St. Bede Auction to highlight the 125th commencement PERU — As the 125th commencement of St. Bede quickly approaches, this historical milestone will bring hundreds to celebrate it at the St. Bede auction on Saturday, April 29. Last year the sold out auction broke an all-time record on a number of levels. This year, they look to break even more.

Mobile bidding will return for the third year and allows anyone to bid on silent and super silent items right from their phone and tablet. Do you reside out of the area or out of state? Then register to mobile bid and you can “virtually” be there and take part and support the Academy’s largest fundraiser.

“Mobile bidding has been a success because our guests have more time to enjoy the event and socialize plus those that are unable to attend can take part in the evening as well,” stated Bonnie Prokup, who oversees the auction each year. “The technology of mobile bidding makes it fun, convenient and simplifies check in and check out. And what’s really exciting is we can share with our guests immediately an exact total of what was raised when the silent and super silent auction closes,” Prokup added.

In addition to the return of mobile bidding, will be the return of the St. Bede Signature Item.

“Attendees at this year’s auction will have the chance to purchase an item which beautifully symbolizes our 125 year history,” said Abbot Philip Davey, O.S.B., ’65.

“This one-of-a-kind exclusive item designed and created only for the auction will touch the hearts of generations as it ties our past to the present in beauty, faith and tradition,” stated development director Julia Yaklich.

A special part of the evening will include students from the Class of 2017, the 125th class to graduate from St. Bede, to bid a special thanks and farewell to honor all the 124 graduating classes before them.

“We are excited to do something that has never been done before,” said senior Jaci Cain. “But you’ll have to come to the auction to find out what it’s all about.”

“We are excited to announce that John Spencer, vice president of operations at LaSalle County Broadcasting, will host and emcee the auction and team up with wellknown charity auctioneer Greg Dellinger,”

Yaklich said. “Greg is passionate about Catholic education, filled with high energy and humor, and we are thrilled to have him as our auctioneer this year.”

WYANET — The Wyanet Library’s Book Group meets on the fourth Thursday. The April book is “The Marriage of Opposites” by

Alice Hoffman. This book, a forbidden love story, is set on a tropical island about the woman who gave birth to Camille Pissarro, also known as the “father of impressionism.”

There are copies of the book available to read. The group meets Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m.

The library now features night computer classes.

These classes meet on the first and third Thursdays each month at 6 p.m. The classes are learning about Windows 10. There is one Windows 10 computer available with available WI-FI for personal laptops.

The library is switching up the daytime classes.

The night computer classes are doing so well the staff thought perhaps a writing group or a how-to self-publish class might be interesting. Any thoughts?

13th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition announced Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced entry forms are available for the 13th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award.

“We created the Illinois Emerging Writers Competition to promote creative writing and provide an outlet for talented writers,” White said. “Great poems have the ability to enrich and enhance our lives, and I am looking forward to celebrating talented poets with this year’s competition.”

The competition is named in honor of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks and is co-sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book and Kevin Stein, who succeeded Brooks as Illinois

Poet Laureate.

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over. Entries must be postmarked by June 30.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($500), second ($300) and third place ($100). Winning poems will be submitted for possible publication in the “Ninth Letter,” “RHINO” and “Quiddity” journals and “Poetic License Press” publications. Winners will read their poems at a ceremony later this year at the Illinois State Library in Springfield.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Illinois Valley Community College announces winners of Richard Publow Memorial Awards in Writing OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College recently named recipients of the Richard Publow Memorial Awards in Writing at the annual student academic awards banquet.

The award is open to students enrolled in Basic Composition II and English Composition I and II during the spring, summer or fall semester.

Hello, my name is Henrietta Nickelsen and I had a recent stay at Colonial Health Care and Rehabilitation Centre after I encountered the inability to stand on my right leg.

My leg was very weak. As a result of choosing Colonial I found a welcome by administration and the therapy department. The employees were friendly and helpful. I was using the therapy department mostly and the care and help I received was excellent, the staff of the department were very helpful and well trained. The therapy was an excellent service and wonderful help. I specifically liked the cleanliness of the building!!! I am grateful for the help they have given me to live a normal life. I feel very grateful! I would recommend Colonial to anyone needing this service.

Extension will offer free pressure canner dial gauge testing clinics Enjoy the freshness of produce all year long when you preserve your food. One popular method of food preservation is pressure canning. Test your pressure canner dial gauge annually to ensure a safe food preservation season.

The University of Illinois Extension will offer free pressure canner dial gauge testing walk-in clinics from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Ottawa, Henry and Princeton.

Clinics will be Friday, April 28, at the LaSalle County office, 1689 North 31st Road in Ottawa; Friday, May 5, at the Marshall-Putnam office, 509 Front St. in Henry; and the Princeton clinic will be Friday, May 12, at the Bureau County office, 850 Thompson St. in Princeton.

Participants should bring their pressure canner lid with the dial gauge attached for testing. Remember, weighted pressure canners do not need to be tested.

In addition, attend a class and food demonstration, Preserving Your Food, Canning, Freezing and Drying Seasonal Foods, offered at each clinic from 10 to 11 a.m. Susan Glassman, nutrition and wellness educator, will discuss the advantages of food preservation, different food preservation methods, and current, researchbased food safety and handling procedures for successful food preservation.

