Happy Mom’s Day!

Whether your mother enjoys some fresh flowers, a box of candy, a greeting card or an evening out on the town, area merchants are more than happy ... and certainly ready to help make your mom’s Mother’s Day one to remember. While the name of this special holiday refers to mothers, it’s become much more — a day to honor all women in our lives, moms, grandmas, aunts, cousins, friends, neighbors and more.

When it comes to gifts for the special ladies, about one-quarter of all the flowers purchased annually are bought for Mother’s Day. Carnations and roses are the most popular. In the United States, it’s estimated around 122 million telephone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day. The most popular gifts are cards, flowers, meals in restaurants, jewelry, gift cards, clothing, trips to a spa, books, CDs, housewares and even gardening tools.

In 1870 a female activist, writer and poet by the name of Julia Ward (she wrote the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”) suggested a day of peace and strongly advocated other women to stand up against the war.

From this plea she was able to get Boston to recognize mothers on the second Sunday of June. Anna Jarvis was also a woman who may have been behind our traditional Mother’s Day celebration on the second Sunday of May. Anna never had any children, but wanted to carry out her own mother’s wishes of having a day just for moms. Anna tirelessly campaigned and on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. OGLESBY — Conductor Lucia Matos will return to the stage of the Illinois Valley Cultural Centre in Oglesby at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7, to conduct the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra in its season finale. The program will include works by Felix Mendelssohn and Jean Sibelius.

Cheng was born in China to a very musical family. He began violin study at the age of 7 with his father, a violin professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in China. In later years he emigrated to Hong Kong, where he made his first television appearance. Christian Ferras, who was in the audience, was so impressed with Cheng’s performance he invited him to study under his tutelage. In 1980 Cheng obtained a scholarship to study at the University of Freiburg in Germany with Wolfgang Marschner and Florin Paul. After receiv-

ing his diploma, Yehudi Menuhin invited him to attend the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland. In 1987 he received his solo and chamber music diploma from Utrecht Conservatory. From 1987 to 2004, Cheng served as concertmaster in several European orchestras. In 2007 he was appointed concertmaster of the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra and since then has been serving as guest concertmaster for several major orchestras in China, including Tianjin and Sichuan.

The music of Jean Sibelius, a Finnish composer, will also be performed by the orchestra. Sibelius was a violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern peri-

ods and is widely recognized as Finland’s greatest composer. His compositions were mainly inspired by his homeland’s history and folklore. The IVSO will be performing “Andante Festivo” and the “Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, op. 39,” by Jean Sibelius.

Creating quite a ‘Ruck’-us Metro Center Ruck Challenge aimed at being a mysterious, yet fun, summer event

PRINCETON — Here are the known details of the inaugural Bureau County Metro Center Ruck Challenge on Saturday, June 25 … you sign up, you show up, you work as a team to exceed your own expectations, and then you celebrate.

Seriously, their lips are sealed otherwise.

Nick Davis, recreation coordinator at the Metro Center, said the idea behind the event itself is camaraderie between participants. The mystery surrounding the specifics is intended to drive interest and preparation, as the unknown circumstances ask for an unbiased approach to a journey of mental and physical exertion.

“A ruck challenge is different than an obsta-

cle course or mud run; it’s more so a group effort where everyone starts and finishes together, relying on the team throughout the way,” Davis said, adding those under 150 pounds will wear a 15-pound ruck sack throughout the event, with those over 150 pounds wearing a 20-pound ruck sack.

Davis said participants sign up, but they don’t know where they’re starting until they receive an email from Davis on Friday evening, June 24, informing them. Participants will interact with nature and go against its obstacles by relying on each other, but no one except Davis and retired Army Sgt. Shawn Sullivan knows where the journey leads or what it entails.

The ruck challenge will be anywhere from four to six miles long and could

take three to five hours to complete. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing they’re not afraid to get dirty, and the only way to prepare is to expect the unexpected.

“They say ruck challenges are 90 percent mental because just about anybody of any fitness level could walk six miles, but there will be different mental and physical challenges along the way,” Davis said, noting, “We’re not going to walk the whole thing.”

Davis said they’ve gotten an awesome response to the event so far, and so many people have been asking questions, but he calmly avoids providing specific examples with a laugh and a look of anticipation in his eyes. He was originally hoping for 20 people to sign up, but expects to easily exceed that number by the day of the event.

There will be a banquet at the Metro Center following the ruck challenge — with live music, food and a cash bar available to the participants and as many friends as they care to bring. Those who finish the challenge will be recognized with a pretty sweet medal “you can’t earn or buy anywhere else,” and maybe a few free drink tickets.

The Metro Center Ruck Challenge costs $20 per participant, and registration forms can currently be found on the Metro Center Facebook page, with a link on the Metro Center website coming soon. Participants can sign up until 6 p.m. on Friday, June 24.

