The style show will include red fashions from a number of local retailers, including Four Seasons, Juniper & Mae, Milk Moustache, The Villager, Sassy Sisters, Cabbage Rose, Rue 21, Christopher & Banks, CJ Banks, Maurices, Tri City Frock Shoppe and many more.

Welcome to Perry Memorial Prompt Care Integration promises more access to care PRINCETON — Princeton Prompt Care will be integrating with Perry Memorial Hospital, and the clinic’s new name will be Perry Memorial Prompt Care.

Rex Conger, president and CEO of Perry Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Paul Bonucci, founder and owner of Princeton Prompt Care, are combining their resources to offer additional access to more health care options within the area.

“We have a long history of working together and cooperating to provide the best care and service to the patients in our community,” said Conger.

Bonucci will remain the medical director of the clinic and continue to be responsible for the reputation of quality care and customer service. Bonucci, a graduate of Princeton High School and Northwestern University Medical School, completed his residency at Cook County Hospital and is board certified in emergency medicine.

Bonucci held the rank of major while in the Army and held a variety of leadership positions.

Patients will continue to see the same friendly faces of the current staff during the clinic hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Documentary of World War II vets seeks funding

SENECA — “The Last Signal” is a new documentary in the final stages of production. It tells the story of Raymond “De Vere” Johnson and John Heimsoth, World War II veterans who both served in the Navy aboard LST218. Johnson, 92, of Illinois and a signal man during his time in service, thought he was the last surviving crew member of the ship constructed at the Seneca Prairie Shipyard in Seneca, Ill. His daughter sought to prove him wrong.

Johnson’s daughter, Cheryl, posted on Facebook seeking other veterans of the ship. Within weeks, the post had more

than a million hits and had been shared worldwide. It also brought contact with Heimsoth, 91, of Stover, Mo. “The Last Signal” is a documentary which captures their reunion and shares their story, along with the history of the small town Illinois shipyard.

“When we came to Seneca to film and highlight the community’s contribution to the war effort, I was amazed at how well the community has kept its history alive and continues to celebrate its contribution to one of the most historic times in our nation’s history,” said producer Kyle Olson.

After the U.S. entered the war, defense manufacturing soon sky-rocketed.

The coastal shipyards were handling the large vessels such as aircraft carriers, battleships and destroyers, but the government looked inland for the production of smaller craft such as the LST, or Landing Ship Tank.

Situated on 200 acres on the bank of the Illinois River and on a bed of solid sandstone which could handle the 5,500 ton weight of the ships, the Seneca Prairie Shipyard was soon receiving accolades for their production rate.

Seneca was originally founded as a watering stop for the railroad. With approximately 1,200 residents at the beginning of the war, thousands of people relocated to the area with the arrival of the shipyard. This also brought about additional housing, better roads, utilities, sewer system and an expanded school. Approx-

imately 27,000 people worked at the yard during World War II. According to the Seneca Shipyard Days website, 16 different trades were required to construct each of the 157 LSTs built.

Skilled workers earned $1.20 an hour and laborers received .83 an hour. There were two, nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week.

The yard employed 11,000 people when fully staffed.

The first LST built in Seneca took six months and 880,000 man-hours to construct because the shipyard was still being constructed. The Chicago Bridge and Iron Co., owners of the shipyard, planned on one LST a week once everything was in place, but they were soon building seven a month with only 280,000 man-hours invested per ship. This production rate won the company and

their workers the coveted Army-Navy “E” award, presented to companies and workers for excellence in war production.

Once construction was complete, the ships were launched sideways into the Illinois River from one of the 15 berths that ran parallel to the river. Each ship had a female sponsor present at the launch, and as tradition goes, she broke a bottle of champagne over the bow. The shipyard kept track of the champagne used at the launches, and by the war’s end, 39 gallons of champagne had been spent.

The flat-bottomed ships were capable of transporting troops, tanks and supplies, and of delivering them directly onto the beach through two large doors in the hull.

Because of their travel into heavy combat areas, the 327-foot-long LSTs

weren’t expected to survive long, and few were given traditional names.

LST-218 earned four battle stars before being decommissioned.

Filming has been completed on the documentary, but funding is needed to complete the post-production work so the film can be released to a large viewing audience. The producers need to raise at least $5,000. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made through Hatchfund at www.hatchfund.org/ project/the_last_signal.

