at noon, and air activities will be ongoing until 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed! Event planners are seeking
more than 250 volunteers. Volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in four-hour shifts for help with parking, assisting veterans, distributing water, crowd control, food service and general miscellaneous duties,

Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging sets public hearings ROCK ISLAND — Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging (WIAAA) Public Information Document (PID) provides a summary of the Fiscal Year 2018 Area Plan. BV physicals MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School Tuesday, May 23 for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Incoming fifthgrade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic does not include incoming sixthgrade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete school physical. Clinic times are as follows: seniors at 5 p.m., juniors at 5:15 p.m., sophomores at 5:30 p.m., eighth-graders at 5:45 p.m., seventh-graders at 6 p.m. and fifth-graders at 6:15 p.m. Students need to sign up and pick up a sports physical form from the school office. OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball team will host its annual basketball camp June 26-29. Camp for fifth grades 3-5 will meet 10 a.m. to noon; sixth through eighth graders meet 1 to 3 p.m. Preregistration is required and will be limited to the first 100 registrants. Registration is strongly encouraged by June 22. Cost of the camp is $50 per player and includes a camp T-shirt. Campers should bring their own basketball. PRINCETON — The Bureau and Lee County Farm Bureaus will host their eighth annual golf outing for supporters of Ag
in the Classroom Thursday, June 29, at Chapel Hill Golf Course in Princeton. The tournament will be a shot-gun start, four-person scramble. Tee time is 9 a.m. and lunch (provided by Country Financial) will be served for all teams during the event. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Bureau and Lee County Ag in the Classroom program. Team fees are $200 for basic registration, $225 for super registration and $250 for premium registration. Registration includes 18 holes of golf, one-half cart and lunch. If you are not a golfer, but would like to support this event, several sponsorship packages are available. Registration is suggested by June 7. Registration after the deadline will be accepted if space is available.

PERU — The St. Bede Bruins 3-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk will be Saturday, June 3, starting at 6 p.m. at
St. Bede Academy. The course is on the St. Bede campus and is cross country style. The race is No. 6 on the 2017 Starved Rock Runners Race Circuit.
