Beginning at 2 p.m., Taylor’s performance will include familiar songs by Elton John, the Doobie Brothers and other contemporary artists. The historical society is continuing its concert tradition of requesting contributions to the Bureau County Food Pantry as the “price of admission.”

Pageant rewards poise and elegance Bureau Fair Queen Brianna Legner honored for her communication skills at state contest

BY DAVE COOK dcook@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — 2017 Bureau County Fair Queen Brianna Legner has done a fine job of representing both herself and the county during her reign, and her performance at the recent Illinois County Fair Queen pageant earned her an additional accolade.

The well-spoken Legner, 19, was awarded the Communication Skills Award at the 59th annual pageant. She competed against 69 other county fair queens at the pageant held in Springfield, and she’s been enjoying her royal experiences.

“It’s been exciting, and I’ve gotten to do a lot of things which I hadn’t imagined I’d be doing,” Legner said.

“I didn’t realize how much there was to see and do at the Bureau County Fair until I became queen and was there all day,” she said.

Legner said she had fun during the state pageant and appreciated her new friendships with the other contestants.

“It was a tiring, but exciting weekend and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I wouldn’t have wanted to have been doing anything else. I met so many wonderful women, and I hope to be able to continue to grow my relationships with them,” she said.

She added her time as royalty has taught her how many people look up to their local fair queen.

“I think it’s special when people recognize me. It’s made me realize I’m not just representing the Bureau County Fair, but also the entire county and everything and everyone we have here. That’s an important thing, and I’ve loved being able to do it,” she said.

Samantha Hasselbring, 19, the 2017 Miss Iroquois County Fair Queen, was named the 2018 Miss Illinois Fair Queen. She will reign over the 2018 Illinois State Fair as well as the 104 county fairs.

Princeton’s North, South business districts recognized 89 properties placed on National Register of Historic Places

BY LYLE GANTHER lganther@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — Princeton’s north and south business districts are now officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Michael Reynolds, director of the National Park Service, made the announcement Friday that the city’s application had been approved.

“This is a culmination of many hours and determined effort of many individuals who made this happen,” Mayor Joel Quiram said in a post he

placed on his Facebook page.

This designation will now be used as a marketing tool to attract visitors interested in history and architecture. It will also allow for tax credits of 20 percent for anyone interested in redeveloping property along Main Street back to its historical significance.

Frank Butterfield, director of the Springfield office of Landmarks Illinois, a statewide historic preservation organization, told the Princeton City Council in November that Princeton has 80 buildings eligible for the designation.

He also said the common misconception about possible restrictions being put on buildings once they’re officially listed within the district is unfounded. Butterfield said having a building on the National Register

of Historic Places actually attracts investors and makes renovations easier through the 20 percent tax credit.

Quiram thanked the efforts of Pam Lange, who spent many months and hours on the project, Michael Zearing, Melissa Steele Wendt, Scott Mehaffey, Butterfield and Terry Tatum, a professor at the Art Institute in Chicago, who crafted and presented the city’s application to the Illinois Historical Sites Advisory Council.

“Without the commitment and love for our community by these individuals to make Princeton the best it can be for present and future generations, this would not have happened,” Quiram stated.

“It was a very time-consuming project,” said Lange, who reported that the Bureau County Genealogi-

cal Society and the Princeton Public Library also were helpful to her.

Steele and Zearing worked together to compile the data on 89 properties in the two districts that was submitted with the application.

Lange and Steele compiled information on the various properties in the 500 and 600 blocks of South Main Street, while Zearing worked on the properties in the 900 and 1,000 blocks of North Main Street. Other items added in the application were the fountain near the courthouse, brick streets, courthouse square and Darius Miller Park.

Quiram also cited the efforts of the city’s newly formed Historic Preservation Commission in making this a possibility.

Soil, water interactions topic of Feb. 20 event Extension webinar to take place at IVCC OGLESBY — Soil and water interactions will be the focus of a Soil and Water Management live webinar sponsored by University of Illinois Extension on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

The workshop will be held at University of Illinois Extension on the Illinois Valley Community College campus. Presentations will be delivered via PowerPoint and web conferencing from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

“Those attending will hear about the latest University of Illinois research on soil erosion and how extreme weather affects nutrient transport. Other presenters from Purdue, Georgia and Missouri will discuss cover crop selection, soil microbes and soil health tests,” said Duane Friend, University of Illinois Extension educator.

Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development names Rainee Jonassen ambassador OTTAWA — Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development (SRRC), formerly Easter Seals LBC, announced Rainee Jonassen is the 2018 ambassador. She is an adorable, smart, funny, lovable child who happens to struggle with Sensory Processing Disorder.

Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD, is when the brain has trouble organizing information from the senses. Sensory processing issues can impact a child’s social skills.

It can also cause difficulties in the classroom.

Although every person is unique, people with SPD usually fall into one of two categories, hypersensitive or hyposensitive. Rainee has hyposensitive Sensory Processing Disorder.

