The event is set from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday March 17; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 17; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, March 19. Saturday is also Bag Day, where event-goers can buy a bag of books for $5, specially-marked books are half price.

The sale is held in the Princeton Public Library Friends Sale Room at the library at 698 E. Peru St. in Princeton.

This year, the Friends are proud to announce there will be upwards of 10,000 used books, both hardcover and paperback, offered for sale. All books have been cleaned and sorted into more than 30 categories for easy shopping. To date, they currently have best sellers, cookbooks, mysteries, children’s books, history and science book, plus puzzles, DVDs and CDs. Event-goers should enter through the front of the library and follow the signs to the sale.

New ‘Canal Crossover’ links Heritage Harbor Ottawa Resort to I&M Canal Trail OTTAWA — Heritage Harbor Ottawa Resort, a marina resort community in Illinois’ Starved Rock Country, has announced the addition of a new direct access point between the Illinois and Michigan Canal Trail and the resort’s main entrance on Canal Road (County Road 51) in Ottawa.

Dubbed the “Canal Crossover,” the access point is located on a section of the I&M Canal Trail running east-west between Marseilles and downtown Ottawa.

Through collaboration between the city of Ottawa and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, an agreement was developed to allow this safe and convenient access point.

“The I&M Canal Trail is a wonderful amenity appreciated by everyone who lives in or visits Starved Rock Country, and we are fortunate to have it nearby running directly parallel to Heritage Harbor,” said Tom Heimsoth, partner and developer of Heritage Harbor Ottawa Resort. “Until now, even though we could see the trail just across Canal Road, the nearest access was nearly a mile away. With the new Canal Crossover, our residents and guests can more easily reach the trail, plus bikers, walkers and snowmobilers using the trail from surround-

ing areas can safely cross Canal Road to reach our waterfront restaurant at Heritage Harbor, The Red Dog Grill and all the amenities available in the resort.”

The I&M Canal Trail was originally the towpath for the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which opened in 1848 and connected Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River to complete the first water route between the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Closed to transportation operations in 1933 following the completion of the Illinois Waterway, the I&M Canal has since been redeveloped for recreational use, including the conversion of the towpath to a multi-purpose trail for hiking, bicycling and snowmobiling.

Today, the I&M Canal Trail runs 61.5 miles between Rockdale and LaSalle, connecting towns such as Utica, Ottawa, Seneca and Morris, and providing access to state parks and historic sites along the route as well as other nearby multipurpose trails including the Rock Run Greenway Trail and the Joliet Junction Trail.

LaSalle County will be adding a painted pedestrian crosswalk across Canal Road between the Canal Crossover and the Heritage Harbor Ottawa entrance, along with signs 500 feet prior to the crossing on both sides

of Canal Road to alert automotive traffic. Additionally, way-finding signage will be placed along the I&M Canal Trail indicating the new access point.

Helping make the Canal Crossover project possible as an improvement and extension of the trail system were city of Ottawa officials, including Ottawa City Commissioner Dan Aussem, as well as Larry Kinzer, county engineer, who managed necessary road improvements to Canal Road. Heritage Harbor Ottawa Resort contributed equipment, manpower and materials for the construction of the crossover, while Widman Excavating provided machinery. Members of Laborers’ Local 393 and Operating Engineers Local 150 also provided labor to perform the work.

“There was tremendous support for this project, which goes to show how proud this community is of the recreational opportunities that make this region unique,” said Heimsoth. “We’re happy to have played a part in enhancing a great tourism feature for Starved Rock Country.”

Gateway Services celebrates National Developmental Disability Awareness Month PRINCETON — Since 1987, the month of March has been recognized as National Developmental Disability Awareness Month.

This month, Gateway Services encourages members of the community to celebrate the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

“For many of these people with developmental disabilities there is now the prospect of a brighter future and greater opportunity.

Americans are becoming increasingly aware that such disabilities need not

keep individuals from realizing their full potential in school, at work or at home, as members of their families and of their communities,” as stated by the presidential proclamation in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan.

“Our employees empower our individuals on a daily basis to reach goals to remain as independent as possible, and to be included in the community and our individuals strive to enrich the community by being participating members in local churches and services groups, volunteer-

ing for community activities, and working locally,” said Jeff Dean, president and CEO of Gateway Services.

Agencies like Gateway Services, and the ARC of Illinois and the United States, say celebrating the achievements of those with developmental disabilities is as simple as starting a conversation, making support visible on social media channels, and recognizing those who support people with developmental disabilities.

Ottawa Art League donates art books OTTAWA — The Ottawa Art League showed its appreciation to schools that helped students enter the Town & Country Youth Art Show held in April 2015 by donating an art book to each of the schools.

Darlene Spelich, a long-time member of the League, suggested the idea as a way for the organization to connect with young artists in the area. The League’s Board approved the suggestion as a way to thank the teachers and schools that bring the art experience to their students and help them participate in the annual show sponsored by the Ottawa Art League.

Darlene and Reanna Pelszynski, the show’s chairman, delivered the books to the schools in February. The Ottawa Art League Board chose “The Art Book for Children” for the elementary and middle schools and “200 Projects

to Strengthen Your Art Skills” for the high schools. The schools and teachers receiving the books were Chris Hankins at Morris Community High School, Miranda Zahn at Serena High School, Paula Carroll at Ottawa Township High School, Karen Klopcic at Hall High School, Kim Nettleingham at Ransom Elementary, Julie Jenkins at Peru Parkside and Karen Fleming at Milton Pope Elementary in Marseilles.

