Earth Day: Celebrating the Earth Earth Day is an annual event, which is celebrated on April 22. Events are planned around the world and are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. Today it is celebrated in more than 193 countries each year.

It was in 1969, when peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring. A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teaching event first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in recognition of his work.

The first Earth Day family had participants and celebrants in 2,000 colleges and universities, roughly 10,000 primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities across the United States. It also brought out about 20 million American for peaceful demonstrations who were in favor of environmental reform.

Today, Earth Day is said to be the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year. Environmental groups have sought to make Earth Day into a day of action which changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

Wrestling for a seat on the swing Former pro wrestler puts on a show to raise money for area playgrounds

PRINCETON — The kids pack into the arena, anxiously awaiting the title fight for the belt …

Oohs and ahhs fill the gymnasium as the Chi-Town Hitman twists the Playground with a gravity-defying flying seesaw move, and the Empty Playground goes down for the count in the clutches of a jungle gym monkey bar.

The crowd celebrates the truth … the Empty Schoolyard never stood a chance against the champ.

Frankie Wolsfeld spent the early stages of his adult life throwing his basketball-sized biceps around wrestling rings and cages all across the globe.

The “Chi-Town Hitman” — as he is affectionately known by fans everywhere — moved to Princeton close to 10 years ago to work at ServiceMaster DSI, and even if he’s not springing from the top ropes anymore, his spirit for entertainment and generosity will never lose their luster.

“Rumble for the Kids started five years ago for an Easter Seals event at the Bureau County Fairgrounds,” Wolsfeld said, mentioning the event has now been redirected toward establishing great opportunities in the Princeton Elementary School (PES) District. “The money raised from the event will help build new playgrounds in the district through the PES Plays program.”

Years back, Wolsfeld was talking with a good friend who brought up the idea of a pro wrestling charity event in Princeton. Wolsfeld reached out to his mighty ring of pro wrestling contacts all across the country, and Rumble for the Kids was born.

On Saturday, April 30, professional wrestling personalities of the last three decades will throw their bodies around Pannebaker Gym in Logan Junior High. A wrestling ring will be set up on the basketball court, and wrestlers will be pulling out all the stops from their arsenal of entertainment.

“The kids have an amazing

time. It’s a packed house, elbow to elbow, and every seat is full of kids screaming and enjoying the event,” Wolsfeld said, proud to say the wrestlers bring all the theatrics, the costumes, the lights and the music you’d find at a prime time metropolitan event.

“It’s larger than life for a lot of the kids that come to the show.”

Wolsfeld indicated many of his wrestling buddies have come back for a few years now because it’s so much fun to showcase their talent and donate their time to a great cause. They will be doing a meet and greet on Saturday, April 9, at both Kramer’s Kitchen and Grandma Rosie’s, where the wrestlers will be signing autographs and showing the community members their soft hearts under their tough exteriors.

“We’ve always had a positive community response, and everyone’s been very happy with how polite, giving and friendly the wrestlers are,” said Wolsfeld, who loves bringing celebrities, and the commerce, travelers and attractions that come with them, into town. “If you get 30 wrestlers in town — all of them 250 to 350 pounds — there’s going to be a lot of food sold that weekend. It’s a win-win for the community.”

Rumble for the Kids tickets will be $10, and they are available at Grandma Rosie’s and through students who bring ticket forms home to their families and friends. The Top 5 sellers will get prizes like a bicycle or Dr. Dre Beats headphones, along with recognition up in the ring the day of the event.

“When I first came to Princeton, I really wanted to make a splash by helping the community,” Wolsfeld said, noting his vision has always been to offer in whatever way he can, professionally or otherwise. “You can’t just expect to take, take, take, but you’ve got to want to give back to the community you’re serving.”

Doors will open for Rumble for the Kids at 4 p.m., with bell time at 5 p.m., at Logan Junior High Pannebaker Gymnasium on Saturday, April 30. Wolsfeld said concessions, memorabilia, T-shirts, autographed pics and programs will all be available for purchase, and he hopes to match or surpass the $14,000 raised last year.

Princeton artist hands out colorful instruction to her surroundings

PRINCETON — The stick figure rests on the canvas, waiting for some much needed maintenance. The painter takes a swig off his/her cocktail and then takes a swipe across the easel — thus beginning the administration of art. A few lines here, a stroke or two there, and voila — a masterpiece is created.

