Three extra days!

While we’ve come accustomed to filing our taxes on April 15 every year, the American public will get three extra days to get those federal tax documents in the mail or filed online.

That’s right. You get three extra days to gather all your paperwork and file that federal tax return. The tax deadline is Monday, April 18.

The three extra days are compliments of Washington, D.C. Washington celebrates Emancipation Day on Friday, April 15, this year.

Emancipation Day typically is celebrated on April 16. It’s the day President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill ending slavery in Washington, D.C. April 16 falls on a Saturday in 2016, however, so Emancipation Day will be celebrated on Friday, April 15.

Which means tax day is being pushed to April 18.

The same applies to your Illinois taxes, which is also set for Monday, April 18.

Walnut’s new wildlife area Expected to be open in June

WALNUT — Residents of Walnut will soon have approximately 60 more acres of park district to enjoy. In January, the Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation District officially donated the land that was previously the Ross Wildlife Refuge.

Clean-up crews have been working to prepare the site for public use and hope to have it open in June.

James Schoff of the Walnut Park District said, “We’re getting close; there’s still quite a bit of general clean-up. We’ve got some junk and scrap metal to remove. We’ll be establishing the parking area and will eventually be putting in some nature trails, so there’s more access to the other areas.”

The site hasn’t been open to the public since the 1980s, and the 23-acre pond will soon be providing ample opportunities for local anglers to test their skills.

“The Illinois DNR did a survey last summer, and the pond is in very good health.

There’s bass and bluegill.

It didn’t show any crappie, but I’ve heard they’re in there. The only thing that was recommended was stocking it with catfish to help keep the gizzard shad in check,” said Schoff.

Gizzard shad are an invasive small fish whose high consumptive demands can help collapse the ecosystem of which they’re a part.

No motorized boats will be allowed, but rowboats, canoes and kayaks will be welcome.

While the site will allow fishing, the property still carries an easement held by the Natural Land Institute (NLI), and hunting and trapping will not be allowed.

The NLI is a non-profit organization serving as a regional land trust and has helped preserve and restore more than 16,000 acres of natural land in northern Illinois since 1958.

Along with the pond and the wooded areas, the site also features fields filled with native prairie grass and flowers and will provide visitors with opportunities to view Illinois wildlife in a natural habitat.

“It’s a great asset to the Walnut Park District and the local area,” Schoff said.

Peru to host the largest gathering of World War II fighter aircraft in more than a decade

PERU — Illinois Valley Regional Airport (Walter Duncan Field) in Peru will host 11 of the 16 remaining TBM Avengers that are still flying around the world, as well as almost 50 other World War II aircraft from around the country on Saturday, April 16.

Peru is expecting more than 200 aircraft total and more than 10,000 visitors for a one-day event to honor all veterans. Parking and admission will be free. A morning “wake-

up fly” will take place around 8 a.m., and at 9 a.m. the American Legion will perform a flag raising ceremony. The TBM Avengers will fly at noon with other events taking place throughout the day.

Lunch will be available for purchase from the Illinois Valley Flying Club.

The pilots will be donating their time, and many of the aircraft are owned by museums. The event is sponsored through efforts from the City of Peru, the Illinois Valley Regional Airport, the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation and Cham-

lin and Associates. The event’s largest expense is, unsurprisingly, aircraft fuel.

The Grumman TBM Avenger is a carrier based torpedo bomber that inflicted heavy damage to the Japanese fleet during the war in the Pacific.

Introduced in 1942, the Avenger has a top speed of 275 mph and first saw action during the Battle of Midway; 9,839 Avengers were built, and they were officially retired from service in 1960.

Register now for ‘Money Smart Kids Family Fun’

PRINCETON — Thursday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m., Lisa Furleigh from Quilting in the Valley will teach English Paper Piecing, a hand quilting technique using fabric wrapped around paper patterns. The project for the evening is a summer themed ornament using jewel-shaped paper pieces and patriotic fabrics.

Pre-registration is required and participants must purchase a $6 kit which contains a needle, paper pieces, pre-cut fabric, beads and beading cord, and a rat tail with which to hang the ornament. Bring your own scissors, light weight thread in navy, white or off white, and fabric glue pen. The library will have some of these materials on hand if needed.

SPRING VALLEY — The library is celebrating National Library Week from April 10–16 with some activities and ideas.

On Friday, April 15, the Rules of the Road Review Course will be presented from 9:3011:30 a.m. Call the library to register for the class. Walk-ins are welcome.

The children’s library will have Spring Bingo on Thursday, April 14, from 5-6 p.m.

