The PROMise of prom ... and popcorn The fourth annual PROMise donation drive begins

PRINCETON — Whether a student or a parent, the prom is unavoidable. What began in the late 19th Century as simple co-ed banquets to celebrate the end of the school year at universities, the prom slowly evolved by the 1930s-1940s into an event which is more comparable to today’s prom. As teenage culture continued to grow and exert its cultural influence through the decades, the prom eventually grew into the modern extravagance it is today. And extravagance, as we all know, is expensive.

In 2012, after seeing two seemingly unrelated stories on the nightly news, Princeton native Amy Thompson made a connection between the struggling economy and the struggles of any family trying to fund a magical night in the school gym.

“How do families afford prom when they are so strapped for cash?” wondered Thompson.

“Prom is such an important event for high-schoolers, especially girls, to experience. It is one of the times in a girl’s life that she gets to feel like Cinderella. It breaks my heart to think someone wouldn’t be able to go to prom because they couldn’t afford a dress. I am always concerned about kid’s self esteem.

By giving girls the opportunity to buy a beautiful dress they might not otherwise be able to afford, making them feel beautiful, is very important to me,” said Thompson.

Thompson, along with help from her family, friends, volunteers and church, held the first PROMise sale in 2013. The PROMise sale promotion drive asks for donations of new and gently-used prom, pageant, homecoming and special occasion dresses for young ladies, women and, for the first time this year, little girls. They are also accepting accessories, including jewelry, purses and shoes. Anyone donating a prom dress five years old or newer will receive special passes to the pre-sale event the night before the sale.

Thompson also enlisted the help of friends Jay and Lara Schneider, owners of the Apollo Theater.

“I asked them if they would be willing to donate a bucket of popcorn to anyone who brought in a prom dress donation for the PROMise sale. They are great people, so generous, and they have agreed every year to help me,” said Thompson.

On average the sale receives about 400 dresses a year. Since its inception, the sale has had a total of 1,396 dresses donated and has sold about 500. The dresses which don’t sell are taken to The Closet. The PROMise sale has raised $6,417, and 100 percent of the proceeds has been donated. Half of the proceeds go toward children and youth ministries within

Thompson’s church, and during the first two years the other half went to the Living Works suicide prevention program.

“Last year and this year we are donating to the Bureau County Food Pantry. It was important to me to donate to organizations that would benefit youth as prom is for youth,” said Thompson.

This year’s promotion will run from Jan. 22-28.

OmniArts accepting grant applications OmniArts in Starved Rock Country, an organization dedicated to supporting local artists and art organizations, is accepting applications for OmniArts Award Grants 2016.

OmniArts will award Special Purpose Grants to full-time, nonprofit music, art and theatre organizations. Program grants will be awarded to schools, libraries and community groups. The grant application instructions and forms will be sent directly to any interested organization by contacting OmniArts by email at billj@omniarts. org. The deadline for grant applications will be March 30. Grants will be awarded on April 13.

OmniArts has supported the arts in Starved Rock Country by providing funding to artists, cultural groups, art organizations, community theatres, schools and libraries. Most recently, these grants

have helped more than 1,400 artists and 700 volunteers with a collective audience of more than 22,000 in the Starved Rock Country region. Last year more than $16,600 was awarded.

“We are able to provide grants to these organizations because of the generosity of people and corporations who donate to our annual fund campaign,” said executive director Bill Jankowski. “Money we receive from the annual fund donations is given back to the ones who need it most … the arts, music, dance, theatre … this will provide artists and art organizations the support they need to be successful.”

“The more people and businesses donate the more we can provide. No other local art organization provides the financial support we provide to keep the arts alive in our communities,” Jankowski added.

Area youth attend 4-H officer training A multi-county 4-H officer training was held at the University of Illinois Extension, IVCC Campus, to introduce youth to the importance of responsible leadership, how to organize a club meeting or activity, and how to practice their leadership skills in 4-H. Youth from Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties learned techniques to help their 4-H clubs successfully accomplish club goals and create a positive learning experience for their members. Through fun, holiday-themed activities, youth learned about parliamentary procedure, facilitating group activities, and how to make 4-H meetings fun. The training helped prepare youth to become successful peer leaders with their 4-H clubs.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Princeton Peace and Justice Roundtable hosted its third annual Martin Luther King Day celebration on Monday, Jan. 18. The event was held at Open Prairie United Church of Christ, and included a round-table format, a short film clip of King, music, dialogue about advancing peace and justice in today’s world. There were also events for students.

About 40 people attended the event. Pictured is the group singing “Let there be peace on earth.”

Walter to present program Jan. 28 on Volga Germans and their migrations PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogy Society will meet Thursday, Jan. 28, and Michael Walter, a native of Billings, Mont., will be the featured speaker.

Walter and his wife, Viola, are currently residing in Princeton and are working at the Bureau County Courthouse as volunteers on behalf of FamilySearch in a project of digitizing both probate and naturalization records. Before coming here they had been doing a similar task in Mercer County.

Walter’s presentation at 7 p.m. is titled, “Origin,

Migration, Sojourn, Exodus, Demise and Future of the Volga Germans, pre-1766 to present.”