Liana Hall owns Princeton Arts Academy and has always been a fan of eliciting the brightest colors from her companions. She has hosted Bottle and a Brush — a workshop where participants enjoy a glass of wine … or two … while creating a beautiful painting — once every week or so for the last three years. Her only requirements for participants are they bring an open-minded smile, a few friends, and a paintbrush with no expectations.

“These classes put everybody on a level playing field,” Hall said, who teaches the classes in the Kompany Down Under, the banquet center below the Kompany lounge on Main Street in Princeton. “You put an apron on, and you’re an equal with everybody working together. I put people in tight quarters deliberately, so that it feels like a community.”

Hall supplies the participants with a blank canvas, an assortment of brushes and hundreds of different colors of paint. She begins with enthusiasm and

continues with patience, walking each painter through every line and curve of a tree, an owl, a flower or an elephant.

She said it’s great to see the confidence levels in the room rise as each canvas accepts the layers of paint, and although some newcomers study their work with a fine tooth comb, they all leave with the sense of achievement only a relaxed environment can offer.

“As a teacher you have to build trust because it doesn’t look good until the end when you’ve put all those details in,” Hall said, having studied at the Art Institute in Chicago. “I’ll constantly say, ‘Trust me, it doesn’t look good now, but it will turn out OK.’” Hall noted the event has turned into a ladies night out for many area residents, and students help each other throughout the process — leaning over each other’s shoulders and flinging suggestions with a flick of their brush — even if they entered the room that evening as strangers.

“Artwork is a dance; you give and take and teach them to explore the lesson and their abilities,” Hall said, noting every creative outlet on earth is amplified by collective laughter. “I want people to explore more mediums and think creatively instead of just in black and white as they’re taught.”

Hall gained her love for structure and composition from her parents, and learned a multi-faceted approach to

fellow members of society from her time in the city, even as her roots called her back home. Originally studying to be a heart surgeon, Hall now opens the canals of continuity, as she believes art evokes transcendent emotions and allows us to guide each other to the greatest heights.

“I teach the same instructions to everybody, but each painting turns out different,” Hall said, noting she wants her students to explore the boundaries of their comfort zone while creating, as the finest classrooms are where pupils inspire the professor.

“There needs to be energy in it all while we still keep the mood light,” Hall said, noting people don’t have to paint like Picasso to love the colors they contact. “The classes are enjoyable because you have to interact, and everyone leaves feeling more confident in their skills as an artist.”

Educational endeavors Carus announces 15th annual Summer Science Camp

If history is any indication, at 8 a.m. on April 27, the phone in Carus Corporation’s community outreach office will be ringing off the hook. April 27 is Summer Science Camp registration day.

“It’s always an exciting day here. Parents race to get their children on the list, and it fills up pretty quickly,” said Kegan Pakula, Carus Community Outreach Coordinator. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Carus’ 15th annual Science Camp will be held July 11-15 this year at Peru Catholic School. The free science camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day and is open to all Illinois Valley area students entering sixth grade in the fall. Campers participate in hands-on activities, learning about chemistry, physics, biology, geology, ecology and astronomy.

Dan Fitzpatrick, who heads the chemistry department at St. Bede Academy, will begin as camp director this year.

Fitzpatrick’s resume includes more than 10 years teaching science in LaMoille, where he was head of the science department. He is also an experienced science camp instructor, creating and teaching lessons for the University of Illinois Extension’s Natural Resources Educational Consortium, for Northern Illinois University’s Loredo Taft Campus, and for the Sun Foundation, where he is the lead science teacher for their Art and Science in the Woods program.

“In my career, I have been fortunate to meet a great community of people who look to guide our youth to love science, nature and inquiry. This summer camp is going to be an incredible time for the students, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to be the new director,” said Fitzpatrick.

​PRINCETON — Thursday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m., patrons can learn the history of the horseless carriage. Research historian David Kolzow is a retired appraiser who has won many awards for restoring early automobiles. In addition to giving an overview of early automotive history, he will present photos of some of the 1896-1940 vintage cars he has restored through the years.

On Monday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. during movie night, the library will show a 1954 movie about a wheelchair bound photographer who spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.

On Thursday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m., three bell ringing groups will perform a variety of music at the Princeton Public Library. Tunes will include patriotic, classical, religious and folk themes and will be performed by the following groups from the First United Methodist Church: • Bells 101 is a group that has been together for about two years and meets for practice weekly. This group is open to anyone who wants to learn to play bells.

• Kid Bells is for third through fifth graders who have been meeting twice monthly since last fall.

• The sextet from the Elm City Bells is a group from the established Elm City Bell

Choir which meets weekly.

