National Take Back Day On Saturday, April 30, CPASA (Community Partners Against Substance Abuse Coalition), Princeton Police Department, Buda Police Department, Granville Police Department, Tiskilwa Police Department, Walnut Police Department, Wyanet Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Medications will be accepted for disposal at the following locations: • Princeton Police Department, 605 Elm Place, Princeton, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Granville Police Department/Village Hall, 316 S McCoy St, Granville, from 10 a.m. to noon.

• Buda Police Department/Village Hall, 105 W Main St, Buda, from 9 a.m. to noon.

• Tiskilwa Fire Department, 135 N High St, Tiskilwa, from 9 a.m. to noon.

• Walnut Police Department/Village Hall, 114 Jackson St, Walnut, from 9 a.m. to noon.

• Wyanet Police Department/Village Hall, 101 S Maple St, Wyanet, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.

This past September, Americans turned in 350 tons of unused, expired or unwanted drugs at more than 3,800 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. This was the 10th National Take Back Day event since September 2010; cumulatively, these events have collected 5,525,021 pounds of drugs. Locally, CPASA and its law enforcement partners have collected more than 9,000 pounds (4.5 tons) during this period.

Dimmick students rise to the challenge of the annual 5K race

DIMMICK — Addie Sherman of Cherry had two things on her mind Tuesday, April 12, as she prepared to take her place at the starting line of the Dimmick Dash 5K — beating her time from last year and receiving her post-race free banana.

Sherman, a first-grade student at Dimmick Grade School, couldn’t remember what her time was last year when she competed in the race as a kindergartner, but she was intent on beating it nevertheless with a combination of walking and running.

“I want to beat my score from last time,” she said.

When asked what her favorite part of the race was last year, she said, “You get a banana and water when you are done.”

Sherman said she felt proud of herself for finishing the 3.1 miles last year, even though it was tough at times.

“I like how I feel when I’m getting exercise,” she said.

Sherman wasn’t the only one getting exercise that day. Physical education teacher Joel Foster said the Dimmick Dash — a school-wide effort that also involves the community — has grown in popularity throughout the years.

“This will be the fifth annual Dimmick Dash. The first year we had about 100 runners, and we expect almost 300 this year,” he said.

All students, kindergarten through eighth, can run the race. It is a requirement for fifth through eighth grades, and optional for kindergarten through fourth grades. Foster said nearly all the students participate, and the handful that don’t are allowed to play on the playground while their classmates are running.

By the time the race starts, a great deal of work has already gone into the event.

“I guess you could say I’m the race director,” Foster said. “I do a lot of the work on race day, but I have a ton of help leading up to the race. Administrative assistants Carol Wineinger and Jen Krolak do a tremendous amount of work helping me organize the race, and it would not be possible without their assistance.”

The children also put in plenty of hard work getting into shape for the race.

“We have fitness days throughout the whole school year to improve strength and endurance, but we really start to focus on

training for the Dimmick Dash toward the end of February. We start with very short running intervals and slowly work our way up,” Foster said.

Not every child is enthusiastic about running 3.1 miles, and that’s something Foster expects and understands.

“Some of the kids groan about training for the Dimmick Dash, but they do a pretty good job with it. Some of them are much more motivated than others,” he said. “Now that we have been doing it for five years, I really try to get the students to focus on self-improvement. I encourage the students to try to improve upon their previous times and not to worry about anybody else. I find that this is more motivating to students than worrying about where they place compared to others.”

Children seem to also get a kick out of finishing ahead of their teachers, some of whom do the race with their students.

Kindergartners Vivianna Raccuglia and Raigan Jernigan finished ahead of their teacher Kate Ringness, who was proud of her students’ accomplishment.

“I knew some of them would beat me,” Ringness said.

Every child who participated received a ribbon, a T-shirt and words of encouragement from Foster, who stood at the finish line set up by Starved Rock Runners and congratulated the children as they crossed.

“The actual day of the race is the most rewarding for me. It is so fun to see the kids putting forth their best efforts and cheering for one another. Also, it is pretty awesome to see the parents, teachers and community members participating and cheering for all of the runners,” he said.

The top three runners in four categories based on grade and gender received an additional award at a ceremony following the race.

