Ready to ride?

Registration for the 2017 Z Tour Bike Ride to be held in Princeton on Saturday, July 15, is now open. Riders can save by registering prior to June 16 and join more than 700 cyclists who will enjoy some of the best paved, low-traffic roads that North Central Illinois has to offer.

Cyclists in the Z Tour Bike Ride enjoy well-marked routes, outstanding support at the themed rest stops, Peru Bike Works mechanics and a post-ride meal.

Additionally, organizers are planning for local band favorite, 212, to entertain from noon to 3 p.m. at Zearing Park on ride day.

One of the best features of the Z Tour Bike Ride is that there is something for every level of cyclist. Participants can choose from routes of 10, 30, 50, 65 (new), and 100 miles (new).

Second Story kids remove graffiti vandalism

PRINCETON — The kids from Second Story spent a recent Saturday cleaning the graffiti vandalism that was recently left on several businesses throughout the north end of town.

Jeff and Dana Van Autreve of Second Story were made aware of the situation and told that the businesses owners were responsible for having it cleaned, but some had not yet had it removed. That’s when they were asked if they’d be interested in having students from the local teen center volunteer their time and clean it up.

“We thought this was a perfect opportunity to give back once again to the community, so we asked the kids Friday night to please help, explaining

that if that had happened to Jeff and I’s building, we would be frustrated, too,” Dana said.

So a list was given to the organization on where the graffiti was located, and Sherwin Williams of Princeton donated the graffiti cleaner.

Dana said there were 12 kids who showed up on Saturday, April 8, to help clean.

“It took them about two and one-half hours, but all were cleaned off except the silo, which is too dangerous,” she said. “The kids had a great time, but their only concern was they would be looked upon as the ones who actually did it.”

Dana said it’s important to the kids he community knows it was not them who caused this vandalism.

And according to Princeton Police Chief Tom

Root’s recent update on the situation, it is believed the suspect is from the Chicago area.

Root described the person as “definitely an outof-towner.” The suspect had been recorded on surveillance videos.

Root also said the graffiti was not gang-related, but more likely artwork that had no meaning.

At the Princeton City Council meeting held Monday, March 20, Princeton resident Geraldine Woodleaf pushed to have the graffiti removed immediately because she said it was a form of advertising for the suspect who did it.

CPASA announces National Take Back Day On April 29, CPASA (Community Partners Against Substance Abuse), Princeton Police Department, Granville Police Department, Tiskilwa Police Department, Wyanet Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Medications will be accepted for disposal at the following locations: • Princeton Police Department, 605 Elm Place, Princeton from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Granville Police Department/Village Hall, 316 S. McCoy St., Granville from 10 a.m. to noon.

• Tiskilwa Fire Department, 135 N. High St., Tiskilwa from 9 a.m. to noon.

• Wyanet Police Department/Village Hall, 101 S. Maple St., Wyanet from 9 a.m. to noon.

The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.

Last October, Americans turned in 366 tons (more than 730,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall in its 12 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 7.1 million pounds — more

than 3,500 tons — of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines — flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash — both pose potential safety and health hazards.

CPASA also has the ongoing Prescription Drug Disposal Program called P2D2 with locations at the Princeton Police Department, Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Jail, Spring Valley Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Granville Police Department, Ladd Police Department, and Walnut Police Department.

CPASA has collected over 10,570 pounds of drugs locally since July 2010.

Locals and their canine friends unite to save lives Plan to attend Bark for Life/Relay for Life of Bureau County kickoff event PRINCETON — Families and their furry friends will join together to honor and celebrate the lifelong contributions of canine caregivers to cancer patients at the American Cancer Society Bark for Life event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Zearing Park in Princeton. By supporting the event, you can help the American Cancer Society save lives and help free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer.

The celebration will include a family friendly dog walk around beautiful Zearing Park, a pet blessing, K9 unit demonstrations by Deputy Chica and her handler Bureau County Deputy Chad Hall, a doggy bank raffle, pet luminaria sales for the Relay event, and much more. The first 50 dogs to register will get a free bandana (one size fits most).

