Field trip to Ag Fair a real education Fourth-graders learn about 14 farming aspects PRINCETON — In an effort to demonstrate to all the fourth-graders in Bureau County the importance of agriculture in their lives, the Bureau County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee held its 24th annual Ag Fair on March 15.

The Ag Fair is a daylong event at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, in which the students make timed stops (nine minutes at each station) at 14 different stations. These stations encompass dairy, embryology, safety, pork, corn, seed science, conservation, beef, soybeans, wheat, technology, equipment, large animals and small animals.

The Farm Bureau Women’s Committee and the Bureau County Ag Coalition Committee originally started Ag Fair. The Ag Coalition Committee consists of a member from each participating Ag Fair station. This committee was originally formed to develop and oversee the goals set for the Ag Fair.

Over time, the Ag Coalition Committee has handed the organizing process over to the Women’s Committee, where the chairperson takes the lead on final decision-making.

The Ag Coalition members then handle the planning of their individual presentations.

Each year the Ag Fair is evaluated. Any considerations for changes come through observation of the event, teachers’ input from evaluation sheets, and suggestions made by volunteers.

The committee begins the planning process about six months in advance of the Ag Fair each year.

The committee works with local businesses, farmers, county commodity groups, U of I Extension, local FS and Soil Water Conservation District, as well as state commodity groups to make presentations at each station. Volunteers are recruited, a total of 75, to serve as presenters, leaders of the classes, time keepers, bus directors, goodie bag distributors and several other jobs including set-up and clean-up workers.

The day prior to the fair, the presenters take time to set up their displays and set-up crews put up tables, chairs and partitions at each station. The day of the fair, coffee,

Following the Ag Fair, each student is given a bag of goodies the committee puts together that contains items donated by each of the presenters, from coloring books to

balloons and pencils. Teachers are given an evaluation that will assist not only the committee, but also the presenters next year. As a follow-up, the committee is sponsoring a thank-you card drive for all the volunteers for the event. Students are encouraged to draw their favor-

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Students from all over Bureau County took part in the Prairie Arts Council’s first-ever creative writing event, Festival of the Written Word, held March 12.

The festival featured writing workshops, a panel discussion on getting published, an open mike session, and a creative writing contest judged by local authors. More than 40 students from seven high schools took part in the event.

PAC board member Kevin Shyne, who is also a published author, was chairman of the event and said the budding authors outdid themselves.

“More than anything else, the goal of the festival was to provide an opportunity for young people in our community to celebrate themselves and each other as creative writers,” he said.

The festival was planned and coordinated with English and language arts teachers at Princeton High School, Hall High School, LaMoille High School, Ohio High School, DePue High School, St. Bede Academy and Bureau Valley High School.

The festival was free of charge to

student participation. The festival was sponsored by the Prairie Arts Council with generous support from Church Women United and the Illinois Arts Council.

PAC President Steve Esme expressed appreciation of its partnerships with these organizations. “The festival exemplifies our shared commitment to a wide range of arts programming,” he said.

Writers were awarded in the categories of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. First-place winner for poetry was Bethanie Quarton, a junior at Ohio High School; runner-up was Alicia Koogler, a junior at St. Bede Academy; and honorable mention went to Paige Blackburn, a sophomore at Hall High School.

First-place winner for fiction was Valeria Hernandez, a senior at DePue High School; runner-up was Magdalena Gavina, a sophomore at DePue High School; and honorable mention went to Paige Wagner, a freshman at Bureau Valley High School.

First-place winner for creative nonfiction was Yusra Khan, a sophomore at St. Bede Academy; runner-up was Dylan Benavidez, a sophomore at Bureau Valley High School and Kamryn Kolb, a freshman at Bureau Valley.

Contestants were given some crazy ingredients and some staples, too, and asked to come up with an appetizer, entree and dessert. That was the premise for Princeton Top Chef Twisted, which took place at the Elks Lodge recently. The contestants, Eric May, Kim Frey and Jason Judd, did their best combining ingredients such as baby food, moonshine, spray cheese, and cocoa powder with items such tortilla shells, steak, spinach, eggs, pancake mix, hash browns, vegetables and seasonings to cook their creations. And if they raised enough money, the contestants were not required to use ingredients such as sauerkraut, cereal and jalapeno rhubarb jam. Judges, armed with remedies for upset stomachs, awarded Judd the top prize, with Frey capturing second and May finishing third. A comedy show followed the Top Chef Twisted contest. MANLIUS — Ladies Night Out 2018 will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manlius.

This event is a night for all women to get out and celebrate spring. It’s a night full of door prizes, silent auction items, exhibitors who give great items to attendees and a complimentary chocolate bar with each ticket purchase. There is also a mashed potato bar full of amazing toppings.

