HENNEPIN CANAL VISITORS CENTER

Lots of ‘hundreds’ from supporters $5,000 check will help to buy, install new planks for canal bridge

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com SHEFFIELD — Funds raised from the Hennepin Hundred ultra-marathon event held in October were recently donated to Illinois Department of Natural Resources for needed bridge repair at the Hennepin Canal Visitors Center in rural Sheffield.

Michele Hartwig, race director and founder, presented a $5,000 check, which will be used for repairing planks on the bridge.

According to Tom Vandermore, IDNR site supervisor, the planks most likely have never been replaced — not in the past 37 years, at least — which is how long he’s been supervisor of the area.

The state of Illinois has allocated funds for the project; however, the donation will help offset the cost, which is not yet known. The project is expected to be underway this summer.

The Hennepin Hundred is an alltrail ultra marathon that begins in Sterling and ends in Colona. The 50-mile marker is in Wyanet.

Hartwig founded the race in 2015 as a way to grow awareness of the Hennepin Canal and its assets.

“Growing awareness of the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is the mission,” Hartwig said. “We work to grow our volunteer support to ensure our runners are well cared for. The race entry fees will eventually support the race, but right now it’s a donation from the race and runners Stormy Kies, Lauren Wills and Bill Pomerenke’s fundraising efforts, who all believe in the canal and in the cause of the race.”

According to Cathy Foes, a volunteer of the race and advocate of the Hennepin Canal, the multipurpose trail was built with federal funds and got caught politically between George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich.

There was never an announcement or ceremony of the trail completion in 2004.

Foes said while IDNR never educated towns along the way on how to use it to their benefit to draw tourists to the area, it still manages to attract many visitors from all over.

The Hennepin Hundred is just one weekend event, but has brought ultra marathoners and their supporters from five countries and 26 states around the U.S. The race has more than 400 entries.

Hartwig believes it’s important to bring awareness to Illinois’ lon-

gest trail.

“The state has not budgeted adequate funding for its upkeep. The waterway and trail are both in need of repair in order to be around for our children and grandchildren to enjoy it,” she said. “What we can do to help is work together to draw local, national and international attention to this corridor.

This helps decision-makers take notice.”

Hartwig said because of the attention the Hennepin Hundred race has brought to the corridor, decision-makers are taking more notice, and projects that were once put on hold are now getting done.

“We all can do a little bit at a time

and eventually make a difference.

The volunteers, runners, families that come out on race day are making a huge impact in protecting and saving this very special corridor,” she said.

Hartwig urges local runners to look into the event, but said people don’t have to be runners to take part in it.

“The most important help the race needs is volunteers on race day. It’s very rewarding to do this, and we welcome groups or individuals to get involved,” she said.

The next Hennepin Hundred event will be held Oct. 6-7. More information can be found at hennepinhundred.com.

MANLIUS — Sorority sisters and Harvard law students will soon descend upon the auditorium of Bureau Valley High School in Manlius to present “Legally Blonde, the Musical.”

Based on the popular movie starring Reese Witherspoon, “Legally Blonde” follows the story of Elle Woods as she chases the man of her dreams to Harvard.

While there, she overcomes challenges and stereotypes, saves a fel-

low Delta Nu, and finds out that the man of her dreams might not be the one she expected.

Full of upbeat music and high energy dance numbers, this musical is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

“Legally Blonde, the Musical” will run Friday, March 9, and Saturday March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bureau Valley High School auditorium.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students.

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — The Flying Tigers engineering club at Princeton High School has once again soared above and beyond, winning the Real World Design Challenge state competition for the fourth time.

The students will now go on to compete at the national level in Washington, D.C., this spring against schools from all over the world.

The engineering club at PHS has generated so much interest over the years, it was able to put together a second team, known as Aviation X, which took second place in the Real World Design Challenge.

The event is an annual competition that gives high school and STEM school students opportunities to work on engineering problems. The teams are given a real challenge facing industries and are tasked with utilizing professional engineering software to develop a solution.

This year, the students designed a multipurpose drone that could be used by farmers to survey and spray a two-by-two-mile crop during early infestation testing.

The engineering club met nearly every morning before school and even spent some of their Christmas break working on the project before it was sent off to be judged.

With this being the fourth year the club has been named state winners, Conner Colmone, a junior on the team, said the secret to success is just like with anything else.

“If you want to be good at it, you just have to put in the time,” he said.

PHS Industrial Technology teacher Tim Ciesielski oversees the club and is proud of the teams’ accomplishments.

“I’ve got a good group of kids.

I’ve got kids you can trust. They’re smart, they work hard, and they dedicate themselves to what’s going on,” he said.

Ciesielski said the challenge allows them to take what they’ve learned in physics and math and apply it to the real world.

“In math class you’re just given a bunch of problems, but in this you work on a big problem that requires a bunch of smaller problems to complete it,” he said.

Leading up to the national competition in April, the Flying Tigers will be tweaking their design and putting together a presentation all members of the club will have to give to live judges.

The team members say they’re also putting a strong focus on time management, which is something

they lacked at their last competition.

With this being the second national challenge for most of the team members, they feel their past expe-

rience with competing will be to their advantage this time around.

Knowing what to expect and how to handle the process more efficiently will be allow them to be more competitive this year.

The team members of the winning national team will be awarded a $50,000 scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The library has been hosting a class on self-publishing, books, poetry, etc., on the second Tuesday each month at 1 p.m. So all aspiring authors and poets, come on out and see how to get those books out to the adoring public.

The library has a book group that has been meeting for 18 years. The group meets and discusses a vast array of authors and subjects. February’s book, “The Girl Before” by JP Delaney, is a psychological thriller with many twists and turns and deals with death and deception. The group will meet next at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. The public is welcome to join.

LAMOILLE — The library will be holding two children’s book award programs on Saturday, Feb. 24. At 10:30 a.m., the library will host a Monarch Award story hour for children in grades kindergarten through third grade. The group will read several of the award-nominated titles and then vote for its favorites.

After the Monarch Award story hour, the library will host a pizza party for children in grades fourth to eighth who have read at least three books nominated for this year’s Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award. The nominees will be discussed during pizza before favorites are voted on.

BUDA — The library is open 1 to 5 p.m. Monday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday; 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; closed Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and closed Sunday.

Shartzer is a Garth Brooks tribute musician. He will be performing favorite hits like “The Dance,” “The Thunder Rolls,” “American Honky Tonk Bar Association” and “Friends in Low Places.”

Shartzer is a recording artist at Shock City Studios in St. Louis.

Together with the Ropin’ the Wind Band he is considered the closest thing to an actual Garth Brooks show. The show will begin at 6 p.m.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigers Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 25th annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 24-25 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grades 7-8 brackets Saturday and in the Grades 5-6 brackets Sunday.
