Dream interpretation Open Prairie to gather and discuss the legacy of MLK

PRINCETON — The Open Prairie United Church of Christ will be hosting its third annual Martin Luther King Day celebration at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18. Pictured are organizers of the event, who are at the Princeton Public Library looking over materials about Dr. Martin Luther King.

The last two have been at the Prouty Building, but this year’s event will be at the church located at 25 E. Marion St. in Princeton.

The format this year will differ from previous years with attendees gathering in a round-table format. There will also be a youth round table for junior high and high school students who would like to share their thoughts on Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of peace, as well as a children’s table with activities.

Hosting the event at the Open Prairie Church will allow this gathering to be more interactive and flexible than previous MLK Day events. There will be presentations of videos and speeches featuring King, as well as thoughtful discussions.

Seminars of assembly Princeton handyman offers workshops to local youth to fortify their industrial know how

PRINCETON — What happens when we no longer know how to cut a sheet of metal, properly tighten a plumbing pipe into place, or fasten boards together into furniture that actually stands? Ray Mabry isn’t about to find out.

Mabry, a Princeton resident, believes teaching young children hands-on skills will vastly enhance them on a personal and professional level, regardless of the intellectual abilities with which they were blessed. Mabry and area carpenters are currently renovating a building on Sixth Street in Princeton just north of Ye Olde Underground Inn with plans to begin classrooms that will educate children, ages 6 to 13, on the importance and endurance of industrial arts.

“I grew up in an era where we learned hands-on skills, and somewhere along the line we lost that,” Mabry said, mentioning quality professionals such as plumbers and carpenters are booked solid these days because they are in limited supply, making industrial skills more vital than ever.

The design of the building will allow students to assemble their items in a classroom setting with a separate shop area where students or adults, depending on the age, would be cutting the parts needed for composition. The assembly room will house a projector used to further the lesson plan, and initial plans have younger participants building kites, model rocketry, wooden airplanes, birdhouses, wooden toolboxes and saw horses, with senior developers constructing something more challenging.

In the workshop area, boys and girls will be cutting, drilling and assembling, and all projects will include the creator’s name and the date to add ownership to the accomplishment, Mabry said. Although it’s good shop class is still in the high school curriculum, the structure may be lacking for adolescents, and “We want to grab the kids at an early age and diversify them.”

A new, local place with lots of action for gaming enthusiasts

PRINCETON — Bill Cox has gone from driving a semi truck down the roads to now owning gaming parlors.

Cox is the owner of Vega’s located at 100 S. Main St. in Princeton which opened its doors in December. He opened another Vega’s in Kewanee this week with plans for one in Galva in February.

“My goal is to have 10 of them by the end of next year,” he said with plans for parlors in Milan, Dixon and Colona in the works. The state of Illinois only allows each parlor to have five gaming machines.

Cox used to work for Consolidated Freightways out of Peru before the firm went out of business. He also worked at many other places before ending up in Afghanistan working for a contractor.

His cousin’s family has been in the amusement and vending businesses since the 1940s and had been involved in gaming parlors in Illinois since the state first started allowing them to open their doors.

“When I was driving a truck, I met a lot of people in small towns and felt comfortable here (in Princeton),” he said. “I also knew CF guys who lived

weren’t actively involved in sports, and I tell people they probably got that from their father,” Mabry chuckled, adding you know you’re in trouble when you’re the last kid chosen for dodge ball. “I’m glad they’ve stuck around because I’ve got grandchildren now approaching the age where I think they’d enjoy coming into a setting like this and learning with their hands.”

Mabry noted the many local industries with “help wanted” signs in their front yard, and the idea is to avoid having to educate new employees on the primary skills they could have been taught in a shop class environment. Princeton certainly offers sporting activities to youth in the area, and Mabry sees the classroom as another niche where individuals can find unique instruction if they so desire.

“I think we’ll be planting a seed, and whether they go on to use these skills in a manufacturing role or a handyman role when they own a home, the goal will be to teach them,” he added.

