Be informed The Bureau County Republican will host two forums to help voters cast their ballots in the April 4 consolidated election.

At 6 p.m. on March 22, the BCR will conduct a forum for candidates for the Princeton Park District. There are six candidates running for two seats on the board. This forum will be at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton Following the park board forum, Princeton Elementary School District Superintendent Tim Smith will speak to the crowd about the upcoming PES referendum on the ballot.

The evening will close with a candidate forum for the five candidates running for two seats on the Princeton City Council.

At 7 p.m. on March 23, the BCR will host an informational forum for Bureau Valley School District residents. Each Bureau Valley Board member will be give five minutes to talk about the upcoming referendum, which will build a new school in Sheffield and make improvements at Bureau Valley North in Walnut and Bureau Valley High School. This forum will be held at Bureau Valley High School auditorium.

As always, no questions will be taken from the crowd during the events. The forums are not debates, rather a time for voters to gather information about the candidates, referendum. School board members and candidates will be available after the event to personally answer any questions.

HENRY — While many fly drones as an enjoyable pasttime, Joe Stanbary has seen a way to turn his hobby into a profession. Having earned his Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) license in December, he’s now ready to venture high into the sky to capture the view from above for his clients.

Stanbary, an 11 year veteran of the postal service, said, “It all started as a hobby; but I realized there’s a market for this, and it’s an amazing opportunity for me to begin doing something I love.”

Flying drones or, as the FAA refers to them — unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), doesn’t require licensing if flown for recreation, but if used commercially, the pilot must pass an aeronautical knowledge test. Once the pilot receives their Remote Pilot Airman certificate and passes vetting from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), they are allowed to use their drones professionally.

“It was difficult. There’s more to it than you’d think, and there was lots of studying involved before going to Bloomington for the test. I had to learn how to read aeronautical charts and know all the requirements and limitations of what’s allowed.” Stanbary said.

Now that the testing, licensing and insurance requirements have been completed, his next challenge is to build his portfolio with the DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone and show others the possibilities of an aerial viewpoint.

“It’s changing perceptions. There’s so much drones can do and they’re a wonderful tool. As long as it’s safe, I’m always open to new ideas,” he said.

One idea Stanbary is hoping will take flight is to photograph and record the motocross races at Walnut’s Sunset Ridge.

“I love the freedom of flying and of being able to go where others can’t,” he said. “It’s fun to see people’s reactions when they view something from a new perspective.”

The library also added new music CDs, including “The Breaker” by Little Big Town, “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth” by Sturgill Simpson and the compilation set “Wow Hits 2017.”

WYANET — The Raymond A. Sapp Library’s computer classes continue through May on the second Tuesday of each

month.

The library’s book group has been meeting for 17.5 years. The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month.

They also celebrate member’s birthdays with a quarterly lunch. The book the group will be discussing in March is “Emma and Me” by Elizabeth Flock. If you love reading, and would like a lively discussion of literature, come join the fun.

The library has books available for the March discussion. Stop in and grab one to read, and then join the group at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the library.

SPRING VALLEY — The children’s library has story time on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

During this time, children are able to read stories, given a craft to put together and are served refreshments.

The library board of trustees holds its meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 4

p.m. in the library meeting room.

LADD — Tuesdays at 10 a.m., the library holds pre-school story times, which include stories, crafts, songs and snacks.

Children from age 2 to 5 are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian.

WALNUT — The library will be hosting an art and craft fair on Saturday, April 8, to coincide with the vendor fair being held at the Walnut Community Center. Anyone who has a craft they’d like to sell or artists looking to sell their work should contact library Director Michele McAlvey at 815379-2159.

The library is also asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

LAMOILLE — The library has received many great new reads for adults, teens and children of all ages. New videos have also made their way to the library. No need to pay for a movie rental when you can pick them up free at the library with a valid library card.

Therapy Thursdays is ongoing at the library.

Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

DEPUE — On the sec-

ond Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — Tuesday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m., the library will host a smart phone training and safety class in the community room. Illinois Valley Cellular will present the program that will allow users to get to know their smart phone, how to connect to Wi-Fi, basic set-up and overview of the phone, how to use email, voicemail set-up and usage, how to find apps and download, what certain buttons are for and other fun tips and tricks.

Call the library at 815646-4511 to register so the librarian can plan accordingly. Patrons do not need to be an Illinois Valley Cellular customer to attend this program.

On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public

Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday Flix is back at Peru Library on March 24, with a musical double feature. Our first movie is set in a 1950s high school; the other showcases a 1960s American bandstand program. The first movie begins at 5:30 p.m. and after a short intermission, the second movie begins at 7:40 p.m.

Patrons are encouraged to bring non-alcoholic beverages and snacks to enjoy with the movies. Other library services are not available during Friday Flix. Check the library’s event calendar online or call with questions.

Tanzania native to speak at Princeton library, Prouty Building PRINCETON — On March 24, from 3 to 5 p.m., the Princeton Public Library will host Tanzanian native Donatus Gadiye, who will speak on the measures Africa is taking to protect the imperiled animals from poaching and habitat destruction. He will also speak on the National Parks in Tanzania and safari opportunities.

Gadiye will also be speaking at the Prouty Building on the same evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Gadiye is dedicated to the protection and propagation of his country’s greatest natural resources — wildlife.