SPRING VALLEY — Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library in Spring Valley, is offering a “Rules of the Road Review” course for all citizens in the Illinois Valley area. The course is on April 22 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is a free program and the purpose of the course is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination. The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations, and also provides information on the vision screening. will run from April 10–23. This means that if patrons have any items (books, DVDs, VCs, CDs and magazines) checked out and they are overdue, they can bring them into the library or drop them into the book drop on the west side of the building and they will not be charged a fine on those items. However, if an item is damaged or lost, the patron must pay the full amount for the item. Also, if a patron has a previous fine, stop by the circulation desk where the librarians will cut the fine in half, provided they pay the amount at that time. The reduction in a patron’s fine is once per patron. Also during these two weeks, there will be free replacement on lost and/or damaged Richard Mautino library cards. LAMOILLE — The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

Walnut has a number of new books that were added in April.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m.

PERU — The public is invited to hear Tom Emery as he talks about the Civilian Conservation Corp from its beginnings in the 1930’s to World War II. Part of the New Deal, the CCC was a public work relief program for unemployed, single men working to plant trees, build park buildings and other projects across the country. The CCC program is Thursday, April 21, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Peru Public Library. Come learn how the Starved Rock Lodge connects to the Civilian Conservation Corp.

‘How to Make Your Money Last’

You’ve no plans for alarm clocks, suitand-tie combos, rush-hour commutes, cubicles or boring meetings. You’re ready to retire and leave them all behind — but can you afford to avoid those things forever? With “How to Make Your Money Last”

by Jane Bryant Quinn, you’ve got a working chance of it.

What will you do when you can finally do what you want?

That’s an important question, says Quinn. The routine you followed for 20, 30, even 40 years probably won’t be the same after retirement, and you may need some direction. You might be happy about not looking at a calendar all the time, but you won’t “want to look at a … calendar that’s blank.”

The key to making the most of your retirement is to make the most of your money. You’ll particularly want to know how to “prudently parcel your money out” so you don’t take too much or too little of the funds available to you for the duration. There are also things to consider: tax issues, investment tools, tricks for bringing more to your bank account, and ways to

protect your spouse.

On that latter point, says Quinn, “talk, talk, talk.” Before you retire, discuss expectations and concerns with your spouse, and bring all money matters to the table.

It’s not easy, she admits, but it is necessary.

“It’s time for a financial scan” next, she says. Know how to “rightsize,” consider housing needs, look at savings, and figure out how you’ll budget to trim expenses and still enjoy retirement. Know “Seven Special Situations” that “can’t be shoehorned neatly into the … process” and learn when it’s perfectly acceptable to tell your children “no.”

Educate yourself on the ins and outs of Social Security, and how waiting to file may make a huge difference, long-term. See why Quinn says Social Security won’t “go bankrupt.” Learn to choose the best pension benefits and why buying a pension may be advantageous. Know how to get the right health insurance coverage. Learn about home equity loans and how to leverage your home’s value. And remember: “There’s no clean way of knowing whom to trust.”

Oh, so much to remember! So much to learn, too, but author Jane Bryant Quinn makes it easier in “How to Make Your Money Last.”

From the first pages filled with ideas for filling your time, to the choosing of a Power of Attorney, Quinn covers almost every kind of money matter a retiring Boomer might need to know – all presented with terms and formulas that are simplified, even for the most mathematically-challenged. I appreciated that Quinn starts most points with need-to-know information, offers other places to turn for help, and includes things of which readers should beware.

All that, and an informal tone make this book a pleasant, helpful read for current retirees, those about to retire, and younger readers who may want to retire someday.

And since that’s you, no doubt, “How to Make Your Money Last” is a book you should plan to read.

Gateway Services to host Trivia Night PRINCETON — Gateway Services will host a Trivia Night on Saturday, April 23, at Shandy’s Pub & Grub (formerly River Valley Bowl, Routes 29 and 18) in Henry.

Teams can consist of eight persons, but individuals can be matched up to form a team that evening.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., with the meal being served at 5 p.m. and trivia starting at 6 p.m. Advance tickets, which include a dinner of fried chicken, spaghetti, potato wedges, veggie, salad and dessert, are $20 per person; $25 at the door. Team tickets purchased in advance will be entered into a drawing for $50.

If you are not interested in being on a team and participating in the trivia contest, you may still purchase a ticket for the dinner, sit at a “spectator table,” participate in the other activities that evening. A cash bar will be available.

Star National Flat Track Series classes and all AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series classes will be running.