Hyposensitive (or undersensitive) children lack sensitivity to their surroundings. They might have a high tolerance for or indifference to pain. They may be “sensory seeking,” meaning they have a constant need to touch people or things — even when it’s not appropriate. They may also have trouble with personal space or be clumsy and uncoordinated. They might be constantly on the move and take risks on the playground, accidentally harming other kids when playing.

Rainee’s parents, Shane and Jackie, saw signs from infancy. Like many children with SPD, Rainee needed to be held much of the time.

By the time Rainee was 18 months, her symptoms became severe enough to affect normal functioning and dis-

“When Rainee was 18 months we were concerned because she was constantly fidgeting, didn’t have an

interest in playing, was not speaking much at all and rarely made eye contact, said Jackie. “She would constantly run into the couch or other things and spent hours lining up and organizing toys.”

Her parents expressed their concerns to their pediatrician who referred the family to SRRC. Rainee began developmental and speech therapy and eventually attended toddler class in Ottawa. She also received OT services.

Therapy depends on a child’s individual needs. But in general, it involves helping children do better at activities they’re normally not good at and helping them get used to things they can’t tolerate.

“Rainee will lead a normal life, said Kelly Bault, developmental therapist at SRRC. “She will just have to work a little harder than a typical child. Kids don’t grow out of Sensory Processing Disorder; they grow into it, unless we spot it and treat it — the sooner, the better.”

Rainee still has many problems daily, but they are a lot more manageable. She is now playing with dolls, socializing with other kids and even participating in a dance class.

Without SRRC, none of this would be possible, said Shane.

A few facts on Early Intervention and Sensory Processing Disorder: • Children’s brains are most pliable before the age of 7, which means you have a better chance of helping them overcome the problem at a much faster pace then you would

have after the age of 7. Also by then some of the behaviors or issues can be very difficult to break.

• Having a diagnosis can help families who are appalled, worried or at a loss as to what to do with their child. Getting them diagnosed and help early on helps families learn to understand the disorder and reasons for their behavior instead of just building up anger against the child as they get older and the behaviors don’t stop.

• When children have SPD they often have many different symptoms of the disorder, early intervention will help to fix the problem but also will help to prevent other problems developing because of the main issues at hand wasn’t worked on early on.

SRRC provides quality developmental, speech and physical therapy services to children who have a developmental delay or are at risk for developmental delay. Screenings are provided free of charge in Ottawa and at locations throughout LaSalle and Bureau counties. SRRC also has a structured toddler class in Ottawa and Peru for 2 year olds, a child care center in Ottawa for children with and without special needs from 6 months old until 12 years old and beyond if there is a special need, and an Autism Resource Center on site in Ottawa. SRRC’s mission is to provide quality services to children with and without special needs and their families so that they have equal opportunity to live, learn and play in their community.

The goal of Princeton Buddy Bags is to bridge the gap when free or reduced school meals are not available. Hungry children perform worse in school.

This year, Princeton Buddy Bags is holding a “Sponsor a Child” fundraiser. The group spends $25 per child per month to fill bags with readyto-eat meals, snacks and drinks. They are mailing out hundreds of letters to past donors asking them to sponsor a child for $25 a month for 12 months or help by making any monetary donation.

On Monday, Feb. 5, the PPL program at 10 a.m. will be “Farm Stew and You” with Joy Kauffman. The Monday Movie will be at 6:30 p.m. For Black History Month, a chronicle of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965.

On Tuesday, Feb. 6, the PPL program will be at 10:30 a.m., with storytime and a dragon craft.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, the PPL program at 3:30 p.m. will be Jr. High Book Club Game Day. The 6:30 p.m. program will be “Chicks with Sticks.”

The Covered Bridge Chorus will perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Princeton Public Library. This local Barbershop Chorus has been singing together for more than 60 years. They will perform a variety of songs. This program is free to the public and all are welcome.

The library again participated in the Trex Challenge, which was to collect at least 500 pounds of plastic bags in six months to receive a free Trex bench made out of recycled plastic. The challenge officially began on Oct. 1 and the library met the goal on Jan. 17. The challenge limits the number of benches to two per year, therefore, as of Jan. 30, they will no longer collect plastic for recycling and will remove the collection box from the entryway. This will give them time to deliver the backlog of bags they accumulated.

Bishop Daniel Jenky, Diocese of Peoria, recently granted St. Margaret’s permission to take possession of this nativity scene that had been part of the Immaculate Conception parish.

Crafted in 1898, this piece was one of the few things that survived the fire of 1917 that ravaged the parsonage and church, sparing the school. St. Margaret’s thanked Bishop Jenky for this honor, and they are especially grateful to Jane Kunkel for her efforts in securing this piece of art and religious history. TRIUMPH — The Waltham Curling Club in Triumph is offering numerous curling opportunities for the public and media in coordination with the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

There will be two open house sessions. The first from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 will be a free session open to all individuals age 8 and above. This session will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The club will attempt to get all attendees some amount of instruction and ice-time. The amount of ice-time will be subject to the number of people attending.

