Something’s fishy at St. Louis John Ruiz lays out pieces of fish that will eventually be baked for the St. Louis School Fish Fry, held every Friday during the Lenten season. The all-you-caneat fish dinner includes fried or baked fish with all the fixings, plus a dessert and drink. The price for adults is $9; children 4-12 years old is $5; and children 3 and under eat free.

The event is held in the St. Louis School gym, located at 631 Park Ave. West in Princeton, and is held every Friday through March 18.

Welcome to Waterfront Tavern

HENNEPIN — For almost two years, a popular riverfront destination in Hennepin has been closed. However, Ray’s Place, a fixture of Hennepin for six decades, is now re-opening under new ownership and a new name, Waterfront Tavern. It’s sure to be a popular attraction this summer with boaters, bikers and anyone looking to enjoy Hennepin’s scenic view of the Illinois River.

New owner Greg Waldorf, a Putnam County native, has made many changes, but he’s kept what made it popular, and he’s added or will be adding several changes which will only make it more appealing. Waldorf, along with his family, has been a part of the tavern/restaurant business for 38 years. His parents own Jim and Jane’s Tap in Peru. Jim and Jane’s is well known for their fried chicken, as was Ray’s Place, and Waldorf made an interesting discovery after the purchase of Ray’s.

“It’s the same exact recipe as my grandpa’s (recipe). All the old Italians had the same wet batter recipe,” said Waldorf.

The interior of Waterfront Tavern has undergone some updates, but it’s maintained its classic, early ‘50s charm. The bar area is now a deep red, and the dining area which was salmon pink is now a distinguished gray, and Japanese screens have been placed in front of the full salad bar. Behind the scenes, the kitchen is undergoing a remodel. Traditional tavern-style dinners will be served on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

“We’ll have a Bluegill platter, gizzards and livers, fried chicken, pastas and the salad bar,” Waldorf said.

Greg Waldorf, who became the new owner of the former Ray’s Place on Dec. 18, is ready to welcome patrons to his restaurant, Waterfront Tavern. The decor and amenities have been updated and improved, but the same classic tavern food will still be available. they can do a Power Point presentation or whatever they need,” said Waldorf.

There are also two new televisions above the bar. Waldorf has doubled his draft beer selection as well.

Waldorf has plans for entertainment as well as food. Along with hosting live music, there will be a back room with five video gaming machines, a video golf game and dart boards. He has additional plans for a fenced rear patio with bags games, and a front patio with tables and chairs, so guests can relax outside and enjoy the weather and view of the river.

“We plan on catering to the boats and bikes crowd,” said Waldorf.

Waldorf was quick to acknowledge all the help, support and encouragement he’s received during the entire re-opening process.

“My wife and sister-in-law did most of the painting, and Ken Lamchik of River Valley Chiropractic donated the art work and animal displays. Everyone in Hennepin and Putnam County has been fantastic and very supportive,” said Waldorf.

The tavern is opening on Friday, Feb. 19, and the restaurant is expected to open within a couple of weeks. Until the restaurant portion is open, hours of operation will be 10 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. For more information, call 815-925-3055.

The ninth annual Nothing’s Sweeter than a Child Chocolate Festival is coming up on Sunday, March 6, at Celebrations 150 on Route 6, Utica, and east of LaSalle.

LaSalle County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will sponsor the event to benefit its child advocacy and volunteer driven program serving neglected and abused children in LaSalle County. With chocolate as its theme, the CASA charity event

will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. But that’s not all ...

As CASA’s signature event and only fundraiser, CASA will also be celebrating its “Sweet 16th anniversary as a friend of the court and non-profit organization.

“Yes, chocolate is the draw, but the message is to emphasize there is no excuse for child abuse; that persons attending this event are supportive of children’s rights and best interests. Attendees, like our volunteers, are willing to stand up and say ‘I am for the child,’” said Jill Bernal, festival co-chair.

With 20 generous chocolateurs, confectioners and bakers from all over the Illinois Valley, the tastings are representative of their business, each of which supports the mission of CASA to advocate for children.

When attendees aren’t dripping in chocolate, they can browse and bid on more than 150 auction items some of which are in the live auction chanted by the Bullock brothers of Bullock Auctioneers.

Throughout the three-hour event, patrons can listen to the sweet sounds of acoustic guitarist Steve Sharp.

Topics that will be discussed include getting to know a Smartphone, Wi-Fi and how to connect, basic phone set-up and overview, email, picture messaging, voicemail, the app store and how to download apps, button configurations and fun tips and tricks.