On Sunday, the gate admission for the races will be $20 with children 5 and under being free. Both Saturday and Sunday, the gates will open at 8 a.m.; practice will begin at 10 a.m., and the races will be at noon. All entrance to the fairgrounds for both the races and the beer tent will be through the Western Avenue entrance.

Saturday evening following the races, there will be no gate admissions to the fairgrounds and no cover charge to the beer tent. You must be 21 to enter the beer tent. During the entertainment, there will be drawings for the annual drawdown. If you are interested in a drawdown ticket, contact a fair board member.

HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Fair Association will be having a beer tent with two bands on April 30 in the Activity Building on the Marshall-Putnam Fairgrounds in Henry with entrance to the fairgrounds from Western Avenue.

The first band to play will be Machine Gun Willie QC. They will play from 6 to 8 p.m. Playing from 9 to 11 p.m. will be the Joe Stamm Band. There will be no cover charge to enter.

This is the weekend of the Davey Camlin Memorial Races at the Marshall-Putnam Fairgrounds. There is a $15 gate admission to attend the races; children 5 and under are free.

Saturday will be all the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series classes and all AMA District 17 classes.

DIXON — Sauk Valley Community College will host the 32nd annual child fair, “A Day at the Movies,” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Children can dress up as their favorite movie character and walk the red carpet. Event activities will include Miller’s Petting Zoo, Caricaturist Kevin Berg, bounce house, inflatable obstacle course, barrel rides, car seat safety checks, emergency vehicles on display, interactive booths and exhibit displays.

Admission is free and open to the public. Some activities will have a fee and a few exhibitors will be selling items.

Caricature fees will be donated to FLORISSA to support Autism Awareness.

L/O Trivia Night LAMOILLE — The LaMoille and Ohio Athletic Boosters are teaming up for a Trivia Night Saturday, April 30 at the LaMoille Lions Club. Tickets for Cardinals-Cubs games at Wrigley, including a late-season showdown on Sept. 25, will be one of the many items on silent auction.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with trivia beginning at 7 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per team with 6-10 players per teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Southern Senior Golf

The Southern Senior Golf meets once a week at area golf courses around north central Illinois. It is held on Mondays through Oct. 3 with a couple Tuesdays mixed in for holidays. Start time is 8 a.m.

Costs is $25 for 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, and prizes. There may be up to 100 players every week, so golfers need to call the club ahead of time to reserve a cart.

PRINCETON — This year’s Rumble For The Kids will be Saturday, April 30, at Logan Junior High School’s Pannebaker Gymnasium. Doors will open at 4 p.m. with a 5 p.m. bell time.

Rumble For The Kids is an annual wrestling event that helps raise money for non-profit organizations that assist in helping local kids.

St. Margaret’s Health 10K

SPRING VALLEY —The fourth annual St. Margaret’s Health 10K and 3 Mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at St. Margaret’s. Cost is $30 for the 10K and $25 for the 3M Run/Walk.

Race-day registration and packet pickup will take place from 7 to 8:50 a.m. at the west pavilion parking lot.

Proceeds will benefit the ongoing renovations and improvements to St. Margaret’s Health facilities including the esophageal and colon cancer prevention center.

LASALLE — The second annual LEAD 6-on-6 volleyball fundraiser will be Saturday, April 30 in Sellett Gym at LaSalle-Peru Township High School. The tournament hosted by LP’s LEAD (Leadership, Education, Awareness of Disabilities) team will raise money to support the Starved Rock Area 16 Special Olympics.

Eagle Run/Walk

PRINCETON — The third annual Eagle Run/Walk sponsored by Princeton Christian Academy will be Saturday, June 11.

There are different options available:

5K Run/Walk for 12 and under ($15 and 13 and older ($25), 10K Run 12 and under ($20) and 13 and older ($30) or “Run from your seat” ($25 or more donation). Race fees increase by $5 after May 31.

The race will start at 8 a.m. at Zearing Park. Registrations received after May 31 will not be guaranteed a T-shirt.

MENDOTA — This year’s Thank Dank 5K race will be Sunday, May 1 at Lake Kakuska in Mendota. Registration and check-in will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. with the race to start at 10 a.m.

Registration must be received by Friday, April 15 to receive a T-shirt. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the race. Preregistered participants by April 24 may pick up their race day materials between 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the United Methodist Church, 100 6th St., Mendota.

There will also be a Fun Walk in which children 10 and under can walk for free.

Children shirts are $10 and must be ordered by April 15.
