Chinese youths spend time in Princeton Local family hosts junior high visitors

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PERU — Earlier this month, St. Bede Academy hosted 16 junior high students from China who participated in a theater camp offered at the academy.

The students stayed with St. Bede families during their time in the states.

A Princeton family hosted two of the students.

Tracy Makransky said when she and her husband, Marty, were asked to be a host family, they quickly agreed.

“We had the room, and we were happy to help them,” she said.

The students arrived on Feb. 3, and stayed a week and a half.

The Makransky family hosted two boys, Dalun and Sunny.

Makransky said her son, Thomas, 13, grew up with three older sisters and always wanted a brother, so it was a great opportunity to provide him a couple of brothers for a short time.

“They got along great and discussed school, played basketball at the Metro Center, and they all enjoyed some down time playing Xbox,” she said.

Makransky said it was a “terrific experience” having them stay with her family.

“They are very curious about Americans, and we, in turn, were eager to learn about their culture,” she said.

The experience helped the Makransky family remember just how much of a privileged nation the U.S. is.

“The boys tended to be very conservative when it came to running

water or drinking water. We have an abundance of clean water available to us,” she said.

“In China, I understand, there is insufficient local water and increased pollution, which has impacted their society and environment.”

Their portions at meal time were also small, and they preferred to

eat rice and noodles over meals like lasagna and chicken casserole.

“The one thing I did not prepare for was making sure they had chop sticks to eat with,” Makransky said, adding they did learn how to use American utensils during their stay.

Aside from their home life, the Makransky family also got to learn a little bit about their junior high school in China, which consists of seventh, eighth and ninth grades.

Junior high students attend school from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and work on homework until 10 p.m. They have four classes that consist of English, Chinese, math and physics.

“Their favorite subjects are math and physics. …They are (also) able to play basketball at school, which is their favorite sport,” Makransky said.

Overall, it was a fascinating experience for both the Makransky family and the students.

“They had the opportunity to attend a theater camp during the day at St. Bede, and they were able to see some sites in Chicago, went to a movie, went skiing and did some shopping,” Makransky said.

The students had a variety of learning experiences and a lot of fun. It was the boys’ first trip to America, and Makransky said she’s confident they will go back to China to tell of their overall experience in America.

“I believe they will be eager to come back someday,” she said.

They raised a glass — a number of them, in fact — to the Bureau County United Way the evening of Feb. 17 at the United Way’s Top It Off Beer and Wine Tasting event at The Barn at Hornbaker Gardens, rural Princeton. Several business provided samples, among them Bent River Brewery, August Hill Winery, Euclid Beverages, Guys and Gals Salon, Tangled Roots Brewery and Geneseo Brewery. A silent auction was another component of the event. The United Way campaign, which stood at about $70,000 before the event, raised approximately $12,000, according to Kim Scott, executive director. ‘When you see something like that, you want to help’ Parkland wrestlers get support, advice from Princeton man

BY JIM DUNN jdunn@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Bob Schirmer of Princeton traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Valentine’s Day to coach in a mixed martial arts title defense match, which his fighter went on to win.

But a chance meeting with a high school assistant wrestling coach prompted Schirmer, a former all-American wrestler, to step forward in the aftermath of a tragedy: the Feb. 14 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in nearby Parkland, Florida, where 17 people, including the school’s wrestling coach, were killed.

Schirmer, who teaches mixed martial arts at Combat-Do training centers at 413 S. Main St. in Princeton and also in Cicero, volunteered his coaching services for several days for the Parkland wrestling team, whose members, gearing up for the postseason district tournament, had just tragically lost their coach, Chris Hixon.

“When you see something like that, you want to help,” Schirmer said. “Everybody wants to help out in some kind of way, in any kind of way they can.”

Assistant Coach Daniel Sanchez gladly accepted, and Schirmer came to his first practice, which was conducted away from the school that was still sealed off after the tragedy.

The Parkland wrestlers were understandably shocked and saddened by the shootings.

“You could feel the sullenness, it permeated throughout,” Schirmer said.

But they still needed to practice and lose weight in advance of the district meet, which was postponed until Feb. 21 due to the tragedy, and Schirmer was called on to give them a pep talk.

“So I told them, I said, I’m an old wrestler, I’ve been wrestling all my life. I know what you guys are going through cutting weight and how nervous you get before districts,” he said.

“But what happened to you guys is a tragedy, and I’m going to call you accountable,” he continued.

“I want you guys, you’re the warriors of the school, you’re the tough guys, you’re the wrestlers, nobody bullies the wrestlers, and I said, and I’d like you wrestlers to become the leaders of the school.

“When you see a kid sitting all by himself, being rejected from everyone else, I want you to go and make friends with that kid.

Once you make friends with a kid that’s all by himself, now you’re his hero. And you should be his hero, and you should guide the kids that are bullied, you should be the heroes for them, and be a hero, because there’s no better feeling than saving someone from whatever.”

Other coaches also pitched in to help at the several practices Schirmer attended, lasting two to three hours each, before he returned to Illinois on Feb. 18.