Whether you are a beginner or expert, you will gain knowledge about preserving delicious fruits and vegetables for culinary enjoyment throughout the year.

Participants can also enjoy a sample of homemade strawberry jam and take home recipes. To register for the class, call the University of Illinois Extension at 815224-0889.

Summer Agricultural Institute for educators planned Elliott Butler

IVSO will present spring concert LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert of the 30th anniversary concert will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in Matthiessen Auditorium at LaSalle-Peru High School.

The concert will feature the music of Grieg, Handel, Berlioz and more. The soloist will be Elliott Butler, cello, the IVYSO Concerto Competition winner.

Butler is a home-schooled senior taking dual enrollment classes at Illinois Valley Community College. He has played in the Illinois Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra since the fall of 2013 and has been their principal cellist since 2014. He was recognized by the IVYSO as “Outstanding New Student” in the 2013-14 season and “Most Improved Player” in the 2014-15 season. In the 2015-16 season his IVYSO peers selected him for the Blouke Carus Award for Outstanding Leadership and Musicianship.

He was recognized in the Shine Talent Search as a runner-up and an honoree in 2015 and 2016, respectively. In addition to playing the cello, he enjoys playing the piano, and composing and arranging music. He was selected as a finalist in the 2016 National Young Composer’s Challenge for his original composition for orchestra, “Journey to Mars.” Next year he will be studying music composition with an emphasis in cello performance at Western Illinois University.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and 5 for students/seniors. A reception will follow the concert.

PRINCETON — Applications are now available for this year’s Summer Agricultural Institute, targeted to preschool to high school educators who want to expand their curriculum to include topics related to agriculture — the world’s food and fiber system. The program is offered at several locations around the state including Bureau County. This year’s dates for the session offered in Bureau County are June 12-16.

Summer Ag Institute focuses on integrating resources and hands-on activities about agriculture and the environment into existing classroom curriculum. Graduate Credit/Professional Development Hours can be earned upon successful completion of the course.

Participants can expect in-class instruction about agriculture and the entire food and fiber system, consumer issues relating to agriculture, teaching innovations and resources available to them; field trips to farms or other production enterprises and/or agribusinesses; lab activities relating to science and agriculture

in the classroom; free teaching materials and more.

The cost for the class is $100, and enrollment is limited to 30 teachers. If a teacher is a Farm Bureau member or signs up as a member, the class cost is $80. Applications are available at the Bureau County Farm Bureau at 815-875-6468. Completed applications are due May 1.

LaMoille Ambulance will host EMT Basic Class LAMOILLE — LaMoille Ambulance will host an EMT Basic Class through OSF St. Anthony’s in Rockford.

This 136-hour EMT-Basic course will begin on June 3 and will be taught by Terry Pratt, EMT-Paramedic, OSF educator.

Classes will continue until Oct. 3 on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings with the state exam to follow.

Classes will be held in LaMoille.

Members of OSF Northern Illinois EMS will be charged $625. Non-members of OSF Northern Illinois EMS or individuals taking the course will be required to pay a registration fee of $725. Registration must be received by May 10, so books can be ordered in time for the class.

All candidates must hold a high school diploma or have a high school equivalency certificate and be 18 years of age or older. A copy of the diploma, GED certificate or proof of graduation from high school must accompany the registration form. Payment by check, money order or credit card is due at the time of registration unless other arrangements are made through OSF St. Anthony’s.

Spring flushing schedule announced in Spring Valley SPRING VALLEY — The city of Spring Valley will commence flushing water mains Sunday, May 14. Flushing will continue through Friday, May 26, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

During his time, residents should expect some increased turbidity and isolated areas of low pressure.

If any discoloration occurs in drinking water, residents are asked to let the faucets run until the water clears.

The schedule for the flushing is as follows: May 14-15 — all areas west of Hall High School, including Marquette Road, Briarcliff, Johnson Subdivision and Industrial Park.

May 16-18 — area north of Dakota Street, including Cambridge and Spring Creek subdivisions.

May 21-23 — area west of Spalding Street and south of Dakota Street, and east of John Mitchell Avenue.

BV sports physicals MANLIUS — A sports physical clinic will be held at Bureau Valley High School Tuesday, May 23 for all Bureau Valley incoming seventh, eighth, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Incoming fifth-grade boys participating in JFL may also attend this clinic. Area doctors are providing the community service for any Bureau Valley student who needs the required sports physical. This clinic does not include incoming sixth-grade students or incoming freshman students as they need a complete school physical.

Clinic times are as follows: seniors at 5 p.m., juniors at 5:15 p.m., sophomores at 5:30 p.m., eighth-graders at 5:45 p.m., seventh-graders at 6 p.m. and fifth-graders at 6:15 p.m.

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Volleyball Camp will run July 10-13 with high schoolers meeting from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and junior highers from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Camp is open to any appropriate age student from any school. It is not restricted to Hall athletes only.

Cost is $35, which includes shirt and instruction.

There will be open gyms for all high school Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and summer league will be Thursdays.
