PROMise Dress Sale seeks dress donations Annual shopping event is March 10

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Now is the time to start going through the closet and consider donating those dresses that may never be worn again.

Plans are underway for the sixth annual PROMise Dress Sale, which will be held Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Princeton.

PROMise Dress Sale coordinator Amy Thompson is looking for new and pre-worn dress donations to sell at the event. She’s teamed up with Jay Schneider, owner of Apollo Theater, who is offering a free bucket of popcorn to anyone who donates a dress from now until Thursday, Feb. 8.

“It’s a win-win. The girls get to shop for dresses, and this year (Second Story) gets a donation for what they do for the community. For me, it’s a no-brainer,” he said.

In 2013, Thompson organized the sale to give young women a chance to shop new and pre-worn prom dresses for $50 or less. The sale has grown every year since and attracts shoppers from all over the area and beyond.

While dresses come in all shapes and sizes, Thompson has found her event has attracted more than just shoppers looking for a prom dress. There are always plenty of options for someone looking to shop for various formal occasions, whether it be homecoming, a cruise, a wedding or just to play dress-up.

Thompson also offers a VIP shop night before the main event to those who donate a dress five years old or newer. This year’s VIP night will be held Friday, March 9, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Another great thing about the sale is that Thompson donates the proceeds to two non-profit community organizations that are geared toward benefiting kids.

Last year’s event sold 91 dresses and raised $1,656. This year, Thompson is hoping to beat those numbers and has chosen First United Methodist Youth Ministry and Second Story Teen Center in Princeton as the recipients of this year’s donations.

“Second Story is a great place, because it gives kids a safe place to go and stay out of trouble. It’s a positive organization Princeton has, and there is a true need for it,” she said.

Augustana College fall dean’s list ROCK ISLAND — Augustana College in Rock Island announced 1,138 students were named to the dean’s list for the 2017 fall term. Students who have earned this academic honor have maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or

‘Night of Conservation’ program set for Feb. 13 Experts to offer info on how to improve habitat PRINCETON — Improving habitat for landowners and for wildlife will be the focus of the upcoming program sponsored by University of Illinois Extension - Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit, Bureau County Farm Bureau, Bureau County Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Pheasants Forever, and Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The program will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the University of Illinois Extension – Bureau County Office in Princeton. The public is invited to participate.

“Whether you live on a farm or in an urban setting, wildlife is a part of your everyday life,” Daryle Wragge, Extension ag program coordinator, said.

“Many species have adapted their way of living to be your neighbor, while others around us need our help to conserve their kind due to the pressure of a forever changing environment,” he said.

Events sought for Tourism Guide

Trivia Night planned Feb. 10 at Festival 56 PRINCETON — Festival 56 will host a Trivia Night on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Grace Performing Arts Center in Princeton. The evening will offer live musical entertainment by Festival favorites Madison Kauffman and Kyle Burch with Charlie Gebeck as accompanist.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the first round will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The evening features eight rounds of play with first- and second-place teams earning cash prizes. In addition to trivia, the evening includes a cash bar, a 50/50 drawing, a raffle for a 2018 summer season ticket, and

a bake sale, plus free popcorn and pretzels.

Registration is $20 per person, payable in advance, for teams of up to six people. People may sign up in groups or as individuals. Those who register as individuals will be assigned to tables the evening of the event.

The Bureau County Tourism Committee seeks information by early February on events happening around the county in 2018.

Any event information will be placed in the Bureau County Tourism Guide. There are 10,000 copies of the guide printed the first week of March. They are distributed all around the state at visitors centers and locally at businesses throughout Bureau County and beyond.

Event information will also be on the committee’s Facebook page and its website at www.bureaucounty-IL.com.

All kinds of events will be listed from parades to festivals, 5K races and fundraisers plus local outdoor activities like fishing tournaments, cross country skiing and hunting.

If communities are planning special events to commemorate the state of Illinois’ 200th birthday event in 2018, the committee will also list them in the tourism guide.

Travel New England’s Rails & Sails at the Princeton Public Library on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Co-hosted by Experience Travel in Princeton, the program will explore the beauty of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Many are coastal sites. Some of the places are seen from a cruise boat, others by steam train. There will be two repeat programs, one at 2:30 p.m. and one at 6:30 p.m. This program is free to attend and all are welcome.

The library will offer a quick and easy way to register to vote. If you are not registered to vote or have moved or changed your name since the last time you were registered, bring two forms of ID (which includes driver’s license, Social Security card, ID and/or something that shows a current address) to the library during the following days and times: Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Friday, Feb. 16, from 3

to 6 p.m. Registration will occur at the reference desk in the center of the library. Registration materials will be filed directly with the Bureau County Clerk’s office upon completion of the registration forms.

