The spring high school tennis season will get underway next week as Princeton travels to Peoria High School for a match on March 22. Other spring sports will soon be underway, if they haven’t begun already, as some boys baseball games are scheduled for this week.

‘They are a part of your community’ March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Throughout March, the staff and individuals at Gateway Services Inc. will be taking part in activities to increase public awareness of the needs and potential of those with developmental disabilities.

Tracy Wright, Gateway CEO, said the organization promotes the rights of individuals all year long, but this is another chance to share Gateway’s mission with the entire community.

This year’s theme for the awareness month is “See Me For Me!” The theme means looking beyond the disability and seeing everyone the same.

“People with disabilities are your co-workers, friends, neighbors and family. They are a part of your community. They want to be included and can truly offer so much,” Wright said.

Brenda Zehr, an individual at Gateway, said if it wasn’t for the programs offered through the organization, she would just sit home with nothing to do or look forward to.

“I’m always trying to get myself out and be active,” she said.

“I’ve gotten to meet a lot of people, and they get to know about me.”

Norine Jones, another individual at Gateway, said her favorite part of the organization is community supervisor Syndi Klein.

“She’s always there for me if I wanted to see my mom or my dad.

And she took us to a (Chicago) Cubs game,” she said.

Klein has been with Gateway for five years. She assists individuals with everyday tasks, such as helping them balance a checking book, taking them to lunch, doing laundry and making sure they get out and see what lies beyond Princeton through day trips across the state. She said she feels she was called to do the job, which she looks forward to every day.

“This job is very rewarding, especially when you get to see the individuals improve overtime,” she said.

Wright said it’s important to focus on the ability of the clients at Gateway and not the disability.

“We’ve been fortunate to have many churches, businesses and friends reach out to get involved, but there are many people out there who continue to treat people with disabilities differently. Our goal is that one day, we will all be seen as the same,” Wright said.

Since 1970, when Gateway opened its doors, many improvements have been implemented to put greater focus on inclusion in the community, according to Wright.

When it first began, Gateway had only seven individuals and three staff members. Services were pri-

marily provided in a classroom setting, and individuals lived at home with their families.

“The only other option was institutionalization,” Wright said.

Over the years, Gateway has provided residential homes for individuals to enjoy more freedom and independence. Today, there are six homes throughout the Princeton community where individuals live with peers of similar age.

“Individuals are able to get to know their neighbors. They shop locally. They go out to dinner or to the movies. They enjoy the same things

that everyone else does,” Wright said.

Gateway’s day programming has also transitioned and moved away from the structured classes. The programs are now more community-based, which provides individuals even more opportunities to go out and about on a weekly basis.

Employment for the individuals is another factor that’s evolved. Gateway started out providing sheltered workshops for the individuals to work up to six hours a day, five days a week, and earn way below minimum wage.

“Work was based on piece-rate, and it was extremely difficult for

some,” Wright said.

When Gateway made the decision to shut down the workshops, the focus shifted to community employment.

“We now work with a number of local employers to ensure that individuals are paid minimum wage or higher in a real job where they have non-disabled peers,” Wright said.

PHS will present ‘Band Geeks’ on March 16-17 PRINCETON — In the tradition of Glee and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, comes Band Geeks, a celebration of the tribulations of the millions who have spent football halftimes pounding out Sousa-like renditions of “Maria.”

Whether you were in the band, on the team or in the stands, you’ll recognize the woes and revel in the fun of Band Geeks.

Princeton High School students will high-step into their Band Geeks roles for two performances at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17, in the Sally Skinner Council Auditorium.

With just nine members and dwindling funds, the Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers are close to extinction. When a troubled athlete is relegated to their ranks, Elliott, the tuba-playing band captain and Laura, his best friend, must find a way to unite the band, embrace their inner geek and save the Marching Beavers.

Health department plans food protection manager course April 11 OGLESBY — The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments have announced an upcoming eight-hour certified food protection manager course will be offered at the Princeton office.

A minimum of eight hours is

required by the Illinois Department of Public Health for certification. The class will be from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11. Class will run until about 3 or 3:30 p.m., with the exam to follow.

Attendance for the entire day is required to take the exam.

Throughout March, the Princeton Public Library will present programs, films and a special art display featuring local and national contributions by women.

SPRING VALLEY — Lego Play is a new program for children ages 8-16 to create masterpieces with Legos. Legos will be provided by the library. Any child under 7 must be accompanied by an adult and will be given Duplo blocks to build with during the program, if they so desire. Please do not bring in any Legos to the program, respect the creativity of others, leave the Legos at the library, and have fun. The library in Spring Valley is also collecting aluminum cans with the proceeds supporting the library and local Scouts. Cans may be dropped off at the library during its hours of operation. WYANET — The R.A. Sapp Library’s computer classes, normally held on the first and third Thursdays at 6 p.m., will be on hiatus until further notice because of a conflict in time.

The library has been hosting a class on self-publishing, books, poetry, etc., on the second Tuesday each month at 1 p.m. So all aspiring authors and poets, come on out and see how to get those books out to the adoring public.

OHIO — The Ohio Public Library will host its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 24, 10 a.m., in the library.

After all the eggs are found, there will be treats and some craft activities.

PRINCETON — St. Louis Parish in Princeton will host an all-you-can-eat Fry-Day Night Lenten fish fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Friday, March 16. The menu will be baked and fried fish, french fries, macaroni and cheese, baked potato, coleslaw, desserts, water, juice, coffee and tea. Carry-outs will be available. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12, with children 2 and under free.

