Getting ready for some March Madness The Princeton Tigers are getting ready for some March Madness, which they are hosting this week at Prouty Gym for a Class 2A boys basketball sectional. The field includes the champions from the Orion, Sterling Newman, Byron and Monmouth-Roseville regionals. The sectional championship game will tip off at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4 at Prouty Gym at Princeton High School. The Princeton sectional champion will advance to the DeKalb Super-Sectional Tuesday, March 8 at the Convocational Center, facing the winner from the Clifton Central Sectional.

PROM-ising a special event Annual dress sale brings the effort full circle

PRINCETON — Women from all over the county and beyond plan to flock to the fourth annual PROMise dress sale which kicks off Saturday, March 5.

This year’s sale will showcase nearly 500 new or preworn dresses, which will be priced at $50 or less.

While the sale is geared toward prom, the shopping event offers dresses of all kinds that would fit all sorts of events including homecoming, eighth-grade dances, weddings, graduations and much more. Aside from dresses, shoes, jewelry, purses, gloves and more will be available for sale. Dress sizes range from children’s sizes to women’s plus sizes.

Four years ago, event coordinator Amy Thompson started-up the PROMise dress sale as a way to give women a break when it comes to dress shopping. Her thought was why not offer ladies an opportunity to shop for their special event without worrying about spending a lot of money on a dress that might only be worn one evening.

Through the years, Thompson’s efforts have turned into a one-of-kind sale that not only supports young women, but also carries on to benefiting community organizations and the work they support. Thompson describes it as a full circle effect. The circle starts when a dress is donated to the sale. From there, the dress is bought by someone who might not have had the budget to purchase a brand new dress for their event. The money used to buy the dress then goes on to benefit organizations that serve those in need, both locally and globally.

“This sale is so much bigger than just a prom dress sale,” Thompson said.

The sale continues to grow each year with more dresses, more volunteers, more shoppers from all over Bureau County and beyond ... and more proceeds raised. Last year’s sale raised $3,000, which was doubled from the previous year.

This year, half of the proceeds raised will be donated to the Bureau County Food Pantry. Thompson said one $50 dress will buy $500 worth of food from the food bank for local people in need.

The other half will benefit Mission Possible Kids at the First United Methodist Church. The group, made up of elementary-aged students, participates in local and global service projects throughout the year. Mission Possible

GRANVILLE — What started out as an idea for a themed night for men, a spaghetti dinner and a screening of a classic spaghetti western, has surprisingly turned into a very successful event for local women.

“We had been thinking of doing a spaghetti western night for men and had put a post on Facebook to see what kind of response we’d get to the idea. Someone suggested doing a night for women. We tried it, and we couldn’t have been happier with the nice outcome,” said manager Bill Guynn.

The evening featured nine different vendors in the dining room. There, the 50 to 60 women in attendance browsed, shopped and mingled before going back to the bar to sample the $4 special martinis created by guest mixologist Matty Illman.

“Our vendors were extremely happy, and all of them have scheduled to be at our next Ladies’ Night which will be

from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. There will be mom and pop vendors and representatives from Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Mary Kay and Améo Essential Oils. We had vendors selling custom gift cards, scarves, chocolates, purses, metal art and more. We don’t charge our vendors anything for participating, and there’s no charge for our guests,” said Guynn.

Guynn also wants the public to know the dining room at Pagan O’Leary’s is available on Saturdays and Sundays free of charge for anyone wanting to host cultural events.

“Whether it’s craft, music or woodworking lessons, or anything that would benefit the community, it’s welcome. We want to do this for our community. We feel Putnam County is under-served with these types of events and events for women.

They happen regularly in Princeton and surrounding areas, but not enough in Putnam County, and we’re trying to change that,” said Guynn.

ISBE seeks sponsors/sites for summer food programs SPRINGFIELD – Though there is a chill in the air now, summer is on its way, and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) wants to make sure every child enjoys access to nutritious meals during the summer break. School districts, local government entities and nonprofits are encouraged to become a summer food site sponsor and/ or site to provide free, healthy meals and snacks to low-income children.

