Helping the hungry Letter carriers all over the nation will be working together on Saturday to help fight hunger in the communities they serve. The 2017 National Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Drive will be held Saturday, May 13. This year’s drive marks 25 years since it officially began in 1992. To date, the nationwide drive has collected 1.5 trillion pounds of food. Just last year alone, the drive accumulated 80.1 million pounds. One of the best parts about this drive is participants don’t need to leave their homes to contribute. It’s asked that residents simply set out food next to their mailbox before the mail arrives on May 13, and a letter carrier will come by to collect the donation. All donations will be used locally at the food pantries which are served in the mail carrier’s location. Food pantries report the summer months are probably the most difficult for families, since children don’t have the benefit of free or reduced lunches and breakfasts at school. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive helps families get through those summer months, and often allows them to show at their local food pantry twice a month during the summer, rather than the normal once a month.
