A day of love Valentine’s Day is Thursday, Feb. 14 — a day known for expressing one’s love to those they hold most dear.

So what will you be giving your sweetheart to celebrate this special occasion?

According to corsinet.com, 73 percent of the people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are men. While California produces about 60 percent of American roses, the huge number of these fragrant blooms are imported, mostly from South American. Approximately 110 million roses, the majority of them red, will be sold and delivered within a three-day time period for this holiday.

About one billion Valentine’s Day cards will be exchanged too. Valentine’s Day is the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas. It’s said Hallmark has more than 1,330 different cards specifically for the February holiday. Teachers receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by children, wives and then sweethearts. Children ages 6 to 10 exchange more than 650 million Valentine’s cards with teachers, classmates and family members.

The heart is the most common symbol of romantic love. Ancient cultures believed the human soul lived in the heart. Others thought it to be the source of emotion and intelligence. Some believed the heart embodied a man’s truth, strength and nobility.

The heart may be associated with love because the ancient Greeks believed it was the target of Eros, known as Cupid to the Romans. Anyone shot in the heart by one of Cupid’s arrows would fall hopelessly in love. Because the heart is so closely linked to love, it’s red color is thought to be the most romantic.

Making a clean sweep St. Bede’s AP physics class attempting to make a slam dunk

PERU — The AP physics class at St. Bede Academy (SBA) has modeled an air-powered basketball launcher, which allows students to see first hand how basic principals, such as impulse-momentum theorem, projectile motion and kinematics play out in real life.

While the device has yet to make a slam dunk, it is able to shoot a basketball across the gymnasium — and pretty close to the basket.

Students are still experimenting, working out the kinks and referring back to their formulas. But they are determined to narrow in on the right solution.

Carter Funfsinn, a senior at SBA, built the model using scrap wood, an air pressure tank and some tubing and fabrication. He said the most expensive piece of the model was actually the basketball, which cost $20.

AP physics teacher Rick Fess compared the model to a giant potato gun, only much safer because it doesn’t require fuel for the explosion.

The device works like so: About a gallon of air is pressurized in a tank to about 100 psi. When the tank’s valve is quickly opened, it discharges the air at a high rate of speed. The air bursts into a tube connected to a barrel that holds the basketball in place. The barrel is designed to fit the ball tightly, so when the burst of air pushes on the ball, it creates friction. This allows for pressure to build-up behind the ball before creating enough impact to shoot the ball across the court.

The model the students are currently working on in hopes the ball will soon make an actual basket. has undergone several modifications to help it work efficiently. Funfsinn said with a lot of trial and error, the model is what it is today. The first model was a more portable set-up, where the pressurized tank was held by a student during the launch. But the class quickly discovered the recoil was hard to manage, and a wooden frame had to be built to hold the tank in place during the explosion.

Now with a stronger model, Fess said students are reworking the math and lining up velocities to get the right aim for that basketball to swish through the hoop.

A lesson being taught on the side of this experiment is that real life scenarios can be more challenging to figure out as opposed to problems displayed on a whiteboard.

While students have solved the equation that tells them the ball should make a clean basket, their calculation doesn’t factor in things like air leaks and other elements or situations So figuring out an answer around those circumstances is what’s keeping students actively brainstorming for the upshot.

Farm Labor Liability seminar set for Feb. 16 PRINCETON — Agriculture is a dangerous industry. Each year unnecessary deaths and injuries affect farmers and their families, farm employees and rescuers.

For this reason county Farm Bureaus have teamed up to offer a series of seminars pertaining to and titled, “Farm Labor Liability and Safety Measures.” These seminars will take place Thursday, Feb. 16, in two separate locations. The morning seminar will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Henry at Birkey’s Farm Store. The afternoon session will begin at 1 p.m. at the Community Center in Annawan.

Featured speakers include Sheri Saskowski, environmental health and safety specialist at Gold Star FS. She will speak about properties of anhydrous ammonia and how to stay safe while handling and transporting the valuable agricultural

input. Tony Stirling and Roberta Boarman from FBFM will focus on farm labor rates and tax liability which come with hiring on-farm labor. Garrett Thalgott, attorney with Illinois Farm Bureau, will speak on employment liability. Learn through his presentation the risks you inherit with on-farm labor. Finally, Mike May and Wes Kieser, both field district underwriters for Country Financial will speak on risk and exposures you place on yourself and your farm when hiring farm employees, and the steps you should take to be covered.

There will be time at the end of the presentations for questions.

Farm Income Seminar is Feb. 27 PRINCETON — Agriculture has always been a volatile business, and any time you have volatility, you need to make certain your financial plan is solid — especially when things get tough. For this reason, the Bureau County Farm Bureau has teamed up with University of Illinois Extension to offer a seminar at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Bureau County Extension office, 850 Thompson St. in Princeton.

Princeton Shootout PRINCETON — Princeton Tiger Booster Club will be hosting the 24th annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 25-26 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grades 7-8 brackets on Saturday, Feb. 25, and in the Grades 5-6 brackets on Sunday, Feb. 26. Games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. In addition, a 3-Point Shot and a Hot-Shot competition will also be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day.

IVCC softball clinic OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 18th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Feb. 18-19 in IVCC’s gym.

Coaches and current players will offer softball instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

There will be two sessions each day. On Saturday, Feb. 18, participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Participants in grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 19, grades 2-4 will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with grades 5-8 meeting from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. If a player can only come one day, the cost is $20.

All players should bring a glove and tennis shoes (no spikes or cleats allowed). If a player has her own bat, she is allowed to bring it. Please make sure all items have the player’s name on them for identification purposes.
