Spring = gardens, gloves and more The sun is out; the breeze is warmer; and gardeners all over are itchin’ to start digging in their gardens.

It’s that time of year again to dust off the gardening tools, roll up the sleeves and hand select this year’s seeds.

Mary Grieff of Princeton has already kicked off her gardening season. The asparagus in her vegetable garden has sprung from the soil and is ready to be picked.

Grieff has been gardening since she was a young girl, and it’s a hobby she and her husband enjoy doing together. The Grieffs plant just about everything possible — from vegetables and fruits to flowers.

If you ask Grieff to list off what she has growing in her garden, she’ll say “it’s better to ask what we haven’t planted.”

Bedding plants, seeds, shrubs, trees and more are plentiful at area merchants.

This Week The Ottawa Art League is looking for adult amateur artists to enter the 57th annual Town and Country Art Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Jeremiah Joe Coffee, 807 LaSalle St., Ottawa.

Dark Star Comics, 524 S. Main St., Princeton, will host a Free Comic Book Day Saturday, May 2. Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores, with no purchase necessary. The store will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Team Thrive will sponsor a pancake and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 3, at the LaMoille Lions Club. The menu will include pancakes, “Nuco’s” sausage, ham, eggs (made to order), toast and beverage. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for ages 6-10 and free for children 5 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door. Carry-outs are available. A bake sale will also be held. All proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life of Bureau County.

Illinois Valley Scene

The Illinois Valley Community College Wind Ensemble will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in the Cultural Centre. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. The performance will include several selections by Leonard Bernstein and other works by Dmitri Shostakovitch, Aaron Copland and Haydn Wood.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Monday, May 4, at the Buda Community Building on Main Street, Buda.

The Princeton Moose Lodge will host a bingo night at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and sandwiches will be available for purchase. The lodge will continue to host bingo the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Princeton Library celebrates agriculture in art show

PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library is partnering with the Princeton Optimist Club for the 2015 Illinois District Optimist Poster Contest. The contest is open to all area fourth-, fifthand sixth-grade boys and girls.

Artwork must be on horizontal poster board (14 inches high x 22 inches wide) and include the contest slogan “I Alone Can Change the World by Recycling.”

Entry forms and poster board are available at the youth services desk. Art supplies are on hand for use in the youth services craft area. Finished posters with entry forms may be delivered to Princeton Public Library starting Monday, April 27. Final deadline is Monday, May 4.

TISKILWA —Wednesday, May 6, the library will host a story hour at 4 p.m. Patrons will also work on Mother’s Day-themed projects. All ages are welcome.

Also Wednesday, the library’s book club will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss the book, “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” by Diana Ackerman.

LADD —Thursday, May 14, the library will host an Illinois Rules of the Road Review Course from 10 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration is required. Call the library at 815-894-3254. The course is free.

The Ladd Public Library continues to hold preschool story times each Tuesday at 10 a.m.

A different theme is explored each week with stories, crafts and activities.

OHIO — Thursday, April 30, the library will host a workshop from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. on how to build a computer. Participants will get the opportunity to help build a computer from scratch.

PUTNAM COUNTY — The Putnam County Public Library District has expanded its homework hour program to offer homework assistance at the Magnolia, McNabb and Granville libraries. Students can have their completed homework checked, or get help understanding their homework.

Homework hour is available at the Magnolia library from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the McNabb Library on Wednesdays and from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Granville Library.

MAGNOLIA – The Magnolia branch will have a preschool story time for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years at 10 a.m. every Saturday. Stop in to enjoy a short story and related craft activity.

Stop in the Magnolia Library from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturdays for a Lego workshop. Bring imagination and create Lego models. Lego workshops will continue every Saturday through May. This program is free and open to elementary school age children and teens.

Thursday, April 30, the story of the Lincoln Assassination and John Wilkes Booth will be presented by historian Jim Gibbons at 5:30 p.m. While most Americans know the story, the details are not common knowledge.

Gibbons will shine a light on the bits of trivia that tell the whole story.

HENNEPIN – Preschool story times are at 2 p.m. Tuesdays and at 10:30 a.m. Fridays. Join the library staff for stories, crafts, games and more. This program is ideal for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years of age.

After-school activities take place from 4 to 5 p.m. most Thursdays for children in early elementary school. Come to the Hennepin branch for stories and related crafts, activities and games.

This year’s theme looked at agriculture and natural resources. “Cultivating Our Community” recognized the role agriculture plays throughout the community and world. State fair offers concert package SPRINGFIELD — Officials with the Illinois State Fair have put together a money saving deal for country music fans. This year the “Country Concert Blowout” package gives fans the opportunity to attend three shows this summer for a reduced price. The Country Concert Blowout includes a general track ticket and state fair admission for three nights of concerts.

The concerts assigned to the Country Concert Blowout include: • Sunday, Aug. 16, with Justin Moore, Josh Thompson and Jon Pardi; • Tuesday, Aug. 18, with Rascal Flatts, Scotty McCreery and Raelynn; and • Friday, Aug. 21, with Hank Williams Jr. and .38 Special.