OHIO — Saturday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m., the library will host a youth program on Chinese Lunar New Year. There will be a “lion” that kids can help operate, as well as an opportunity to make their own ink.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 9:30

a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — Patrons are invited to stop by the library to see the new display setup by Gene and Arlene Henrikson that showcases semi-precious stone birds from Sao Paulo, Brazil. All the birds are hand-carved from Amethyst and Quartz.

The library is also collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. The library receives up to $4 for each cartridge recycled. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off. Large laser cartridges are not accepted through this program and will not fit through the holes of the collection box.

A ‘Night of Conservation’ planned in Henry HENRY — A “Night of Conservation” is planned for Thursday, March 3, at the University of Illinois Marshall-Putnam Extension Office is Henry.

The public is invited to join Pheasants Forever, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau, Natural Resources Conservation Service and University of Illinois Extension to learn about conservation topics to improve habitat for landowners and for wildlife.

Daryle Wragge, Extension agriculture program coordinator, encourages all to participate in this special evening. “We have great speakers lined up who can help you think about and plan for improvements that will enhance wildlife in our area now and for the future. We hope you will join us for this free evening of education and discussion.”

Highlighted topics for the evening

include: Importance of Maintaining and Enhancing Wildlife in Our Communities, Peggy Doty, Extension educator; Environmental and Energy Stewardship; Conservation Reserve Program Options/Soil and Water Conservation Practices to Enhance Wildlife Habitat, Erika Turner, district conservationist; and Bird and Habitat Enhancement Programs Available, Doug Gass, Pheasants Forever Farm Bill biologist.

Freezer meal prep event set for March 21

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau will host a freezer meal pre-event at 6 p.m. Monday, March 21, at the Bureau County Farm Bureau.

Getting ready for the busy spring planting season can be hectic, so let’s start preparing now. Join us for a fun evening of meal prep.

The cost is $150, and you get 10 meals. Each meal feeds about five people.

Here is how it works: You will register with the Farm Bureau office in order to attend.

On March 21, you will bring a laundry bas-

ket and prepare for the fun. The Prep Cook Freeze company will bring all the containers and ingredients. Everyone in attendance will join together to prepare the meals. In less than two hours you will head for home with 10 meals ready for the freezer.

Spring preparation can’t get much easier.

This event is held as a Foundation fundraiser, raising money to help support the Bureau County Ag in the Classroom Program.

SPRINGFIELD — The summer concert season kicks off with a bang on June 17 when Chase Rice takes the stage at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Multi-Purpose Arena. Jon Pardi returns to the fairgrounds for this amazing concert.

Rice got his start in country music as a songwriter.

He will forever be linked to one of the biggest country chart singles in Billboard music history. Rice is one of the co-writers of Florida Georgia Line’s megahit “Cruise.” Now, setting off into new territory as a recording artist, Rice is rising in popularity with his hit song, “Ready, Set, Roll.”

Joining Rice on stage will be Jon Pardi. She is best known for songs, “Up All Night,” “Head Over Boots” and “What I Can’t Put Down.” Pardi most recently played at the Illinois State Fair in August 2015, opening for Justin Moore.

Attorney General highlights safer Internet Day CHICAGO — Attorney General Lisa Madigan recently recognized 2016 Safer Internet Day by urging parents and educators to help students adopt healthy online habits.

To coincide with this year’s theme, “Play Your Part for a Better Internet,” the Attorney General’s Office is encouraging educators to hold a “Secure It Day” for students to take inventory of online accounts and address vulnerable areas.

“We all know that our children are spending more time connected to the Internet, whether they are playing games or using

social media,” said Madigan. “Safer Internet Day is a good opportunity to make sure students are being smart about what they post and who they interact with when they are online.”

Madigan recommended parents and teachers help youth take steps to make sure personal information is secure online: • Change user names that contain personal information; • Create strong passwords; • Turn on privacy settings; • Remove unknown friends and followers;

• Never share passwords or account information; • Be cautious if solicited for private information; • Connect to trusted networks and websites; and • Keep firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus programs current.

During the spring of 2014, the Attorney General’s office conducted a survey of more than 800 Illinois students in Grades 3 through 8 to determine how they are using technology and social media.

The results showed the average child creates his or her first social networking account at 10

years old, even though social networking sites require users to be at least 13 years old to create accounts. While 70 percent of youth in the survey acknowledged their postings to social media and other websites can impact their futures, more than 60 percent said they are not concerned with the amount of personal information they make available online. Additionally, 40 percent of thirdthrough eighth-graders believe they should be the only person to check their online and mobile activity.

