LaMoille students count down to Nashville Band, choir prepare to embark on third big trip

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com LAMOILLE — The LaMoille Schools band and choir is counting down the days until a big trip to Nashville at the end of the month.

The students will experience a Nashville Country Tour Feb. 23-26.

They will perform at the County Music Hall of Fame, visit the Grand Ole Opry, tour the Belle Meade Plantation, see the Hermitage — home of President Andrew Jackson — and stop by the Johnny Cash Museum.

“It’s a nice variety of stops we have planned,” Alexandra Krug, LaMoille Schools band and choir director, said.

This is the third big trip Krug has planned for her students since she was hired 10 years ago. When she came to LaMoille, travel was something she wanted to provide to give students a chance to see and experience new places and things.

“It’s a big deal for us,” Krug said. “The kids look forward to it.

I feel like my numbers are bigger, because I have this involvement in travel and bringing in guest artists.

The band, right now, is a third of the school.”

Caleb Sarff, a LaMoille senior, has

been on all three trips with the band.

“The exposure and experience is huge,” he said. “We can now say we went to Disney, we went to New York, and now we get to check off another place before we graduate from high school.”

Sarff said playing at the Country Music Hall of Fame will be a dream come true.

“My grandpa had been to Nashville many times. He passed away just this past year. So it’s going to be fun to see what he talked a lot about,” he said.

Freshman Dylan Lovgren is looking forward to playing at a new venue in front of a fresh audience.

“Here we all play for people we recognize, where in Nashville we will be playing on a big stage, in a gigantic auditorium and for people we don’t even know,” he said.

Oklahoma is the only other state sophomore Seth Browning has been to, so he’s just excited to get out of Illinois. He said he looks up to band, because Krug always brings an energy that makes students want to learn and be excited about it.

Karli Forbes, a senior, agreed and added although LaMoille has a small band, the expectations are always higher, because it’s difficult to get away with not knowing the music.

The students have worked fundraisers to raise money for the trip.

The students will travel to Tennessee later this month.

And planning and fundraising didn’t come without the help of the community.

“Trips like this can’t happen without the support of the community and donating their time and monetary donations. It’s been great.

There’s a lot of things we can offer our students that we otherwise

couldn’t before,” Krug said.

Krug is especially thankful for the help of the Friends of Music, who helped sponsor the trip.

The band will have a sendoff concert to thank the community and sponsors who helped make this trip happen. The concert will be held Sunday, Feb. 18, at the school.

IVCH Foundation hosts 30th annual ball

“Godspell” was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz of Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden), and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” “Godspell” features a parade of beloved songs including: “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.” This 2012 revival version updates the music to incorporate jazzier harmonies with a rock edge, as well as modernizes

references in the parables.

To build a better world Kindness Club promotes respect and compassion

BY DAVE COOK dcook@bcrnews.com McNABB — Anti-bullying programs are commonplace in many schools, but students at Putnam County Junior High School realized a need to move beyond bullying by creating a club with a foundation of respect, inclusivity and compassion.

At one point, Putnam County Junior High School had an anti-bullying club that was successful, but after a year, students wanted to move on to something more challenging and positive. One of the club’s activities had been participation in a 21-day kindness challenge.

The impact of that inspired the creation of the Kindness Club, which is now in its second year.

“We now focus on making the school a more kind and understanding place by learning about and respecting all types of people,” Kris Sienza, math teacher and club sponsor, said.

The after-school club doesn’t exclude any students from membership, and meeting attendance is voluntary. They average about 25 students per weekly meeting, but have had up to 47 in attendance.

The group has worked with Illinois Valley Animal Rescue to assist with animal adoptions, continued their kindness challenges, created videos and posters in support of their mission, worked on multiple school projects, created a project where students could show appreciation for their teachers and the daily inspiration they provide, raised funds for St. Jude, hosted guest speakers; and plans to continue its members work in local communities.

“The club has had a huge impact on making kids stop and think about how they interact, and it’s brought a variety of social groups together,” Principal Mike Olson said.

While social media and American politics are often striving to create divisiveness, the Kindness Club is moving in the opposite direction.

“I think students really like talking about social situations and kindness, maybe contrary to popular belief. They enjoy getting to know others’ perspectives and situa-

He added the frequency of social discussions has grown and said student comments are both thoughtful and insightful. Sienza has witnessed students voluntarily holding doors for others and helping them when needed; welcoming new students; respecting others’ views even when they disagree; and noticed a difference in many members of the club.

“If we can treat each other with kindness and respect, even when we disagree, and truly listen and try to understand despite differences, then the world would be a better place.

fully we can each try to understand where everyone is coming from. I think the world needs a lot more of that, and hopefully we can do our part in Putnam County to improve it,” he said.

Erin Brooker, the eighth-grade representative for the club, said it’s a great group to belong to because of its positivity and how it helps give her an awareness during those moments when she can show her kindness.

“It’s a great place to spread your ideas and feelings without fear of judgment. This club definitely has a positive effect on the school and helps remind students that even little acts of kindness make a big difference,” Brooker said.