The Country Concert Blowout package is $99

and can only be purchased through the Illinois State Fair Office located inside the Emmerson building.

The package goes on sale at 9 a.m. Monday, April 20.

Tickets can be purchased at the Emmerson building Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Only 1,000 tickets are available for the Country Concert Blowout package, and those tickets will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.

Hank Williams Jr. is the latest act to join the Illinois State Fair Grandstand lineup. The Grammy-award winning, singer/songwriter will bring his trademark blend of country, blues, and southern rock to the grandstand stage on Friday, Aug. 21. Opening for the country-legend will be rock group .38 Special.

Tickets for this individual show will range from $47

for VIP seats to $25 for Tier 3 seats.

Tickets for all named grandstand acts will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18 through Ticketmaster.

“The staff at the Illinois State Fair works very hard each year to bring in quality acts and offer reasonably priced tickets. When you look at other regional venues, our prices are consistently competitive, and this Country Concert Blowout package is a great example of that,” Ag Director Philip Nelson said.

Emerging Writers competition Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced entry forms are available for the 11th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award.

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over. Entries must be postmarked by

Starved Rock Visitors Center is now offering a Junior Rangers program for children age 5-11.

Starved Rock offers Junior Ranger program UTICA — Starved Rock is now offering a Junior Ranger program for children age 5-11. Children can obtain a Junior Ranger booklet from the Starved Rock Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This program is designed to be completed in a day trip, however, children may choose to complete the booklet over several visits or during a weekend stay at the park. The booklet is self-guided and can be completed at the child’s

own pace.

Booklets are available in two ranges age 5-7 and 8-11. Children are required to complete five activities within the booklet to achieve Starved Rock State Park Junior Ranger status. After completing two activities which are mandatory, children can then choose three other activities to complete. Information on displays and exhibits inside the Starved Rock Visitor Center can be used to answer questions. Chil-

dren are also required to head out on the trails while completing Hide and Seek, an activity which requires future Junior Rangers to learn about trees, birds and animals.

When participants return their completed booklet to the Visitor Center, the booklet will be graded. Children who have completed the program will receive a signed certificate of completion and an official Starved Rock State Park Junior Ranger badge.

PAC will present ‘Meet Mary Cassatt’ PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Center will present “Meet Mary Cassatt,” an American artist, Saturday, May 16, at the Prairie Arts Center. The brunch and program will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meet Mary Cassatt as portrayed by historical actress, Lynn Rymarz.

Learn how Mary Cassatt grew up in a wealthy family in Pennsylvania with early desires to become a professional artist. Although her father objected to her career choice, she began studying painting at the age of 15. Discover her determination as she moved to Paris where she studied the master artists of her day. Learn of the budding group of artists she became a part of and how they changed her life as an artist. See samples of her art work and follow her life’s journey as she pursued her dream in becoming the artist she always wanted to be.

Lynn Rymarz has entertained audiences with her portrayals of historical women since 2005. As a children’s author and storyteller she enjoys sharing little-known historical stories. Such stories have been published in the children’s magazines of Cricket and Highlights. Her performances told in the first person have included Mary Pickersgill, Martha Washington, Susan B. Anthony, Mary Lincoln,

How to plant your garden from scratch One way to get a head start on your garden is to start your seedlings indoors and then transplant them later into an outdoor garden. This time-tested technique can save you hundreds of dollars annually, as young plants at a nursery can be pricey. Here are some tips and tricks to make the most of this method: • Don’t start your indoor plants too soon.

They can grow in about four weeks or less if you use a high-quality garden starter. Check seed packages to learn when to plant outdoors in your area, and then start them indoors one month earlier to your transplanting date outdoors.

• Consider using a seed-starting system that takes some of the gardening guesswork out of the equation. For example, the Aerogarden Seed Starting system allows you to start up to 66 seedlings indoors with no dirt or mess, nurturing seeds

with optimal amounts of water and nutrients for reliable germination and healthy growth.

• Add new nutrients to the seedlings every two weeks and keep the water at full level. Feeding your plants more than the recommended amount will not make them grow faster. In fact, it could hurt the plants.

• Before transplanting, seedlings need to be hardened off. Skipping this step will almost certainly result in some or all of your plants dying.

Hardening off seedlings eases their transition to the outdoors, where they will be exposed to the elements. The process involves gradually exposing plants to the outdoors, protecting them from full sunlight, temperature variations and wind.

• Don’t let sprouts get too big before transplanting them outdoors. Ideally they should be about 4-6 inches tall. If possible,

wait to plant your seedlings on a cool, cloudy day. If your seedlings get too large before weather will allow transplanting outdoors, transplant them into small pots with high quality potting soil.

Keep fully watered in a sunny space until weather permits transplanting outdoors.

• After transplanting seedlings outdoors, be sure to water them daily for the first two weeks, especially if the weather is dry and sunny.

• Save and reuse your seed starter tray for the next season. Once the spring plants have been transplanted outdoors, you will be free to get a head start on your summer crop.

Annual Convoy Against Cancer is May 2 LADD — The 2015 Convoy Against Cancer BIG Truck Show returns to Route 89/Main Street in Ladd. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2.