The 10th event has exhibitors with items geared toward men and women.

Ladies Night Out will raffle off an I Robot – Roomba 635 vacuuming robot.

Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

Complimentary golf cart rides are available to chauffeur the ladies.

Tickets are $5, which includes a chance to win a door prize and an opportunity to bid on silent auction items. Those who purchase advance tickets will be entered into a drawing for LNO dollars to be used at any exhibitor display the evening of the event.

Alexandria Collier selected as an Emperor Science Award winner LAMOILLE — Alexandria Collier from LaMoille High School was announced as one of 100 award recipients for the third year of PBS’s and Stand Up To Cancer’s Emperor Science Award program.

The program is designed to empower high school students to become the next generation of scientists as they explore careers in cancer research and care through a unique mentoring opportunity.

Three of the awardees are students receiving support for a second year of mentorship, as allowed by the program.

PBS and Stand Up To Cancer, a division of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, received nearly 600 applications from eligible 10thand 11th-grade students in 28 states

throughout the U.S. who are interested in pursuing a career in science research. Prominent scientists served as judges and evaluated the students’ applications: written essays Alexandria submitted online this Collier fall, addressing how cancer has affected them or their communities; how science can help find a cure for cancer; and, if they are able to become cancer researchers, what scientific fields would they study and why.

“LaMoille High School is proud to recognize Alexandria Collier as an Emperor Science Award recipient. Alexandria was chosen from a pool of hundreds of 10th- and

11th-grade students from across the country that are interested in pursuing a career in science and cancer research,” said Nicole Cromwell, science instructor at LaMoille High School. “Alexandria will represent LaMoille High School and the entire Illinois Valley community as she continues to enhance her knowledge and skills through this one-of-a-kind mentorship program.”

The 100 Emperor Science Award recipients will work with an esteemed university scientist on a rewarding multi-week cancer research project, receive a Google Chromebook computer to enhance their studies and to facilitate mentor access for those students who live at a distance from their mentor’s research facility, and a $1,500

stipend for expenses.

Students from rural, suburban and urban communities in 28 states comprise the third class of Emperor Science Awardees. These students demonstrated awareness of emerging developments in cancer treatment, including precision medicine, immunotherapy and epigenetics, and have an impressive range of research focuses and interests, including nanotechnology and engineering, basic cellular biology, gene mapping, bioinformatics, DNA splicing and computational sciences.

Collier is the daughter of Jeannette Wheeler Collier and the granddaughter of Rich and Carol Wheeler.

Her dream is to go to college and study genetic engineering and stem cell biology.

PRINCETON — Celebrated annually in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, Women’s History Month highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Throughout March, the Princeton Public Library will present programs, films and a special art display featuring local and national contributions by women.

Thursday, March 29, 6:30 p.m., Remember Indian Creek: A presentation by author Heinz-Dietrich Suppan, who tells the story of several settlers who were looking to start a new life along Indian Creek in the 1800s. Suppan spent more than two years researching the material and visited with a descendant of two sisters who were the only survivors of the Indian Creek Massacre. The book includes maps and photographs from the era, plus modern day photographs that show artifacts. A bibliography of sources should prove useful for those wanting to do their own research.

“Remember Indian Creek” will be sold after the presentation. Suppan has taught German and history classes at a variety of schools. He currently teaches at Marquette Academy and Joliet Junior College and lives with his wife, Leslie, in Ottawa.

SPRING VALLEY — Mark the calendar for a Rules of the Road review course at the library on Friday, April 6 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program is free and can help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal exam. The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations, and also provides information on the vision screening. Call the library at 815-663-4741 to register or stop by the

library at 215 E. Cleveland St. Lego Play is a new program for children ages 8-16 to create masterpieces with Legos. Legos will be provided by the library. Any child under 7 must be accompanied by an adult and will be given Duplo blocks to build with during the program, if they so desire. Please do not bring in any Legos to the program, respect the creativity of others, leave the Legos at the library, and have fun. This free program will be held once a month the third Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The library in Spring Valley is also collecting aluminum cans with the proceeds supporting the library and local Scouts. Cans may be dropped off at the library during its hours of operation. The Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library Board of Trustees will hold meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. in the meeting room at the library.

WYANET — The R.A. Sapp Library’s computer classes, normally held on the first and third Thursdays at 6 p.m., will be on hiatus until further notice because of a conflict in time.

The library has been hosting a class on self-publishing, books, poetry, etc., on the second Tuesday each month at 1 p.m. So all aspiring authors and poets, come on out and see how to get those books out to the adoring public.

OHIO — The Ohio Public Library will host its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 24, 10 a.m., in the library. After all the eggs are found, there will be treats and some craft activities.