The event is part of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement which is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, we celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for life-

saving change. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.

Registration is only $10 for each family and their canine companions to participate in this walk. Dogs must be current on vaccinations and on leashes at all times. Registration opens at 12:30 p.m. Supplies for local animal rescues will also be collected, so everyone who attends is asked to bring a donation of dog or cat food, treats, cleaning supplies, paper towels, blankets, laundry detergent, collars, leashes, etc. which will be distributed to Bishop’s Small Dog Rescue, Tri-County Humane Society and Friends of Strays.

Health career scholarships available

PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applications for its 2017 health career scholarship awards.

Scholarship applications may be obtained from the guidance office of any high school in Bureau County, Illinois Valley Community College or Sauk Valley Community College.

An application may also be obtained from the hospital marketing department, gift shop or Perry Memorial Hospital’s website (www. perrymemorial.org).

Applications now available for PHS scholarships

PRINCETON — The application for the Princeton Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Ruth E. Patterson Lang Scholarship Fund is now available at the scholarship link on the Princeton High School website, www.phs-il. org. Paper copies are available in the guidance office at 103 S. Euclid Ave. in Princeton.

Any graduate of Princeton High School is eligible to apply for these undergraduate scholarships. Applications must be returned to Debra Dullard, director of guidance, Princeton High School, by noon on Friday, May 19.

Applications are available for Zearing Scholarship

PRINCETON — Applications are now available for nurse practitioner scholarships through the Illinois Farm Bureau Rural Nurse Practitioner Scholarship Program.

There will be five scholarships, worth $4,000 each, granted this year.

The scholarship program, now in its 25th year, helps encourage and develop the pool of rural health practitioners to help meet primary health care needs in rural Illinois.

Students who receive scholarships agree to practice for two years in an approved rural area in Illinois.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be Illinois residents and be a registered nurse accepted or enrolled in an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program. Funding is provided by the Rural Illinois Medical Student Assistance Program.

Any Bureau County resident who graduates from one of the high schools in Bureau County, including the Illinois Math and Science Academy, who has applied and been accepted for admission to the University of Illinois is eligible to apply for the Zearing Scholarship.

Three area youth come to the rescue WALNUT — Each month, the Rotary Club of Walnut recognizes a local resident or group for the manner in which the recipient exemplifies Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.”

“One of our senior citizens recently took a tumble,” said Rotary President Charlie Gonigam. “These three young people, none of whom the woman knew, came to her aid and assisted her in her time of trouble.”

Gonigam went on to say, “What remarkable youngsters! They recognized a problem

and took action without any expectation of reward … THAT is the epitome of ‘Service Above Self’.”

The library recently added new DVDs to the library collection, including “Planet Earth II,” “20th Century Women,” “Two for the Road,” “Lion” and “Hidden Figures.” New large print books at the library include “Miss Julia Weathers the Storm” by Ann B. Ross, “Forever a Hero” by Linda Lael Miller and “An Uncommon Protector” by Shelley Shepard Gray.

WYANET — The Wyanet Library’s Book Group meets on the fourth Thursday. The April book is “The Marriage of Opposites” by Alice Hoffman. This book, a forbidden love story, is set on a tropical island about the woman who gave birth to Camille Pissarro, also known as the “father of impressionism.” There are copies of the book available to read.

The group meets Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m.

The library now features night computer classes. These classes meet on the first and third Thursdays each month at 6 p.m. The classes are learning about Windows 10. There is one Windows 10 computer available with available WI-FI for personal laptops.

The library is switching up the daytime classes. The night computer classes are doing so well the staff thought perhaps a writing group or a how-to self-publish class might be interesting.

SPRING VALLEY — Secretary of State

Jesse White, in cooperation with the library, is offering a Rules of the Road review course for all citizens in the Illinois Valley area. The course is on April 21, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is a free program, and the purpose of the course is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination.

The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations, and also provides information on the vision screening. Call the library at 815663-4741 to register or stop by the library at 215 E. Cleveland St., Spring Valley.