Mabry plans on a soft roll out in February 2016, with eight to 10 students in each class. The classes will last for a few hours each — the breaking point of an underage attention span — and parents are welcome to attend the fabrication forums taught by volunteers from the community.

Students will be able to sign up online, and Mabry said they’ll tweak the schedule as is needed depending on length or complexity of projects. Princeton businesses have offered resources like lumber, if needed, because “they understand what we’re trying to do.” And Mabry said even at 56, he stills learns new tricks of the trade on a daily basis.

“We’ll show a young person they can build a model airplane, drill the holes and help sand, and once they take it home and show their friends, they’ll want to come back for more classes,” he said, adding in the age of technology it’s still nice to be exposed to creativity without batteries.

“We want this to be safe, fun and worthwhile, so when students go from here, it has been an all positive experience for them.”

A man of many tools, Ray Mabry is currently working on fixing up his building on Sixth Street in Princeton north of Ye Olde Underground Inn. Beginning in February, Mabry will be offering industrial arts classes for children age six to 13, with both a shop and classroom setting assisting his educational efforts.

Princeton native Ray Mabry is instituting an educational arena for adolescents and teenagers that deals with industrial arts basics.

Likely beginning in February, students will learn to build model airplanes, birdhouses, sawhorses and other artifacts from scratch.

Cox said the people of Princeton have been very, very nice to him and easy to work with during the six months from the time he started the process to opening the parlor’s doors in town.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Cox said Vega’s is different from other gaming parlors in town with a giant winning wheel that customers can spin to either win extra money or promotional materials.

“We are unique in this location,” he said. “There is no charge to get a ticket and spin the wheel. One name is pulled out of those tickets from customers at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a special weekly prize.”

He plans on having a gift certificate for a meal or $100 in cash as a prize for Valentine’s Day. He had a special drawing on New Year’s Eve. He also wants to have a players club where customers can win $5 free play money.

Bob Anderson is Cox’s operations manager for his parlors and said a town the size of Princeton can support three to four gaming parlors.

“People like to go to parlors,” said Anderson. “It is an easier environment, especially for elderly people. Seth Strong Benefit set to support Woolley in his battle with cancer

PRINCETON — Seth Woolley is a fighter, but fortunately, he’s not just a oneman army.

In 2013, Woolley was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, beating it then, but since its return, he is fighting harder. And his family, friends and community are right alongside him promising to help him do it again. On Saturday, Jan. 23, a benefit will be hosted for Woolley at Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton, showing once again his family, friends and the community are beside him every step of the way.

Earlier this year, Woolley’s cancer returned, and he underwent several strong chemo treatments followed by a stem cell transplant to try and get rid of the disease once and for all. But more recently, a spot on his chest revealed a 50/50 chance of its return.

“The strongest emotion after hearing the news initially was anger, honestly ...,” Woolley admits.

“Because, you know, having to go through a stem cell transplant — putting all that work in and how hard it was — then basically in your mind it’s just like telling you it wasn’t enough. You didn’t do enough. It’s just frustrating and hard.”

While it’s devastating

enough to hear such a diagnosis the first time, and then to even beat it ... but what happens when it continues to haunt you?

Just when it seems like the battle is won, the cancer pops up again, but an even stronger mass remains constant through it all, running deeper than any cancer ever could.

“My family, friends, my girlfriend, Amy, — she’s been my absolute rock through this entire thing,” Woolley said, who has clearly weathered his fair share of hard times, but these people give him hope and a strong foundation.

“I’m lucky really; some people have to go through this with very little support system, but I have the most loving family. They’re the most supportive people in the world.”

And not just his family and friends, but also “the entire community. They’ve supported me through the whole process,” he said.

And you can bet those same people and more will show their heads at the benefit to show Woolley he is worth the fight. Join them from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Metro Center for the Seth Strong Benefit to enjoy appearances from the local band 212 as well as David Mills of Long Ladder Home; a barbecue dinner; basketball; raffles; a 50/50 drawing; and a silent auction.

be purchased in advance from Central Bank of Princeton, The Kompany, the Heartland Bank main branch on South Main Street in Princeton, or committee members (Angie Lucas, Chris Rabe, Deb Harrison and Sara Hudson) for $15, or $20 at the door. Children 3 and under are free.