“Being able to capture the story of these two veterans who served together on this ship has been an honor. This is a story that needs to be shared with a mass audience. My hope is that contributions will be made to our Hatchfund effort, so we can get this documentary out into the world,” said Olson.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

PERU — Thursday, Feb. 18, 6:30 p.m., IVCC geology instructor Mike Philips will talk about Illinois Valley floods just in time for spring rains. Philips will also focus on how the geology of the area impacts the potential of flooding.

Tuesday, Feb. 23, Natalie Dejonghe will be at the library to show patrons how to download ebooks to their Kindle, tablet or other devices. She will also show how to search, borrow and download electronic books to devices. She will explain how to use different devices with eRead Illinois so patrons should being their tablet, Nook, Kindle or iPad for hands-on experience with the app and catalog. Patrons will need their library card to download ebooks.

Color Me Calm meets the second Tuesday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon.

Tasty Tuesdays, a threepart series on diet fads, portion distortion and label reading to improve eating habits is taught by Susan Glassman of the University of Illinois Extension.

‘The Last Five Years’ to be presented in Streator STREATOR — Community Players of Streator Inc. is pleased to announce Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years” will be presented Feb. 25-28 at Engle Lane Theatre, 1012 Columbus Road, Streator.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, through Saturday, Feb. 27, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28.

Under the direction of Samantha Farb, “The Last Five Years” in an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their 20s who fall in and out of love with each other over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once at their wedding in the middle of the show.

“The Last Five Years” was inspired by the author’s own failed marriage. His ex-wife threatened legal action on the grounds the story of the musical represented her relationship with Brown too closely. The show premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001 and was pro-

duced off-Broadway in 2002.

Cheyanne Geringer and Derek Zinke are featured in the roles of Cathy Hiatt and Jamie Wellerstein. Geringer has been involved at Engle Lane for 15 years and most recently played the role of Blanche Barrow in “Bonnie and Clyde.” Zinke, who has a BA in vocal performance and teaches music in Tinley Park, played the role of Marius in Engle Lane Theatre’s 2014 production of “Les Miserables.”

Stage 212 seeks directors for 2017 season LASALLE — Stage 212 in LaSalle is currently seeking submissions from directors for the 2017 season. The organization is seeking well-known, highly recognizable shows for the winter, spring, summer and fall slots, but will also entertain proposals for special “5th Show” productions, typically small cast and a little out of the ordinary, to run in a slot outside of the regular season.

Winter productions are typically small musicals or comedy/dramas, the spring and fall shows are comedy/dramas and the summer production is traditionally a big musical, but other proposals will be considered. The organization will consider all submissions, including repeats of past shows if they have not been performed in the last 20 years.

Sedaris to perform at The Orpheum GALESBURG — With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. Glen Gerrard has played a cast of characters throughout his career. Most recently, he will direct River Valley Players’ “Something’s Afoot,” a musical comedy murder mystery.

Glen Gerrard will direct ‘Something’s Afoot’ HENRY — Glen Gerrard will direct River Valley Players’ “Something’s Afoot,” a musical comedy murder mystery. Auditions were held at St. John’s Community Center, Henry, Jan. 24 and Jan. 26.

In this delightful spoof of classic Agatha Christie detective stories. the production is set in 1935 with a rousing Vaudeville style score; this suspenseful satire is a smashingly good time.

“When I read the script for this show, I was immediately drawn to it because it is really unlike any other show in that the set is actually the star of the show, and is such an interesting concept by combining light musical comedy with tonguein-cheek murder mystery,” Gerrard said.

River Valley Players production of “Something’s Afoot” marks designer/ director Glen Gerrard’s 51st year of theatre involvement, both on stage and behind the scenes. While a student at Illinois Valley Community College in

1968, he was hired as their set designer.

He attended Illinois State University on a scholarship, earning a degree in art with “emphasis in theatre and theatre design.”

Gerrard has designed sets and been involved in area community theaters as well as professional theatre productions.

Fish on Friday and religion events Musical meditations and luncheons PRINCETON — The Hampshire Colony Congregational Church in Princeton will host a series of Lenten noontime musical meditations and luncheons again this year. These meditations will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and continue for five consecutive Wednesdays through March 23.

The church is located at 604 S. Church St. in Princeton.

Walnut UMC will host Open Table WALNUT — Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Walnut United Methodist Church will begin hosting “The Open Table.”