On Safer Internet Day,

Madigan encouraged parents and teachers to talk to youth about their online connections, followers and posts, and promote safety and respect on the Internet. Madigan’s office has generated new and updated resources for students, families and educators to support positive digital choices. These resources are available on the Attorney General’s Stay Connected, Stay Informed website.

Green your office — join the challenge CHAMPAIGN – Registration is now open for the 2016 Illinois Green Office Challenge (IGOC), a friendly competition to see which Illinois organization can accumulate the most points by conserving energy and water, reducing waste and saving money.

The competition will launch with a kickoff and informational session at 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), 1 Hazelwood Drive, Champaign.

Last year, the Challenge began in the Central Illinois communities of Champaign-Urbana, Peoria and Bloomington-Normal. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Construction Engineering and Research Laboratory in Champaign was the highest scorer in the region. This year offices statewide are encour-

aged to sign up.

Contestants can start piling up points Tuesday, March 1, as they begin to score points for completing specific sustainability activities at their facilities.

Money-saving ideas and assistance will be provided

by ISTC, a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Challenge website provides participants with the information and tools they need to compete and complete activities, and a live leaderboard will track their scores, as well as those of other competitors from across the state.

At the end of the Challenge, participants will be acknowledged for their hard work through media, peer recognition, and yearend awards. The Challenge welcomes all public and private buildings that are

used primarily for office space.

Kinzinger announces Congressional Art Competition WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) has announced his office has officially started accepting submissions for the 2016 Congressional Art Competition.

“This competition showcases the incredible talent and creativity of our young people — and I am always impressed with the great work we receive,” said Kinzinger.

“Each year it seems like the quantity and quality of submissions gets increasingly greater, so I am really looking forward to this year’s competition.”

Each spring, since 1982, the U.S. House of Representatives offers talented young artists from across the country an opportunity to showcase their artistic abilities.

The winning pieces will be selected by a panel of local art experts and social media votes. The first place pieces of artwork are displayed in a year-long exhibit spanning along the walls of the Cannon

tunnel that leads to the U.S. Capitol Building. And the three runner-up pieces will be displayed in the Congressman’s district offices.

In addition to having their art displayed, the first place winner will also be awarded two tickets to Washington, D.C., to attend the official art show opening and a reception hosted by the Congressional Institute. The Congressman will host an earlier reception in his district office for students and their families to view the submitted artwork and for the announcement of the winners.

The submission deadline is 5 p.m. (CT) Friday, April 15, in the Ottawa district office. All high school students within Illinois’ 16th district are eligible to participate. PRINCETON — The Princeton Chamber Ambassador Golf Outing will be Friday, May 13. It is a team event with many sponsorship opportunities available.

PERU — The St. Bede Bruins baseball team will hold its Spring Training Baseball Clinic in March. Session 1 for ages 6-8 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 5. Session II for ages 9-11 will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6.

Session III for ages 12-14 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 12.

Instructors for the clinic will be St. Bede coaches and players, headed by varsity coach Bill Booker. Participants will learn baseball fundamentals for the upcoming season. Sessions will focus on hitting, field, throwing, bunting, pitch and catching skills.

Early registration postmarked by Feb. 25 is $30 for first child and $25 for each additional sibling. Fees are $35 after Feb. 25 or at the door.

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 23rd annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 27-28 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grade 7-8 brackets Feb. 27 and in the Grade 5-6 brackets Feb. 28. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6

p.m. throughout both days. In addition, a 3-point shot and Hot Shot competition will be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day. Tournament T-shirts can be purchased at all admission gates.

YORKVILLE – The Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge will take place Sunday, March 6 with Special Olympics athletes jumping into the waters of Loon Lake in Yorkville.

The funds raised from the event will benefit Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities in 7 counties.

All Polar Plungers are required to collect a minimum of $100 in donations. Checkin begins at 11 a.m. Plunge souvenirs are available for purchase in advance of the Plunges at http://www.shopsoill.org/ or can be purchased on-site at the Plunge location.

People are encouraged to come in costume and to form teams. Each team member must also raise the minimum of $100 in donations; all team members’ individual fundraising totals will be merged to form a combined team total. Statewide, teams are placed into divisions based on size and are awarded prizes for the most money raised.

In addition, there is a Cool School Challenge (for junior/senior high schools), Collegiate Cup (for universities and colleges) and a Corporate Challenge (for businesses).

Each Plunger receives an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt. There are also incentive items for raising more money with grand prizes, including a seven night trip for two adults to Riu Palace Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. For every $500 a plunger raises, he/she will get an entry into the drawing for this grand prize.
