Those famous Irish words translate to the simple phrase, “Ireland Forever,” a phrase used often during St. Patrick’s Day festivities around the world.

The Princeton Park District Foundation is hosting an event, filled with all kinds of Irish hoopla, food, music and fun. Dubbed “Shamrock Shenanigans,” the fundraiser is set for Saturday, March 4, at the Bureau County Metro Center. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and food will begin being served at 6 p.m.

Dress for the evening is business casual or Irish.

Tickets are $30, and proceeds benefit the work of the Princeton Park District Foundation. Tickets can be purchased at the front desk at the Bureau County Metro Center or at the door on the night of the event. The public is invited.

‘Your mission, should you choose to accept it’ Mission Possible agents package 10,000 meals for families in need

PRINCETON — Volunteers and agents of the Mission Possible Kids program at First United Methodist Church gathered on the evening of Feb. 16 at the church with one mission: To pack 10,000 meals for families of third world countries.

The fellowship hall was full of excitement and busy hands of about 100 people of all ages, who worked with the organization Rise Against Hunger.

Various stations were set-up where children and families could scoop meals into packages, weight them or load them into boxes.

The group was given a two-hour time frame to package the meals. After each 1,000, one of the agents from Mission Possible Kids got to ring a gong and announce the progress. The announcement was usually met with load cheering, before the volunteers got back to work packing the meals.

Rebecca Wilson, coordinator of Mission Possible Kids, explained how she had been looking for another activity for her agents to take part in and came across the Rise Against Hunger organization. Her group, which is made up of first through fifth grade students, is all about touching the lives of others and improving the world they live in.

Mission Possible Kids got started in October 2014 and has, so far, completed 38 missions and touched more than 12,000 lives.

Tracey Edwards, program manager of Rise Against Hunger, was onsite at Thursday’s packing event. She said her organization is currently active in 34 countries. The organization’s volunteer-packaged meals support children’s attendance at school, giving incentives to adults to learn a new trade or bolster clinic patients’ health in other to bring about holistic and transformational development.

A win for WIN Women Inspired Network holds promising giving circle meeting On Jan. 29, August Hill Winery hosted the second meeting of the Women Inspired Network, a network of philanthropic women who focus on the issues, interests and concerns of women throughout Starved Rock Country.

The event brought Kathi Davis, the program director of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, located in Bloomington, as the guest speaker. Davis’ experience and involvement with the Women to Women Giving Circle in Bloomington provided insight and knowledge about women’s giving collectives throughout the world.

WIN, as Women Inspired Network is frequently abbreviated, was created by the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation in partnership with OSF Healthcare Foundation, I-80 Region. Giving circles such as Women to Women and the Women Inspired Network are generally created by community foundations to perpetuate and

encourage collective community giving and related initiatives. OSF Healthcare has similar women’s organization throughout its communities. Pamela Beckett, president of the SRCCF, and Cherie Reynolds, director of philanthropy for OSF Healthcare Systems, I-80 Region, recognized the similar goals of their respective organizations and a partnership was born. The mission of WIN is to raise substantial dollars through collective giving, and to give back to not-for-profit projects, programs and/or causes in LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties.

Davis shared stories of her own philanthropic endeavors, discussing how the Women to Women Giving Circle came to be and how it has since evolved. What started with 105 founding members has since grown into a large group of empowered and socially active women who issued nearly $42,000 in grants in 2016, and more than

Although WIN is new to Starved Rock Country, word is spreading quickly. In less than 90 days, more than 50 women have joined the ranks of membership, with 17 others making general donations as “Friends of WIN.” The first year goal is to secure 150 members, each making an annual donation of $200, to raise more than $30,000 collectively. Nominations for grant recipients are made by members, and grant funds will be distributed at the annual celebration of giving in November.

The next WIN meeting will be held March 26 at August Hill Winery. August Hill Winery held the past event on a day and hour they would usually be closed in a show of support for this program. In addition, August Hill Winery pledged 5 percent of the proceeds resulting from product sales during the event to be donated to WIN. WALNUT — The library will be hosting an art and craft fair on Saturday, April 8, to coincide with the vendor fair being held at the Walnut Community Center. LAMOILLE —The library has received many great new reads for adults, teens and children of all ages.

Stop by the library and check out the new collection of comic books and graphic novels. The issues have been grouped into 34 series titles including, “Wolverine,” “Iron Man,” “Deadpool,” “Captain America,” “Spider-man,” “Batman and Robin” and the DC Comic world.

Students learn engineering concepts through competition Martin Engineering sponsors First Lego League teams NEPONSET — Martin Engineering of Neponset, one of Central Illinois’ largest multinational employers, has sponsored two FIRST LEGO League teams from Neponset Grade School and Central Junior High School in Kewanee.

Guided by adult coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research serious issues such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution.

They also must design, build and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.

Teams learn to apply science, technology, engineering and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a realworld problem. Along their discovery journey, members develop critical thinking and team-building skills, learn about basic STEM applications and even develop presentation skills, as they submit their solutions with a dash of creativity to judges.