A convoy is defined as a group of vehicles traveling together for mutual support and protection — make sure everyone makes it through.

“This convoy supports each other in a special way with a cure for cancer at the end of the route.

The vehicles stay put, but the message still works,” said Phil Hocking, event organizer. The show is intended to offer vehicle owners and enthusiasts something different while benefiting a good cause — the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

With the help of the village of Ladd and Mayor Mike Grivetti, Route 89 will be rerouted so the vehicles will be displayed on Ladd’s Main Street, Ladd. There will be plenty of room to line the street with all makes and models of new and restored, BIG trucks. Truck cranes, fire trucks, wreckers, pick-ups and redi-mix trucks from Peoria, Bloomington,

Dixon, Princeton, Peru and all over the North Central Illinois area will be part of the show.

A new addition to the line-up will be farm tractors — new and antique.

All are welcome.

“Last year one of our farmers brought a collection of antique Farmall International tractors, and the people really enjoyed them. We’ll be looking for some John Deere and Massey Fergusons to round out the display,” Hocking said.

“There will be all makes and models of antique and new big trucks as well as pick-up trucks, too.”

All entrants will receive a dash plaque donated

by Graphic Electronics of Spring Valley. The truck registration fee is a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Local businesses have donated door prizes and silent auction items ranging from toys to trucking essentials.

Cooking for someone with diabetes can be difficult, since you have to balance the carbohydrates and fat. Here are a few recipes that might help you come up with something new to try.

Meat Loaf Rounds with Skillet Rice 12 ounces extra lean ground beef 4 ounces turkey sausage or 50% less fat pork bulk sausage 2/3 cup picante sauce, divided 2 large egg whites 1/2 cup quick oats 2 tablespoons ketchup 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 3/4 cup instant brown rice 1/3 cup water Mix together beef, sausage, 1/3 cup picante sauce, egg whites and oats in medium bowl. Shape into 4 patties, 1/2-inch-thick. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Coat skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Add patties.

Cook 5 minutes. Meanwhile, mix together 2 tablespoons picante sauce, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce in small bowl. Turn patties. Spoon 1 tablespoon picante mixture on each patty. Reduce heat to medium low. Cover and cook 15 minutes or until no longer pink in centers. Cook, rice according to package directions, omitting any salt or fat. Remove from heat. Set aside. Remove patties to plate. Add water, remaining picante sauce and rice to skillet. Stir, scraping bottom and sides of skillet. Place patties on rice mixture. Simmer 3 minutes. Makes 4 servings (1 patty and 3/4 cup rice mixture per serving). 373

MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School on Wednesday, May 27 for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Incoming fifth-grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic.

Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic is NOT for incoming sixth grade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete school physical.

Clinic times are as follows: Seniors arrive at 5 p.m.; juniors arrive at 5:15 p.m.; sophomores arrive at 5:30 p.m.; eighth-grade students arrive at 5:45 p.m.; seventh grade students arrive at 6 p.m.; and fifth-grade students arrives at 6:15 p.m.

Lady Lions Camp

LAMOILLE — The LaMoille/Ohio “Hoop it Up with the Lions” Basketball Camp will be June 8-11, at LaMoille High School for all area students.

The camp is open for all incoming kindergarten through second-grade students from 9 to 10 a.m. for $20. Students will shoot on smaller hoops to learn the proper form, and basic basketball skills.

Incoming third-fifth grade students will meet

The camp will be taught by members of the Lady Lions coaching staff, current and former players along with special camp instructors. If registration numbers are down, sessions may be combined.

Players should bring water, proper practice attire and court shoes.

Participation awards will be awarded as will contest awards featuring 3on 3, Hot Spots and Free Throws.

NFL Style Combine

GENESEO — Former Super Bowl champion and Green Bay Packer Don Beebe will be hosting an NFL Style Combine May 9 at Geneseo High School.

The combine will be open to high school football players ages 16-18.

Morris Gus Macker

MORRIS — The Morris Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be June 6-7. The tournament is open to boys and girls in age brackets from 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18. Adult divisions are open to men and women in age brackets that range up to 40, 50, 60 and over, with all levels of experience encouraged and welcome to play.

Every player in the Macker tournament is guaranteed at least three games. All registered players also receive a T-shirt for participating in the

KurtFest 2015

PRINCETON — The second annual KurtFest Soccer Tournament will be Saturday, June 27 at Zearing Park. The tournament is held in memory of Kurt Garvin, who passed away in 2014, sponsored

by the Princeton Soccer Academy and Princeton Jaycees.

There are tournaments for 3 v 3, 7 v 7 and 11 v 11. There is a discounted rate for team registrations through May 20.

Jay Braida Golf PRINCETON — The sixth annual Jay Braida Memorial Golf Open will be held July 11 at Chapel Hill Golf Course in Princeton.

This year’s recipient is Kamden Wahlgren of Princeton. His parents are Erick and Staci. He has two other siblings, Kaiden, 10 and Emma, 5. Kamden

is in second grade and was diagnosed with Pediatric Auto-Immune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep in 2012.

He was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and Toxic Encephalitis.