Schirmer said he’d received a call from Assistant Coach Sanchez earlier that day thanking him for being there.

“He said I helped get the kids’ heads together and get around this craziness,” Schirmer said.

“I was just glad to be there. I just went, and it was the right thing to do.”

Schirmer said he has seen violence and its aftermath in the past as a Marine recon ranger and

undercover policeman.

“I know that when you’re in that mourning type thing, from seeing things that are horrific, the only way to get beyond that is to put experiences in between it. If you turn into a shell, you’re never going to get out of it,” he said.

“Even though it’s hard to say, you’ve got to get up and pull yourself up by your bootstraps and just keep going forward. But you’ve got to be positive.”

PRINCETON — Dan Laib will present “The Magic and Art Show” at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, in the Matson Meeting Room at the Princeton Public Library.

This is an all-ages program aimed at families looking for an outing on the Casimir Pulaski school holiday. No registration is required for this event.

Laib combines magic tricks, optical illusions, and live art to challenge and entertain the mind. Audience members will be amused and amazed as their minds play tricks on them in the process of learning about the human brain. They will be challenged to view the world with

new eyes as they learn about how the mind works, grows and can be cultivated. Laib also demonstrates the thought process of an artist as live caricature and painting are a part of the show.

The show is 45 minutes in length.

Laib first started drawing when he was 5 years old, and has spent the last 15 years as a painter and also performing as a caricature artist at different events, schools and libraries all over the Chicagoland area. He and his family live in Joliet.

Under the direction of Gene Montgomery, the ensemble includes IVCC students, local and regional music educators and community members dedicated to the promotion of quality wind and percussion music.

SPRING VALLEY — Lego Play is a new program for children ages 8-16 to create masterpieces with Legos. Legos will be provided by the library. Any child under 7 must be accompanied by an adult and will be given Duplo blocks to build with during the program,

4-H clay workshop will be offered on March 18 at Annie’s Little Pots PRINCETON — 4-H and Annie’s Little Pots will be teaming up to provide a workshop opportunity for Bureau County youth.

Participants will work on a wheel formed clay project led by Ann Crosby, as well as exploration of hand formed clay with retired art teacher Kathy Ballard. Those enrolled in 4-H visual arts projects will be able to enter their creations at the 4-H Fair in July.

The workshop will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18,

Illinois Valley Community College plans agriculture open house

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its second Agriculture Spring Open House for all prospective students and parents from 7:45 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 2.

Guests will interact with current IVCC students and faculty, hear an overview on the revitalized program, tour campus and participate in an activity in the ag lab. Enrollment, financial aid and scholarship

information will also be provided.

In less than two years, the program led by instructor Willard Mott has grown to over 30 students taking at least one ag course. Four classes were offered this spring and 10 will be offered in fall.

ST. BEDE BRUINS TO HOST SPRING TRAINING PERU — The St. Bede Academy baseball program will present the Spring Training Baseball Clinic March 3 and March 10-11 for boys ages 6-14. SBA head coach Bill Booker and his staff along with Bruins players will offer instruction on the fundamentals of the game, including hitting, fielding, pitching, catching and throwing.

Weather permitting, some drills may at the academy field.

Session I will be for ages 6-8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 3.

Session II will be for ages 9-11 from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 10.

Session III will be for ages 12-14 from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 11.

SPRING VALLEY — Diggersz Volleyball, a Spring Valley-based club, is looking for 14U players (seventh-eighth grade) interested in playing the upcoming club season.

The club is low cost (under $500) for the entire season. There will be five tournaments scheduled on Sundays with one practice a week with other nights of practice dedicated to specific talents.

Girls Scouts make survival kits for law enforcement officers

Sergeant Chris Erickson and Officer Adam Gutshall of the Princeton Police Department met with the Junior Girl Scouts of Girl Scouts of Central Illinois (GSCI) Service Area 30 on Jan. 21. As part of their Junior Agent of Change Journey, the girls made 40 survival kits for law enforcement officers. The girls read the survival kit contents to the officers and sent the survival kits off to share with the Princeton Police Department and the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department. The Service Area 30 Planning Committee hosted the “Journey in a Day” event, which was attended by 13 Brownies, 20 Juniors and nine Cadette Girl Scouts.

HENRY — River Valley Players will host an acting workshop with Shannon Hill on Saturday, March 17, at St. John XXIII Community Center, 1301 Second St. in Henry.

They will offer two three-hour workshops. The first workshop, for ages 9 to 12, will be from 9 a.m. to noon; the second, for ages 13 through adults, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per person.

The class outline will be: • Intro To Stage and Theatre Basics, Blocking, Countering, Basic Theatre Terms.

• Acting Basics, Emotion and Physicality, Action/Objective Work.

• Character Voice and Physicality, Open Scenes.

• Stage Combat Basics (stage falls, shove, slap, punch, hair/ear pulls, etc.).

Hill is the former artistic director with Festival 56 in Princeton.
