Chamber brings Vegas to Princeton PRINCETON — It’s not Las Vegas, but it’s the closest thing around Bureau County. The Princeton Chamber of Commerce’s Casino Night Gala is set for Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Bureau County Metro Center. The doors and bar open at 6 p.m.; gaming and bingo begins at 7 p.m. Princeton Chamber Executive Director Kim Frey said this year’s event will hold all the excitement the past four years have offered — even more. Tickets are $25 per person, which includes admission and appetizers. A silent auction will be held throughout the evening, with the winners announced around 10:30 p.m. “We’re bringing Vegas to Princeton,” said Frey, adding event-goers will enjoy all their favorite games of chance like bingo, slot machines and more. The evening also includes an opportunity to step inside the Cash Cube — where participants can try to grab as many casino dollars as they can in 30 seconds. At the end of the evening, attendees will be able to buy a host of prizes through the silent auction using the casino dollars they have won. Cash is also accepted for the silent auction. Frey said some of the prizes include a Cubs/Cards game package, tickets to see Journey, an Apple Watch, a night on the town which includes a Festival 56 and Prime Quarter package, Chicago Bulls tickets and much more. Appetizers provided by Sullivan’s Foods in Princeton are included in the entrance fee and will offer something for every taste bud in the room, Frey said the annual Casino Night Gala is the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser of the year and the only one where the profits are used to implement a large number of programs to supplement and promote the business community. The other fundraisers hosted by the Chamber are earmarked for specific projects. “It’s going to be a blast,” Frey said. “We have some great prizes — many which are different than we’ve ever had before. What will you ever do with that old prom dress? Dress donations are needed for fifth annual PROMise Dress Sale By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Kick-off to the fifth annual PROMise Dress Sale is just around the corner. Amy Thompson, coordinator of the sale, is looking for gently-used dress donations to sell during this year’s event. Whether the dress was worn for homecoming, prom, a wedding, a Christmas party or maybe a cruise — Thompson will accept all shapes and sizes of these beautiful gowns. Thompson has again teamed up with Jay and Lara Schneider, owners of the Apollo Theater, to help raise awareness of the sale and collect dresses. To help add to the incentive to donate a dress, movie-goers who donate a dress at the Apollo Theater between Friday, Jan. 27, and Thursday, Feb. 2, will receive a free bucket of popcorn. This year’s PROMise Dress Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 11 at the First United Methodist Church. All dresses, new and pre-worn, are priced $50 or less. Those who donate a dress five years or newer will receive a VIP pass, which will allow them to shop the dresses the evening before the sale. VIP Friday will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 10. Thompson said her dress sale has grown in size since its inception five years ago. Last year’s shopping event sold around 100 dresses. And girls came from all over the area and beyond. Thompson said last year she had a shopper travel from San Antonio, Texas, who purchased a dress she had seen advertised on Facebook. While most shoppers who come to the

sale are looking for a prom dress, the event has also been known to attract some looking for attire to wear for a formal occasion, whether it be a party, cruise or wedding. While other shoppers just come and look for fun. Thompson said one year she even had a Grandma bring in her granddaughter who was looking for dress-up clothes. Aside from dresses, Thompson also collects shoes, purses, garters and accessories to sell. The proceeds from the PROMise Dress Sale are donated to two non-profit organizations geared toward helping children. This year, the First United Methodist Youth Ministry and CPASA (Community Partners Against Substance Abuse) will be the recipients. Thompson said with the heroin epidemic surrounding local communities and the ongoing issues with students and substance abuse, it’s important to continue the needed education for parents and students to help prevent these problems. “It’s easy to bury your head and say, ‘It’s not my kid.’ But it’s someone’s kid,” Thompson said. “We could all use more education on the issues.” Last year, PROMise Dress Sale split $3,000 between the Bureau County Food Pantry and First United Methodist Youth Ministry. The money to the food pantry helped purchase food for children in need. And money donated to the youth ministry went to a Mission Possible Kids project, which plans to pack 10,000 meals for children to help stop hunger. The packing event will be held Feb. 15.

‘Hidden in Plain Sight’
Will you notice the signs of drug abuse, depression, suicide? PRINCETON — On Feb. 2, MTM Recognition and Thrivent Financial will be cosponsoring “Hidden in Plain Sight” at the Bureau County Metro Center. Hidden in Plain Sight is presented by Community Partners Against Substance Abuse (CPASA), a community organization with more than 140 active members from all areas of the Bureau and Putnam counties community. It is CPASA’s mission to reduce substance abuse among youth in Bureau and Putnam counties, and over time, among adults by addressing the factors in our community that increases the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. Hidden in Plain Sight is an interactive event designed to give adults an idea of what to look for in regards to youth substance abuse, depression, and perhaps even suicide. Vendors will be available with literature to answer some of your questions on these topics. Attendees will do a “bedroom walk-
through” to see if they notice anything that might indicate the child inhabitant has an issue with depression or substance abuse. After a seminar conducted by local law enforcement, another tour through the room will enlighten people as to the many things that can indicate a child in need. The event is free and open to the public. There will be a light dinner provided, door prizes and a chance to win a 43-inch television. There will be free, supervised childcare available during the seminar (no children allowed for the seminar and discussion). Hidden in Plain Sight will start at 5:30 p.m. and end around 8:30 p.m. Reservations are not required. areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grades 7-8 brackets on Saturday, Feb. 25, and in the 5-6 brackets on Sunday, Feb. 26. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during both days. In addition, a 3-Point Shot and a Hot-Shot competition will also be held. OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College softball team will host the 18th annual IVCC Eagles Softball Clinic Feb. 18-19 in IVCC’s gym.
