Eagle watching It’s that time of year, when our national bird heads to the Midwest to find fresh fish in our waters. You can find this majestic bird literally in your own backyard; many have sighted them along the Hennepin Canal, the Illinois River and its backwaters, the Rock River, and of course, the mighty Mississippi River.

Winter, of course, is the best time to spot bald eagles in this area. Thousands of eagles begin arriving in Iowa/Illinois in September, and the highest concentration of eagles in the Central U.S. is along the Mississippi River, according to officials from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The eagles winter along the open water, especially at locks and dams and power plants where water doesn’t completely freeze over, so they can hunt for fish.

“Bald eagles generally roost together in large mature trees surrounded by a buffer of smaller trees,” according to the DNR website.

“Roosts are chosen by the eagles to provide protection from the weather and avoid disturbances.”

During daytime hours, eagles usually roost within 60 yards of the water’s edge. More than 70 percent of their feeding happens in the early-morning hours.

The DNR recommends avoiding disturbing eagles by staying at least 400 yards away from a perched eagle.

“If possible, stay in your vehicle, use a blind, or stand behind stationary objects when viewing eagles,” the DNR post said.

Bald Eagle Days is the largest event in the Midwest dedicated to the United States’ national symbol of freedom.

Thousands turn out for the annual event which includes: Live eagle programs, Pella Wildlife Company Wolves, rock-climbing wall, exhibits and activities.

Bob Motz has been hosting bald eagle safaris for more than 20 years and has welcomed people from across the globe. During the Eagle Safaris, high-powered spotting scopes, connected to the car window, provide excellent viewing. The spotting scopes are powerful enough to see the gold of the eagle’s eye, the nostrils in its beak, and the black talons extending from its toes.

The tours are two to three hours in length and run a flat rate of $20 per hour whether its one or four people. You can reserve a safari for family, friends with a maximum of four people. Larger groups come each winter in buses, for which the charge is $40 per hour. And, yes, he does guarantee eagle sightings or your money back! In 2007, the bald eagle, America’s national symbol, flew off the Endangered Species Act’s “threatened” list. In the winter, the bald eagles flock to the Quad Cities from mid-December through mid-February. Why do eagles like the Quad Cities? The bald eagles migrate south along the Mississippi River each winter as waters freeze in the northern U.S. and Canada. Eagles feed mainly on fish and need open waters to feed. Waters below locks and dams do not completely freeze over in the winter and allow eagles prime feeding opportunities. Plus the Quad Cities has many wooded river bluffs that allow eagles a prime habitat for perching and evening roosts.

Eagles: Up close and personal The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. These regal birds aren’t really bald, but their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolate-brown body and wings. Look for them soaring in solitude, chasing other birds for their food, or gathering by the hundreds in winter. Once endangered by hunting and pesticides, bald eagles have flourished under protection.

Size and shape The Bald Eagle dwarfs most other raptors, including the turkey vulture and red-tailed hawk. It has a heavy body, large head and long, hooked bill. In flight, a bald eagle holds its broad wings flat like a board.

Color pattern Adult bald eagles have white heads and tails with dark brown bodies and wings. Their legs and bills are bright yellow. Immature birds have mostly dark heads and tails; their brown wings and bodies are mottled with white in varying amounts. Young birds attain adult plumage in about five years.

Behavior You’ll find bald eagles soaring high in the sky, flapping low over treetops with slow wingbeats, or perched in trees or on the ground. Bald eagles scavenge many meals by harassing other birds or by eating carrion or garbage. They eat mainly fish, but also hunt mammals, gulls and waterfowl.

Habitat Look for Bald Eagles near lakes, reservoirs, rivers, marshes and coasts. For a chance to see large bald eagle congregations, check out wildlife refuges or large bodies of water in winter over much of the continent.

Bring your binoculars By the Mississippi River, there are great eagle spotting places where you can see up to 10 eagles in a tree! The waters of the river remain unfrozen near the locks and dams; fish are plentiful; and trees on the riverbanks provide prime sites for perching and roosting.

You don’t need a reservation. Just be sure to not disturb the eagles by getting too close. They need to conserve their energy in the cold weather.