While there will no doubt be something for everyone at the event, the main reason for attending is to support a young many who has fought hard and deserving of support. For years now he has shown that giving up is not an option.

“Anybody is capable of doing anything. When you feel like you’re ready to give up you have to dig just a little bit deeper because you’ll find a way to get through it and realize that there’s an even stronger person inside of you that you didn’t know,” he said.

Using Pillsbury Crescent dough to make a fun-filled meal is all the rage. Following are a few recipes that will more than likely get your taste buds ready for thinking up some of your own Crescent ring ideas.

Spicy Italian Crescent Ring 2 8-ounce cans Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 1/2 cup well drained roasted red bell peppers (from a jar) 8 slices provolone cheese, halved 1/3 pound deli sliced hot salami 1/4 pound deli sliced ham 1/4 pound deli sliced capocollo 1/2 cup well drained hot pepper rings (from a jar) Heat oven to 375°. Unroll both cans of dough; separate into 8 rectangles. On ungreased 12-inch pizza pan, arrange rectangles in ring so short sides of rectangles form a circle in center. (Dough will overlap; half of each rectangle will hang over edge of pan. Dough ring should look like a sun.)

Spread roasted red bell peppers toward center of ring on bottom halves of rectangles. Top with half of the cheese. Layer salami, ham and capocollo slices over cheese. Arrange pepper rings over top.

Cover with remaining half of cheese.

Bring each dough rectangle hanging over side of pan up over stacked filling, tucking dough under bottom layer of dough to secure it. Repeat around sandwich until entire filling is enclosed (some filling might show a little). Sprinkle with black pepper.

Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until dough is golden brown and thoroughly baked.

Cool 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into serving slices.

Taco Crescent Ring 1 pound ground beef 1 1-ounce package taco seasoning mix 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 8-ounce cans Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls Shredded lettuce Chopped tomatoes Sliced ripe olives Taco sauce or salsa Heat oven to 375°. In 10-inch non-stick skillet, cook beef until no longer pink. Add taco seasoning mix and 1/2 cup water.

Simmer 3 to 4 minutes or until slightly thickened. In medium bowl, mix beef mixture and cheese.

Unroll both cans of dough; separate into 8 triangles. On ungreased large cookie sheet, arrange triangles in ring so short sides of triangles form a 5-inch circle in center. (Dough will overlap; half of each triangle will hang over edges of cookie sheet. Dough ring should look like a sun.)

Spoon beef mixture on the half of each triangle closest to center of ring. Bring each dough triangle hanging over side of pan up over filling, tucking dough under bottom layer of dough to secure it. Repeat around ring until entire filling is enclosed (some filling might show a little).

Gently separate dough perforations on top until filling peeks through. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until dough is golden brown and thoroughly baked. Cool 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into serving slices.

Serve with taco toppings.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Ring 2 8-ouunce packages cream cheese, softened 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 2 cups shredded cooked chicken 1/2 cup chopped cooked bacon (about 6 slices) 1/2 cup chopped cooked ham 3/4 cup shredded Swiss cheese (12 ounces) 2 8-ounce cans Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls Heat oven to 375°. Lightly spray 18-by-13-inch cookie sheet with cooking spray. In large bowl, stir together cream cheese, garlic salt and onion powder until evenly combined. Add chicken, bacon, ham and Swiss cheese; stir to combine, making sure to evenly coat all ingredients in cream cheese mixture. Set aside.

Using one can of crescent dough, separate dough into 4 rectangles (2 crescents per section); place on cookie sheet in circular shape resembling a compass, one rectangle pointing north, one pointing east, one pointing south and the last one pointing west.

Using second can of dough, separate dough into 4 rectangles. Filling gaps of first layer, arrange rectangles in similar circular shape, only this time having one pointing northeast, one pointing southeast, one pointing southwest and the last one pointing northwest.

