Winter sports — a chilly adventure

While warmer weather speaks to walkers, runners and those looking to play a game of baseball, soccer or other outdoor games, the blustery winter weather still offers fitness enthusiasts an opportunity to test their endurance, in spite of colder temperatures.

Here, a climber can be seen traversing the frozen waterfalls at Starved Rock State Park, outside of Utica. The park also offers a variety of other sporting venues, perfect those who don’t mind the colder weather.

Echo Bluff, located between DePue and Spring Valley in Hall Township, also offers outdoor enthusiasts a host of fun activities like ice skating, hockey and family skate events. The park also has more than 7,000 yards of trails, two fire pits perfect for a good marshmallow roast, a newly-restored picnic area and more.

In Princeton, there are plenty of opportunities for cross country skiing, once the snow hits the ground, and the Bureau County Metro Center and other fitness venues welcome everyone with open arms, if the weather outside gets too cold to handle.

And if you love your fishing rod and reel, the county has quite a few places where fishermen/women anxiously wait for the ice to get thick enough to hopefully catch a fish or two from the depths of area waterways.

Many other smaller towns offer events or opportunities, geared for those who love the outdoors — regardless of the season — not only to stay physically fit, but to also get some fresh, crisp air during the Midwest’s winter.

Change for Change Fourth-graders give to help South African students

PRINCETON — It’s a typical holiday event in most classrooms across the country. Children either bring a small present for a gift exchange, or they each draw a name of a classmate, buy a small gift, wrap it up and bring it to school to exchange during their Christmas party.

It’s been going on for years.

While teachers and schools are changing up the classic Christmas present or grab bag exchange, one teacher and her students have decided to take a more global approach to their generosity.

Julie Eisenbarth, a fourth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Princeton, is teaching her students to be “KIND” — an acronym for Kids in Need of Desks.

Eisenbarth was watching MSNBC, and she saw a segment that caught her attention. She said a reporter for MSNBC, Lawrence O’Donnell, was on assignment in Malawi, South Africa, and found a need for student desks in their schools.

“He started KIND as a way to help these students,” Eisenbarth said. “For every $65 raised, a double desk and two chairs can be purchased for the students in Malawi.

There are also options to provide students’ tuition for $130 a year.” Eisenbarth did some research on the charity and found it to be affiliated with UNICEF. “In Malawi, South Africa, it is a struggle to feed, much less educate, their children,” Eisenbarth said. “One of the challenges is that the students have no desks, leaving them to sit on hard, dirt floors all day. Of course, this makes it difficult to write or concentrate after sitting uncomfortably for hours at a time.”

After speaking with her students, the class decided it was a worthy cause ... worthy enough to forgo a Christmas present for themselves in their classroom and focus on helping children who weren’t as fortunate as they are. Thus, the class created “Change for Change” — an opportunity for each student to bring in some spare change and donate it to the KIND project.

Change for Change has become a cross-curriculum project, using social studies, math and English skills as they work to help children they’ll probably never know.

Along with their teacher and their classroom aide, Sherrie Sims, the 9 and 10 year olds divide into groups each morning and count their money, writing and solving the addition on the board, adding the results to the previous day and charting it

on their goal poster.

“Our goal was originally $65, but we surpassed that on the second day of collecting change,” Eisenbarth said.

But the math, English and social studies lessons are only part of what Eisenbarth hopes her young students will take away from Change for Change.

“We have talked about how lucky we are, and how we take things for granted,” she said. “We also talked about how the people of Malawi are experiencing a drought and struggle with lack of food, since they are predominately a farming community.

“My hope is that the students all earn

a sense of pride and accomplishment from helping others,” Eisenbarth added.

“I want them to be life-long givers. Our world needs more of that.”

The students made their way to Midland States Bank on Wednesday, Dec. 21, with baskets and bags of change in tow. With the help of Sue Spratt, Midland banking center manager, and Courtney Wright, Midland universal bank employee, they watched as the machine counted their change.