The Open Table is a meal prepared and provided by the church, with no charge for those attending. The inspiration for the Open Table came out of discussions between church members about ways to give back to the people of Walnut.

Initially, meals will be served on the third Wednesday of each month between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (with the potential for weekly meals in the future). The church hopes to serve people of all ages and all neighborhoods.

It invites everyone in Walnut to attend not only for the physical nourishment found of the meal, but the soulful nourishment of community fellowship.

Meals will be served downstairs at the Walnut United Methodist Church. There is ample parking by the Jackson Street entrance. For those who need it, there is an elevator on the east side of the building (facing the fire station).

St. Matthews Lenten worship opportunities PRINCETON — St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Princeton invites all to attend Lenten services.

On Wednesdays during Lent, at 7 p.m., the theme will be “Clothes of Christ.” On Sundays during Lent, at 9 a.m., the theme will be “The Seven Faith Practices.”

On the five Wednesdays (Feb. 17 through March 16) at 7 p.m., five visiting pastors from area Lutheran congregations will share a message based on the “Clothes of Christ” theme.

Also, beginning Feb. 17, for the five Wednesdays, a soup supper will be served at 6 p.m. A free-will donation for the light meal is welcomed to support St. Matthews Youth and Family Ministry participation at Princeton Workcamp 2016.

The “Changed by Christ” theme will continue at St. Matthews for Maundy Thursday (March 24), Good Friday (March 25) and 7 a.m. Easter Sunrise Worship (March 27), with Pastor Schmidt sharing the message. On Good

Friday, the musicians of St. Matthews will share “The Clothes of Christ Cantata,” which musically recaps the midweek Lenten series.

Walnut Rotary offers seminar for students WALNUT — Walnut Rotary Club President Mark Harkness is encouraging Bureau Valley and Ohio high school students to apply for a full scholarship to attend the 2016 World Affairs Seminar to be held June 25 through July 1 at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. “Each year, Rotary’s World Affairs Seminar brings youth from around the world together to gain a new and unique perspective on current events,” Harkness said.

“This year’s topic: Water: A Global Resource to Share and Protect”, is certain to generate much discussion as young people experience the diversity of their political, social and cultural traditions.

This is, quite literally, a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity for an area high school student.

I encourage our communities’ young people to apply for the chance to participate in the seminar.”

The scholarship is open to students who have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year at Bureau Valley or Ohio high school, are in good academic standing, are interested in global issues and want to build a strong portfolio for their college and professional careers.

Interested applicants must write a 500-word essay on why they would like to participate in the 2016 World Affairs Seminar and how they might apply what they

learn at it. The winning student will make a presentation to the Rotary Club about the experience.

On-the-Road Seminar

HENRY — Trucking regulations got you scratching your head? Hearing conflicting explanations?

To sort truth from conjecture and fact from rumor come join at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Hunt Building in Henry, located directly behind the former car dealership.

The meeting will begin with a hands-on demonstration using actual trucks.

The trucks will be located inside the Hunt Building. At approximately 1 p.m. the group will travel to the Farm Bureau building for lunch, provided by Ag View FS. After a light lunch, the seminar will continue.

Topics covered include UCR registration, CDL licensing, USDOT numbers, CFV vs. FVD and truck inspections. There will also be time for questions. And you’ll receive take-home materials covering these topics.

Presenting the seminar will be Kevin Rund who has specialized in farm transportation issues for the Illinois Farm Bureau for more than 30 years. Also presenting will be Tom Wise, unit chief with

Illinois Department of Transportation.

IVCC choir OGLESBY — Rehearsals for Illinois Valley Community College’s Choir are underway Mondays at 6 p.m. in Room D 223 of the Oglesby campus.

‘Agronomy Night’ set for Feb. 23

OGLESBY — An “Agronomy Night” will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby. University of Illinois Extension Commercial Agriculture Educator Russ Higgins will provide an update on 2015 agronomy research projects conducted at the Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center.

Topics include weed, plant disease, insect and nutrient management. Higgins will also share current cover crop and soil health projects conducted at the research center.

Princeton Shootout PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 23rd annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 27-28 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and

the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grade 7-8 brackets Feb. 27 and in the Grade 5-6 brackets Feb. 28. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout both days. In addition, a 3-point shot and Hot Shot competition will be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day. Tournament T-shirts can be purchased at all admission gates. For more information, call or text 815-876-7021.