In addition, Amnesty Weeks at the library will run from April 10–23. This means that if patrons have any items (books, DVDs, VCs, CDs and magazines) checked out and they are overdue, they can bring them into the library or drop them into the book drop on the west side of the building and they will not be charged a fine on those items. However, if an item is damaged or lost, the patron must pay the full amount for the item. Also, if a patron has a previous fine, stop by the circulation desk where the librarians will cut the fine in half, provided they pay the amount at that time. The reduction in a patron’s fine is once per patron. Also during these two weeks, there will be free replacement on lost and/or damaged Richard Mautino library cards. LAMOILLE — Thursday, April 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., the library will host Therapy Thursdays. Spend the afternoon coloring with friends. Materials will be furnished.

The library will also be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

MINERAL — The Mineral-Gold Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week until Saturday, April 16. Stop in and register to win an adult or children’s gift basket.

Anyone coming in during the week will have their name put in the drawing for the baskets.

The library will also be giving away children’s small paperback books to all the children who come in that week. Stop in and enjoy a cookie and pick up a good book to read. There will also be a candy guessing jar for adults and children to be given away.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

Walnut has a number of new books that were added in April.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services. Call 815659-3283 for information. (The fax number is the same as the phone number).

WYANET — The library’s 2nd Thursday at the Library April program will be “Container Gardens” by Darlene Ray, a master gardener with the University of Illinois Extension Office.

Ray has been a master gardener for about 13 years, but has always loved to garden. She has stated that she loves all plants, but especially herbs and vegetables. Ray lives and gardens in Serena Township. On Thursday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m., the master gardener will bestow her knowledge of gardening in all sorts of containers. She will also discuss the pros and cons of buying plants locally. Refreshments will be served following the program.

The library’s computer class continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month through May. Dorene Stalter will answer computer questions. The computer classes start at 1 p.m.

90 writers to attend Writers on the River

Event set for July 9 in East Peoria EAST PEORIA — Writers On The River, an author signing and book sale event, will feature 90 romance authors at the Par-A-Dice Hotel, 21 Blackjack Blvd. in East Peoria on Saturday, July 9. New York Times and USA Today bestsellers will be in attendance. This event is hosted by Twinsie Talk Book Reviews and Green Moose Productions. The signing will begin at noon for VIP guests and 1 p.m. for general admission and will end at 4 p.m.

Jillian Jacobs, author and co-host, said, “Self-published authors do not have

the luxury of their books being offered for sale in stores, so these author events serve as a way to be introduced to new readers. I have attended many author signings across the country. As an Illinois native, I believed we needed a book signing in Central Illinois as many are hosted in the Chicago area. We have had such positive feedback, we are already planning our return in July 2017.”

​LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host “Money Smart Kids Family Fun,” an event of books, games and crafts, especially for children aged 5-8 and their families, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

This family fun event will provide children and their families with opportunities to learn about money and financial literacy. Partnering with Money Smart Week DeKalb County, the library is pleased to offer this important and entertaining program created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

The program includes a picture book read-aloud of “Start Saving, Henry,”

by Nancy Carlson, read by the library’s guest reader, Mayor Grove. The first 15 families to register, and in attendance will receive a free copy of the book to take home.

The event will also feature “shopping” at the Sweet Shoppe; children will use pretend money to “purchase” a selection of candies to take home. The Sweet Shoppe is an appealing activity that will help children learn to recognize U.S. coins and currency and will encourage them to improve accuracy in counting money. A third activity will inspire creativity and good financial habits when children design and decorate their

own ceramic bank to take home; the bank will be a special reminder and encouragement for them to become savers. Additionally, all children will receive a book selection as a gift from First Book and the library.

This free program is open to the public. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Registration is required as space is limited to 35 children and their families.

Lip sync contestants wanted

UTICA — A new way to raise funds for local non-profits is being launched by Starved Rock Lodge and Studstill Media.

Starved Rock’s first Charity Lip Sync Contest will kick off on June 2 in the Great Hall of the Lodge.

Thanks to a popular segment on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” pretend-singing contests between celebrities have become a new and fun competition to see who better lip-syncs the song of their choice. The Starved Rock version is

only limited by the creative talent of the contestants who will be outfitted with a microphone but allowed to enhance their lip syncs with props, costumes and even backup singers.

After each performance, the audience will vote by donating money to that school or non-profit organization. All monetary votes raised at this event will go directly to the organization.

The lip sync contest is open to any non-profit 501c school group or

charity. The organization is responsible for finding their own performer who will lip sync two songs.

Two preliminary nights of competition are scheduled for June 2 and June 9.

The best performers from each of those nights will advance to the finals on June 16 where an additional cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the winner.

‘Concert for a Cause’

PRINCETON — A benefit concert for the Curt Dugosh/Janet Turpen family who lost their home to a tragic fire on Dec. 17, 2015, will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in the Sally Skinner Council Auditorium at Princeton High School.

Performing groups will be from the Princeton High School Music Department, including the JV Choir, Concert

Choir, Men’s Ensemble, Ladies Ensemble and Concert Band. The special guest will be the VanderCook College of Music, Chicago, (Jazz Band, Chorale).

