Stitch by stitch Quilt show is this weekend PRINCETON — The Covered Bridge Quilters Guild Bi-Annual Show will kick off this weekend at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 21, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday, March 22.

There will be more than 200 quilts shown and judged.

Janet Moreland of Malden (pictured) has been selected to be the featured quilter at this year’s show.

Moreland has been with the Covered Bridge Quilters Guild since it began in the ‘70s. Her earliest memory of quilting is playing under the quilting frame at Grandma Palmer’s church during their ladies aid meetings.

This Week Robert Girardi will present Abraham Lincoln’s Doctor’s Dog at 6 p.m.

Thursday, March 19, at the Lock 16 Center in LaSalle. This is a random and irreverent look at some of the bizarre, ludicrous and outrageous events that took place during the turbulent Civil War years. The Canal Corridor Association’s Dinner and a Little History series offers guests a delicious meal, a chance to meet with fellow history buffs and a detailed and interesting presentation. The cost is $24 for CCA members and $29 for non-members.

Putnam County High School will present Disney’s “High School Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, Friday, March 20, and at 2 p.m.

A bluegrass, gospel and country music jam will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

Open Prairie Church, 25 E. Marion St., Princeton, will host a March Madness event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 21.

There will be a flea market featuring antique radios, books, dishes, silver, furniture, shoes, jewelry, art, imported items, repurposed keys and bottles, kid’s clothes and more.

There will be raffles and a taco bar by Rich Hornbakers for $4 per taco.

The Bureau County United Way Spring Event will be Saturday, March 21, in the lower level of Fitzgerald’s in Princeton.

The LaSalle County Genealogy Guild will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Guild Library, 115 W. Glover St. Stephen Szabodos will present his program, genealogy research-beyond basics.

He will teach techniques to overcome problems with surname spelling, learn to search in the correct location and review cases which while help unlock early census records.

Richmond Hill Players will hold auditions for three summer productions of there 2015 season from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22, at the Richmond Hill Barn Theatre in Geneseo.

Starved Rock Visitors Center will host a program on explorer Rene-Robert Cavalier Sieur de LaSalle at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 22. Mark Walczynski, local author and Starved Rock historian, will examine the role of the French explorer and how his vision of a French commercial empire in the 17th century is still active today.

The presentation will feature a selection of songs performed with the narrative. The area has had a barbershop chorus for a long time with only a few years when it was not functioning.

The Malden Vets Club will hold a men’s nite wild game stag at 5 p.m.

The bunny will be at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie to welcome spring with a celebration hosted by Bethany Baptist Church and the Shoppes at Grand Prairie from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28. Monday, March 23, the Monday Night Movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a Chicago playwright who uses self-hypnosis to find the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.

Tuesday, March 24, preschool story time and craft will be at 10:30 a.m. The theme is Easter and lambs. Also, a concert by the Covered Bridge Barber Shop Choir will be at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, March 26, a program on women artists from the late Renaissance through the 20th century will be presented at 6:30 p.m. by Dana Collins.

SPRING VALLEY — Friday, April 10, Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library, is offering a Rules of the Road Review course for all citizens in the Illinois Valley area. The course is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is a free program and the purpose of the

course is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination. The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations and also provides information on the vision screening.

Story times feature a variety of activities including stories, songs, crafts and much more.

PERU — Thursday, March 26, the Peru Public Library will host historian Jim Gibbons, who will tell the story of the Chicago school fire that happened on Dec. 1, 1958, which claimed the lives of 92 students and three nuns. It was the third largest fire in Chicago history and the third largest school fire in the U.S. The program begins at 6 p.m. in the library’s main reading area.

During his presentation, Gibbons will also discuss the life and death of Margaret (Peggy) Anne Sansonetti, who was killed that day by smoke inhalation in the fire at age 10.

MAGNOLIA — Magnolia Branch Library will have

Chicken has so many ways to prepare is, so you can come up with a meal that almost anybody will like.

Crispy Chicken Fingers 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup dry bread crumbs 2 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 egg 1 cup buttermilk 1 3/4 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into strips Fat for deep fat frying In a large resalable plastic bag, combine the first six ingredients. In a shallow bowl, whisk egg and buttermilk. Dip a few pieces of chicken at a time in buttermilk mixture, then place in bag; seal and shake to coat. In an electric skillet, heat oil to 375°. Fry chicken, a few strips at a time for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer reads 170°. Drain on paper towels. Serves 7.

French’s Crunchy Onion Chicken 1 1/3 cups French’s french fried onions 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 egg, beaten Crush french fried onions in plastic bag. Dip chicken into egg, then coat in onion crumbs. Bake 20 minutes at 400° until cooked through.

