Granville Fire Department to host fish fry A great place to eat fish during Lent is the Granville Fire Department’s 17th annual Fish Fry. This week’s event is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6. The menu includes fish, french fries, cole slaw, bread and homemade cake.

Prices for the fish fry are $8 for adults and $8.50 for carry outs. Children ages 12 and under are $5 each. Proceeds from the event go to the purchase of more equipment needed for the Granville Fire Department.

According to Granville Fire Department Chief Ron Campbell, it takes 16 of their hardworking volunteers to run the fish fry. He invites all to come and try the meal out.

Campbell said, “This is the best fish fry in the whole of Putnam County on this Friday night, served by the absolute best people.”

This Week The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at the First United Methodist Church, 316 S. Church St., Princeton.

The Templeton Band will perform at the monthly Cherry pie and coffee social hour from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Cherry Church hall.

The Princeton Lions Club will host its annual drawdown and dance Saturday, March 7, at the Princeton Elks Lodge. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the drawdown will begin at 7 p.m. Rodeo Drive will perform. Dinner for two with tickets costs $35 per couple. The Standard Fire Department will host its annual spaghetti supper from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Standard Fire Station, 121 W. Route 71.

Bureau County Historical Society presents domestic servants program PRINCETON — For many Bureau County families in the 19th century, domestic servants were as much a part of life as they were for the aristocratic Crawleys in the popular PBS series “Downton Abbey.”

The Bureau County Historical Society, in cooperation with the statewide Road Scholars Speakers Series, will present “Domestic Servants in the 19th century” a program

by Erika Holst at 1 p.m.

Sunday, March 8. The program, which is free, will be held at the historic Grace Norris Home, 109 Park Ave. West, Princeton.

Holst’s program will bring back memories for residents who have fond recollections of the cooks, seamstresses, nannies, gardeners, bakers and laundresses who served their ancestors in Bureau County homes. For others, this program will be a fascinating introduction to a world of class distinctions now mostly unfamiliar.

The Road Scholars program, part of the Illinois Humanities Council, provides organizations statewide with a roster of speakers on topics of history, culture, music, politics, law and science, among others.

38 Special, Lonestar, Jo Dee Messina to headline fair lineup PRINCETON — The Bureau County Fair in Princeton, as part of the 160th fair, will present two concerts for the 2015 fair.

On Aug. 27, the fair will present 38 Special at 8 p.m., and on Aug. 28, the fair will present Lonestar with special guest Jo Dee Messina at 8 p.m. Tickets for all 2015 fair shows will go on sale at 9 a.m. June 6 and will be available through the fair’s website, at the fair box office or by phone order.

After more than three decades together, 38 Special continues to bring its signature blast of Southern rock to more than 100 cities a year. And at each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance.

Their many gold and platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse.

With sales in excess of $20 million, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes, “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Caught Up in You,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Chain Lightnin’,” “Second Chance” and more — timeless hits that remain a staple at radio, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen.

A 20-year anniversary is cause for celebration, and Lonestar is marking this career milestone in more ways than one. But it isn’t hit records and trophies that have

kept Lonestar going strong. On the contrary, says lead singer Richie McDonald.

“Honestly, through it all, the one thing that has kept Lonestar around is that we’re just four good old boys from Texas.” All

four members originally hail from blue collar households, and place a premium on the value of hard work. “No matter how much success we’ve had, it didn’t change us as people.”

Originally formed in Nashville in 1992, Lonestar played more than 500 shows before landing a recording contract. “We traveled for two and a half, maybe three years, just playing in bars,” Britt recalls. “We were starting from zero back then.” But all those gigs paid off. By the time they released their self-titled debut album in 1995, they already had an enthusiastic fan base. Their first single, “Tequila Talkin’,” went Top 10 on the country charts. It’s follow-up did even better: “No News” would be the first of many No. 1 singles for Lonestar.

Lonestar continued to ascend in the years that followed. Their third album, 1999’s Lonely Grill, was certified multi-platinum in both the United States and Canada. In addition to “Amazed,” which was No. 1 with country audiences for eight weeks in a row, Lonely Grill yielded three more No. 1 country hits: “Smile,” “Tell Her” and “What About Now.” The 2001 release “I’m Already There” topped the country album charts, as did the band’s 2003 retrospective “From There To Here: The Greatest Hits,” which produced yet another No. 1 single, “My Front Porch Looking In.” That timeless appeal transcends nationality, too. A recent string of European dates with Reba McEntire, Ricky Skaggs and Little Big Town found Lonestar thrilling audiences in England, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany. In a four-star review of their performance at Wembley Arena, UK daily The Guardian noted that Lonestar “got an even bigger welcome than McEntire,” and praised how “they reminded us of country’s greatest

strength: picture-painting, story-based, tearyour-heart-out lyrics that are the most direct and lucid in popular music.”

Jo Dee Messina fans will soon get what they’ve been clamoring for as the multiplatinum, award- winning country singer/songwriter has just announced her new full-length album will be released Wednesday, March 18. With its title ME chosen by fans, the album marks Jo Dee’s most personal album to date as she wrote or co-wrote many of the songs and will release it on her own newly established label, Dreambound Records.

Spring 2013 found Messina free from a longterm record deal. She became free to make the album she wanted, so the forward-thinking country star took to the crowd-funding website Kickstarter.com to create a new full-length album for her fans, with her fans. The “My time.

Our music.” campaign allowed her backers to be involved with every step that goes into creating and recording the album.

Throughout the process, her fans helped Jo Dee surpass her $100,000 goal, making her Kickstarter.com campaign the most successful one to come out of Nashville and at the time of completion, the 15th largest funded music campaign in Kickstarter.com history. The fans were given a voice.