Participation in summer meal programs continues to increase, but still falls short of the meals served during the school year. During the summer of 2014, Illinois program sites served meals to a little over 107,000 children, or 14.8 percent of the almost 726,000 children who received free or reduced-priced meals during the 201314 school year. Nationally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that nearly 3.2 million children received summer meals on an average day during the summer.

The total number of children participating in summer nutrition programs nationally saw an increase of 215,000 children, or 7.3 percent, from 2013. However, only 16 out of every 100 eligible children in 2014 received a meal in the summertime.

The Summer Food Service Program provides free meals and snacks to low-income children through age 18 when schools are on break. Individuals age 18 through 21 who are enrolled in school programs for persons with disabilities and have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) on file may also participate. Summer food programs typically operate when schools close for summer during June, July and August, but can start as early as May and may go into September. Sites must be located in areas where at least 50 percent of the children are eligible for free and reduced-price meals from the National School Lunch Program or family income is 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

ISBE administers the USDA’s ”Summer

Food Service Program.” School districts, local governments and nonprofits can all sponsor summer food sites, housing the sites at schools, parks, recreation centers, housing projects, migrant centers, churches, summer camps and other locations.

More than 1,700 summer food service program sites offered free meals last summer through more than 168 Illinois sponsors.

WALNUT — Patrons are invited to stop by the library to see the new display set-up by Gene and Arlene Henrikson that showcases semi-precious stone birds from Sao Paulo, Brazil. All the birds are hand-carved from Amethyst and Quartz.

The library is also collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling.

The library receives up to $4 for each cartridge recycled. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off. Large laser cartridges are not accepted through this program and will not fit through the holes of the collection box.

Book sale and book fair planned in March Friends of the Princeton Public Library Book Sale PRINCETON — Friends of the Princeton Public Library will host its annual Friends of the Library Sale from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday March 17; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, March 17; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 19. Saturday is also Bag Day, where event-goers can buy a bag of books for $5, specially-marked books are half price.

The event is held in the Princeton Public Library Friends Sale Room at the library at 698 E. Peru St. in Princeton.

This year, the Friends are proud to announce there will be more than 900 used books, both hardcover and paperback, offered for sale. All books have been cleaned and sorted into more than 30 categories for easy shopping. Annual Midwest Ag Museum Banquet is March 18

PEORIA — U.S. 18th District Congressman Darin LaHood will speak at the annual Midwest Agriculture Museum Banquet on Friday, March 18, at the Wildlife Prairie Park, Hespell Hall.

A social hour, including hors d’ouerves and a cash bar, at 5:30 p.m. will be followed directly by LaHood’s comments at 6 p.m., including time for questions and answers.

His remarks will include a discussion of recent agriculture legislation on Capitol Hill and other ag-related issues specific to Central Illinois.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by a short business meeting including an updated Power Point presentation and a discussion of recent developments about the museum’s site location.

The cost of the event is $25 per person.

Farmland values conference is March 17

BLOOMINGTON — Finding out what’s happening with Illinois farmland values and “putting all the pieces together” will be the focus of discussion at the 2016 Illinois Land Values Conference which will be held on March 17. The event is sponsored by the Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers and will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton.

The half-day event is open to the public, and walk-in registrations will be welcomed.

Speakers on the program include: Bruce Sherrick, TIAA-CREF Center for Farmland Research, University of Illinois; Paul Pittman, CEO of Farmland Partners, a publicly traded real estate company which is looking for and acquiring farmland throughout the country, and Mark Dotzour, a real estate economist at Texas A&M University.

The end of the program will be the annual report from ISPFMRA on farmland values and lease trends across Illinois. The program is set to begin at 8 a.m. March 17 with registration opening at 7 a.m. There is a registration fee of $70 for ISPFMRA and RLI members and $80 for the general public.

Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Book Fair

PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor a book fair from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25, in the Medical Office Building lobby at the hospital in Princeton. In addition, on Friday, March 25, Auxiliary members will host a bake sale from 7 a.m. to noon.

The PMH Auxiliary hosts a variety of book, bake and craft sales each year to raise money to purchase equipment for the hospital. Religion events/services Lenten musical meditations and luncheons PRINCETON — The Hampshire Colony Congregational Church in Princeton will host a series of Lenten noon time musical meditations and luncheons again this year. These meditations began on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and continue on for five more consecutive Wednesdays through March 23. The church is located at 604 S. Church St. in Princeton.