Since February 2017, the library has been offering library patrons access to an educational resource site called Lynda.com which provides more than 5,723 courses in business, technology and creative skills taught by industry experts. The site has recently added new courses that the library would like to recommend. “Creating a Positive and Healthy Work Environment” and “Developing Managers in Organizations” are valuable team development workshops, “Common Meeting Problems” and “Monday Productivity Pointers” offer suggestions for how to be more productive, and “Holding Yourself Accountable” and “Acting Decisively” will hone leadership skills. Cardholders can access links to these workshop videos and others by clicking on the LYNDA.com graphic in the Helpful Links section found toward the bottom of the right-hand column on the main page of the library website, www.princetonpl. org. Users will be prompted to enter their card number and password (the last four digits of their card number).

The license permits up to five users to access the videos at a time and allows for remote access. A number of companies, government agencies, and universities have offered Lynda.com for years. The library is proud to be able to offer another excellent resource to the many helpful databases available to our patrons.

The library recently added new fiction books to the library collection, including “Robicheaux” by James Lee Burke, “Unbound” by Stuart Woods, “Carnegie’s Maid” by Marie Benedict and “Freak of Nature” by Jannifer Powelson. We also recently added new DVDs to the library’s collection, including “Game of Thrones: Season 7,” “Stronger,” “The Mountain Between Us,” “American Made” and “Dunkirk.”

SPRING VALLEY — Lego Play is a new program for children ages 8-16

to create masterpieces with Legos.

Legos will be provided by the library.

Any child under 7 must be accompanied by an adult and will be given Duplo blocks to build with during the program, if they so desire. Please do not bring in any Legos to the program, respect the creativity of others, leave the Legos at the library, and have fun.

This free program will be held once a month the third Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Call the library at 815-663-4741 with any questions.

The library in Spring Valley is also collecting aluminum cans with the proceeds supporting the library and local scouts. Cans may be dropped off at the library during its hours of operation. The Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library Board of Trustees will hold meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. in the meeting room at the library.

WYANET — The R.A. Sapp Library’s computer classes, normally held on the first and third Thursdays at 6 p.m. will be on hiatus until further notice because of a conflict in time.

The library has been hosting a class on self-publishing, books, poetry, etc., on the second Tuesday each month at 1 p.m. So all aspiring authors and poets come on out and see how to get those books out to the adoring public.

The library has a book group that has been meeting for 18 years. The group meets and discusses a vast array of authors and subjects. February’s book, “The Girl Before” by JP Delaney is a psychological thriller with many twists and turns and deals with death and deception. The group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. The public is welcome to join.

BUDA — The library is open 1 to 5 p.m. Monday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday; 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; closed Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services.

This service is for older citizens and/or those with lower incomes. No business-related tax returns. GIRLS REGIONALS IHSA postseason girls basketball takes center stage this week with finals scheduled locally at Wethersfield and Marquette in 1A and Mendota in 2A. At Wethersfield (1A): The host Lady Geese (22-8) should fly high on their home court with another showdown with (4) Ashton-Franklin Center looming. AFC won that regional finals matchup last year. L-O senior Lexi Loftus (1,888 career points) is winding down one of the best offensive careers in Bureau County history.

At Marquette (1A): No. 1 ranked and defending state champ Annawan (29-0) have won 50 straight games dating back to last year and won their eighth consecutive Lincoln Trail Conference championship.

While hosted by Marquette, this regional will be played at Marseilles.

At Mendota (2A): Two-time defending regional champion Hall (22-6) heads up the field at Mendota. The Lady Devils face a tough road to 3-peat as regional champions, having to go through the Lady Trojans (14-11) on their home court, or rival St. Bede, and then either Princeton or Bureau Valley Hall coach Brian Holman said the BV sub-sectional as a whole is one of the toughest in 2A featuring eight teams with 14 or more wins.

SECTIONAL WRESTLING Princeton and St. Bede will be represented at the Oregon 1A Sectional wrestling tournament Feb. 2-3. Princeton won its own regional, its first regional championship for coach Steve Amy and first since 2007. PHS takes three regional champions in Peyton Hammerich (160), Dallas Hill (195) and Chase Tatum (220).

Putnam County/Hall will be represented by junior Joe Mecagini (195) at the Sycamore 2A Sectional. He placed third in the Rock Falls 2A Regional.

CURLING CLUB OPEN HOUSE TRIUMPH — The Waltham Curling Club in Triumph is offering numerous curling opportunities for the public and media in coordination with the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

There will be two open house sessions. The

first from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 will be a free session open to all individuals age 8 and above. This session will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The club will attempt to get all attendees some amount of instruction and icetime. The amount of ice-time will be subject to the number of people attending.