Evenly spoon cream cheese mixture over dough; mold mixture into shape of

ring on center of dough circle, making sure to leave about 1/2-inch gap of dough in center of ring.

Fold outer edges of dough ring over filling to dough without filling in center of ring. Press dough edges to seal completely so filling does not leak out during baking.

Seal all gaps, openings and edges to completely cover filling with dough and make a smooth and uniform appearance.

Bake 20 minutes or until top is golden brown. Cool 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into servings. Serve warm.

Ham and Eggs Crescent Ring 2 cups cubed ham steak, cut into 1/2inch pieces (about 3/4 pound) 1/3 cup chopped onion 8 eggs, slightly beaten 3 ounces softened cream cheese, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 cups lightly packed spinach leaves, stems removed, cut into 1/4-inch strips 1 cup shredded Colby-Monterrey Jack cheese 2 8-ounce cans Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls Heat oven to 375°. In 12-inch non-stick skillet, cook ham and onion over medium-high heat 3 to 5 minutes or until onions soften and turn translucent. Add eggs to skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally from outside edge to center. Cook until eggs are set but still moist; turn off heat. Add cream cheese, spinach and shredded cheese; gently mix until just combined.

Unroll both cans of dough; separate into 8 rectangles. On ungreased large cookie sheet, arrange rectangles in ring so short sides of rectangles form a 5-inch circle in center. (Dough will overlap; half of each rectangle will hang over edges of cookie sheet. Dough ring should look like a sun.)

Bacon Cheeseburger Crescent Ring 1 pound ground beef, cooked and drained 1/3 cup ranch dressing 4 slices cooked bacon, chopped 2 8-ounce cans Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 16 dill pickle slices (chips) 4 slices American cheese, cut in half 2 teaspoons sesame seed Heat oven to 375°. In small bowl, mix cooked beef, ranch dressing and bacon.

Unroll both cans of dough; separate into 8 rectangles. On ungreased large cookie sheet, arrange rectangles in ring so short sides of rectangles form a 5-inch circle in center. (Dough will overlap; half of each rectangle will hang over edges of cookie sheet. Dough ring should look like a sun.)

Spoon beef mixture on the half of each rectangle closest to center of ring; top each with 2 pickle slices and 1 piece of cheese.

Bring each dough rectangle hanging over side of pan up over filling, tucking dough under bottom layer of dough to secure it. Repeat around ring until entire filling is enclosed (some filling might show a little).

Gently separate dough perforations on top until filling peeks through. Brush dough lightly with water; sprinkle with sesame seed. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until dough is golden brown and thoroughly baked. Cool 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into serving slices.

Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development announces Brock Bassett is 2016 Ambassador On June 20, 2012, the Kurtz/ Bassett family was blessed with its newest family member, Brock Easton Bassett. Brock was a happy, healthy baby boy delivered via a scheduled C-section.

“Brock was a great baby with no concerns other than a diagnosis of rotavirus at 9 months old,” said Jen Kurtz, Brock’s mom. “Brock recovered quickly from this and began walking and doing his best to keep up with his brother and sister shortly after.”

As the months went on, Brock became very needy. He would point to something he wanted and try to say it in his own vocabulary. If you didn’t understand him, he would get very frustrated and would start throwing fits.

Jen did her best to keep Brock happy, not even realizing or thinking something wasn’t right.

In March of 2014, Jen took her 3-year-old Lane to get screened for preschool at Lincoln School in Oglesby. The office and preschool staff knew the family well as big sister, Kendal, attended preschool there. While at the screening, Brock, who was 19 months old, started throwing a fit as Jen tried to fill out some paperwork. The preschool coordinator, Sue, suggested that Brock could be screened that day as well. Jen was surprised as she didn’t realize that at 19 months old Brock could be screened.

The screening determined that Brock had a speech delay and needed early intervention ser-

vices including developmental and speech therapy.