#GivingTuesday gives $65,000 to St. Bede’s Annual Fund #BruinPride Challenge surpassed with matching gifts of $31,500 PERU — St. Bede Academy joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

Dec. 1 marked the third annual #GivingTuesday, a primarily social-media-powered day of philanthropy following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The #GivingTuesday movement was created in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y, the United Nations Foundation and the Case Foundation.

St. Bede set forth on a #BruinPridde Challenge for their annual fund to reach a goal of $12,500 in one day in honor of their 125th anniversary. With the support of four matching donors — D.J. Sickley Construction, Class of 1973, Angelo Perino, Class of 1980, both with matching gifts of $5,000 each, LaSalle State Bank with a match of $1,500 and an anonymous $1,000 donor — the challenge was met head on by reaching $12,500 by late morning. By noon, that challenge had grown to $27,500 with two new donors donating an additional match of $5,000 from David Porter, Class of 1961, and $10,000 from an anonymous supporter.

In one day, on #GivingTuesday, friends and family of St. Bede raised more than $34,000 and with matches of $31,500 brought the grand total to more than $65,000 in support of the St. Bede Annual Fund.

Abbot Philip, O.S.B., commented, “One of the great joys in my life is to watch our students come alive as they

grow in knowledge, wisdom and faith.

The great outpouring of financial support on #GivingTuesday is just the latest example of how much people value our work at St. Bede. On behalf of all of us at St. Bede, we say thank you and want you to know that every day at our midday prayer the monastic community prays for all those who help us continue our important ministries.”

On #GivingTuesday, the students, faculty and staff showed their Bruin pride as well and joined in the challenge with their own personal donations. “It is impressive to see our students who haven’t even graduated yet support the annual fund, and to have nearly 100 percent participation by our faculty staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Ted Struck.

“The outpouring of generosity to St. Bede’s Annual Fund in just one day was amazing and most moving to witness,” said Julia Yaklich, development director for St. Bede.

“Our goal was to reach $12,500 to honor our 125 years of providing a Catholic education in the Benedictine tradition, and by the time the clock struck 12, our friends and family spoke loudly by honoring that tradition more than two fold.”

The St. Bede Annual Fund is a means of providing a steady stream of income to the school and yearly donated funds help with the day-to-day-costs of operating St. Bede to meet its annual budget. Gifts to the Annual Fund are vital to keep tuition affordable by bridging the gap of more than 50 percent.

Art exhibition to feature Sheridan, Ngo ROCK ISLAND — An exhibit running through Feb. 5 at the Quad City Arts, 1715 Second Ave. in Rock Island will feature the works of Jessica Sheridan of Davenport, Iowa, and Tri Ngo of Glendale Heights.

Jessica Sheridan presents her photographic series documenting scars.

Sheridan explores relationships, battles and the

life-saving surgeries that have made marks on her subjects. She decided to do this project to help others stand proud of where their bodies have been and to show others that they will heal too.

“Some scars create road maps so complicated; you can barely recognize the landscape that was once there,” she said.

Tri Ngo presents an

exploration of identity in “home” a series of images drawn with fingerprints as a mark-making gesture.

Ngo was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States as a child.

Thus, he understands identity as malleable and the concept of home as definitive of that identity. This series focuses on his parents’ pursuit of the American Dream.

28th annual IVCH Foundation Ball on Jan. 16

Princeton Public Library will offer Little Free Library kits PRINCETON — Beginning in January, the Princeton Public Library will offer groups, businesses and individuals who would like to participate in the Little Free Library initiative a chance to put together a Little Free Library from an existing kit.

The library has purchased five essential kits that can be used for building. Materials will need to be purchased separately, since these kits do not come with instructions, trim, Plexiglas or other finishing materials. The Little Free Library website notes that basic carpentry experience is recommended for those wishing to con-

struct their kit.

This is a perfect opportunity for any local group to take part in and be represented in this community-wide program. Once built, libraries can be given back to the Princeton Public Library for final design work or can be completed by and donated back to be displayed in the spring. Make sure you, your group, or your business contributes to this highly-visible endeavor.

LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Community Hospital Foundation’s 28th annual benefit ball is set for Saturday, Jan. 16, at Celebrations 150 in LaSalle.

