Cinco de Mayo in Princeton The Princeton Rotary Club will host a Cinco de Mayo event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton to raise funds for a college scholarship for a deserving Princeton High School student.

Rudy’s Liquors will provide a wine, beer and spirits tasting, and Kramer’s Kitchen will be serving a nacho/taco bar, which are both included in the price of the $25 tickets.

There will also be a 50/50 and a drawing for a Philips 55-inch flat screen TV donated by the Princeton Walmart.

Tickets are available from any Princeton Rotary member, at the door or by calling Joanne Sheldon at 815719-2188.

Sweet success by LaMoille fourth-grader Olivia Sadnick opens bake shop to help fight leukemia/lymphoma

LAMOILLE — Ten-year-old Olivia Sadnick, a fourth-grade student at Allen School in LaMoille, isn’t too different than the boys and girls with whom she attends school. She’s bright. She’s a bit shy. She smiles easily.

But during a recent fundrasier at the fourth- through eighth-grade school, Olivia was able to think of a way to help other people who were less fortunate, and her efforts gained sweet success.

LaMoille teacher’s aide Linda Beattie, who helped orchestrate the event at Allen, said this was the second year the school participated in a fundraiser to raise money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Students were encouraged to bring in change throughout a variety of fun-filled themed days at the school.

Initially, Olivia was able to gather $66 in change for the effort before she decided she wanted to do more.

“I just like to bake,” said Olivia in a matter-of-fact tone. Olivia decided she’d open up a bake shop and sell her homebaked goodies, donating the money she earned to the school fundraiser.

Her first customer was her grandfather, who asked Olivia to make him some peanut butter balls. Her charge was $3, and the project blossomed from there.

A handwritten product and price list included a variety of sweet treats, including cakes, cupcakes, brownies, snowball cookies and more. With the

help of Olivia’s mom, Tori Sadnick, the price list and Olivia’s idea of her own bake shop made it to Facebook — and the rest, as they say, is sweet history.

“I started getting more and more orders,” Olivia said. “I think at one time I had about 20 orders.” All of her prices included delivery.

Olivia admitted it was a big undertaking, and oftentimes, the bake shop was hard work. But she still persevered.

“I had to because people were expecting it, and the people with leukemia need the money,” she said.

Olivia said the most popular items were cookies and brownies. Her customers included people who saw her mom’s post on Facebook as well as friends and family members.

While Tori admits “Mom and Dad lost out a little bit” on the items Olivia needed for ingredients, the end result was worth it, Tori said, adding it was a good lesson in giving for her daughter.

When Olivia closed her bake shop, she had earned $215. Adding that amount to the change she had already donated, the fourth-grader turned in just over $280 for her efforts.

Beattie said the school’s goal for the fundraiser was $800, but the students easily surpassed that benchmark. The total donated to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society was $1,003.

Beattie said the fundraiser not only helps those who are ill, but it’s a good teaching lesson for students to realize there are others who are less fortunate than themselves.

WYANET — The library now features night computer classes. These classes meet on the first and third Thursdays each month at 6 p.m.

The classes are learning about Windows 10.

There is one Windows 10 computer available with available WI-FI for personal laptops.

The library is switching up the daytime classes. The night computer classes are doing so well the staff thought perhaps a writing group or a how-to self-publish class might be interesting. Any thoughts? Please contact the library.

Join University of Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator Susan Glassman for this informative class.

In class, enjoy a recipe sample and take home some new recipes to try egg dishes at home.

The library will host a free iPhone/iPad camera course on Thursday, May 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Rodney Tennison from IV Cellular will provide a presentation to all participants with an iPhone/ iPad. Participants will learn the basics, take a picture, adjust lighting, crop a picture, zoom, focus and share pictures.

There will also be helpful tips and tricks for the use of your iPhone/ iPad camera and much, much more. A question and answer session will take place after the presentation. For questions, call the library at 815663-4741.

Every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, adult coloring is offered at the

library to help you relax and release some of the stress in your life. Coloring pictures and colored pencils are supplied by the library.

The children’s library has story time on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

During this time, children are able to read stories, given a craft to put together and are served refreshments.

WALNUT — The library is asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

LAMOILLE — Think you don’t have time to read? The library recently added 30 audio book titles for your enjoyment, so you can be doing other things while “reading” a book.

In addition, the library has many titles nominated for the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Book Award for 2018.