“This is a challenge, not a race, so there is no first place,” Davis concluded.

“We just want it to be a fun event where we better ourselves together.”

Applications available for Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award Environmental award program highlights organizations

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois sustainability champions have been recognized every year since 1987 through the Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Awards (IGSA).

Applications are now open for the 2016 IGSA, the nation’s longest standing state environmental award program, through which companies, municipalities and organizations are acknowledged for their efforts for minimizing their environmental impact and having positive economic and societal consequences for their sustainability actions. The award program is a service of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Public and private Illinois organizations statewide are implementing strategies to save money and resources by eliminating wasted energy, water and material in their manufacturing and other activities. The Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award is an opportunity to be recognized as a leader in your sector for environmental efficiency and sustainable leadership.

Four recent winners show how they did it in an online video profiling Nestle Inc. of Jacksonville; the city of Galena; a small business Beelove of Chicago; and the city of Arcola.

Applications are available on the IGSA website at www. istc.illinois.edu/info/govs_awards.cfm. They will be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, May 20. Please visit the website, as there are many resources to assist in developing an application, such as case studies, sample applications. PRINCETON — In May, the Princeton Public Library will offer two smartphone classes to its patrons at 1:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 5, and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24. The classes will be led by representatives from Illinois Valley Cellular. Each class will cover the same agenda. Patrons are invited to bring in their phones to learn getting to know a smartphone, how to connect to WiFi, basic setup and overview, email, picture messaging, voice mail, the app store and how to download, and button configuration.

Patrons of the Princeton Public Library may now check out a Roku streaming device to use at home. Three devices will be available and can be checked out for one week only, with no renewals. Included with the device will be a remote control, an HDMI cable and the power cord.

Roku is a digital media player that connects to a television in order to stream content (TV shows, movies, videos, etc.) using an existing wireless connection.

Patrons must be 18 years old and have a valid Princeton library card to check out the device. Wi-Fi availability and a television with an HDMI port is necessary to operate the device.

The library’s Roku devices come equipped with preloaded movies and many popular channels, including A&E, All Fitness, CNET, ESPN, History Channel, National Geographic Kids, PBS, Smithsonian Channel, The Wall Street

Journal, The Food Channel and over 50 others. Borrowers are not allowed to add or remove channels.

Devices can be checked out in person or put on hold by accessing their account from the library website, www. princetonpl.org. They must be returned to the circulation desk and should not be placed in the drop box stations.

On Monday, May 9, the library will have its Monday movie from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The movie is about a simple man with a low I.Q. but good intentions.

On Tuesday, May 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., the library will offer Youth Services Story Time and Craft: Insects/ Bug Catcher.

Also on May 10, the library will have a guitar jam from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, May 11, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for Widmark Wednesday, the library will show a movie about a blackmailer who threatens to sabotage roller coasters at various American amusement parks if he isn’t paid a huge ransom.

To acknowledge April as National Volunteer Month, the Princeton Public Library would like to invite members of the Friends of the Library to stop by the circulation desk to accept a small gift of appreciation. Each class is from 4 to 5 p.m. The next class will be “Grilling and Summertime Salads” on Wednesday, June 8.

Phil S. Dixon, award winning baseball author, will be at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library on May 16 at 6 p.m. with his new presentation titled, “The Monarchs, A Baseball Revolution.” The Kansas City Monarchs baseball team were the 1924 World Champions. Dixon will also speak about Robert P. Gilkerson from Spring Valley, a famous owner of a Negro League team.

LAMOILLE — The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite.

The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and

voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The book club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, to discuss “The Paris Key” by Juliet Blackwell.

The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library.

Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Five tips on how to successfully read to your child

1. GET COMFORTABLE. Stories have been told and read for me in memorial because they are pleasurable and because sharing them draws people together. This is not necessarily obvious to children.

At home, it’s good to mix reading with warmth and affection. I try to express that in the way I sit. We tuck in on the couch or in a comfy chair. I try to snuggle with my little one, and even with my older ones, ages 13 and 11. Or we lie on the living room floor, all of us, while I read aloud.

Even if your child is behind in reading and there’s pressure to make progress, try to make reading time feel comfortable and caring.

2. READ SLOWLY. I like to stop for a couple of seconds about every half page or so when I‘m reading, especially to my youngest. The words and the story are more complex than she is used to. I want

to give her time to absorb it. Sometimes I stop and look at her and smile when we’re reading. Sometimes she doesn’t say anything to me when I smile, and that’s fine. Sometimes she smiles back. And sometimes she makes a little comment.

“Mrs. Frisby is afraid, I think,” she’ll say. I don’t have to do much to show her she’s doing well when she does that. Sometimes I’ll just nod and smile or kiss the top of her head. And then I keep reading. I read slowly too. Nice and steady to let the words sink in. There’s no rush.

