The hands of time ... Gary Bruce, owner of Bruce Jewelers in Princeton, will have quite a job ahead of him this weekend, as the Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 13. It’s probably easier to just set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed on Saturday evening, so you won’t be an hour late to Sunday church or other obligations. U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act into law in 1966. The U.S. Department of Transportation is the keeper of Daylight Saving Time. Experts on the subject say most people are able to adapt to the time change in just a few days. The exception to that general rule focuses on the folks who attempt to take advantage of the extra hour of daylight and find themselves staying up later than usual. There are only two states in the country that do not observe Daylight Saving Time — Alaska and Arizona. U.S. territories Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas also do not participate in the time change. While some argue with the benefit of changing one’s clocks twice a year, there have been a couple of arguments throughout the years in favor of more daylight hours, including the concept that fewer traffic accidents happen during daylight hours and also the idea of saving energy. Another reasoning behind the time change was to provide farmers more daylight hours in the fields. Whether those ideas are still applicable in today’s world is unclear. And just for record ...