“My goal is for the students to have a positive experience with physical activity in hopes of making them lifelong movers. I constantly remind the kids that I don’t care if they get first or last as long as they get exercise and do their best. Learning this at a young age will hopefully help them develop healthy habits as adults,” Foster said. “I realize that not everybody loves running as much as I do, and that’s OK. If they can work hard and improve as runners, my hope is that they will be willing to work hard to be successful at what they are passionate about.”

PERU — St. Bede Academy’s auction on April 30 is sold out. However, you can still register to mobile bid and take part in the Academy’s largest fundraiser.

Last Saturday, St. Bede opened up its mobile bidding, which offers anyone the opportunity to bid on more than 125 silent auction items right from their phone or tablet.

“Our auction will reach out far beyond our campus.” stated Bonnie Prokup, who spearheads the auction each year.“Those who would love to be here but can’t, can still take part in the fun and support St. Bede. Mobile bidding allows guests at the auction to have more time to enjoy the event, as well as to socialize and mingle without the hassle of checking bid sheets to see if they’ve been outbid,” stated Prokup.

In addition to the return of mobile bidding, St. Bede’s “Fund-A-Need” will have donors raising their paddles again to continue the Academy’s focus on technology. Last year more than $67,000 was raised to provide Google Chromebooks for every St. Bede student.

This year, technology switches to the classroom as St. Bede adds a new curriculum and classes for the 2016-17 school year with the implementation of Project Lead the Way (PLTW), www.pltw.

org.

Principal Michelle Mershon said, “PLTW will empower our students to be technology trailblazers. With the world surrounded by computer science, PLTW Computer Science will engage students in real-world activities with skills they will use at St. Bede, and for the rest of their lives.

PLTW will set St. Bede apart and will keep our faculty and students on the cutting edge. We are the only high school in the area with this curriculum. The closest high schools offering the PLTW Computer Science curriculum are in Peoria or the Chicago suburbs.”

“Last year the St. Bede Auction was our most successful auction in 32 years,” stated Development Director Julia Yaklich. “Over a million dollars has been raised in the past six years through Bonnie Prokup’s outstanding efforts in managing the auction.”

Besides the introduction of Shelly St. John, St. Bede’s new auctioneer, a number of new winning opportunities will be added to the auction.

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau has announced the newly-formed AgVocate Award.

This award provides an opportunity for Bureau County Farm Bureau to recognize families and/or individuals who have made an impact on Bureau County agriculture through leadership and service.

To qualify, a nominee should be a Farm Bureau member who has demonstrated leadership and service within the community. Nominees must have provided service to agriculture but may come from disciplines that serve other areas in addition to agriculture, such as education, research,

public relations, agribusiness, public affairs and other areas. Such individuals should also have a history of giving time and/or resources to promote the aims, programs and services of Bureau County agricultural organizations.

If you would like to nominate a person you feel fits the service award criteria, contact the Farm Bureau office in order to pick up a nomination form. Nominations will be accepted from anyone interested in recognizing someone for their efforts.

     PRINCETON — On Thursday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m., three bell ringing groups will perform a variety of music at the Princeton Public Library. Tunes will include patriotic, classical, religious and folk themes and will be performed by the following groups from the First United Methodist Church: • Bells 101 is a group that has been together for about two years and meets for practice weekly. This group is open to anyone who wants to learn to play bells.

• Kid Bells is for third through fifth graders who have been meeting twice monthly since last fall.

• The sextet from the Elm City Bells is a group from the established Elm City Bell Choir which meets weekly.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, a movie will be shown about a police officer who joins a secret organization that polices and monitors extraterrestrial interactions on planet Earth.

SPRING VALLEY — Phil S. Dixon, award winning baseball author, will be at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library on May 16 at 6 p.m. with his new presentation titled, “The Monarchs, A Baseball Revolution.”

The Kansas City Monarchs baseball team were the 1924 World Champions. Dixon will also speak about Robert P. Gilkerson from Spring Valley, a famous owner of a Negro League team.

The University of Illinois Extension will do a Wellness Wednesday Series which is a

free program to participants.

Each class will have a recipe available to sample.