There will also be an open house event from 9 a.m. from 9 p.m. with pre-registration available.

Cost is $5 for a 45-minute reserved session. Each session is limited to 24 individuals. Registration will be available at www.walthamcurling. org. Advance registration and payment will be required. Guests will receive instruction and the opportunity to play.

Additional activities may also be scheduled as specific Olympic curling event and TV schedules are released.

PRINCETON SHOOTOUT PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigers Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 25th annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 24-25 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities and the Peoria areas will be represented.

Teams will compete in the Grades 7-8 brackets Saturday and in the Grades 5-6 brackets Sunday.

Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during both days. In addition, a 3-Point Shot and a Hot-Shot competition will also be held. IVCC SOFTBALL CLINIC OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 19th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18, in IVCC’s gym.

Coaches and current players will offer softball instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

There will be two sessions each day. On Saturday, participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and participants in grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, grades

LORI’S WALLEYE 5K RUN SPRING VALLEY — This year’s Lori’s Walleye 5K Run will be Saturday, March 24, starting at 9 a.m. at Hall High School. BRUINS TO HOST SPRING TRAINING PERU — The St. Bede Academy baseball program will present the Spring Training Baseball Clinic March 3 and March 10-11 for boys ages 6-14. SBA head coach Bill Booker and his staff along with Bruins players will offer instruction on the fundamentals of the game, including hitting, fielding, pitching, catching and throwing. Weather permitting, some drills may at the academy field.

Session I will be for ages 6-8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 3.

Session II will be for ages 9-11 from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 10.

Session III will be for ages 12-14 from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 11.

Heart of Fashion event will feature cocktail brunch and fashion show OTTAWA — Festivities Unlimited will present “Heart of Fashion,” a fresh and fun style show on Sunday, Feb. 11.

More than 45 local male and female models will showcase fashions from 12 shops and boutiques in the Ottawa, LaSalle, Peru, Spring Valley and Princeton areas. Each model will bring their own unique flair to the event, and many vendors will have clothing and accessories for sale during the event.

Vendors include Chic & Unique, Iconic, Bold & Curvy, That Guy’s Secret, Scout Outdoor Apparel, SAS Style & Sophistication, Gents Men’s Wear, Amia Boutique, juniper & mae, Rubenesque, Stella’s and Little Blue Dress.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., a brunch will be served, including an omelet station, chicken and waffle bites, and other brunch items. A cash bar will be available, featuring a Bloody Mary

station. Soda, tea and coffee will also be available.

“The planning team has had a great time putting this event together,” said Pamela Beckett, president of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation. “We are thrilled that Kari and Don Castelli, owners of Festivities Unlimited, chose to host the show to benefit our Leadership Fund.”

PCCK will host Trivia Night Feb. 10 SPRING VALLEY — The Putnam County Cancer Killers (PCCK) Relay for Life team will host a night of trivia fun on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Spring Valley Boat Club.

Check in will begin at 5 p.m. with trivia starting at 5:30 p.m. Original questions from PCCK’s trivia panel consist of categories of all subjects from pop culture to geography so there is something for everyone.

The entry is $100 for a team consisting of 6-10 people. The top three teams will take home a cash prize. There will be 10 rounds of 10 questions. Ten mulligans may be

Putnam County Bancorp elects two new directors The Putnam County Bancorp Board of Directors is announcing the addition of two new directors.

Eve Postula of Peru and Ralph (Joe) Gensini Jr. of Hennepin were elected at the 2018 annual shareholder meeting on Jan. 17 at Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton.

Postula has spent her professional career in accounting and financial services. She currently holds the position of business office manager and treasurer at St. Bede Abbey and Academy in Peru.

Since joining St. Bede in 2004, she has been instrumental in reinstating the boarding program and reversing a deficit spending cycle at the Academy. She also holds the role of chief financial officer. This includes the direction of the capital campaign and manager of the new construction at the Abbey and Academy.

Postula and her husband, Tim, both grew up in LaSalle and graduated from St. Bede Academy. She has also attained a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Mary’s Col-

lege and an MBA in finance from the Chicago Graduate School of Business at Loyola University.

Gensini currently raises livestock, farms and owns and operates Gensini Excavating. Gensini Excavating was established in 2001 and has grown into a diversified company that handles many types of construction, including earthmoving, underground boring, trucking and other multifaceted projects. The majority of the projects are commercial or state funded. He is a graduate

of Putnam County High School and attended Black Hawk Junior College. He studied ag business.

Gensini and his wife, Kerry, moved back to the Putnam County area in 1999. Joe and his family enjoy a multitude of outdoor activities such as showing livestock and bass fishing.