ARLINGTON — St. Patrick Parish in Arlington will serve a pancake and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sunday, March 18, in the Bishop Franz Hall.

This all-you-can-eat breakfast will feature “Nuco’s” sausage, pancakes, madeto-order eggs, toast and beverage.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for ages 6 to 10 and free for age 5 and under.

Seventh-grader Leah Wilson will be in grand finals

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — The traveling spelling bee trophy will stay at Princeton Christian Academy for another year.

Seventh-grader Leah Wilson was this year’s winner of the Bureau County Spelling Bee, which was held last month at Bureau County Metro Center.

Wilson beat out 15 other students from schools around the county and spelled “excruciating” to win the overall bee.

She said she was pretty nervous going into it, especially when everyone drew numbers for the order they’d spell in, and she wound up with No. 1.

But No. 1 ended up being her lucky charm. Once she spelled the first word correctly, she felt more at ease and knew she could do well.

When it came down to the final two contestants, and Wilson spelled her word correctly, she said it took her a moment to realize she’d won.

She thought she’d have to spell one more word, but when the crowd started clapping, it was then she realized the bee was over and she

was the winner.

Her dad, Drew, was in the crowd and proud to watch his daughter.

While mom, Rebecca, was back at PCA teaching, she found out Leah had won when Principal Tom Odell announced it to the school over the intercom.

“I’m really proud of Leah for winning the spelling bee, but also for working so hard, practicing her words and just realizing that if you work hard at something, then you have a really good chance at success,” Rebecca said.

Wilson practiced her spelling words every night during the week leading up to the bee. She said she’d have one of her parents read her words from a list. If she got one wrong, she’d work hard to memorize the correct spelling.

Wilson will now move on to the Grand Finals Spelling Bee, which will be held Friday, March 23, at 1 p.m., in WEEK-TV Studios in Peoria.

Until then, Wilson is practicing her words every night. She said the words at the Grand Bee are more challenging, so she’s making sure to get enough studying in to feel confident about her competition.

SBA softball camp PERU — The St. Bede softball program is holding a camp for players in grades 2-8 on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 at the academy in the gym, and on the softball field, weather permitting.

Players in grades 2-4 will have camp from 8 to 11 a.m. on March

24, players in grades 5-6 will have camp from noon to 3 p.m. on March 24, and players in grades 7-8 will have camp from noon to 3 p.m. on March 25.

Alumni game April 21 PRINCETON — The fifth annual Princeton Tigers Alumni Basketball Game will be Saturday, April 21 starting at 2 p.m. at Prouty Gym. Manlius dodge ball WALNUT — The Manlius Community Club will host a dodge ball tournament Sunday, March 18 starting at 12:30 p.m. at Bureau Valley North School in Walnut.

St. Bede Academy WYSE team takes first place at competition PERU — The St. Bede Academy WYSE team took first place for the second year in a row.

The Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition (WYSE) is a series of tests meant to determine the best and smartest youth in science and engineering.

Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula.

Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics.

Each test production team produces three tests of increasing levels of difficulty, regional, sectional and state finals.

Schools compete for best scores with teams of 12 students and also for individual student scores.

The top two scores are taken in each category to move to regionals as is the top two scoring teams.

were Putnam County, Marquette, Midland and LaMoille. The team

of students won a first-place trophy for the top cumulative score and they took home 10 medals for individuals placing first through third in the areas of chemistry, English, math, computer science and physics.

The top placing students were: Maggie Daluga and Alex Dittmar, second, chemistry; Rory Dirks, first, English; Alex Dittmar, second, English; Maggie Daluga, first, math; Ryan Edwall, Chris Sanchez and Olivia Smith, second, math; and Ken Wang, third, computer science and physics.

These students are the best in their categories out of the five schools in our region.

“To summarize, we did good.

Best school in 300 division. It’s very exciting to have students from such great academic environments competing at this level. The sectional competition will be held on March 19,” said Dan Fitzpatrick, St. Bede chemistry instructor.

Nine students were winners of the DAR Good Citizen Award: Alexander Peck of Bureau Valley High School, Berenice Campos of DePue High School, Westley Schmidt of Hall High School, Alexa Loftus of Ohio High School, Caleb Sarff of LaMoille High School, Michaela Crowe of Princeton High School, Anna Mattern of Putnam County High School, Joseph Peacock of St. Bede Academy, and Olivia Koll of Henry-Senachwine High School.

DAR Good Citizens are selected at their individual schools by faculty and peers based upon leadership, service, dependability and patriotism.

Sarff’s essay for the DAR Good Citizens has advanced to District II judging.

Ryan Frank of Princeton High School

was winner of the Christopher Columbus essay. Students were asked to write about why a country would fund the trip of an explorer from a different country. Columbus, an Italian, was an explorer whose funding was provided

by Spain. The essay was written by students in ninth through 12th grade.

Graeham Rumley of Princeton Christian Academy was winner of the American History essay. Students were to imagine living in 1918 and determine how the end of the Great War would impact life at that time.

The essay was written by students in fifth through eighth grades.

Additionally, the Princeton Chapter awarded a DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal to a student for the first time.

The award was given to Peacock. The medal is awarded to a student participating in a non-ROTC, military-affiliated cadet program funded by a school or private organization.

Peacock was recognized as a cadet who has distinguished himself through outstanding leadership, honor, service, courage and patriotism. Peacock is in the Civil Air Patrol (Air Force Auxiliary) based at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru.