BUDA — The library is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday; 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; closed Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered

Rumble for the Kids PRINCETON — The Rumble for the Kids professional charity event to benefit Princeton Elementary Schools will be Saturday, April 21, at Logan Junior High School.

Hunter safety course PUTNAM — Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at a Department of Natural Resources hunter safety course on Saturday, April 7, and Sunday, April 8, at the Putnam County Conservation District, Senachwine Unit, 5769 Lake Road, Putnam. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

A 1996 state law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter education course before

they can receive their first hunting license. Participants completing the course receive a Hunter Education Certification card verifying that they have passed the course of instruction. Participants should provide their Social Security number at the time of the class.

The minimum 10-hour course includes instruction in wildlife management, firearms safety, hunter ethnics, game identification, first aid, survival techniques and regulations.

Fishing tourney comes to Spring Valley this weekend SPRING VALLEY — Walleye anglers from all walks of life are invited to join the fun and compete for lucrative cash prizes when the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit kicks off its 2018 tournament season on the Illinois River in Spring Valley.

Set for March 23-24 out of the Spring Valley Boat Club and presented by Lowe Equipment Attachments, the two-day, team-format event is a traditional rite of spring for anglers from across the Midwest, who converge on the river to enjoy its world-class fishing while battling for their share of the MWC’s generous payout.

Circuit veteran Tommy Skarlis, who fished his first MWC Spring Valley season opener back in 1993, helps explain the event’s allure.

“I love this tournament for a number of reasons,” he said. “It’s a chance to enjoy the best sauger bite you’ve ever experienced, and

the river’s ever-changing playing field makes it exciting for anglers and fans alike, because everyone’s in it until the last minute. Plus, it’s like a big family reunion, reconnecting with old friends and welcoming first-timers to the MWC.” The Illinois River is widely considered one of the continent’s top sauger fisheries and produces sag-bellied walleyes as well. Such exceptional multi-species potential is often reflected in the final standings. In 2017, for example, Iowans Marty Berns and Maury Schmerbach rallied to win the MWC Spring Valley tournament with a 33-pound, 15-ounce total weight anchored by an 8-pound, 9-ounce walleye that ended up being big fish of the event.

They also had another kicker that pushed the scale to 7½ pounds.

Walleyes, saugers and saugeyes 14 inches and over will all be fair game for anglers competing in the tournament. Teams will be allowed to bring

their best five fish to the scale each day, and the team with the highest two-day total weight will be crowned the Illinois River champions.

“If you can put a limit of saugers in the livewell each day and pick up a bonus walleye or two, you have a great shot at the top 10,” Skarlis said. “Just be sure to save your honey hole for day two so you can finish strong.”

Besides enjoying great walleye fishing and the thrill of competition, teams vie for hefty payouts, which are based on the number of teams entered in each event and paid to the top 20 percent of the field. In addition, the big-fish pot, option pot payouts and sponsor bonuses including Ranger Cup, Lowrance Electronics, Okuma, AirWave and T-H Marine Atlas Awards add thousands more to the total.

Winners routinely pocket $10,000 to $15,000 or more in cash and prizes.

Plus, the top team also wins a $1,000

Cabela’s National Team Championship Prize Package including paid NTC entry, travel stipend, team jerseys and plaques.

As an extra incentive for teams to show up and fish hard, the final 10 invitations to fish the 2018 Cabela’s NTC May 16-19 at the Quad Cities out of Moline, will be awarded to the top 10 teams at Spring Valley who are not already qualified for the 2018 NTC. Teams fishing three or more tournaments also compete for coveted berths in the championship, which is comprised of the top point-accumulating teams from the previous year’s season and offers payouts based on the previous year’s participation. Teams that qualify in 2018 will fish the 2019 championship, set for Oct. 3-5, 2019, on Wisconsin’s incomparable Lake Winnebago System.

Jonathan Byrd at the Princeton Coffeehouse on March 24 PRINCETON — North Carolina singer-songwriter Jonathan Byrd will perform at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24.

Touring as Jonathan Byrd & the Pickup Cowboy, Byrd (guitar and vocals) will be accompanied by Johnny Waken (guitar and mandolin) and Kyshona Armstrong (bassist). Byrd draws in audiences in with a wide range of songs, from heartbreaking ballads to heart-lifting sing-alongs. He has been called “a folk singer with the heart of a rock ‘n’ roll band” (K. Oliver in Free Times).

Between musical tours, Byrd can frequently be heard back home in North Carolina performing old-time music at The Kraken, a Chapel Hill bar located in a 1973 roadhouse venue. He also hosts a weekly residency series there, inviting performers from around the country to share their music.

In his songwriting, Byrd is known for literary, outsider songs that have become campfire favorites.

A preacher’s son and a Gulf War veteran, he is also a poet. “You’ve Changed” is the title of his new book of poetry.