Every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, adult coloring is offered at the library to help you relax and release some of the stress in your life. Coloring pictures and colored pencils are supplied by the library.

The children’s library has story time on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6 p.m. During this time, children are able to read stories, given a craft to put together and are served refreshments.

LADD — Tuesdays at 10 a.m., the library holds preschool story times, which include stories, crafts, songs and snacks. Children from ages 2 to 5 are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian.

WALNUT — The library is asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

LAMOILLE —The library has received many great new reads for adults, teens and children of all ages. New videos have also made their way to the library.

No need to pay for a movie rental when you can pick them up free at the library with a valid library card.

Therapy Thursdays is ongoing at the library. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered

by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services. Call 815-659-3283 for information. (The fax number is the same as the phone number).

LADD — The library sponsors an adult coloring club on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult card club is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

DIXON — Sauk Valley Community College will host the 33rd annual Child Fair “Under the Sea” on Saturday, April 22, at SVCC. The event is free and open to the public with booths open from 9 a.m. to noon. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Children and families can enjoy Miller’s Petting Zoo, barrel rides, Sauk YMCA activities, real emergency vehicles and interactive booths. Parents can take advantage of the seat safety check. Some exhibitors will have items for sale and the SVCC Single Parent Committee will be selling food items with proceeds going to the Single Parent Scholarship fund.

You can get your picture taken with “Once Upon a Dream Characters” Cinderella, Bat Hero, Woman of Wonder and the Arabian Princess between 10 a.m. and noon.

Ottawa Art League calls for amateur artists

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Art League is looking for adult amateur artists to enter the 59th annual Town & Country Art Show to be held May 13 at Jeremiah Joe Coffee, 807 LaSalle St. in Ottawa. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The show is sponsored by the Ottawa Art League, but the show is open to

PRINCETON — Registration for the 2017 Z Tour Bike Ride to be held in Princeton on Saturday, July 15, is now open. Riders can save by registering

prior to June 16 and join more than 700 cyclists who will enjoy some of the best paved, low-traffic roads that North Central Illinois has to offer.

Cyclists in the Z Tour Bike Ride enjoy wellmarked routes, outstanding support at the themed rest stops, Peru Bike Works mechanics and a post-ride meal. Additionally, organizers are planning for local band favorite, 212, to entertain from noon to 3 p.m. at Zearing Park on ride day.

One of the best features of the Z Tour Bike Ride is that there is something for every level of cyclist.

Participants can choose from routes of 10, 30, 50, 65 (new), and 100 miles (new).

The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Source of Water: DE PUEThe Illinois EPA does not consider the source water of DePue's wells to be susceptible to IOC, VOC, SOC, or pathogenic contamination.

This determination was made based on the identification of potential sources and routes of contamination, land-use activities around the wells, available hydrogeologic data, and monitoring results. Materials reviewed included the Well Site Survey Report, published in 1989, and subsequent investigations conducted in the DePue area. The evaluation of existing information identified two activities within the 1,000 foot Phase I Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) of the wells and one additional activity outside of the WHPA. Map code 62556 is a Casey’s General Store gas station that is also the location of a leaking underground storage tank (LPC# 0110305003). The Village of DePue has enacted a Restricted Groundwater Use Ordinance in this area that prohibits the installation of potable water supply wells. The Illinois EPA Division of Land Pollution approved this ordinance (I.D. R09102301) on October 10, 2009.

Additional information regarding this ordinance can be found at: http://epadata.epa.state.il.us/land/gwordinance/.The remaining identified activity within the WHPA is the DePue/New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Corp. Superfund site boundary (map code 24968) that intersects the WHPA of DePue’s wells. The DePue/New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Corp. site operated between 1905 and 1990 and was utilized primarily for zinc smelting and sulfuric acid manufacturing, paint pigment production, and ammonium phosphate fertilizer production. An additional leaking underground storage tank (map code 24969) was identified outside the WHPA of DePue’s wells but within the boundary of the Superfund site. The underground storage tanks were removed and the site received a “no further remediation” certification from the Illinois EPA on April 3, 2013.