There will also be an open house event from 9 a.m. from 9 p.m. with pre-registration available. Cost is $5 for a 45-minute reserved session. Each session is limited to 24 individuals.

Registration will be available at www. walthamcurling.org. Advance registration and payment will be required.

Guests will receive instruction and the opportunity to play.

Additional activities may also be scheduled as specific Olympic curling event and TV schedules are released.

Princeton Shootout PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigers Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 25th annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 24-25 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High. Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grades 7-8 brackets Saturday and in the Grades 5-6 brackets Sunday.

Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during both days. There will also be a 3-Point Shot and a Hot-Shot competition.

IVCC softball clinic OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 19th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18, in IVCC’s gym. Coaches and current

players will offer softball instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

There will be two sessions each day.

On Saturday, participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and participants in grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, grades 2-4 will meet 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and grades 5-8 from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. If a player can only come one day, the cost is $20.

All players should bring a glove and tennis shoes (no spikes or cleats allowed). If a player has her own bat, she is allowed to bring it. Please make sure all items have the player’s name on them for identification purposes.

Bruins Spring Training PERU — The St. Bede Academy baseball program will present the Spring Training Baseball Clinic March 3 and March 10-11 for boys ages 6-14. Vicini to be inducted into Ottawa High School Hall of Fame

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com Former Hall coach Gary Vicini will be inducted into the Ottawa Township Hall of Fame the weekend of Feb. 9-10.

Vicini (class of 1972) was a standout multisport athlete at Ottawa, excelling in football, basketball and baseball.

At the time of his graduation, he was the all-time leading rusher with 1,821 yards over two football seasons, twice rushing for 168 yards in a game. He finished his career with 2,167 yards of total offense.

He went on to play football and

baseball at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Vicini spent his entire teaching and coaching career at Hall, where he worked from 1976 to 2009. While he also coached baseball for 17 years, softball and girls track for eight years, he made his name as the Red Devils football coach.

He became the head varsity coach in 1984, compiling a record of 195-80, while qualifying for the state playoffs 20 times in 25 years. His teams compiled a 32-18 playoff record with two state 3A championships (1995, 2001) and a 3A runners-up finish (1996).

Vicini was elected into the Illinois

High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the inaugural Hall High School Hall of Fame in 2010.

The former St. Bede standout and first team All-BCR pick scored 28 points against Sauk Valley and 20 points with six rebounds and four assists against Carl Sandburg.

• Pirates on the move: As expected, Ottawa has approved leaving the Northern Illinois Big 12 in favor of a new conference beginning with the school year 2019-20. It is one of five schools to leave the NIB12, along

with Geneseo, Rochelle, L-P and Morris, who will be joining Sandwich and Plano out of the Interstate Eight, to form a new conference.

“I think it is a good fit for Ottawa High School with some old traditional NCIC schools that we have been with for a long time,” Ottawa athletic director Mike Cooper told the BCR. • 8 men out: According to the NUIC, league member Polo will move to 8-man football in the 2019 season. Development group touts region at Chicago event Execs learn of Illinois Valley opportunities CHICAGO — More than 800 commercial and industrial real estate executives attended the 2018 Real Estate Forecast event in downtown Chicago on Jan. 17.

North Central Illinois (NCI) Economic Development Corp., based in Oglesby, was one of the primary sponsors of the event, and promoted the region at the exhibit hall and during the Industrial Development Panel.

“The market for industrial development in northern Illinois is great,” Kenneth Szady, national director for Marcus and Millichap, said.

This sentiment was echoed by more than two dozen real estate executives at meetings and breakout sessions, sponsored by the Illinois Real Estate Journal.

Dan Smolensky, principal of Taurus Modal Group, said: “Opportunities are tremendous. Vacancy rates are low, demand is high, and industrial development is hot in northeastern Illinois/metro Chicago.”

Executives pointed out concerns about taxes and uncertainty in the state fiscal climate. Yet, those issues are not countering the enthusiasm and optimism of the market.

“Companies want to be where the

people are,” Tony Pricco, principal of Bridge Development Partners, said. “They are following the consumer market.”

As a result, communities and industrial sites located far from the population centers, or O’Hare, are having a harder time in attracting interest.

“But, rural and exurban areas can be aggressive with full-service properties, aggressive incentives, and labor skills to secure their fair share of this exciting industrial market,” Jeff Bennett, president of McColly Bennett Commercial, said.

North Central Illinois Economic Development Corp. is prominently being featured at regional industrial real estate events sponsored by the Illinois Real Estate Journal, CoreNet Global, Association of Industrial Real Estate, and Society of Industrial and Office Realtors.

“The Chicago region market is dynamic,” Ivan Baker, NCI president, said, “and we must be in front of the decision-makers and brokers in order to have our sites reviewed.”

The annual January Real Estate Forecast is one of the largest meetings of top northern Illinois brokers and developers.