RVP announces audition dates for ‘Something’s Afoot’ With winter weather upon us, a good, hot steamy bowl of soup might just be the ticket to warm up your belly and your family, when the cold wind is blowing and the snow is falling outside. Enjoy some of these hearty, hot meals with some bread/ rolls and salad, and you’ll have yourself a great meal.

Brats and Beer Cheddar Chowder 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 medium onion, finely chopped (1/2 cup) 1 medium carrot, coarsely shredded (1/2 cup) 3 large shallots, chopped 1 14-ounce can vegetable broth or 1 3/4 cups vegetable stock 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup whole milk, half-and-half or light cream 1 teaspoon caraway seeds, crushed 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 10 ounces aged cheddar cheese or sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 4 cooked smoked bratwurst, knockwurst or Polish sausage (about 12 ounces total), halved lengthwise and sliced 1 12-ounce can beer or 12-ounce bottle ale In a large saucepan, heat the butter over medium heat. Add onion, carrot and shallots; reduce heat to medium low. Cook, stirring frequently, about 10 to 15 minutes or until the onion is very soft and golden.

In a large screw-top jar, combine broth and flour. Cover and shake until combined and smooth. Stir into the onion mixture. Add the milk, caraway seeds and black pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, about 5 minutes or until the mixture thickens. Gradually stir in the cheese; reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring frequently, until cheese melts, but do not boil. Stir in the bratwurst and beer.

Cook, stirring frequently, until heated through. If you like, serve with rye bread.

Souper Spaghetti 1 pound lean ground beef 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 small green sweet pepper, chopped 1/2 cup chopped celery (1 stalk) 1 medium carrot, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 1/2 cups water 2 14 1/2-ounce cans diced tomatoes 1 13- to 15-ounce jar spaghetti sauce 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning, crushed 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Dash or two of crushed red pepper 2 ounces spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces In large saucepan or Dutch oven, cook meat, onion, sweet pepper, celery, carrot and garlic over medium heat until vegetables are tender and meat is no longer pink.

Drain off excess fat. Add water, undrained tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, sugar and seasonings. Bring mixture to boiling. Add broken spaghetti. Return to boiling.

Reduce heat and boil gently, uncovered, for 12 to 15 minutes or until spaghetti is tender. Serve immediately.

Miner’s Beef Stew 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 1/2 pounds boneless beef chuck steak, cut into 1-inch pieces 3/4 cup chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 3 tablespoons flour 1 14-ounce can beef broth 1/4 cup canned tomato puree 1 bay leaf 1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped carrot 1 cup coarsely chopped celery 1 cup coarsely chopped red sweet pepper 1 cup frozen pearl onions 1/2 cup frozen peas

1 1/2 teaspoons bottled hot pepper sauce 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Bread soup bowls (optional) In a 4-quart Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Cook meat, half at a time, in hot oil until brown. Return all meat to Dutch oven. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook until onion is tender, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle flour over meat mixture. Cook and stir until flour is lightly brown. Stir in broth, tomato puree and bay leaf. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until meat is tender. Remove and discard bay leaf.

In a large saucepan, cook carrot, celery, sweet pepper and pearl onions, covered, in a small amount of boiling salted water for 15 minutes or until tender. Drain.

Stir drained vegetables, frozen peas, hot pepper sauce, thyme and black pepper into meat mixture; heat through. Season to taste.

If you like, serve stew in a bread bowl (hollow out before filling), or serve in shallow bowls.

Midwest Ham Chowder 2 cups water 2 cups chopped potatoes 1/2 cup chopped carrots 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/4 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup butter or margarine 1/4 cup flour 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 cups milk 2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or 10 ounces American cheese, torn 1 15-ounce can cream-style corn 2 cups cubed cooked ham In a large saucepan or pot, combine water, potatoes, carrots, celery and onion.

Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

For cheese sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt butter or margarine. Stir in flour and pepper. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly.

Add cheese to sauce and cook and stir until melted. Add cheese sauce to vegetable mixture. Stir in corn and ham. Heat through, but don’t boil. Ladle into soup bowls and top with additional pepper, if you like.

