Something’s fishy here St. Louis Catholic School in Princeton is becoming quite well known for its annual Lenten fish fry, held every Friday, beginning after Ash Wednesday through March 27. At right, Bill Uher (left) and Richard Krasko prepare some of the fried fish last Friday afternoon, which was served at the Friday event. The meal includes all-you-can-eat fried or baked fish with all the trimmings, including a drink and dessert, for $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The event runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. every Friday.

This Week The Bureau County Open Door 4-H Club will host its annual chili and soup supper from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Princeton.

The Easter Seals of LaSalle and Bureau Counties will host the sixth annual Black and White Ball Saturday, Feb. 28, at Senica’s Oak Ridge. Starved Rock Visitors Center will host a program about the invasive Asian Carp and their distinguishing characteristics at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1.

Brennan Caputo, natural resources coordinator for the IDNR, will discuss why they are such a problem and what the Department of Natural Resources is doing to control the movement and population of Asian Carp.

The Tampico Lions Club will host its annual pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at the Tampico Elementary Grade School.

The menu includes pancakes, whole hog sausage, scrambled eggs, orange juice, milk, coffee and water. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Illinois Valley Community College’s Diversity Team and Student Government Association will host internationally-renowned human rights activist Jimmie Briggs as its keynote speaker for Women’s History Month. Briggs, founder of the Man-Up Campaign, will present from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Monday, March 2, in IVCC’s Cultural Center. He is an advocate for women’s rights and empowerment, and he encourages men to speak out against violence against women.

A cash bar will also be available.

Door prizes will be awarded each hour, and a 50/50 raffle will be available.

Community members are encouraged to join the Dear Soldier letter collection campaign sponsored by the Bureau County Republican. A collection box is located in the library. The letters collected will be included in care packages sent to veterans and military service members all over the world.

Field Museum displays viking exhibit CHICAGO — What does the word Viking bring to mind? Ruthless warriors and merciless invaders?

Or prosperous farmers, enterprising merchants and caring families?

Vikings, the latest exhibition at The Field Museum, explores the truth behind Scandinavia’s ancient — and infamous — seafaring raiders.

Opening Friday, Feb. 27, and running through Sunday, Oct. 4, The Field Museum’s presentation of Vikings is the only United States stop on an international tour. The exhibition was organized by the Swedish History Museum in Sweden, in partnership with MuseumsPartner in Austria.

The exhibition transports visitors to the Viking Age brought to light through modern archaeological discoveries. Nearly 500 ancient artifacts — many never before seen outside of Scandinavia — reveal new insights into the legendary people characterized as heartless marauders.

Artifacts on display in the exhibition reveal glimpses into family and community, religion and rituals, travel and trade, aristocracy and slavery and the roles of women.

The exhibition provides insight into the significance of Norse craftsmanship, the power of their mythology, and the symbolism of their ships.

A highlight of the exhibition is the Krampmacken, a replica Viking ship from Sweden based on historical and archaeological sources.

The exhibition will also explore some of the misconceptions surrounding these early Scandinavians.

Though there is a Viking helmet replica in the exhibition, visitors won’t find any horned helmets on display. In fact, no Viking helmet has ever been discovered with horns; this image emerged in the 19th century, popularized by authors and artists

Viking facts Vikings were never part of a unified group • Between 790-1066 AD, the area now known as Denmark, Norway and Sweden were inhabited by a mixture of tribes that often fought one another, meaning they weren’t unified under one lifestyle or leader.

Not all Vikings were warriors • Most Vikings carried scythes, not swords.

While many men did in fact sail the seas and raid and trade with villages far away, most worked on farms either tending to cattle, pigs, and sheep or sowing crops in the field to provide for their families.

No horns on Viking helmets • Although horned helmets have come to symbolize the Viking Age, this representation is historically inaccurate. The Romantic Age popularized the stereotypical Viking when one of the villains in Richard Wagner’s opera, The Ring Cycle, wore a horned helmet as part of his costume. None of the ancient helmets discovered show any evidence of horns.

Generally, the people of early Scandinavia named themselves after the farm, village or region in which they lived. The word “Viking,” derives from Old Norse, and meant a trade ship or a raid. During the Viking era, people were not always out on these expeditions; most lived as farmers, merchants, and craftsmen.

Striking examples of Viking craftsmanship are on display including exquisitely wrought brooches, depictions of Norse gods, as well as gold and silver pendants—including the oldest known Scandinavian crucifix, highlighting the transition between Old Norse religious practices and Christianity. Viking Age swords and other weapons will also be on display, highlighting the Vikings’ exceptional metal working technologies.

Vikings features a number of interactives, allowing museum visitors to take part in the excavation of a virtual boat grave, spell a name in runes, explore Norse

mythology and play an early Scandinavian board game. Visitors can pick up an accurate replica of a Viking Age sword and test the weight and balance between handle and blade, discovering the skill it takes to master sword handling.

Vikings brings a new appreciation for the people remembered mainly for their plundering ways. And while raiding and pillaging were mainstays of their culture, Viking society was much more complex and multifaceted; Vikings were skilled craftsmen, successful merchants and hard-working farmers.