“I had no idea what these services were and how it could help my son’s tantrums. I wondered if I was a bad mom for not realizing he needed help sooner,” said Jen. Like many parents, Jen had no idea that there was an organization here in the area that could help with something like this or that her son needed help.

Ms. Kelly was Brock’s developmental therapist; she worked with him twice a week. Ms. Maria, his speech therapist, would see him once a week. Brock also attended Ms. Kelly’s 2-year-old toddler class that she taught two days a week. Jen was very thankful for all the help Brock was getting and hoped that because of this, Brock would be caught up by the time he entered preschool.

“Jen is an amazing mom and worked with us closely. She helped reinforce all that he was learning,” said Kelly Bault, Brock’s developmental therapist. “Jen’s involvement and hard work made a huge difference in his progress.”

When Brock’s therapy sessions began in June of 2014, Brock’s progression was initially very slow going. Around September of 2014, Brock started going to Ms. Kelly’s toddler class, and he loved attending his “school.” His speech came slow, but it was increasing. He only had a few tantrums at school, but Ms. Kelly

was able to stop them fast. As his speech was increasing, his tantrums overall were lessening. In April of 2015, Brock was accepted into the public school preschool program, but Ms. Kelly was able to keep him in her toddler class after he turned 3 since he had a summer birthday. This allowed him to continue therapies until school started.

Today Brock loves school and playing with his friends. His speech has improved greatly, and he loves to show his family what he did in class and share his stories from school.

“Brock’s teacher recently told me that if they were to evaluate him for preschool now, he would not qualify because he would no longer be considered developmentally delayed,” said Jen. The Kurtz/Bassett family is so thankful to Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development (SRRC) and everyone involved with Brock’s progress. He has excelled so much and is a happier preschooler because of it.

“Brock is an example of what a difference early intervention can make,” said Paula Williamson, director of therapy at SRRC. “Children in early intervention have greater than expected growth, in that they acquire skills at a faster rate even after they leave the program. Nearly half of children leave EI functioning at age level, and do not need special education at kindergarten age.”

Sports: Cross country, basketball, track.

Favorite sport and why: Cross country. I like to run, I love my teammates, the views in cross country are so pretty in the fall, and coach Hodge is a great coach.

Favorite food and where to get it: Lemon chicken, crab rangoon, fried rice and wonton soup from Oriental Garden.

Likes: Bacon, orange juice, biscuits and gravy, the color red, hair spray, music, Billy Joel, sleep.

Hall hitting clinic SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devils will hold a hitting clinic for both baseball and softball players with former pro player and internationally-known hitting instructor, Mark Doran.

The baseball portion of the clinic will be Sunday, Jan. 17, and the softball portion will be Sunday, Jan. 24. For more information, check the Hall High School athletic website and click on the clinic tab.

Bruins spring training PERU — The St. Bede Bruins baseball team will hold its Spring Training Baseball Clinic in March. Session 1 for ages 6-8 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 5. Session II for ages 9-11 will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 6. Session III for ages 12-14 will be from 8:30 am. to noon, Saturday, March 12.

Instructors for the clinic will be St. Bede coaches and players, headed by varsity coach Bill Booker. Participants will learn baseball fundamentals for the upcoming season. Sessions will focus on hitting, field, throwing, bunting, pitch and catching skills.

Princeton Shootout

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 23rd annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 27-28 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grade 7-8 brackets Feb. 27 and in the Grade 5-6 brackets Feb. 28. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout both days. In addition, a 3-point shot and Hot Shot competition will also be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day. Tournament T-shirts can be purchased at all admission gates. Entry deadline is Feb. 1.

Rifle Club

CHILLICOTHE — The Marshall-Putnam 4-H Shooting Sports is now accepting enrollment for .22 rifle club. The club, which is open to all youth ages 10-18, will meet at the indoor range at the Chillicothe Sportsmen’s Club on Route 29. The cost is $15 with your own .22 rifle, or $20 if you use a provided .22 rifle. The club will meet Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 14. Archery will be postponed until March 2016. The facility set up for archery closed its doors.
