Love is in the air Valentine’s Day is Sunday, Feb. 14, and it’s no secret this special day is one filled with love ... not to mention gifts that represent the fondness felt for each other. Statistics also show 180 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged, and there are 198 million roses produced. The website also said the average consumer spends $116.21 on their Valentine’s Day purchases.

From the Ground Up! will host conference

PRINCETON — From the Ground Up! will host a half-day mini conference, “The Best in Local Foods” from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Princeton Public Library.

From the Ground Up! is a project led by the Bureau and Putnam County Health Department through a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Market Promotions Program.

From the Ground Up! seeks to promote local foods, growers and farmers markets in Bureau and Putnam counties,

highlighting local foods available at markets in Sheffield, Spring Valley, Princeton, Walnut and Granville. This meeting will launch efforts to prepare for the 2016 growing season.

The featured speaker will be Holly Hughes, a University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener from Grand Ridge.

She is a grower on her five-acre family farm, Grateful Plains, supplying up to 40 local families with homegrown produce and cut flowers to members of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

As a small farm advocate and passionate gardener, Hughes connects regional consumers, producers and the community at large with the local food movement through her weekly column, The Garden Maiden, and through her 2016 Viva La Local public awareness campaign, launching Feb. 28.

Ag-related events 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 21, for the 15th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals.

The National League Central Champion Cardinals will be playing the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 1:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25 each and includes a specially designed T-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front.

Four-H members, leaders, alumni and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield.

Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member.

As an added bonus, the Cardinals give-away item for the game is an adult Cardinals pullover. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-a-kind item.

Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office or on the web at www.mo4h. missouri.edu. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 11. Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope.

ipate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games.

Soil and Water Management Seminar

OGLESBY — Soil and water interactions will be the focus of a Soil and Water Management Seminar sponsored by University of Illinois Extension Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit on Thursday, Feb. 25.

“Those attending will hear about soil microbes and how they affect soil health, the use of drones and radar in water management, nitrates and water quality, getting water to where roots are, and how extreme precipitation may affect soil erosion” said Duane Friend, U of I Extension educator.

Certified crop advisors will receive 4.5 continuing education units in Soil and Water Management by attending this seminar.

Extension will hold the seminar at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby, in Room CTC 124, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Presentations will be delivered via PowerPoint and web conferencing from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch is included in the registration fee of $45, along with program materials. Spring Gardener and Naturalist Seminar

OGLESBY — Those interested in gardening or the natural world should plan to attend the Spring Gardener and Naturalist Seminar on March 12.

The program is a day filled with informative sessions at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.

The general public is invited to take advantage of this special day of garden and nature-related seminars which is co-sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension and IVCC. Get gardening tips from the pros that will show how to grow and create flower arrangements for the home,

or preserve fruits, vegetables and herbs for dining pleasure.

No room for a large vegetable garden? Learn how container gardening can put produce on the table.

Plan a landscape with plant combinations that provide beauty and utility, or help naturally manage garden pests. Develop a seasonal schedule for planting and maintaining beautiful landscapes and don’t neglect the importance of building good soils.

Learn how to turn a yard into a certified wildlife habitat. Other sessions will explore the wonders of hummingbirds, butterflies and how to get started in beekeeping. Learn about common diseases that

attack trees and shrubs, and the strategies to combat them. Find out where locally people can view over 270 bird species and 640 native Illinois plants or get tips on how to get the most out of a visit to a national park during the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

These are just some of the topics that will be covered during the seminar, and participants will also have time to network with many like-minded gardeners and naturalists throughout the day.

The seminar will have four sessions with the choice of four classes available in each session. Check-in is at 8 a.m. with the first class starting at 8:30 a.m. Classes

are 75 minutes long, with 15-minute breaks between classes. The last class ends at 3:15 p.m. There will be several vendors to visit during breaks and lunch. A continental breakfast, cold drinks and snacks between classes, lunch and brownies for the afternoon snack are all included in the registration fee. There will also be door prizes awarded throughout the day.

The cost is $35. Advance registration is required by March 10 to the LaSalle County Extension Office.

Annual Black and White Ball will be Feb. 20 LASALLE — The seventh annual Black & White Ball will be Saturday, Feb. 20. at Senica’s Oak Ridge, LaSalle, and will include dinner, dancing, a complimentary martini bar, music by Michael J. Perkins and Tony Bianchi, photos by Annette Barr, a live auction presented by Matthew and Brian Bullock, raffles and an introduction of the 2016 Ambassador, Brock Bassett and his family.

The event is black tie optional and tickets are $100 per person or $700 per table (seats eight). All proceeds remain local and help children by giving them the opportunity to live, learn and play to their maximum potential. The event is expected to raise more than $30,000 (gross) for Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development (SRRC).

SRRC is a non-profit agency that serves more than 500 children per year. Services include: speech, developmental and physical therapy to children throughout the Starved Rock area; a child care center for children with and without special needs in Ottawa; and toddler classes in Ottawa, Princeton and Peru.

New 4-H SPIN Club tackles video production SPRING VALLEY — The University of Illinois Extension’s 4-H program is offering a new 4-H SPIN Club opportunity for youth interested in video production.

SPIN Clubs are special interest clubs where youth learn about a topic of interest from an adult who has an expertise in that area.

Hugo Heredia of Imagine U Studios in Spring Valley will be teaching the six-week

program.

Participants will learn about basic techniques using the Adobe Cloud mobile apps. In addition, participants will be working on creating short films and exploring different genres using apps and mobile devices to produce their media.

The club will meet on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning March 14 and concluding

‘QC Gospel Meets New York Jazz’ DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Westbrook Singers, a nationally-known gospel group from the Quad Cities, and Ray Blue, an internationally known jazz musician from New York City, come together on the Adler Theatre stage in Davenport, Iowa.

