Plenty of art at Walnut Public Library WALNUT — Every year, a vendor fair in Walnut draws a large crowd. This year, to help compliment the vendor fair, Walnut Public Library Director Michele McAlvey and friends decided to host a craft/art show at the library to help highlight some of the crafters/artists in the area.

To date, 15 crafters/artisans have signed up to show/sell their items. The craft/art show, which is free to attend, is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the library. Walnut’s vendor fair, which is held at the Walnut Community Center on Main Street, will be held at the same time, and event-goers are encouraged to take in both shows.

At 2 p.m. at the library, McAlvey said Linda VonHolten, an artist from the Rock Falls area, will be hosting an “Artful Party” at the library. VonHolten brings all the supplies and items needed for event-goers to paint a beautiful picture. The cost for this event is $45, and almost half of that fee goes back to the library for its roofing project. This is an adult event. Those wishing to participate should call the library at 815-379-2159 as soon as possible to make a reservation.

PRINCETON — It’s normal to occasionally have feelings of self-doubt, anxiety and depression. Living in a world where technology is pushing us to constantly move faster while publicly sharing every aspect of our lives only increases the likelihood of those negative emotions, especially for teens.

“Reaching Common Ground with Mental Health” was a program hosted by BP Power, the youth group led in partnership with the Community Partners Against Substance Abuse (CPASA), from 6 to 10 p.m. on March 24 at the Bureau County Metro Center.

The evening featured award-winning speaker and author Jeff Yalden.

Yalden has been the nation’s top youth motivational speaker since 1992 and has spoken to millions of teens in all 50 states and in 48 countries.

Dozens of teens from every area high school were present, including a group from the Lincoln’s Challenge Academy in Rantoul.

According to CPASA project coordinator Dawn Conerton, the program, designed to help teens recognize and handle depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide, while also removing the stigma associated mental health, was what the teens chose.

“We’re helping to shine a light on these problems and are providing a safe environment for everyone to be themselves,” BP Power President and Bureau Valley High School student Nick Glubczynski said.

He said the changing times and social media can be both problematic and beneficial, and the group wanted to show other teens they weren’t alone with their problems.

The group also wanted to help others to learn to recognize the warning signs of low self-esteem among their friends.

“We all need to recognize when friends are coming down hard on themselves and to help build them back up. It’s easy to look past it when someone says something negative about themselves, but it may be more serious than you realize. Recognizing a warning sign could help save a life, and that means more than anything,” BP Power member and Putnam County High School

student Olivia Lawley said.

Yalden, who was asked for his opinion of what’s causing the increase in depression and anxiety among teens, shared multiple causes — the “helicopter” parenting-style, which he said restricts the development of coping skills and self-esteem by preventing children from learning from their challenges and mistakes; cell phones and social media; a lack of balance and boundaries; and the grind of everyday life and responsibilities.

Yalden began the high energy program by sharing his own lifelong struggles with depression, anxiety and PTSD. He also shared the struggle he’d faced that very day.

“When I arrived in town today I didn’t want to be here or to do this,” he said, comparing his feelings to those which everyone has felt at some point before having to go to school or work.

That simple and honest admission in itself was

enough to begin to put the teens at ease as they listened to Yalden share how he overcame that feeling and arrived “ready to go.”

Yalden then conducted a series of humorous trust-building exercises which allowed the group to become comfortable and acquainted with each other.

“The more trust and respect we have for each other, the better our relationships will be and the more fun we’ll have tonight,” he said.

Yalden taught the teens about meditation, personal responsibility; healthy relationships; borders and boundaries; self-esteem; how to defuse anxiety; and most importantly, how to accept themselves.

“It’s important to know who you are, but it’s just as important to know who you aren’t. If you live to be accepted by others you’ll begin a pattern where you’ll spend your life always needing more people to accept you. And sometimes, you have to

know how to pick yourself up,” Yalden said.

Cell phones and social media use were also covered. Yalden said cell phones are never going to go away, but added neither is meeting and talking to people eye-to-eye.

“Know when to put the phone down; it’s all about boundaries.” he said, including the impact that sleep, exercise, diet and time with nature can have on mental health.

The teen leaders of BP Power were hopeful that what was learned from Yalden would be used by those present to return to their schools to teach others and to be able to recognize the warning signs of when a friend needs help.

“The event was positive regardless of the topics being very emotional and sensitive. The students gained a better

sense of themselves and their peers. When the event began, we knew a lot of them didn’t know each other, but by the end of the evening, the kids had gained a connection by realizing they’re all in this together and are not alone,” Conerton said.

She added one of the highlights of the evening was seeing the teens working together and gaining the confidence to appreciate and believe in themselves.

“It was great to experience our youth coming together in an effort to decrease the negative stigma of mental health,” she said.

Martin Family Circus to open for Oak Ridge Boys concert

Bone marrow match needed Match2Mike set for April 9 and April 15 If you’re willing to do a cheek swab and a little bit of paperwork, an area family needs your help in search of a bone marrow match to save the life of their father and brother, and possibly others.

A bone marrow drive will be held on Sunday, April 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Raelyn’s Pub & Eatery, 217 N. State St., Geneseo, and on Saturday, April 15, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Cerno’s Bar and Grill, 213 W. Third St., in Kewanee.

The events are part of the Be The Match donation drive, helping patients with blood cancer. People ages 18-44 are ideal candidates, and people up to age 60 are encouraged to participate.

