The Putnam County Rotary Club visited Putnam County Junior High School on Jan. 10 as part of its district grant project to end polio. Eighth-graders received personal copies of “Small Steps,” a story about the author’s struggle with and recovery from polio. The students will also have an opportunity to submit essays and posters to enhance the project, and they’ll be instrumental in helping with fundraising efforts to help eliminate the disease worldwide.

Free volunteer tutor training set for Jan. 27 OGLESBY — The Adult Education Community Tutoring Program at Illinois Valley Community College will conduct free volunteer tutor training from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 27, in Room CTC221.

Volunteers must have a desire to work with adult learners and be willing to tutor 2 to 3 hours each week. Teaching experience is not necessary, however, 10 hours of training through the

program is required. Visiting an Adult Education classroom is an additional training component.

After completing training, volunteers have the option of tutoring in an English Language Acquisition class, an Adult Basic Education class or a High School Equivalency class. These classes follow the IVCC semester schedule in the spring and fall.

One-to-one tutoring might be available during summer months.

Free online tutor training is another option for volunteers whose schedules do not allow them to participate in the January training session. Visit www.ivcc.edu/communitytutoring for information.

PRINCETON — Singer-songwriter Michael McDermott, joined by his wife, Heather Horton, will perform at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.

McDermott, an Orland Park native, burst onto the folk rock scene in 1991 with the release of his first album, “620 W. Surf” (his address at the time in Chicago). Hailed as Rock’s “Next Big Thing,” he was touted by MTV, Rolling Stone, The New York Times and even author Stephen King who declared that McDermott was “possibly the greatest undiscovered rock n roll talent of the last 20 years.”

Despite this auspicious start, McDermott’s career foundered over the next couple of decades, as did his personal life. While continuing to release good material, he struggled with sustaining his early fame and with alcohol and drugs. In 2009, his life changed dramatically and happily when he married Horton, a singer, songwriter and fiddler in her own right. The next year their daughter Rain was born. Gaining sobriety and starting a family marked a new chapter in his life and career.

McDermott’s most recent album, “Willow Springs,” released in 2016, is named for the small town where he and his family now reside. MusicRiot (UK), in a rave review, described the album thus: “There’s a lot of acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle and harmonica, but also some subversive touches like adding synth pads to fill out the sound. There’s a desire not to be stereotyped and packaged … Willow Springs is, more than anything else, a deeply personal album, springing from a turbulent period

Climbing the family tree Tips for genealogical beginners from the Bureau County Genealogical Society

dcook@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — There’s nothing like icy, subzero temperatures to inspire an indoor project. One common thing we all likely have in our homes is an old photo album collecting dust on a bookshelf or forgotten in the attic.

As old photo albums are brought out for review, they’re typically accompanied by favorite family stories. This may make older family members realize their past could eventually disappear if not properly documented.

Younger family members, curious about their ancestors’ origins, may also have an interest in charting the past. But this can be a daunting task, especially when you consider how widespread the information can be and how deeply it could be hidden.

Thankfully, genealogy has become one of the nation’s favorite hobbies, surpassed only by gardening. Carol McGee of the Bureau County Genealogical Society provided some tips for those beginning the journey through their family tree.

McGee began researching her family’s history 30 years ago after finding pictures of her grandparents in an old trunk.

“By researching old records and talking to relatives, I learned what difficult lives they had and how they managed to do the best with what they had,” McGee said.

“Then I wanted to know more about my other ancestors, and I became addicted to adding to my family tree,” she said.

She added that television programs about genealogy tend to make it look like a simple process.

time consuming,” McGee said.

Beginning this process, however difficult, is better done sooner rather than later.

“If the last person in a generation passes away and family members start to ask questions, there’s no one there to answer them,” she said.

An interest in health history is another reason many get started with genealogy, especially if there’s an inherited disease.

“Adopted people often want to know the health history of their natural parents, and this is usually the main reason they want to learn about them,” she said.

McGee said beginners should obtain and fill out available pedigree and family group charts so it’s easy to organize what you know and don’t know.

Interviewing relatives is a critical first step, and federal census records and obituaries are a good place to obtain information.

“Always document your information by writing down the source and, if possible, take a genealogy class at your local genealogy society or attend a genealogical conference. Classes are also available online,” McGee said.

Some of the challenges people can expect to face during research include the difficulty in deciphering old handwriting, seeing various spellings of names, and the use of nicknames. There may also be relatives who aren’t willing to share information.

As earlier generations are researched, there will be fewer records, which can complicate a search. The destruction of war and past disasters, such as the Great Chicago Fire, can also complicate things.

Bureau County Genealogical Society member Esther Tracy conducts some historical research with the society’s extensive microfiche files. More than 100 years of newspapers from throughout the county are accessible through the society, and they contain an enormous amount of historical information beneficial to anyone researching their family history.

Many people with the same name living in the same area is another challenge.

“Getting the wrong person with your same name is a common error for beginners,” McGee said.

Genealogical societies can be an important tool for beginners because their members can answer questions and make suggestions. They can also teach people how to optimize online searches and save time. Additionally, the societies often have monthly educational speakers, newsletters and helpful websites.