Extension will offer Meals for Healthy Heart program Locally, heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death, higher than the state average.

Nationwide, more than 81 million Americans, 37 percent of the population, have heart disease.

February is National Heart Month. Join University of Illinois Extension in celebrating National Heart Month by enrolling in their program Meals for a Healthy Heart.

Meals for a Healthy Heart is a series of two educational sessions for people trying to prevent or manage heart disease. Learn how to choose low-fat foods, reduce sodium, make healthier choices when eating out, read food labels and prepare for doctor’s visits. Enjoy watching food demonstrations of easy-to-prepare recipes that you will taste in class.

Health briefs Relay for Life kicks off with Lacon fundrasier LACON — On Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Lacon American Legion, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Marshall and Putnam Counties will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather for a kickoff dinner to launch the 21st Relay For Life fundraising year.

Although Relay For Life of Marshall and Putnam Counties is not until this summer, now is the time to get involved. One in every 100 Americans participates in this fundraising event that has become a global phenomenon. Community members are invited to attend the kickoff celebration to learn more about the upcoming event and how they can become part of this year’s Relay For Life.

This year the theme is “Wish Upon a Cure,” and teams are excited to kick off the fundraising year with this Disney theme. A dinner of pulled pork will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Hot dogs will be offered for kids. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for children.

In addition to dinner, entertainment will be provided by Dance Central. The routines will be taught at a special clinic. Be sure to watch for more information about the clinic. This kick off event will also feature, a silent auction, raffles and 50/50.

Health department offers free HIV and Hepatitis C screening As a part of their low-cost laboratory service, the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments are now offering free HIV screening for high-risk individuals, such as anyone using IV drugs or sharing needles.

A limited number of Hepatitis C test kits will also soon be available for the same high-risk individuals. Call 815-872-5091, ext. 221, to schedule an appointment with the nurse for testing. Both tests are completely confidential.

Young writers and artists needed for WQPT writing contest

MOLINE — WQPT-Quad Cities PBS invites young authors and illustrators in kindergarten to third grade to submit their original stories to the PBS Kids Writing Contest.

Stories, which must be the original work of the child, may be non-fiction, fiction, prose or poetry.

Entries, postmarked by Wednesday, March 30, can be dropped off at WQPT’s office at Western Illinois University’s riverfront cam-

Sixteen local winners (four from each grade) will be honored with prizes at a ceremony held at the Butterworth Center in May and will appear on-air in a promotion for PBS Kids programs on WQPT. Each participant will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Celebrating Cesar Chavez with art contest BROOKFIELD — The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, is inviting all students in Illinois to participate in the “In Honor of Cesar Chavez” art contest reflecting the spirit of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers and their commitment to improving the standard of living, wages and working conditions of farm workers through non-violent social action. Prizes will be awarded in several age categories ranging from prekindergarten through Grade 12.

Accepted mediums for artwork are one or a combination of the following: Watercolors, acrylics, pastels, colored pencils, crayons, collages, ink, graphic design and original video or audio recordings (one entry per person). All entries must be received by the Society on or before March 7. Entries will be judged based on their creativity, originality and overall reflection of the subject. Original entries will not be returned.

Students are encouraged to create art that reflects their own positive actions and the actions of others, such as in community service and their connection with wildlife and nature.

Only original, unpublished artwork created solely by the entrant will be accepted with a properly completed entry form. Artwork should be submitted to the “In Honor of Cesar Chavez,” Art Contest, Brookfield Zoo, 3300 Golf Road, Brookfield, IL 60513. PRINCETON — Libraries are hubs of their communities. People of all ages and demographics use their services regularly.

A feature that’s becoming more common in modern libraries are cafes, such as the one located within Princeton Public Library (PPL). It’s an attraction that sets it apart from others area libraries and is also the only local cafe where customers can check out books, CDs, DVDs and magazines. Patrons are additionally able to access free Wi-Fi, a fax machine, computer use, private study spaces adult and children’s programming.

After PPL announced their new sponsorship program for the cafe, area businesses now have an additional avenue to consider when looking for effective ways to advertise their services. Along with helping to provide support for the cafe, businesses can take advantage of the library’s location on the corner of a highly-traveled intersection and steady customer traffic, which averages more than 350 patrons daily.

“We are launching a new opportunity for local businesses to promote their support of our library through a sponsorship program of the Princeton Public Library Cafe.

The cafe has become an integral part of the library and is a popular place for casual business meetings, regular social engagements and collaborative study spaces. The

library board and staff are pleased that the cafe is the first thing people see when they enter the library. HENRY — The 48th annual Henry Decoy Show will be Feb. 14 at Henry-Senachwine High School from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a great show for those who like to see or collect decoys and other

waterfowl pictures, books, calls and other trivia.

It also features many items from the historic Illinois River waterfowl area. Many of the dealers are from this area also.

Jason Baldwin, a well-known decoy expert, will be on hand to give evaluations of decoys.

Instructors for the clinic will be St. Bede coaches and players, headed by varsity coach Bill Booker. Participants will learn baseball fundamentals for the upcoming season. Sessions will focus on hitting, field, throwing, bunting, pitch and catching skills.

OGLESBY— Illinois Valley Community College’s softball team will host the 17th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13 and 14, in IVCC’s gym. Coaches and current players will offer instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

Participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sunday. Grades 5-8 will meet

from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. If a player can only come one day, the cost is $20.

Princeton Shootout

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 23rd annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 27-28 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grade 7-8 brackets Feb. 27 and in the Grade 5-6 brackets Feb. 28. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout both days. In addition, a 3-point shot and Hot Shot competition will be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day. Tournament T-shirts can be purchased at all admission gates. For more information, call or text 815-876-7021.