“We’re proud to be able to sponsor a couple of teams in the local community who may not have realized how much fun STEM learning can be,” said Paul Harrison,

director of the Conveyor Products Business Group at Martin Engineering. “And in a couple of years, they will be eligible to join our FIRST Robotics Completion Team 6237 Martin Motion, which will give them even more advanced STEM experience and life skills.”

This year’s participants consisted of students between fourth and eighth grades who worked together in order to complete a previously-announced challenge.

The 2016 Animal Allies season encouraged more than 28,000 student teams to think like scientists and engineers to imagine what might be possible to help the animals that share the planet with us.

Both of the Martin-sponsored groups worked on the Animal Allies challenge after school beginning in August.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, the teams — the Central Junior High School Boilerbots and Neponset Grade School BotCats -- competed in their FIRST LEGO League Tournament in Moline at the John Deere World Headquarters.

The students designed and built 10 stations related to helping a specific animal.

Each team selected a dif-

ferent focus: the Bot-Cats decided on the honey bee, while the Boilerbots chose the local cat shelter.

In addition to the LEGO building, the team was judged on other aspects, including core values, robot design and project presentation. The Boilerbots pitched their idea to partner with the Kewanee Animal Shelter and host a cat adopt-a-thon to help with overcrowding, while the Bot-Cats brainstormed for ways to help rebuild the honey bee population, even coming up with a poster and special cheer that they performed about saving the bees. Both teams were made possible through a partnership between Martin Engineering, Kewanee Schools and the Regional Office of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.

Choosing the honeybee population as a subject is particularly meaningful to Martin Engineering and its history. Company founder Edwin F. Peterson was also a beekeeper, selling honey to local grocery stores in the 1930s. His profits — known as “honey money” — were a cornerstone for what has become a glob-

Gateway to hold annual phone-a-thon

Experience college life at 4-H Illini Summer Academies Registration is now open for the 2017 4-H Illini Summer Academies through the University of Illinois Extension.

Dates this year are Sunday, June 25, through Thursday, June 29.

Participants will stay in the newer living quarters on campus, Bousefield Hall. There are new academies, including agricultural communication, journalism and filmmaking, theatre arts hip hop, theater arts costuming, as well as an advanced session in human development/ family studies. This program offers teens the opportunity to explore the University of Illinois campus and many degree programs and careers.

The cost of the conference varies depending on which Academy of study you choose. Payment is requested at the time of registration via credit card. Payments made by check must be received within one week of registration or the registration will be canceled. Registration closes May 15. Financial need scholarships will be available from Illinois 4-H Foundation donors.

The conference is open to youth who have completed eighth grade by the conference and will be at least 14 years old by Sept. 1.

PRINCETON — Gateway Services, Inc. has announced its annual phone-a-thon will be held Monday, March 6, and Tuesday, March 7, at their professional services building in Princeton.

The phone-a-thon, Gateway Services’ largest fundraising event, is similar to a telethon, with volunteer callers working to contact past supporters of Gateway Services. More than 20 people dedicate their time to ensure the phone-a-thon’s success.

This year, Gateway Services has set a goal to raise $45,000. Funds raised will be used to continue to provide quality services to adults with disabilities in Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties.

teerism represented within the family. Illinois State Police and American Legion officials prepare for summer youth police program SPRINGFIELD — Officials with the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the American Legion announce plans for the 45th annual American Legion Youth Police Camp (ALYPC). The camp will again be held at the Illinois State Police Academy in Springfield and will run June 25-30.

Dozens of teens from across Illinois will discover career opportunities through training with police and military personnel. The primary purpose of the ALYPC is to establish an interactive and positive relationship between Illinois teens and law enforcement officers.

American Legion volunteers and ISP troopers are assigned to manage the program and serve as instructors and mentors.

Many of the American Legion and ISP volunteers are former graduates of the program.

“I enjoy being a member of the American Legion for a number of reasons,” said Sangamon County Sheriff Wes Barr. “One, obviously, is what they do for the veterans. But also, it’s because of community programs like this that reach out to the community and try to make it a better place,” he added.

Barr, a member of American Legion Post 32 in Springfield, was the keynote speaker at the 2016 ALYPC graduation ceremony.

MORRIS — Registration is now open for the 8th annual Liberty 5K Run/ Walk! The Liberty Run 5K Run/Walk will take place on July 3 at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Morris.

Beginning at Liberty and Jefferson streets, the course will take you through Nostalgic Downtown Morris, area parks, neighborhoods and returns downtown on Liberty Street. The course is completely paved, primarily flat, with some slight hills for a fast and enjoyable race. St. Bede spring training

PERU — The St. Bede Academy Bruins baseball team will hold a spring

training clinic in March for boys ages 6-14 (through eighth grade).

Clinic sessions will be: Ages 6-8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 4.

Ages 9-11 from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 5.

Ages 12-14 from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 11.

St. Bede head coach Bill Booker and his coaching staff will be assisted by members of the Bruins baseball team.

Cost is $30 for the first child in a family, $25 for each additional sibling registered by Feb. 25. Fees increase to $35 after Feb. 25.

Consignments are welcome any time, but will be closed after the lot is full or at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 14th, whichever comes first. Anderson Enterprises & Equipment LLC will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. All tires, tanks, fuel barrels, and a few other items must be saleable or you will be asked to take them back home. Titles must accompany vehicles at consignment time.