Skillet Chicken Pot Pie Chicken Pie Filling 1/3 cup butter 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups chicken broth 1 1/2 cups milk 1 1/2 teaspoons Creole seasoning 2 tablespoons butter 1 large sweet onion, diced 1 8-ounce package sliced fresh mushrooms 4 cups shredded cooked chicken 2 cups frozen cubed hash browns 1 cup matchstick carrots 1 cup frozen small sweet peas 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley Pastry Crust 1 14.1-ounce package refrigerated pie crusts 1 egg white To prepare filling: Preheat oven to 350°.

Melt 1/3 cup butter in a large saucepan over medium heat; add all-purpose flour and cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute.

cook, whisking constantly, 6 to 7 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat and stir in Creole seasoning.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large Dutch oven over medium high heat; add onion and mushrooms and sauté 10 minutes or until tender. Stir in chicken, next 4 ingredients and sauce. To prepare crust: Place 1 pie crust in a lightly greased 10-inch cast iron skillet. Spoon chicken mixture over pie crust and top with remaining pie crust.

Whisk egg white until foamy; brush top of pie crust with egg white. Cut 4 to 5 slits in top of pie for steam to escape. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 5 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.

Country Chicken with Gravy 3/4 cup crushed corn flakes 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons fat free evaporated milk 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (4 ounces each) 2 teaspoons canola oil Gravy 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup fat free evaporated milk 1/4 cup condensed chicken broth, undiluted 1 teaspoon condensed chicken broth 2 tablespoons minced chives In a shallow bowl, combine the first 6 ingredients. Place milk in another shallow bowl. Dip chicken in milk, and then roll in cornflake mixture. In a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray, cook chicken in oil over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes on each side or until meat thermometer reads 170°. Meanwhile in a small saucepan, melt butter; stir in the flour, pepper and salt until smooth.

Gradually stir in the milk, broth and 1 teaspoon chicken broth. Bring to a boil, cook and stir for 1 to 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in chives. Serve with chicken.

IVCC Jazz Ensemble will present concert Guest artist will be David Hoffman OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Jazz Ensemble will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, with guest artist David Hoffman.

A former performer and resident of Springfield, Hoffman went on to become the trumpet and flugelhorn soloist as well as a composer and arranger for the Ray Charles Orchestra. During his stint with Charles, he played extensively in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia, including Charles’ first trip to Russia in 1994 and the return visit

in 2000, where he played with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl.

Hoffman has appeared on television in France, Italy, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Holland, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Japan, Argentina and Brazil. PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Booster Club will be hosting a drawdown at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, (immediately after the PHS alumni basketball game) in the basement of Fitzgerald’s. A chicken and spaghetti dinner will be available.

Tickets are being sold for $50 a couple.

MWC returns to Valley

SPRING VALLEY — One of competitive walleye fishing’s oldest rites of spring continues March 20-21 as the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit returns to the Illinois River for a qualifying tournament at Spring Valley.

The tournament offers winter-weary walleye and sauger fans the chance to compete for thousands of dollars in cash and prizes in a professionally-run team format. Part of an expanded lineup of A-list destinations for the 2015 season, the event also is timed to allow competitors to enjoy great fishing.

Long a must-fish destination for serious sauger junkies, the Illinois produces fish on a variety of patterns, including jigging or trolling channel edges and other structural sweet spots.

Scott Rhodes and Jeff Koester won the 2014 Cabela’s MWC tournament with a 10-fish limit weighing 26 pounds, 4 ounces, caught by hand-lining crankbaits laced with walleye-formula Berk-

ley PowerBait Attractant.

New for the Cabela’s MWC Illinois River event, inspections and weigh-ins will be held at the Spring Valley Boat Club. Take-off is 7 a.m. and weigh-ins begin at 3 p.m.

As a bonus to budding tournament fans, the Cabela’s MWC, National Professional Anglers Association, Pure Fishing and Zippo Outdoor Brands will present a youth and family fishing clinic immediately after the dayone weigh-in. The first 50 youths will receive rods and reel combos courtesy of the NPAA.

Illinois River Walleye Classic

SPRING VALLEY — The weekend of March 28-29, the Spring Valley Walleye Club will host the first annual Illinois River Walleye Classic.

Come join in the fun in the first ever spring event in SVWC history. The club and their volunteers have a long time history and experience in the operation of a successful event.

Entry fee is $400 per team. Based on a full field of 100 teams the payout will be as follows: first place - $12,000; second place - $6,000; third place $3,000; and 4th-10th will also receive a paycheck.

Ten percent of the field-All proceeds will benefit the Illinois River Stocking Project.