Summertime Crock Pot Cooking; Maximize your Slow Cooker will be offered Wednesday, May 4, at 4-5 p.m. This class will show how to maximize a slow-cooker by saving time and creating healthy meals with little effort. Freezer Overload; Cooking for 1 or 2 will be offered June 8. Techniques to cook on a smaller scale and keep mealtime exciting will be discussed. Farmers Market Fresh; Cooking with Fresh Vegetables is July 13 at 4-5 p.m. Experimenting with vegetables is a nutritionally rewarding and tasty experience. LAMOILLE — The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class.

Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The book club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, to discuss “The Paris Key” by Juliet Blackwell.

The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

Walnut has a number of new books that were added in April.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Little libraries in the big library Princeton Public Library recently hosted a reception to celebrate the unveiling of the Little Free Libraries that will soon be appearing throughout the city. Each one was uniquely decorated, and an auction was held for those available for purchase.

Registration open for NIU Community School summer music lessons Rachel Barton Pine to teach Chamber music workshop masterclass

DEKALB — Enjoy the arts and discover something new this summer!

The NIU Community School of the Arts offers a variety of programs for children and adults. Music classes, ensembles, private lessons, chamber music workshops and a percussion camp begin in June on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Summer Chamber Music Workshops — June 27-30 Advanced String Quartet Workshop, Ages 12-19 String players improve their musicianship and ensemble skills as they rehearse and are coached as a member of two string quartets. Each student will perform in a quartet at the masterclass taught by international concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

The workshop begins with a sight-reading party on June 21 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Workshop activities during the week also include seminars on music theory, history and rehearsal techniques. All quartets will perform in the final day recital in Boutell Concert Hall.

Junior Chamber Music Workshop, Ages 8-15 Young string and woodwind players have fun learning and rehearsing duets, rounds or quartets, based on their level and experience. Students refine reading skills, learn more about playing music with others, and gain listening and leadership skills. The workshop begins with a sight-reading party on June 21 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. There is a final day recital at 11 a.m. in Boutell Concert Hall.

Violin teacher and chamber musician Laurie Rodriguez is the director of the workshops. She has been a private teacher with the NIU Community School for many years and has directed multiple chamber music workshops in Illinois, Utah and Minnesota.

Students are admitted to these workshops by audition on May 9 starting at 4 p.m. To reserve an audition time, submit a registration form with the $15 non-refundable registration fee by April 29.

Summer Percussion Day Camp Join Community School percussion teacher Alexis Lamb for this week-long percussion program at NIU. This camp includes daily classes, workshops and instruction in the many forms of percussion including mallet pieces, found instruments, world instruments and group compositions, as well as a chance to perform in the

concert at the end of the week! Camp dates are June 20-24, beginning players from 9 to 11 a.m. and intermediate players from 1 to 3 p.m.

Private Music Lessons Private lessons are available on many musical instruments, including violin, piano and guitar, as well as banjo, mandolin, flute, saxophone, and more. CSA teachers include NIU students and faculty, as well as experienced community-based musicians. Students and teachers meet weekly June 13-July 31, at a time convenient to both. Community members of all ages and skill levels are invited to brush up skills or try a new instrument!

Music Classes for Young Children Prelude Class (ages 1-3) is a group class with lots of fun for kids and parents! Class activities include music listening, creative movement, songs and lap games.

Development Class (ages 3-5) builds on the material learned in Prelude Class, adding musical patterns and skills through games, songs, creative movement, percussion instruments, basic music theory and learning about some of the instruments of the orchestra. A parent must accompany the child to each class.

Both classes meet on six Saturdays beginning June 25 (no class on July 2). Prelude begins at 10 a.m. and Development begins at 10:35 a.m.

Traditional and Suzuki violin instructor, music educator and Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra member Laurie Rodriguez teaches both classes.

Music Classes for Kids and Adults Guitar for Kids provides children age 8-12 with an introduction to guitar playing through a fun, song-oriented approach to learning.

Guitar Basics is a beginning class for age 13-adult, where students learn to read music, play songs and construct and play scales and chords, in addition to learning about music theory and exploring various styles of guitar techniques.

In Intermediate Guitar, students develop different styles of playing, continue to learn music theory, and build more advanced playing techniques.

These classes meet for six Wednesdays beginning June 15 (no class meeting July 6); see the website for class meeting times. Associate level instructor Quentin Dover is an accomplished guitar teacher, with many years of experience working with students of all ages, both privately and in a group setting.