Corn and Sausage Chowder 1 pound bulk pork sausage 1 cup coarsely chopped onion 4 cups peeled potatoes cut in 1/2-inch cubes 2 cups water 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram, crushed 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper 1 17-ounce can cream-style corn 1 17-ounce can whole-kernel corn, drained 1 12- ounce can evaporated milk In a Dutch oven or kettle, cook the pork sausage and onion until the sausage is brown and the onion is tender. Drain mixture on paper towels.

Return sausage mixture to Dutch oven.

Stir in potatoes, water, salt, marjoram and pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat.

Simmer, uncovered, about 15 minutes or until potato is just tender.

Add the cream-style corn, whole-kernel corn and the evaporated milk. Heat through.

Five performances planned starting on April 16 HENRY — River Valley Players auditions for the musical comedy “Somethings Afoot” will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at St. John’s Community Center, 1301 Second St. in Henry.

In this spoof of classic Agatha Christie detective stories, 10 unfortunate souls are invited for “a marvelous weekend in the country air” at a secluded English estate, but find quite a different scenario when they’re stranded during a thunderstorm.

When someone is found murdered, it’s a frantic race against the clock for the guests to escape the strange happening within the mansion. As tensions rise, each guest becomes a suspect. Who will eventually be identified as the devious culprit to the mayhem that lurks in every room? Set in 1935 with a rousing vaudeville-style score, this suspenseful satire is a smashing good time – and far funnier than foul play

should be. Audiences just might die laughing.

Roles are available for six men and four women (one of the male roles, Dr. Grayburn, may be cast with a female): • Lettie: The saucy maid.

• Flint: The caretaker.

• Clive: The fussy butler.

Baritone.

• Hope Langdon: The ingénue. Soprano.

• Dr. Grayburn: The family doctor. Tenor.

• Nigel Rancour: The disreputable black-sheep nephew. Tenor.

• Lady Grace Manley-Prowe: The grande dame. Mezzo Soprano.

• Colonel Gillweather: The old Army man. Bass.

• Miss Tweed: The tweedy, elderly amateur detective. Mezzo Soprano.

• Geoffrey: The young uninvited guest. Tenor.

Also needed are five to six stage hands to create the magic involving the intricate set and special effects needed for the show. Although the cast is limited to the characters listed, there is opportunity to be involved with making the show come to life.

It is only necessary to attend one of the auditions. Newcomers and

theatre veterans alike are welcome and encouraged to audition. Prepare 16 to 32 bars of a musical theatre song that best shows your range. Bring sheet music in your key, as an accompanist will be provided. If you do not have sheet music, a selection of music books of familiar songs will be available for you to use. Be prepared to read from the script and demonstrate simple stage movement. The characters have accents ranging from cockney to upper class British accents. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes that allow freedom of movement.

Rehearsals will be held at St. John’s Community Theatre and will usually be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring to auditions a list of potential conflicts with scheduled rehearsals. There will be five performances — April 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24.

Hall hitting clinic SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devils will hold a hitting clinic for both baseball and softball players with former pro player and internationally-known hitting instructor, Mark Doran.

Princeton Shootout

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Athletic Boosters will be hosting the 23rd annual Princeton Boys Shootout Feb. 27-28 at Princeton High School and Logan Junior High School.

Thirty-two teams from Bureau County, Quad Cities, Rockford, western suburbs and the Peoria areas will be represented. Teams will compete in the Grade 7-8 brackets Feb. 27 and in the Grade 5-6 brackets Feb. 28. Tournament games will be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout both days. In addition, a 3-point shot and Hot Shot competition will also be held.

The public is encouraged to attend the tournament with one gate fee for all locations each day. Tournament T-shirts can be purchased at all admission

gates. Entry deadline is Feb. 1.

Rifle Club

CHILLICOTHE — The Marshall-Putnam 4-H Shooting Sports is now accepting enrollment for .22 rifle club. The deadline to sign up for .22 rifle is Jan. 6. The club, which is open to all youth ages 10-18, will meet at the indoor range at the Chillicothe Sportsmen’s Club on Route 29. The cost is $15 with your own .22 rifle, or $20 if you use a provided .22 rifle.