Admission is a free will donation with all proceeds going to the family. If you are unable to attend and would like to make a donation to the family, send it to PHS in care of Emily Moats.

Alathea in Seatonville

SEATONVILLE — At 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, the critically acclaimed duet Alathea will be bringing their unique blend of folk, gospel and mountain melodies to the Seatonville Congregational Church, Independent.

Alathea has been recording, singing and strumming songs since their college years in the late 1990s.

The International Acoustic Music Awards listed them as best group/duo in 2008 for their song “Hurricane” off their My Roots Grow Deeper album and runner-up best group/duo in 2010 for their song “Come Home To Me” from their Tremble album.

Currently, Alathea serve as spokeswomen for the Appalachian Service Project (ASP), a relief mission organization helping poor and disadvantaged folks living in Appalachia.

They tour the country with their great music and stories while also bringing attention to ASP. Alathea will be the featured speakers and musicians at the Seatonville church following its

annual all-church banquet honoring mothers and daughters at 6 p.m.

All folks and families from the Illinois and Bureau Valley region are encouraged to come to the Alathea concert at 7 p.m. and anyone interested in coming to

the banquet honoring mothers and daughters beforehand are welcome too, but will need to make a reservation by contacting Mary Michael at 815-875-1697.

A free will offering to help defray expenses will be taken at the concert.

BVHS to hold Quarter Mania fundraiser MANLIUS — Ping pong balls rattling in a cage, bidders waving fans, tables of friends breaking out in applause and laughter — these are some of the sights and sounds of a Quarter Mania fundraising event.

On Friday, April 15, Bureau Valley High School will host such an event to raise money for Renaissance, the school’s incentive program. Food will be available and doors open to the public at 5:30 p.m. to shop the vendors. The quarter auction will begin at 6:30 p.m.

More than 20 local businesses contribute to the success of the evening event. Each vendor brings

​ TISKILWA — An informational meeting for anyone interested in investigating Crossroads for their students in grades 7-12 will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19.

Prospective students and parents will meet some of the current students and staff, view the facility, and get answers to their questions.

The Bureau Valley Renaissance Program was created three years ago and functions in the school to promote positive behavior, academic success and school pride. It recognizes students who work hard and continually do their best. The group is led by a council of 24 high school students.

“We do all kinds of things throughout the year,” said Chase Gripp, Renaissance Program member. “We give

out free BV T-shirts, have breakfasts to honor students of the month, take a field trip to the bowling alley and movie theater every semester, which is a lot of fun.”

Renaissance also recognizes students and staff birthdays, distributes incentive reward cards for achievement in the classroom and much more. The group leaders meet several times a month to develop and implement programming ideas.

‘An amazing college experience’ High school students can work alongside University of Illinois professors to explore college majors and possible careers.

The conference runs from 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. It is open to any youth (including those not yet in 4-H) who will be at least 14 years of age by Sept. 1, and has completed eighth grade by the time of the conference.

L/O Trivia Night LAMOILLE — The LaMoille and Ohio Athletic Boosters are teaming up for a Trivia Night Saturday, April 30 at the LaMoille Lions Club. Tickets for Cardinals-Cubs games at Wrigley, including a late-season showdown on Sept. 25, will be one of the many items on silent auction.

Hunter safety

PUTNAM — Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at a Department of Natural Resources hunter safety course on Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16, at the Putnam

County Conservation District, Senachwine Unit, Putnam. The class will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

A 1996 state law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter education course before they can receive their first hunting license. Participants completed the course receive a Hunter Education Certification card verifying that they have passed the course of instruction.

The minimum 10-hour course includes instruction in wildlife management, firearms safety, hunter ethnics, game identification, first aid, survival techniques and regulations.

St. Margaret’s 10K

SPRING VALLEY —The fourth annual St. Margaret’s Health 10K and 3 Mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at St. Margaret’s. Cost is $30 for the 10K and $25 for the 3M Run/Walk. Race-day registration and packet pickup will take place from 7 to 8:50 a.m. at the west pavilion parking lot.

PRINCETON — This year’s Rumble For The Kids will be Saturday, April 30, at Logan Junior High School’s Pannebaker Gymnasium. Doors will open at 4 p.m. with a 5 p.m. bell time.

Rumble For The Kids is an annual wrestling event that helps raise money for non-profit organizations that assist in helping local kids.

Thank Dank 5K

MENDOTA — This year’s Thank Dank 5K race will be Sunday, May 1 at Lake Kakuska in Mendota. Registration and check-in will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. with the race to start at 10 a.m. Registration must be received by Friday, April 15 to receive a T-shirt. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the race. Preregistered participants

by April 24 may pick up their race day materials between 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the United Methodist Church, 100 6th St., Mendota.

There will also be a Fun Walk in which children 10 and under can walk for free. Children shirts are $10 and must be ordered by April 15.

SRR Walking Clinic