Adult Piano is a begin-

ning group piano class for ages 13-adult. Bring the joy of piano music to your life and enjoy getting to know fellow musicians in this beginning class. Learn simple tunes and basic skills such as reading music and chords. Every student plays on a keyboard in a piano classroom. Adult Piano class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays June 14 through June 30 from 6:15 to 6:55 p.m. Associate level piano and harp instructor Jaina Krueger instructs.

Qi Gong (or Chi-Kung) is a precursor of Tai Chi. For ages 12-adult; this class will focus on 24 postures divided into three sets. These exercises can be done at one time during a day or interspersed amid practice sessions, rehearsals, etc. to renew energy, release tension, and enable greater relaxation and concentration when practiced immediately before a performance. Taught by Eric Schroeder, this class meets for six Mondays starting June 13 (no class on July 4).

Ensembles NIUkulele Ensemble is a fun group designed for beginning and intermediate ukulele players ages 9-adult. Students learn to play melodies, chords and songs in many styles, and to perform solo, in unison and in harmony. Beginners receive instruction on the ukulele, and players with more experience are assigned more challenging parts. Associate level guitar teacher Eric Schroeder directs the group, bringing his many years of experience teaching private and group lessons to the ensemble. Group rehearsals begin June 13 for six Mondays from 7 to 7:55 p.m. (no rehearsal on July 4) with a concert in the Recital Hall on the final night.

CSA Guitar Ensemble provides an opportunity for guitarists to play together in an ensemble setting while gaining confidence and skill on the instrument. Designed for beginning and intermediate players age 14-adult, the group meets for six Wednesdays beginning June 15 from 8 to 8:55 p.m. (no rehearsal on July 6). On the final night a recital is scheduled at 8 p.m. Associate level instructor Quentin Dover is the ensemble director.

The NIU Community School of the Arts offers year-round programming in music and the arts. Out and about Christian musician featured at upcoming women’s gathering OGLESBY — On Saturday, April 30, a local C h ri s t i an wo m en’ s group, Women at our BEST, will host Judy Dagraedt as both guest speaker and musician.

BEST, which stands for building, encouraging, strengthening and teaching, is a women’s outreach ministry of Oglesby Union Church. The group invites all women to its quarterly, non-denominational events.

The April gathering will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Oglesby Union Church. Dagraedt of Ottawa will present her music as well as speak on finding peace.

A light sandwich and salad lunch will be provided during the event.

There is never a fee and no membership requirements. Free child care is also available upon request.

Wife, mother and musician, Dagraedt, has been singing, writing music and playing various instruments for many years. She hosted

a musical TV program titled, “Gentle Moments” and now hosts a radio program. She has recorded 10 albums and has traveled the country as well as Israel performing for various groups and organizations including singing the national anthem for the Chicago White Sox. She and her husband were recently featured on the “700 Club.” The focus of her message will be on having peace in the midst of turmoil.

‘Convoy Against Cancer’ big truck show

LADD — The 2016 “Convoy Against Cancer” big truck show powers back to Route 89/Main Street in Ladd on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show is intended to offer vehicle owners and enthusiasts something different while benefiting a good cause — the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

With the help of the village of Ladd, Route 89 will be re-routed for a few hours, so that the vehicles will be displayed on Main Street in Ladd. There will be plenty of room to line the street with all makes and models of new and restored, big trucks including truck cranes, fire trucks, wreckers and pick-ups, from all over the North Central Illinois area.

Farm tractors — new and antique — are again welcome this year according to the show’s organizer, Phil Hocking.

“We have a couple local farmers with fine collections of antique Farmall International tractors, and the people really enjoyed them,” he said. “There will be all makes and models of antique and new big trucks as well as pickup trucks, too.”

All entrants will receive a dash plaque donated by Graphic Electronics of Spring Valley. The truck registration fee is a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Local businesses have donated door prizes and silent auction items ranging from toys to trucking essentials.

Live comedy coming to Rock Falls ROCK FALLS — On Friday, May 6, professional comedians Mike Brody, Angelo Vescio and Ben Katzner will headline “Raise the Woof,” a comedy show fundraiser for Happy Tails Humane Society. The show will be at 6 p.m. at the Days Inn, 2105 First Ave. in Rock Falls.

passes for an exclusive professional magic show before the comedy show.