Via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Stage-It, her fans selected which songs would be included on the album, submitted artwork for her label logo, selected the album title ME and chose the album’s first single “Peace Sign.”

Although this album is a fresh start for Jo Dee, she is no stranger to the entertainment world.

Debuting in 1996 with the hit single “Heads Carolina, Tales California,” she has charted nine No. 1 singles, 16 Top 40 singles and sold more than 5 million records worldwide.

Cost of the ticket includes spaghetti, salad and bread. A cash bar will also be available. Door prizes will be awarded each hour and a 50/50 raffle will be available. Patrons are invited to support their local library and enjoy great food and company.

How about some good warm casseroles for this bitter cold weather we’ve been having. To me, casseroles are something to fill up the stomach and keep you warm inside.

Scalloped Potatoes and Ham 10 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 3 cups cubed fully cooked ham 2 large onions, thinly sliced 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese 1 10 3/4-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon pepper In a greased 6-quart slow cooker, layer half of the potatoes, ham, onions and cheese. Repeat layers. Pour soup over top. Sprinkle with paprika and pepper.

Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or until potatoes are tender.

Reunion Casserole 1 pound ground beef 1/2 pound bulk spicy pork sausage 1 cup chopped onion 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese, divided 1 medium green pepper, chopped 1 11-ounce can whole kernel corn, drained 1 10 3/4-ounce can condensed tomato soup, undiluted 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce 1/3 cup sliced pimiento stuffed olives 1 clove garlic, minced

1/2 teaspoon salt 8 ounces wide noodles, cooked and drained In a large Dutch oven, cook the beef, sausage and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in 1 cup cheese, green pepper, corn soup, tomato sauce, olives, garlic, salt and noodles. Transfer to a greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Cover and bake at 350° for 35 minutes. Uncover, bake for 10 minutes longer.

Frito Chili Dog Casserole 1 pound ground beef 4 hot dogs cut in 1-inch pieces 1 onion, chopped (1 cup) 1 1.25-ounce envelope dry chili seasoning mix 1 14 1/2-ounce can diced tomatoes 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce 1 8.5-ounce package corn muffin mix 1/3 cup milk 1 egg 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (6 ounces) 1 1/2 cups corn chips, about 3 ounces such as Fritos Preheat oven to 400°. Heat non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Add beef, hot dogs, onion and seasoning mix, cook stirring until meat is browned and onion is just tender, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in diced tomatoes, with their juices, tomato sauce and 1/2 cup water. Transfer to a 2-quart baking dish. In bowl, combine muffin mix, egg and 1/4 cup cheese. Spread over beef mixture, leaving a 2-inch border. Sprinkle with chips and remaining cheese. Bake until bubbly and topping is cooked through, 20 to 25 minutes. Serves 6. Serve with a salad of your choice.

2 8-ounce tubes refrigerated crescent rolls 1 pound bulk pork sausage 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1 envelope ranch salad dressing mix 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese Unroll one tube of crescent dough into one long rectangle, seal seams and perforations. Press onto the bottom of a greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile in a small skillet, brown sausage; drain and set aside.

Combine cream cheese and dressing mix.

Spread over crust. Top with sausage and cheddar cheese. On a lightly floured surface, press or roll second tube of crescent dough into a 13-by-9-inch rectangle, sealing seams and perforations. Place 1 20-ounce package refrigerated over cheese. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or shredded hash brown potatoes until golden brown. Let stand for 5 min- 1/3 cup butter, melted utes before cutting. Serves 8. Serve along

Hash Brown Sausage Bake

1 teaspoon beef bouillon granules 1 pound bulk pork sausage 1/3 cup chopped onion 1 cup (8 ounces) small curd cottage cheese 3 eggs, lightly beaten 4 slices process American cheese, chopped In a large bowl, combine the hash brown, butter and bouillon. Press onto the bottom and up the sides of a greased 10-inch pie plate. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Meanwhile in a large skillet, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.

In a large bowl, combine the sausage mixture, cottage cheese, eggs and American cheese. Pour into crust. Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting, Serves 6 to 8.

Pheasants Forever PRINCETON — The Bureau County Pheasants Forever 2015 annual banquet will be Thursday, March 5, at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m.

Following dinner there will be a live and silent auctions.

Items will include prints and numerous upland art, merchandise, pheasant hunts and much more. Many raffles and drawings, 50/50, guns and pistols all make for a fun filled Banquet. There will also be signup for a youth pheasant hunt and a youth shotgun drawing.

Swing into Spring PERU — New coach Bill Booker and the St. Bede Academy Bruins’ baseball program will host a Spring Training Baseball Clinic on Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8. Sessions will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon March 7 for ages 7-9 and from 1 to 4 p.m.

Participants will learn baseball fundamentals

from SBA coaches and players. Campers may bring their own equipment and are expected to wear proper baseball attire. Weather permitting, some drills may be at the Academy field.

‘The Sandlot’ PRINCETON — Princeton Youth Baseball and Softball, in partnership with the Princeton Optimist Club, will offer a special viewing of ‘The Sandlot’ at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Apollo Theatre. To receive your free movie ticket for ‘The Sandlot’, you must register for the 2015 baseball/ softball season from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 or from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14 at the Prouty Building.

Lori’s Walleye Run SPRING VALLEY — The 29th annual Walleye 5K, now known as Lori’s Walleye Run in memory of longtime booster Lori Guerrini, will be held Saturday, March 25. The race will start at 9 a.m. at Hall High School.

There are 12 age divisions for both male and female runners with awards going to the top three in each division along with the top finishers from Spring Valley.