“They can also have records you won’t see on the Internet, and most are willing to do research for you for a fee, if you’re unable to visit their facility,” McGee said.

ous residents than anywhere else. Their information has also been extensively indexed to allow them to quickly find requested knowledge. Public libraries with local history rooms can also be a good place to do research.

“Gravestones can also reveal unexpected information such as the town of birth in a foreign country or the maiden name of a married woman. Once in a while, you’ll also see an additional inscription on the back of a marker, so it’s important to take a look there, too,” McGee said.

Old family Bibles can be another valuable source of ancestral knowledge. McGee said there are often a few pages in between the Old and New Testaments where family history information could be written.

PRINCETON — On Thursday, Jan. 25, the Tigers Read PHS Book Club will meet at 10:45 a.m. and the PPL Board Game Night will be at 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, Jan. 29, Monday Movies will be at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Youth Services storytime and craft, bathtime paint day, will be at 10:30 a.m.

The library again participated in the Trex Challenge, which was to collect at least 500 pounds of plastic bags in six months to receive a free Trex bench made out of recycled plastic. The challenge officially began on Oct. 1 and the library met the goal on Jan. 17.

The challenge limits the number of benches to two per year, therefore, as of Jan. 30, they will no longer collect plastic for recycling and will remove the collection box from the entryway. This will give them time to deliver the backlog of bags they accumulated.

In addition to being able to come into the Princeton Public Library to use its computers or access its free wireless connection, patrons can also check out one of the library’s five new Hotspot Wi-Fi devices to take home. The borrower must be a library card holder, 18 or older, and in good standing with the library. First-time users must sign an acknowledgement form at the circulation desk prior to checkout. The device can only be checked out for seven days, and will not be renewable. When checking out the Hotspot, the borrower will receive the

device, a power cord, an instruction manual, and a carrying case. All items must be returned at the same time to the front desk during business hours in order to avoid a late fee. They cannot be returned using the drop box locations. The overdue fine is $1 per day.

Failure to return the Hotspot and accessories within four weeks after the original due date will result in a charge to the cardholder’s account of $100 with a $15 additional charge for the adapter. Hand the case and its contents directly to a library staff member. The user assumes responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement in the event that Wi-Fi Hotspot or its accessories are lost, stolen or damaged. The Princeton Public Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. Users are prohibited from using Wi-Fi Hot spots in any way that violates federal, state, and municipal laws. Users are encouraged to follow safe Internet practices. SPRING VALLEY — Linda Sigmon Byrd, volunteer field genealogist and member of Princeton DAR chapter, will conduct a workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, and welcomes women of all ages to attend.

Come and learn more about NSDAR and what qualifies as a patriot. You will learn how to determine if you have an “approved” patriot

and how to conduct your search. She will share search tips and will help participants in their own search. The program is free and will last about 1 1/2 hours.

Lego Play is a new program for children ages 8-16 to create masterpieces with Legos.

Legos will be provided by the library. Any child under 7 must be accompanied by an adult and will be given Duplo blocks to build with during the program, if they so desire.

Please do not bring in any Legos to the program, respect the creativity of others, leave the Legos at the library, and have fun. This free program will be held once a month the third Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Call the library at 815-663-4741 with any questions.

The library in Spring Valley is collecting aluminum cans with the proceeds supporting the library and local scouts. Cans may be dropped off at the library during its hours of operation. The Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library Board of Trustees will hold meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. in the meeting room at the library.

WYANET — The library provides computer classes to patrons on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The classes are taught by Ethan Sproul and James Smith.

BUDA — The library is open 1 to 5 p.m.

IVCC team fundraiser

TRIUMPH — The Waltham Curling Club in Triumph is offering numerous curling opportunities for the public and media in coordination with the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

There will be two open house sessions. The first from 5 to 9 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 23, will be a free session open to all individuals age 8 and above. This session will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The club will attempt to get all attendees some amount of instruction and ice-time. The amount of ice-time will be subject to the number of people attending. There will also be an open house event from 9 a.m. from 9 p.m. with pre-registration available. Cost is $5 for a 45-minute reserved session. Each session is limited to 24 individuals.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the grades 7-8 brackets Saturday and in the grades 5-6 brackets Sunday.

between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during both days. In addition, a 3-Point Shot and a Hot-Shot competition will also be held.

Residents can tour county jail to see conditions there Sheriff: Tours will educate county residents PRINCETON — Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed announced in an effort to further educate county residents about the issues and concerns involving the deterioration of the existing jail, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office will offer tours of the jail to residents of Bureau County.

The tours are limited to a maximum of 10 individuals, and people must be at least 18 years of age to attend.

The tours normally last around 45 minutes.

The facility entrance is handicap accessible, however, most of the jail is not. A portion of the tour involves the use of stairs.

Anyone interested in touring the jail should contact the Sgt. Dexter Hansen, jail superintendent, by calling 815-872-3091, ext.

The reach of the Internet has allowed many to begin learning of their family history in the comfort of their homes and save both time and money.

“Although the Internet has many records, it may not have what’s needed.

Other sources still need to be checked, especially if you’re an advanced researcher,” she said.