This year’s Town & Country Youth Show will be April 16, again sponsored by the Ottawa Art League. All middle school and high school age students are eligible to participate and can find an entry form on the League’s website at ottawaartleague. org. Every year 11 monetary awards are given to students. The purpose of the show is to give young artists an opportunity to show their work in public.

AmeriCorps volunteer positions with Festival 56 are available PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the Education Committee of the Princeton Theatre Group, has two AmeriCorps positions open for its summer 2016 season.

Applicants must be 18 or older with a high school diploma and be available from June 1 to July 31. AmeriCorps volunteers work 300 hours and receive approximately $3,000 each, separated into a living stipend and a college tuition waiver.

Camp 56, a theatre day camp for children ages 8–18, will be the primary responsibility for one volunteer, with the other providing limited support. Camp responsibilities include programming, supervision, paperwork, and communicating with parents and Festival 56 staff.

The second volunteer will be responsible for multiple educational platforms. He or she will serve as moderator for three venues: “Meet the Plays,” a panel discussion of directors, technical staff and genre experts concerning the upcoming season; “Basic Bill,” a 15-minute lesson on the life and times of Shakespeare, to be presented

before each of nine performances of “The Winter’s Tale”; and “Opening Night Talkbacks,” post-performance discussions with the actors and directors.

The volunteers will also be responsible for gathering specific data throughout the season. This includes a count of patrons for demographic purposes as well as interviews with play-goers, providing the staff with informed data to drive the future.

A returning series of workshops (stage combat/improvisation) will require the volunteers to assist the workshop leaders. Educating the audience during our “New Works Festival,” staged readings of one-act plays, is included in the volunteer hours. Each AmeriCorps volunteer will be mentored initially with the goal of becoming independent by the end of the season.

You can’t go back and erase the past, as much as you might try. You can alter its affects, make excuses for it, or pretend it never happened, but what’s done is done. And as you’ll see in the new book “When Hitler Took Cocaine and Lenin Lost His Brain” by Giles Milton, more was done than you think.

Every good historian knows history’s filled with dates, battles and facts that can be mind-numbing for the average person. Those are things your high school history teacher tried to make you memorize — but there’s a lot that textbooks never tell.

Did you know, for instance, that Adolph Hitler might’ve had a love child that would “quite possibly still” be alive? Or that Hitler’s brother joined the U.S. Army in World War II and fought against the Germans?

There are things in history that we know, almost. A corpse’s clues suggest how explorer George Mallory died, but nobody knows if he made it to the top of Everest. After the Titanic sank, a kitchen worker survived hours in icy water, perhaps due to the two bottles of whiskey he drank earlier. I enjoyed this book with the consternation that comes when you know something’s going to end, but you don’t want it to — and that’s the feeling I think you’ll get, too, when you read “When Hitler Took Cocaine and Lenin Lost His Brain.” Start this book, and you’ll want more when it’s done.

Easter egg hunts announced

‘I on Diabetes’ classes in Princeton announced

SHEFFIELD — The Easter Bunny will make a stop at the Sheffield Homecoming Park at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26. Groups will be set up for: 3 and under, 4 to 5 year olds, first and second grades, and third and fourth grades. A special prize will be given in each group to the one who finds the “golden egg.”

The event is sponsored by Sheffield Lions Club and St. Patrick’s Knights of Columbus.

MALDEN — The Malden eighth-grade cheerleading squad will host an Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, on the lawn area behind the school. Any child age 9 months to fourth grade is welcome. Prizes will be awarded. Everyone will find eggs and receive a goodie bag. In case of rain, the egg hunt will be in the school.

Illinois state 4-H robotics competition set for April 23 URBANA — Participants can see what 4-H robotics is all about, tour the University of Illinois campus and meet lots of new people. Several departments on campus will have hands-on displays throughout the event.

Princeton Police to host Citizens Police Academy PRINCETON — Want to learn more about how the Princeton Police Department operates?

On Tuesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m., the Princeton Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy will again be open to Princeton residents 21 years of age or older.

The class will meet every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for a 10-week course. The curriculum has been designed to be informative as well as beneficial, and will be presented in a manner that is enjoyable for everyone who attends.

Participants will learn different aspects of the police department, including a tour of the police station, a K9 demonstration, criminal justice systems, community policing, crime scene techniques, policing challenges facing the city, ride along with a uniformed officer and much more.

The instructors of the academy are Princeton Police Officers and other members of the criminal justice system. The goal of the academy is to nurture a growing pool of responsible, well-informed citizens with the potential to influence public opinion about police practices and services.

The class size will be limited to 20 students.

The police department asks interested residents to turn applications in as soon as possible, as the classes fill up quickly and so the police department can get the necessary materials needed for the classes. Applications are available at the police department.

PRINCETON — This year’s Rumble For The Kids will be April 30 at Logan Junior High School’s Pannebaker Gymnasium. Doors will open at 4 p.m. with a 5 p.m. bell time, east entrance.

Rumble For The Kids is an annual wrestling event that helps raise money for non-profit organizations that assist in helping local kids.

Shooting Camp

PERU — St. Bede Academy will host a Breakthrough Basketball Shooting Camp June 17-19.

Camp sessions are: fifth to eighth grade will meet from 9 a.m. to noon and ninth through 12th grade from 1 to 4 p.m. June 17, June 18 and June 19 at St. Bede .

Campers will receive instruction on the foundation of shooting, how to shoot off the dribble, shoot off the catch and advanced shooting technique used by the pros.

There is limited availability as each session is limited to 36 players to ensure a high number of repetitions and improvement.

SPRING VALLEY — The 30th annual Lori’s Walleye Run will start at 9 a.m.