The library is also gearing up for summer reading and will share more details at a later date.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mark your calendars All-church banquet planned in Seatonville

Say ‘cheese’ in the Valley Spring Valley launches its first photo contest

SPRING VALLEY — Spring Valley is expanding its Outdoor and Recreation Fest this year and plans to include a photo contest to help showcase the city.

Currently, submissions are being collected. Those interested in entering the contest may do so on the city’s website at spring-valley.il.us. Submissions will be accepted until Friday, May 19.

Participants do not have to live in Spring Valley, but submissions must be of the Spring Valley area.

This contest is for all ages and ranges of expertise — from amateurs to photography enthusiasts.

Spring Valley Economic Development Director Debb Ladgenski said the committee felt the photo contest would be a natural fit for the outdoor fest because so many people take photos on their phones now, and it’s a great way to showcase the many great views of Spring Valley.

And yes, there will be prizes given to the first-, second- and third-place winners for each category in the contest. Plus, all winning photos will be displayed in the photo exhibit during the Outdoor and Recreation Fest, set for Saturday, June. 3.

Prizes and categories Category first-place winners will receive a $100 Spring Valley shopping gift card.

Second-place winners will receive a $50 gift card, and third-place winners will receive a $25 gift card.

There are four categories to enter. Participants can only enter one photo per category, therefore a maximum of four entries per person can be submitted.

There is an additional category for children under 18, however, the youth are welcome to submit photos in the other categories. The categories are as follows: Scenery: Landscapes, outdoors and nature.

Life: People, events and every day life.

Architecture: Landmarks, buildings and structures.

Wildlife: Animals and pets.

How is it judged?

Select judges will evaluate the submissions based on overall quality, creativity and how well the photograph portrays Spring Valley in relation to the category criteria.

Rules and regulations • Photos must have been taken within two years before the date of entry.

• Photographs must be suitable for a poster size reprint (8 mp camera or higher is generally acceptable); iPhone pictures that are 8 mp or greater will also be accepted. File format: TIFF or JPEG. • Photos will not be returned and may be used in city print or electronic media.

• Entries must be received by 5 p.m.

Friday, May 19.

• An individual may win no more than two categories.

• A completed and signed entry agreement must accompany each contest submission. Entry agreements by youth under 18 must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Those who have difficulties submitting photos or the agreement form on the city website may email their entries to sveconomics@comcast.net or stop by the city clerk’s office at 215 N. Greenwood St. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to submit photos using a disc or jump drive.

SEATONVILLE — The all-church banquet honoring mothers and daughters at the Seatonville Congregational Church will be held on Saturday, May 6, starting with a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Anyone interested is invited to attend the free banquet — men, women and children.

Door prizes will be potted flowers donated by the Seatonville Greenhouse.

To make reservations for the meal, call the church at 815-894-2697.

Following the meal there will be a program in the church sanctuary. Anyone who wants to attend the program but not the banquet is welcome. No reserva-

tions are needed. The program will begin around 6:30 p.m.

The speaker for the program is Sarah Dean, a young nurse who works at the Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora. She works in the ICU and went on a mission trip recently with a team from her church in Oswego. On that trip to Bolivia, Dean faced death in the aftermath of a bus accident. She will share at the program the events of that exciting day and how it has made an impact on her life. A love offering will be taken to help Dean’s work with Cup of Cold Water Ministries.

Dog tags due in Spring Valley SPRING VALLEY — Spring Valley City Clerk Becky Hansen reminds residents that city dog tags are due in the amount of $5 and payable by May 1, to avoid penalty as provided by city ordinance.

This is in addition to the rabies tag

MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School Tuesday, May 23 for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Incoming fifth grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic does not include incoming sixth grade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete school physical.

Clinic times are as follows: seniors at 5 p.m., juniors at 5:15 p.m., sophomores at 5:30 p.m., eighth-graders at 5:45 p.m., seventh-graders at 6 p.m. and fifth-graders at 6:15 p.m.

Students need to sign up and pick up a sports physical form from the school office.

They must bring the completed form, including a parent’s signature and $10 the night of the clinic, or bring a parent with them. Sports physical forms can also be found on the school website.

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Volleyball Camp will run July 10-13 with high schoolers meeting from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and junior highers from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Camp is open to any appropriate age student from any school. It is not restricted to Hall athletes only. Cost is $35, which includes shirt and instruction.

There will be open gyms for all high school Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and summer league will be Thursdays. Weightlifting is by appointment only.

OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball team will host its annual basketball camp June 26-29. Camp for fifth grades 3-5 will meet 10 a.m. to noon; sixth through eighth graders meet 1-3 p.m.