Like society today, no one thing defined the Vikings, and research continues to teach us how nuanced these northern people were.

Food, drinks, fun Pagan O’Leary’s serves up a tasty combination

GRANVILLE — It takes the right combination of skill and leadership to succeed in any endeavor. If all the pieces aren’t in place, the end result isn’t going to work. Pagan O’Leary’s first opened its doors in 2005, but it wasn’t until Russell Guynn reopened the doors on Dec. 4, 2010, that the public house became the attraction it is now.

From the moment you see the front of the building at 304 S. McCoy St., Granville, you know it’s a bit out of the ordinary.

The top floor of the exterior is painted bright yellow, with the ground floor a fire engine red trimmed in the same yellow swatches.

Inside, the barroom is comfortable with oddly high ceilings; the building used to be a hardware shop, and goods were stacked high to take up less space. Memorabilia from bar decor history can be found everywhere you look, including behind the bar where you’ll find an antique Hamm’s sign that still cycles through its panoramic graphic. The location behind the beer taps is not a mistake; Guynn is a big fan of the “Hamm’s Bear,” and features him as the bar’s unofficial mascot.

“Who doesn’t love the ‘Hamm’s Bear?’ He was always a fun guy in the commercials,” Guynn said. “I want people to know this is a fun place to go and enjoy yourself.”

The menu is big ... as is the food on it. Homemade soups, salads, burgers, pasta, ribs and chicken all vie for your attention with a list of tasty appetizers and side dishes that’s sure to make you happy. Pagan O’Leary’s is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and the kitchen is fired up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Although Pagan’s has always had a kitchen, Guynn recently added a dining room next door.

“I own Waterstreet Pub in Peru, and I had some people say they came here to drink but they drove to Peru to eat because they

didn’t want to eat in a bar atmosphere,” Guynn said.

“So I figured, why make them drive? When Arch Hopkins moved into his new place, I bought his offices and turned them into a dining room with a couple of small club rooms.”

Lunches are popular at Pagan O’Leary’s, not just for the good food but the daytime bartender, according to Guynn.

“Courtney (Christensen) is phenomenal. She’s

friendly and knows everybody’s name,” Guynn said.

“One of the first things I did was get her back into the building. It wouldn’t be Pagan’s without her.”

A burning question is, “Who is Pagan O’Leary?”

According to the restaurant’s website, he actually existed. His story: “Pagan O’Leary is named for Patrick ‘Pagan’ O’Leary, a Fenian who gave up his Christian name of Patrick in favor of not accepting any religion. The British, who were particularly fun-loving and tolerant at the time, incarcerated Pagan O’Leary in the paradoxically named Mountjoy Prison in 1865, after he criticized them in The Irish People newspaper.”

In time for National Nutrition Month, Jimenez is offering a few ways you can “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle,” the theme of this year’s annual focus on nutrition.

• Make informed food choices: A healthy lifestyle is about so much more than just choosing to eat more fruits and vegetables.

While this is important, it’s also essential to make informed food choices based on your individual health and nutrient needs.

Knowing which nutrients your body needs, the foods that contain them, and how much fits into your healthy eating plan, are all part of making smart choices. A registered dietitian nutritionist can educate you and guide your food choices while keeping your tastes and preferences in mind.

• Choose sensible snacks: Sensible snacks are a part of any healthful eating plan. If you choose carefully and plan ahead, snacks can prevent overeating at mealtimes and throughout the day. For children and adults, alike, snacks can supply foods and nutrients that we might miss in meals. Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole-grains and low-fat dairy foods.

• Get plenty of physical activity: Daily physical activity is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle, and unfortunately most Americans don’t include enough exercise in their daily rou-

In preparation for a big party or feast, do not skip meals throughout the day. This may result in overeating later. Make sure to eat a breakfast high in fiber and protein.

To avoid overeating at a buffet-style meal, use a smaller plate. It will encourage proper portion sizes. Also, start by filling your plate with vegetables and salad before going to the entrees and desserts.

Research shows eating a salad before your meal can help you eat fewer calories overall. Eat slowly and savor every bite.

Before you go back for seconds, wait 10 minutes to see if you really are still hungry.

Including nutrient-rich foods in your diet is great, just remember that these foods have calories too, which should be taken into consideration with your whole eating plan.

Remember to include at least 30 minutes of physical activity into your day.

The Eagles are 14-16 overall and finished 5-7 in the Arrowhead Conference. IVCC is seeded seventh in District A while Morton is the two seed in District B. The Eagles defeated Morton 79-77 at IVCC Jan. 10.

Swing into Spring PERU — New coach Bill Booker and the St. Bede Academy Bruins’ baseball program will host a Spring Training Baseball Clinic on Saturday, March 7 to Sunday, March 8.

Sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon March 7 for ages 7-9 and from 1 to 4 p.m. March 8 for ages 10-14.

Participants will learn baseball fundamentals from SBA coaches and players. Campers may bring their own equipment and are expected to wear proper baseball attire.

Weather permitting, some drills may be at the Academy field.