The club also received assistance from the high school’s students through the construction of a “kindness bench.”

“The bench is there for students to sit on if they’re ever feeling down, so others can sit by them and show them true friendship. It’s a great symbol of the kindness and compassion here at PCJH,” Brooker said.

Brooker added she’s noticed the impact of the club through the behavior of her fellow classmates who are now more understanding and empathetic.

“They recognize when someone is feeling left out and take action. I’m very thankful this club exists and can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in the future,” Brooker said.

Influenza still afflicting locals; shots lessen the overall risk

PRINCETON — While this year’s flu vaccine is proving not to be as effective against influenza A, local health officials say it’s still the best defense against the virus.

Laurie Lilley, nursing director for Bureau/ Putnam/Marshall County Health Departments, said the vaccine won’t eliminate the chances of catching the flu, but it could help reduce the risk.

“In any year, even when you’re vaccinated, you can get the flu. The shot is about reducing your risk, not eliminating it. Even when the flu vaccine is ‘less effective,’ it’s a good bet,” she said.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) specu-

lates that this year’s vaccine effectiveness may be only 32 percent against the circulating influenza A strain, which has been associated with more hospitalizations and deaths in people age 65 years and older and younger children.

Because of the low rate, the CDC is recommending people use antiviral medication for treatment of influenza in addition to the vaccine.

The CDC reports influenza activity in the United States has increased significantly in recent weeks. Nearly every state in the country has reported widespread flu activity.

Lilley said the cause of higher activity can be credited to the intensity of the prevailing influenza strain and the difficulty of producing an effective vaccine against it.

For those who believe they’re showing symptoms, Lilley recommends seeing a health care provider for testing and taking the antiviral medications.

“Avoid spreading it to others by staying home,”

she said.

It’s also not too late to get a flu shot. The health department provides the four strain vaccine that protects against influenza A, influenza B, the B/ Victoria lineage strain and the B/Yamagata lineage strain.

Health officials say those who haven’t been vaccinated and have already had the flu should still consider getting vaccinated.

And while there is a misconception that the influenza vaccine causes the flu, Lilley stressed this is not true.

“The vaccine is made either with a) flu vaccine viruses that have been ‘inactivated’ and are therefore not infectious, or b) with no flu vaccine viruses at all, which is the case for recombinant influenza vaccine,” she said.

The most common side effects from the influenza shot are soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling where the shot was given. Low-grade fever, headache and muscle aches also may occur.

The library will offer a quick and easy way to register to vote. WYANET — The R.A. Sapp Library’s computer classes, normally held on the first and third Thursdays at 6 p.m., will be on hiatus until further notice because of a conflict in time.

The library has been hosting a class on self-publishing, books, poetry, etc., on the second Tuesday each month at 1 p.m. So all aspiring authors and poets, come on out and see how to get those books out to the adoring public.

The library has a book group that has been meeting for 18 years. The group meets and discusses a vast array of authors and subjects. February’s book, “The Girl Before” by JP Delaney, is a psychological thriller with many twists and turns and deals with death and deception. The group will meet next at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. The public is welcome to join.

LAMOILLE — The library will be holding two children’s book award programs on Saturday, Feb. 24. At 10:30 a.m., the library will host a Monarch Award story hour for children in grades kindergarten through third grade. The group will read several of the award-nominated titles and then vote for its favorites.

After the Monarch Award story hour, the library will host a pizza party for children in grades fourth to eighth who have read at least three books nominated for this year’s Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award. The nominees will be discussed during pizza before favorites are voted on.

BUDA — The library is open 1 to 5 p.m. Monday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday; 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; closed Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WALNUT — The library is asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — Winter Reading Olympics at the

PERU — Thursday, Feb. 15, 6 p.m., Carol Chandler presents Orphan Trains of Northern Illinois at the library. Between 1854 and 1929, more than 250,000 homeless and orphaned children from crowded eastern U.S. cities were transported to new homes all over the country. These orphan trains, the largest child migration program in the U.S., had a significant impact on the settlement of the Midwest. Chandler’s research covers northwestern Illinois and adjoining counties in Wisconsin and Iowa.

Wednesday, Feb. 21, 1 p.m., the library will hoist a program about memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The program will be presented by the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Again this year, trained AARP volunteers will be at the library to prepare federal and state income returns for electronic filing. This service is for older citizens and/or those with lower incomes. TRIUMPH — The Waltham Curling Club in Triumph is offering numerous curling opportunities for the public and media in coordination with the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

There will be two open house sessions. The first from 5 to 9 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 23 will be a free session open to all individuals age 8 and above. This session will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The club will attempt to get all attendees some amount of instruction and icetime. The amount of ice-time will be subject to the number of people attending.

There will also be an open house event from 9 a.m. from 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 with pre-registration available. Cost is $5 for a 45-minute reserved session. Each session is limited to 24 individuals. Registration will be available at www. walthamcurling.org.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigers Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 25th annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 24-25 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grades 7-8 brackets Saturday and in the Grades 5-6 brackets Sunday.

Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during both days. In addition, a 3-Point Shot and a Hot-Shot compe-

tition will also be held.

IVCC SOFTBALL CLINIC OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 19th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18, in IVCC’s gym.

Coaches and current players will offer softball instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

There will be two sessions each day.

On Saturday, participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and participants in grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, grades 2-4 will meet 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and grades 5-8 from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. If a player can only come one day, the cost is $20.

A hub of the community Lostant Library welcomes new librarian April Jording

BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — While books are the first thing to come to mind when thinking of libraries, they also serve as an important part of the community by giving people a safe and comfortable place to meet and relax.

April Jording became Lostant Community Library’s newest librarian in October, and there are several things she’d like to do in order to make the library a more useful and comfortable place for residents of all ages.

“I’d like to bring in some more simple, community-based aspects to our programs and other things we offer. Simple is what draws people in, at least initially,” she said.

Jording grew up in rural Tonica and has lived next door to the Lostant Library for the past two years. She also works as an emergency room technician at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Ottawa.

This is her first time working in a library, but she’s been an avid reader since the age of three and loves all kinds of books.

“I hate to have to get rid of them, but we’ve been cleaning out a lot of our older books in order to update our collection, and we’ll also be incorporating more technology into the library,” she said.

One of the biggest additions to the library since Jording’s arrival has been the implementation of Axis 360, the library’s e-book platform.

We’ve had a lot of interest in this, especially from teens,” she said.

She’ll also be planning to increase the amount of children’s reading activities.

Genealogy researchers will be happy to learn the library’s significant archive of local history will be gradually digitized.

Over the years, several people have donated their scrapbooks of old newspaper clippings, photographs, yearbooks, journals, school notebooks and more to the library.

When taken as a whole, the collection paints an informative and vibrant recollection of Lostant’s past.

Jording would additionally like to create a local history display case within the library.

“I’d also like to have a small meeting area with some comfortable chairs with a table so people can meet for some face-to-face interaction,” she added.

She’s created a questionnaire for patrons that asks about their favorite books, movies, activities, what’s enjoyed about the library, and the ways in which they think it could be improved.

Other plans include more children’s reading activities, programs for teens and adults, and a comfortable meeting area.

Jording is also considering hosting board game events for local youths and families and will be hosting a family-friendly Valentine’s Day event, which will include games and a movie.

PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has announced auditions for the children’s musical, “Tumbleweeds.” 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of children’s theater at PAC, and to celebrate, they are reviving “Tumbleweeds,” its first-ever children’s production.

Based on the comic strip created

by Tom K. Ryan, “Tumbleweeds” centers around the title character, a cowpoke who returns to his hometown of Grimy Gulch, population 49. After venturing out of the Wild West, Tumbleweeds is determined to improve his town. Unfortunately, this interferes with the nefarious plans of Throckmorton Fleesum, his partner, Clementine Greedy, and Clementine’s not-so-bright cousin, Snake-Eye McFoul, who plan to demolish the town and sell the land for development to the Choo-Choo Railroad Company. With a cast of zany characters, such as Hildegard Hamhocker, who has everything she wants EXCEPT a man – ANY man, the trio of Undertaker Claude Clay, his Gravedigger, Wart Wimble, and the Hangman, Hogarth Hemp, the Poohawk Indian tribe, a group of visiting schoolgirls, their teacher, Miss Prudence Lovely, the Grimy Gulch townspeople, and, of course, Tumbleweeds’ faithful horse, Epic, the show has many speaking parts and both singing and non-singing roles.

Rehearsals take place evenings and weekends, approximately two to four rehearsals/week for cast members with speaking roles (every effort is made to work around everyone’s busy schedules), until the last two weeks before the show, when the rehearsal schedule increases. Performances will be April 27-29. David and Shelley Gorenz and Rachel

Gorenz-Johnson will co-direct “Tumbleweeds.” David and Shelley are directing “Tumbleweeds” for the third time; Rachel portrayed Hildegard Hamhocker in the 1998 production and helped direct the 2008 10th anniversary show.

Auditions will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Prairie Arts Center, 24, Park Ave. East, Princeton (children may audition either time).

Auditions are open to children in grades 3-8; select second graders may be cast as well, so second graders with a strong desire to perform and an ability to follow direction are welcome to audition.

Children will be asked to sing “America the Beautiful;” those interested in a speaking role will be provided with a scene selection at the audition.

A parent or guardian is required to accompany their child to the audition unless previous arrangements are made with the director, and should come prepared to list their child’s height, clothing sizes and any schedule conflicts. A parent meeting will be held at the same time as the auditions to organize volunteers for the production tasks associated with such a large production. It takes many volunteers to produce a show of this magnitude, and all families are expected to help in some way.

‘A Night to Remember’ set for April 14 at Metro Center PRINCETON — “A Night to Remember,” a prom for special needs high school age and up, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. April 14 at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton.

Each special needs attendee will receive a crown because in God’s eyes we are all kings and queens. Corsages and boutonnières will be provided.