The talk will cover the routes and experiences of their migration (for some 30,000) at the invitation of Catherine the Great in 1767-69.

Their century-plus sojourn in the new land, from their earliest struggles to life in a multitude of newly-founded colonies, will be described.

The audience will discover the reasons for their emigration back out of Russia to other world locations after swelling to a population of more

than 500,000.

He will discuss the unfortunate demise of Germans left behind in Russia and will continue with the history of these people to this day.

The program is free and open to the public at the Society library located at 629 S. Main St. in Princeton.

Meet the Directors Night is Feb. 5 STREATOR — Community Players of Streator Inc. will host its annual Meet the Directors Night at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at the theatre. This is a chance to meet the 2016 directors, learn more about the season and discover opportunities to get involved both on stage and off stage in the coming year.

The 2016 season is a delightful mix of musicals, comedies and a drama.

“Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Tyler Reviglio of Peru, opens the season. An alien plant, a crazed dentist, a blonde bombshell and three sassy divas create a delectable scifi horror musical with an electrifying 1960’s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashford. Performance dates are May 15-21.

Audiences will be delighted June 12-18 by the comedy “Don’t Dress for Dinner.”

Join in the laughter as hidden identities and outrageous infidelities are exposed in Marc Camoletti’s sequel to Boeing-Boeing. With his wife out of town, an alibi from his best friend and a gourmet chef to add culinary spice, Bernard has the perfect romantic evening planned for his French mistress — or so he thinks. Doug Bartlet of Streator is the show’s director.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical — “Mary Poppins.” Directed by Darcy Mollo of Streator, jack-of-all-trades Bert introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on the scene. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again.

Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” Performance dates are July 9-16.

Engle Lane’s annual children and youth production will be “Godspell Jr.,” directed

by Jeff Houk of Ottawa. Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew and drawing from various theatrical traditions such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, “Godspell Jr.” is a ground breaking and unique reflection of the life of Jesus with a message of kindness, tolerance, acceptance and love. Performance dates are Aug. 7-13.

The drama “Proof” will run Sept. 11-17.

Directed by Joe Ennenbach of Peru, “Proof”

tells the story of Catherine, a troubled young woman who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions, the arrival of her estranged sister Claire and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s how hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind.

How much of her father’s madness — or genius — will she inherit?

The 2016 season concludes with a new musical comedy, “The Addams Family,” directed by Nik Frig of Ottawa. This hilarious musical comedy tells the story every father’s nightmare as Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family — a man her parents have never met. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. Show dates are Oct. 16-22.

In addition to the regular season line up, there are two special productions scheduled this year. Feb. 25-28, Samantha Farb of Lostant will direct the musical “The Last Five Years,” an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their 20s who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy telling her story backwards while Jamie tells his story chronologically. The two characters meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

Kathy Hepner of Streator will direct “The Guys” Nov. 11-13. Less than two weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them, an editor named Joan, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help with the eulogies he must present at their memorial service. With this production, Engle Lane honors the brave first responders 15 years after the 9/11 attacks.

IVCH Foundation Ball raises more than $30,000 More than 160 friends of Illinois Valley Community Hospital turned out Saturday, Jan. 16, for the IVCH Foundation’s 28th annual benefit ball at Celebrations 150 Results are still being tabulated, but as of that day, the event had generated more than $30,000 in donations to the foundation, which will use the money to help provide medical equipment and services the hospital might otherwise have to delay purchasing. Among the foundation committee members who helped plan the ball are George (from left) and Elaine Buckman, and Lisa and Tommy Hobbs, who is IVCH’s chief executive officer. With the biggest football game penciled in on pigskin-lovers’ calendars, it’s always fun to invite a group of friends over to watch the game. Rowdy football gatherings aren’t complete without a table filled with fun foods to enjoy before, during and after the game. Try some of these easy appetizer-type recipes to fill the gang up during your party.

Spicy Sausage Balls 1 pound spicy pork sausage 10 ounces Cheddar cheese, grated 3 cups baking mix, such as Bisquick, or self-rising flour Salt and pepper Preheat the oven to 375°. Using a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the sausage, cheese and baking mix and beat on low speed until blended.

Add pepper to taste. Shape the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookies sheet. Bake until browned, about 20 minutes. Drain on paper towels, sprinkle with salt and serve hot, warm or at room temperature.

Chicken Bites 8 chicken tenders or breast cutlets, flattened and cut in half 2 3-ounce packages cream cheese, softened 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped 16 slices bacon Preheat the oven to 400°. Top each piece of chicken with 1 teaspoon cream cheese and 1/4 teaspoon chopped jalapeno. Roll up each filling-covered chicken piece and

wrap with 1 slice of bacon, securing with a toothpick. Transfer to a baking sheet and place in the oven for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through. You can also cook these on an outdoor grill: Grill for 8 to 10 minutes, turning once.