When Gadiye was 7 years old, his grandmother gave him three chickens. Both she and his mother encouraged and supported his desire to attend Tanzanian primary school, which is a free first- through seventh-grade program. Gadiye’s father, a farmer, saw no great advantage to education, but he gave in to his wife and son’s desires.

Few Tanzanian children continue through seventh grade. Responsibilities at home or even early marriages for the girls take them away from classes. Gadiye loved school, and his teachers wanted him to continue to secondary school, however that cost money and required him being sent from home. His father said, no, but Gadiye won over his father’s wishes again.

Two Irish Tellers’ return to Princeton for an encore performance PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has announced the return of the “Two Irish Tellers.”

Local story tellers Mick Henneberry of Princeton and Tricia Kelly of Peru return for an encore performance as the “Two Irish Tellers” at 7 p.m. Friday, March 17. They will perform in the tradition of Irish storytelling with jokes, Irish folklore and a bit of music. Be prepared for an evening of shenanigans and a performance filled with a “bit o’truth and a whole lot o’blarney”.

Reservations are suggested but not required. Well known throughout the Illinois Valley area, Henneberry and Kelly have traveled from Colorado to Massachusetts to Tennessee telling stories and performing as professional story tellers for the past 10 years; each one working as individual story tellers, and on occasion, teaming up to perform as duo story tellers for a particular theme or festival.

Kelly says that not only does the program include a bit of jokes, limericks and stories, but a touch of Irish history, folklore and music, as well. Since 2013 the “Two Irish Tellers” have performed several times at other venues across Illinois and continually add more tales and interesting facts to the program. Both tellers come from Irish backgrounds so it’s quite natural for them to carry on the tradition of Irish storytelling.

grandmother had given him became an industry. And Gadiye was able to earn his own tuition through those chickens to go on to secondary school, which included Grades 8 through 12.

Upon graduation from secondary school, Gadiye earned a scholarship to the university, and there he earned a degree in animal science.

Gadiye went to work as a warden and conservation agent for the Ngorongoro Crater, an area boasting the highest concentration of wildlife on the planet.

A few years of dedicated service prompted a sponsored trip back to school where he emerged with a master’s degree in Natural Resource Management.

He currently monitors the protection of black rhinos on the Crater floor and is coordinator for monitoring the Crater’s elephant population Gadiye is now determined to pay back for his gifts that brought him to the position he enjoys today. He is involved in schools and orphanages near his hometown of Arusha. And yes, he still owns chickens.

PRINCETON — The Friends of the Princeton Public Library will host their annual spring book sale soon.

For more than 35 years, the Friends have collected, cleaned and sorted donated books and prepared them for sale to the public. They offer all genre of books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles. The usual prices of the books are $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks. They do offer some special priced books and recent titles may be marked up.

The items are displayed in the sale room at the rear of the Princeton Public Library. All are sorted into easily accessed sections and titles are added as they are donated. They offer convenient shopping hours and offer a “Bag Day” on Saturday of the sale for patrons to fill a bag of books for $5.

This year’s spring sale hours are as follows: • Wednesday, March 15 — 4 to 7 p.m., open to Friends members only.

• Thursday, March 16 — 10 a.m. to 8 p;.m.

• Friday, March 17 — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Family Video seeks donations for lymphoma research PRINCETON — Family Video in Princeton, 20 W. Century Drive, is participating in a campaign called Round it Up where customers are asked to round up their purchase amount. All donations will be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Since 2012, when the Round It Up campaign was first created, 14 new lymphoma treatment drugs and 63 research grants have been approved, thanks to the $6 million that was raised from customers choosing to round up their total amount to the next dollar at check out.

The campaign runs from March 10-26.

“Lymphoma has struck the lives of far too many families, including many of those in the Highland Ventures, Ltd. family. We are dedicated to continuing our support of the incredible

research at the Biobank and excited to help advance the mission of LRF,” said Keith Hoogland, president of Highland Ventures, the parent company of Family Video. “Together, our entire organization and our friends and customers around the nation make this a winning effort every year. Starved Rock Country Community Foundation to award $5,000 scholarship in April Through the generosity of local donors who care deeply about the advanced education of local youth, the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation is pleased to award a $5,000 scholarship in April 2017.

The Carol and Dick Janko Scholarship was created specifically for recent and upcoming high school graduates who are enrolled in an accredited university or college for the fall 2017 semester, and who can demonstrate recent studies or work -elated activities focused on entrepreneurship. The scholarship reflects the Janko’s lifelong commitment to youth, education, economic development

Shall the maximum rate for the education fund of Princeton Elementary School District No. 115, Bureau and Putnam Counties, Illinois, be increased to 2.1% of the full, fair cash value of all taxable property of said District as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue of Illinois for such purposes for Tax Levy year 2017 (to be extended in 2018) and each year thereafter instead of 1.4%, the maximum rate otherwise applicable to the taxes to be extended?

The referendum question is: Shall the Board of Education of Bureau Valley Community Unit

School District Number 340, Bureau, Whiteside and Lee Counties, Illinois, build and equip a new school building in Sheffield, Illinois and improve the site thereof, add classrooms, a science lab and a performance gymnasium at Bureau Valley High School, alter, repair, equip and improve the site of the Bureau Valley North school building, including,without limitation, improving the heating, air conditioning and ventilation system and replacing bleachers, and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $17,000,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?