Desserts, cocktails, and other items will be auctioned.

My high school track coaches, coach Donner, coach Guier, and coach DeVenney have all influenced my athletic career in different ways. They have shown me that there is always room for improvement, but having fun and believing in yourself are the most important things. But the person with the greatest influence on my athletic career is my brother, Ben. He has always been an amazing athlete and I have always wanted to be as talented as he is. I grew up watching him playing basketball and running track and I couldn’t wait until I could do those things too. He is one of the biggest role models in my life.

Person with the greatest influence in my life (and why): My mom. She has encouraged me to always go out and be the best person I can be. She has given me so many amazing opportunities in my life and I definitely would not be where I am today without her.

Rumble for the kids

PRINCETON — This year’s Rumble For The Kids will be Saturday, April 30, at Logan Junior High School’s Pannebaker Gymnasium. Doors will open at 4 p.m. with a 5 p.m. bell time.

Rumble For The Kids is an annual wrestling event that helps raise money for non-profit organizations that assist in helping local kids.

Lady Lions Basketball Camp

LAMOILLE — There will be three basketball camps offered through the LaMoille/Ohio Lady Lions program this summer at LaMoille High School.

A father and child clinic will be June 4, open to all boys and girls entering grades 1-8 with their father. Cost is $25 and $5 for each additional child.

A girls’ day camp will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 27-30. Cost

is $40 per camper. Gym will open at 4 p.m. for early-bird shooting.

A girls’ team camp open to all high school players will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 6-16. Cost is $60 per camper. Gym will open at 4 p.m. for early-bird shooting.

LAMOILLE — The LaMoille/ Ohio Volleyball Camp will run June 6-9 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. for Grades 5-8 and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Grades 9-12.

3-on-3 basketball

LAMOILLE —LaMoille High School will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in conjunction with Buffalo Days Saturday, June 11.

There will be divisions for boys and girls in grades 1-5, 6-8 and 9-12 and men and women’s 18 and older. Games will start at 9 a.m. Cost is $30 per team. Registration forms are available at LHS.

L/O Trivia Night LAMOILLE — The LaMoille and Ohio Athletic Boosters are teaming up for a Trivia Night Saturday, April 30 at the LaMoille Lions Club. Tickets for Cardinals-Cubs games at Wrigley, including a late-season showdown on Sept. 25, will be one of the many items on silent auction.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with trivia beginning at 7 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per team with 6-10 players per teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Southern Senior Golf

WALNUT — The Southern Senior Golf meets once a week at area golf courses around north central Illinois. It is held on Mondays through Oct. 3 with a couple Tuesdays mixed in for holidays. Start time is 8 a.m.

Costs is $25 for 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, and prizes. There may be up to 100 players every week, so golfers need to call the club ahead of time to reserve a cart.

Stops on the tour include Mendota, Kewanee, Amboy, LaSalle, Dixon and Prophetstown.

Thank Dank 5K

MENDOTA — This year’s Thank Dank 5K race will be Sunday, May 1 at Lake Kakuska in Mendota. Registration and check-in will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. with the race to start at 10 a.m.

Registration must be received

by Friday, April 15 to receive a T-shirt. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the race. Preregistered participants by April 24 may pick up their race day materials between 1 and 3 p.m.

L-P volleyball tournament

LASALLE — The second annual LEAD 6-on-6 volleyball fund-

raiser will be Saturday, April 30 in Sellett Gym at LaSalle-Peru Township High School. The tournament hosted by LP’s LEAD (Leadership, Education, Awareness of Disabilities) team will raise money to support the Starved Rock Area 16 Special Olympics.

Eagle Run/Walk PRINCETON — The third annual Eagle Run/Walk sponsored by Princeton Christian Academy will be Saturday, June 11.

There are different options available: 5K Run/Walk for 12 and under ($15 and 13 and older ($25), 10K Run 12 and under ($20) and 13 and older ($30) or “Run from your seat” ($25 or more donation). Race fees increase by $5 after May 31.

The race will start at 8 a.m. at Zearing Park. Registrations received after May 31 will not be guaranteed a T-shirt.