The total? A whooping $650.63. The Princeton children’s squeals of delight might have been heard all the way to Malawi, South Africa.

Illinois Ag in the Classroom names 2016 Volunteers of the Year CHICAGO — The Glenn and Todd Wright families of Bureau County, Janet Noe of Woodford County and Bryan Roosevelt of Edwards County were presented the 2016 Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom (IAITC) Volunteer of the Year award.

The award was presented during the Illinois Farm Bureau’s annual meeting in Chicago, Dec. 3-6.

The Glenn and Todd Wright families have hosted 130 second- and third-graders from the Princeton Elementary School District annually for the last 10 years.

room presenters for local Agriculture in the Classroom efforts; assist with Princeton FFA Alumni and FFA chapter activities; and are involved in other agriculture and conservation efforts in the county.

Noe, an active member of the Woodford County Women’s Committee and Agriculture in the Classroom Committee, spends her time volunteering with the county’s Agriculture in the Classroom program to reach 170 third- and fourth-graders annually. With every family member involved in both agriculture and agriculture advocacy efforts, they help teach grade-schoolers more about agriculture and farming in Illinois first hand as they explained planting and harvesting in Illinois.

They also are involved with the Bureau County Ag Fair, helping to educate more than 400 fourthgrade students a year, as well as the Fifth Grade Conservation Day hosted by NRCS and Soil and Water, which reaches 250 students annually. The Wrights also serve as class-

pal with a Chicago-area classroom.

Well-known for her innovative “Happy Meal” lesson where she shows students how every part of their lunch comes from agriculture, Noe weaves lessons in math, science and geography into her teaching. Additionally, Noe is the driving force with the Woodford County Driver’s Education Safety program, showing new drivers just how big farm equipment is, and how important it is to share the road in rural areas.

Roosevelt, a former Edwards County Farm

Bureau president, was instrumental in starting the Agriculture in the Classroom program in Edwards County. Roosevelt serves as a thirdgrade classroom presenter, allowing FFA students to shadow and work with him; presenter and farm host during Summer Ag Institutes for area teachers; presenter at the Consumer Agriculture Institute; and presenter for Family and Consumer Science classes.

Roosevelt also serves as a key participant in the Adopt-A-Classroom program with two Chi-

cago-area teachers and the Edwards County Adopt-A-Legislator program. He is most passionate about working to provide students with an understanding of animal agriculture.

The Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom Volunteer of the Year award recognizes county volunteers who have done an outstanding job with Agriculture in the Classroom and agriculture literacy efforts. Since 1983, 85 individuals have been recognized for contributions to agriculture literacy.

Farm Bureau recognized at Illinois annual meeting Award for Group IV for earning points in 13 program and committee areas and attaining the membership quota set by Illinois Farm Bureau.

County Farm Bureaus in Group IV are those with 2,956-5,515 total members. Bureau County has 3,622 total members, 1,259 being farmer members.

As part of its annual meeting, Illinois Farm Bureau presents program and committee awards in recognition of outstanding county Farm Bureau volunteer efforts throughout the year.

The Illinois Farm Bureau is a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, a national organization of farmers and ranchers. Founded in 1916, IFB is a non-profit, membership organization controlled by farmers who join through their county Farm Bureau. IFB represents two out of three Illinois farmers.

Connecting with other artists PRINCETON — A new and exciting art experience is taking place in Princeton, as Princeton Arts Academy welcomes Connections Art Center to its 230 E Backbone Road location in Princeton.

Liana Hall, founder of Princeton Arts Academy, said, “We are excited to have this group of artists joining us at the Academy.”

Fat 50 MCNABB — The “Fat 50” 50-kilometer run will be Saturday, Jan. 14, with a start

Donate to Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger: Hunters are encouraged to donate whole deer to the Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger program to help Illinois families in need. Participating meat processors turn the donated deer into ground venison for delivery to food banks and charities in Illinois.