Those participating will also enjoy free food, cake and beer at both events.

Locally, the event is being sponsored to help Kewanee native Mike Curran, rural Toulon, a farmer in both Neponset Township and Stark County, who is diagnosed with leukemia and in need of a bone marrow transplant. Mike has six siblings, but none of his siblings were a complete match.

Mike is the father of Abbey Curran of Kewanee, Miss Iowa USA 2008, and founder of the non-profit Miss You Can Do It Pageant for young girls and women with special needs. He is also related to the Golby, Barry, and Curran families in Bureau and Henry counties.

PRINCETON — The Martin Family Circus will be the opening act for The Oak Ridge Boys concert on Aug. 24 at the Bureau County Fair.

Just as one might imagine a circus to be — upbeat, unexpected, accomplished and exciting — the Martin Family Circus aims to bring that same joy and a room full of fun with their heartwarming and lively “music that makes you smile!” This self-contained vocal-driven melodic band of two parents and four kids ranging in age from 9-18 packs a punch with their rich stack of family harmonies in a soaring blend, which Rolling Stone magazine calls “exuberant.” Representing four generations of musical heritage, Martin Family Circus delivers soulful family harmony, steeped in traditional roots.

“Our house has always been like a live jukebox, with an all-you-canplay selection of musical instruments,” said Jamie.

“Music completely covers our lives, so our kids have never known a day without it.”

Fueled by a mutual passion for many genres and longing for a fun, family-friendly musical expe-

rience for their kids, Paul and Jamie began singing together in 2010 with their four children: March (now 18), Kell (15), Texas (11), and Tallant (9). Quickly realizing the kids all showed an uncanny knack for hearing harmonies and pitch, as well as for playing instruments, they began performing shows together.

They were soon dubbed the Martin Family Circus by Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill, playfully teasing with them about their growing number of kids and the craziness that goes hand-in-hand with a large family.

“Ours is a real family, and we knew there was an unpredictable nature to

working with our kids. But they were just crazy with passion, truly breathing through the music we were creating,” said Paul. “There was no other answer than for us to do this with them.”

So where did it all begin?

Grammy-winning artist Paul Martin, lead singer/ guitarist of country-pop group Exile, met and married Jamie Allen, daughter of Duane Allen of Country Music Hall of Fame members The Oak Ridge Boys.

Their four children were exposed early to four generations of rich musical heritage, and they watched as each child showed God-given musical talents early on.

Practice soon led to performances around the Nash-

ville area, then appearances on national television shows like The Oak Ridge Boys’ American Legion Christmas special, “The Marty Stuart Show” and “Larry’s Country Diner,” as well as singing the national anthem for the NBA Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls. After a performance of “Elvira” to a packed house for the Oak Ridge Boys’ induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Billboard Magazine heralded them as “singing to the rafters,” getting a crowd of seasoned performers and music industry folks to their feet.

Festival 56 announces Americorps volunteer opportunities

Registration for Carus’ Summer Science Camp begins April 5 PERU — Parents, mark your calendars: April 5 is the day Carus Corporation will begin registering students for their annual Summer Science Camp.

The free camp, which is open to students entering sixth grade in the fall, will take place June 5-9.

This year, St. Bede has agreed to house the camp, with the Academy’s Chemistry Department head, Dan Fitzpatrick, leading as camp director.

Carus is also partnering with the Canal Corridor Association for Camp Day at the canal, where campers will be treated to a science-filled canal boat ride and mule meet and greet.

“Dan’s approach is extremely hands-on, and Canal Day offers a great opportunity for kids to explore and learn,” said Ken Pisarczyk, vice president Carus Technologies. “Last year, campers harvested honey, launched rockets, studied invertebrates,

conducted chemistry experiments, and so much more. We are very pleased to share with our campers these partnerships Carus has formed with St. Bede Academy and the Canal Corridor Association.”

Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day with a graduation ceremony taking place on Friday. Families are invited to celebrate the end of camp with their kids, as each student receives a camp certificate.

Campers are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents who call before 8:30 a.m. will be asked to call back during registration hours.

PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of the Princeton Theatre Group, has three AmeriCorps positions open for the summer 2017 season. The successful applicants will be on site from June 1 through Aug. 6. AmeriCorps volunteers volunteer 300 hours and receive approximately $3,000 separated into a living stipend and a college tuition waver.

Camp 56 will be the primary responsibility for one volunteer, with another volunteer providing limited support.

Camp responsibilities include programming, supervision of campers ages 8–18, paperwork, and communicating with parents and Festival 56 staff.

The other two volunteers will be responsible for multiple educational platforms. They will serve as moderators for three venues: “Meet The Plays,” a panel discussion with directors, technical staff, and genre experts concerning the upcoming season; “Basic Bill,” a 10-minute lesson on the life and times of Shakespeare, including the play “The Comedy of Errors,” to be presented before each of nine performances; and “Opening Night Talkbacks,” five post-performance discussions with the actors, production

staff and directors. Additional duties include backstage education and Dr. Seuss story time for young people as well as general audience education during the New Works Festival, featuring staged readings of 10-minute and one-act plays.

The volunteers will gather specific data throughout the season. This includes a count of patrons for demographic purposes and interviews with play-goers, providing the staff with informed data to drive the future. Each AmeriCorps volunteer will be mentored initially with the goal of becoming independent by the end of the season.