3. GIVE THEM A FEW WORDS TOO. My kids loves it when I say, “And the next chapter is called ...” and they get to read the title of the chapter to me. Look for little moments when your child can help you read a more advanced book and see that it’s within his or her range someday.

Even if it’s just reading the word I or and, it helps. “See, you’re on your way!” is a powerful message.

4. EXPRESS YOURSELF (as much as you

can). The power of reading aloud for kids is in developing their ear for language, for what words sound like and how sentences work. Capturing that is key, and it’s simpler than it might sound. You don’t have to act out the roles and make it theater; you just have to capture the sound of language and the cadence of words — which ones run together, which ones get a bit of emphasis.

5. DON’T FREAK OUT. OK maybe you’re great at reading aloud. But maybe you’re not. Maybe you fear it.

Is it OK if you’re not confident in your own reading? Yes. But more important than telling you it’s OK, I want to suggest a way to make you feel more confident and therefore more likely to read to your kids: Preview the section you are going to read. The night before you read to your child, take the book to bed and read the part you’ll read the next night. If you’ve read it through beforehand, you’ll remember even if

you don’t realize it. Please know that I do this all the time, even though I am a former English teacher and principal.

I like to know where the book is going and to be ready for tough spots or content that’s challenging. It just makes me feel confident to know where things are going. If you’re nervous about reading, it will help you as well. As will starting simply. I know — I said read challenging books. But you can always build up to them. Reading to your child is a marathon not a sprint, so it’s fine if you need some me to build your own comfort and skill. Just please don’t let that fear stand between your child and what will help them most.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) seeks high school students to share their input on state education issues as part of its Student Advisory Council (SAC). Students who will start the upcoming school year as a sophomore, junior or senior in an Illinois public high school are eligible to apply for one of 12 open spots by May 27.

The SAC, which was established in 1975, represents a diverse group of students who work with the Illinois State Board and state superintendent to provide student perspectives on ISBE’s existing and proposed programs, policies and regulations. Appli-

cants undergo a competitive review process that looks for strong interpersonal skills and the ability to think creatively, work well in groups and develop innovative solutions.

Each year, SAC members select a year-long research project and present their findings and recommendations to the state board. This school year’s council focused on the importance of students’ feedback in efforts to improve teacher quality and build a more collaborative school community. On March 16, the board heard the SAC’s presentation and approved its recommendation to pursue ways to increase the level of

communication between students and teachers and school leaders.

One of the ways the SAC aims to incorporate more student voice is to expand the council’s interaction with the board during the school year. Typically, the SAC meets once a month and attends two board meetings over the course of the year. For the 2016-17 school year, the SAC aims to have three members present at each board meeting from September through March to answer board members’ questions on particular issues and provide reports on long-term questions asked of the council.

Alzheimer’s Walk moves to Ottawa OTTAWA — Jordan Block in Ottawa will be the new location for the upcoming Illinois Valley Walk To End Alzheimer’s in September. The move was announced by Jamie Messmore, development director of the Alzheimer’s Association Central Illinois Chapter Office in Peoria.

With the cooperation of the city of Ottawa, the organizers are excited about this move and partnership with the city.

“The Jordan Block park area is a lovely location for our event,” said event chair Karen Ranger. “We are excited about the added visibility this venue will bring to the walk.”

The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The mission of the Alzheimer’s Association is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through

the advance of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

The Alzheimer’s walk movement was started in 1989. Teams/individuals have been walking to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s, the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. The local Illinois Valley walk, in the past, has been held at Baker Lake in Peru. This years’ event will begin with registration at 8 a.m. at The Jordan Block with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.

CORDOVA — The annual Super Chevy Show brings together the largest collection of Chevrolet vehicles in one place as part of a multi-day, multi-location event.

BV sports physicals

MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School on Wednesday, May 18, for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Incoming fifth-grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic is not for incoming sixth-grade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete school physical.

Clinic times are as follows: seniors arrive at 5 p.m., juniors arrive at 5:15 p.m., sophomores arrive at 5:30 p.m., eighth grade arrive at 5:45 p.m., seventh grade arrives at 6 p.m. and fifth grade arrives at 6:15 p.m.

Students need to sign up and pick up a sports physical form from the school office. They must bring the completed form, including a parent’s signature and $10 the night of the clinic, or bring a parent with them. Sports

physical forms can also be found on the school website.

Eagle Run/Walk

PRINCETON — The third annual Eagle Run/Walk sponsored by Princeton Christian Academy will be Saturday, June 11.

There are different options available: 5K Run/Walk for 12 and under ($15) and 13 and older ($25), 10K Run 12 and under ($20) and 13 and older ($30) or “Run from your seat” ($25 or more donation). Race fees increase by $5 after May 31.

The race will start at 8 a.m. at Zearing Park. Registrations received after May 31 will not be guaranteed a T-shirt.