LIFT will host event on March 6

MALDEN — The Malden United Methodist Church will host its annual chicken and biscuit dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 13, at the church, 324 Main St. in Malden.

The menu will consist of creamed chicken and biscuits, vegetables, gelatin salad, dessert and beverage. Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $7 for adults and $4 for ages 12 and under. Carry-outs will also be available.

LASALLE — Christian women of all ages are invited to attend a Ladies In Fellowship Together (LIFT) event at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Grace United Methodist Church in LaSalle. Special entertainment will be provided by performers from Stage 212, presenting comedy improvisation skits.

PAC will present ‘Making Memory Cloths with Leslee Nelson’ PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council will host “Making Memory Cloths with Leslee Nelson” March 4-27 at the Prairie Arts Center Gallery in Princeton.

Nelson uses perhaps the most intimate art medium of all: Cloth quilts that hug us. Napkins that dab our lips. Handkerchiefs that collect our tears. Textiles with memories serve as the canvas for Madison artist Nelson, who will display 30 years worth of work during her solo show.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, Nelson also will sit down at the gallery table and invite anyone to make a “memory cloth” — a piece of handiwork that, through the meditative process of embroidery, helps stitch together the past. She will have supplies available, but participants can choose to bring their own memory-imbued cloth, such as a table napkin or handkerchief. It is recommended that you sign up at the reception on March 4 for this class or call the center at 815-875-2787 to reserve a place in the class.

“Whenever I have an exhibit and I’m there, people start telling me their stories and saying, ‘I wish I could do that.’ And I say, ‘Well, of course you can. Go ahead,’” Nelson said of her memory cloths.

Nelson’s retrospective at the Prairie Arts Gallery will include a broad range of work, from pieces incorporating hand-

me-down quilt squares to multi-layered charm dolls and large, complex hangings made from Japanese Gampi paper. But the conversation pieces, literally, are her memory cloths, sparked by an exhibit she saw in 2005 titled “The Art of War.” Featured were memory cloths from South Africa: brightly colored fabrics embroidered with images from the maker’s memory. Next to them hung the text of the stories behind the memories — experiences left out of the official record of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

“They talked about how part of (the process of memory cloths) was the making of it, and part of it was putting it on the wall until it no longer triggered a response,” she said. “They were so delighted that I had fallen in love with their process and was doing it here, too.”

A reception for Nelson will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the Prairie Arts Center Gallery, located at 24 Park Ave. West in Princeton, where she will give a brief introduction of the history of how these beautiful treasures came together.

Tom: In my spare time, I play Madden, I like to play the piano and play on a travel baseball team in Princeton. I am a pitcher too! This might shock you, but I can pitch from both arms and got an “ambidextrous” glove for Christmas.

All you need is a pack of Club crackers, a pack of bacon and brown sugar.

You wrap a cracker with one slice of bacon and put it on a pan. Once all the crackers are wrapped and the bacon is gone, you put a spoonful of brown sugar on each bacon-wrapped cracker on the pan.

Put the crackers in the oven at 250 degrees for about two hours. You can eat them when they are hot or wait until they are cooled.

Tiger Alumni Game PRINCETON — The third annual Princeton Tigers Alumni Basketball Game will be Saturday, April 2, at Prouty Gymnasium. Tip-off is 2 p.m.

It is open to all former Malden, Princeton and Tiskilwa players.

The format will depend upon the number of players and ages of players. An “Old Timers” game and “Young Guns” game would be ideal.

PERU — The St. Bede Bruins baseball team will hold its Spring Training Baseball Clinic in March. Session 1 for ages 6-8 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 5. Session II for ages 9-11 will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 6. Session III for ages 12-14 will be from 8:30 am. to noon Saturday, March 12.

Instructors for the clinic will be St. Bede coaches and players, headed by varsity coach Bill Booker. Participants will learn baseball fundamentals for the upcoming season. Sessions will focus on hitting, fielding, throwing, bunting, pitch and catching skills.
