They’re back! As sure as spring teases us with warmer weather and more sunshine, those elements are just the ticket for the wildflowers in the Illinois Valley to start popping, like this bloodroot pictured at right. On Saturday and Sunday, Starved Rock State Park is playing host to a wildflower pilgrimage — guided hikes to view the spring wildflowers, including bluebells, trillium, Dutchman britches and more. The hikes leave from the Starved Rock Visitor Center at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. According to park personnel, the hikes will be of varying lengths and times, and guides will inform participants of the different hikes before setting out to find these flowery surprises. There is no charge to participate. Hikers are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear for hiking; some trails could be muddy. BCR photo/Terri Simon