Sticky Japanese Chicken Wings 3 pounds chicken wings 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup all-purpose flour for coating 1 cup butter Sauce 3 tablespoons soy sauce 3 tablespoons water 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup white vinegar 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste 1 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350°. Cut wings in half, dip in egg and coat with flour. Heat butter in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry wings until deep brown. Place in a shallow roasting pan. In a small bowl combine soy sauce, water, sugar, vinegar, garlic powder and salt. Pour over wings.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, basting wings with sauce often.

Loaded Baked Tater Tot Dip 3 cups Tater Tots (about 45 whole Tater Tots), thawed and halved or roughly chopped 1 cup meatballs, crumbled precooked shredded chicken, chicken nuggets, tofu, bacon or bacon bits 16 ounces sour cream (regular or light)

ATTENTION READERS:

2 cups shredded cheese blend, divided (blend of Colby, jack, mozzarella, Monterrey Jack) 2 teaspoons all-purpose seasoning blend, or to taste (Lowry’s, Trader Joe’s 21 Salute, Mrs. Dash, a pinch of garlic or onion powder) Salt and pepper, optional and to taste Preheat oven to 375°. Spray a 9-inch pie dish or similar oven-safe baking dish with cooking spray; set aside. Slice thawed tater tots in half or place a large pile on cutting board and roughly chop them; retain some size and texture and don’t chop them too small. Transfer tater tots to a large mixing bowl. Add the meat, sour cream, 1 cup cheese, seasoning blend, salt, pepper, and stir to combine.

Transfer mixture to prepared baking dish, smoothing the top lightly with a spatula. Top with remaining 1 cup cheese.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until top is bubbly and golden browned. Serve immediately with crackers, bread, pita chips or pita bread, tortilla chips or dip Tater Tots into it. Store leftover dip in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to three days.

Cheesy Bacon Spinach Dip 6 slices bacon, diced 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 cups baby spinach, chopped 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided Salt and ground black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add bacon and cook until brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Preheat oven to 400°. Lightly oil a 9-inch baking dish or coat with nonstick spray.

In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan, mayonnaise and Worcestershire. Stir in bacon, spinach, 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup cheddar cheese; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Spread bacon mixture into the prepared baking dish; sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup cheeses. Place into oven and bake until bubbly and golden, about 20-25 minutes. Serve immediately, garnished with bacon and parsley, if desired.

Three Meat and Cheese Stromboli 4 1-pound loaves frozen bread dough, thawed 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli salami 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli ham 1/2 pound thinly sliced pepperoni 1/2 pound thinly sliced provolone cheese 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup grated Romano or Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1 teaspoon pepper 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten Let dough rise until doubled, according to package directions. Punch down. Roll each loaf into a 15-by-12-inch rectangle.

Arrange a fourth of the salami, ham, pepperoni and provolone cheese over each rectangle. Sprinkle each with a fourth of the mozzarella cheese, Romano cheese, garlic powder, oregano, parsley and pepper.

Roll up each rectangle jelly-roll style, beginning with a long side. Seal seams and ends. Place seam side down on two greased baking sheets. Brush with egg yolk.

Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm. Refrigerate leftovers.

Pack the Place Purple MANLIUS — The 3rd annual Pack The Place Purple Night at Bureau Valley High School will be held Feb. 2 for the Storm vs.

Kewanee Boilermakers boys basketball game. The event will start at the beginning of the sophomore game at 6 p.m. and go until half time of the varsity game.

There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle during this time, and prizes will be handed out during half time of the Varsity. All money donated will going to the Dax Locke Foundation in honor of Cora Peters.

IVCC softball clinic

OGLESBY— Illinois Valley Community College’s softball team will host the 17th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Sat-

urday and Sunday, Feb. 13 and 14, in IVCC’s gym. Coaches and current players will offer instruction in hitting, bunting, fielding, throwing, base running and communication.

Participants in grades 2-4 will meet from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sunday. Grades 5-8 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cost of the clinic is $30 per player and includes five hours of instruction and a clinic T-shirt. If a player can only come one day, the cost is $20.

All players should bring a glove and tennis shoes (no spikes or cleats allowed). If a player has her own bat, she is allowed to bring it. Please make sure all items have the player’s name on them for identification purposes.

PERU — The St. Bede Bruins baseball team will hold its Spring Training Baseball Clinic in March. Session 1 for ages 6-8 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 5. Session II for ages 9-11 will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 6. Session III for ages 12-14 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 12.

Instructors for the clinic will be St. Bede coaches and players, headed by varsity coach Bill Booker. Participants will learn baseball fundamentals for the upcoming season. Sessions will focus on hitting, field, throwing, bunting, pitch and catching skills.

YL Curling Outing

TRIUMPH — The Bureau County Farm Bureau Young Leader Committee will take part in the annual District 4 YL Curling outing from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at the Waltham Curling Club in Triumph.

All participants in the curling activity will have to sign a liability waiver before they can play.

All are asked to wear clean tennis shoes. The cost is $20 per person to curl.

Princeton Shootout

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 23rd annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 27-28 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grade 7-8 brackets Feb. 27 and in the Grade 5-6 brackets Feb. 28. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout both days. In addition, a 3-point shot and Hot Shot competition will also be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day. Tournament T-shirts can be purchased at all admission gates. Entry deadline is Feb. 1.
