Maggie Lorenc, a representative of AFSCME Council 31, said the union was opposed to the consolidation, citing concerns about resident safety and staffing at WESCOM, “as one center will be handling calls from 20 agencies.” In May, the union circulated a petition against the consolidation.

Lorenc said any employees who opt not to pursue employment with WESCOM will be eligible for unemployment. “WESCOM is a separate employer, and the village of Bolingbrook cannot force them to take employment there,” she said. “So technically they are eliminating positions and this is a reduction of force.” WESCOM, formed in 1992 with seven initial agencies, will have a membership of 21 agencies with the addition of Bolingbrook’s fire and police dispatch services. “It was the brainchild of some [fire] chiefs who are now retired, and they came up with

visors will be offered jobs at WESCOM, according to Steve Rauter, executive director of WESCOM. “We’ve outstretched our hand to take as many of them as Bolingbrook can provide,” Rauter said. “We haven’t heard from all of them yet, but several have applied and they seem pretty excited to be coming here.” Any Bolingbrook employees hired on at WESCOM would bring accruals with them, Rauter said, including longevity level for salary purposes, years toward pension and some comp time. “In some cases they will make more [in compensation], some will make less, but on

the idea after the deadly tornado hit Plainfield in the early ’90s,” Rauter said. “They wanted to do something more cost-effective with dispatch that followed the technology of the day.” In July, WESCOM opened a 17,000-square-foot facility in Plainfield. Rauter called it a state-of-the-art facility that provides a protected environment with advanced technology for dispatchers. “Our ability to stay in service is pretty good. We have two generators, two HVAC systems. And the place is built to withstand tornadoes,” Rauter said. Another advantage, Rauter said, is the mutual aid services WESCOM provides for escalated police or fire incidents. And in the fall, WESCOM is expected to become the first Will County dispatch center to offer a “text to 911” service, he added. Ross said the prospects of offering a text to 911 service in the community was one of the reasons Bolingbrook’s departments wanted to make the switch. “It’s an expensive and complex technology,” he said. “It’s especially important for the hearing impaired in the community.” While both entities have targeted a date of Nov. 1 for the consolidation, Rauter said that date depends on a number of factors, including staffing needs.

BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook’s police and fire dispatch services will be outsourced this fall. The Bolingbrook Village Board voted Aug. 26 to approve an intergovernmental agreement with the Western Will County Communication Center to take over the services, a move officials said will net the village a savings of $319,000 annually. WESCOM, considered a unit of local government, is a consolidated dispatch service with 19 member agencies across three counties, primarily Will County. In addition to the savings, WESCOM offers better technology and a larger staff in the event of critical incidents, officials said. The move also follows the State of Illinois’ pro-consolidation stance, according to Bolingbrook Deputy Police Chief Tom Ross. “The state has said funding is becoming scarce and that they prefer that dispatch centers throughout the state start consolidating to save funds,” Ross said. The agreement calls for the village of Bolingbrook to pay WESCOM $1.13 million for its first year of membership. That figure is based on a projected number of calls the police and fire departments receive annually. The following years’ fees will be based on call volume as well. “We anticipate the savings will grow as well, as WESCOM adds more agencies and the costs are spread out even more,” Ross added. bstanley@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The pastor of a church where a volunteer treasurer stole more than $100,000 is satisfied with the sentence issued Monday. The Rev. Suzanne Anderson-Hurdle said Good Shepherd Lutheran Church “looks forward to moving on” since Deborah Suchomel was sentenced to four years probation and 480 hours of community service after pleading guilty to theft. Suchomel also brought a check to court for nearly $27,000 – the final amount agreed upon by her attorney and prosecutors, Anderson-Hurdle said. “She had already made other payments totaling

$56,000 that had been [intermittently] taken and put back, but that did not include any interest or tax penalties,” the pastor said. Investigators earlier estimated Suchomel, 52, obtained $106,000 between October 2005 and April 2013 while serving as bookkeeper and church council secretary. Suchomel would write checks to herself for cash and the embezzlement wasn’t discovered until last year after the IRS contacted the church about unpaid taxes. “This was a betrayal against all of us in the church and against me by a close friend,” Anderson-Hurdle said. “I’m very glad we’ll no longer have this taking up so much of the time we should spend on other things.”

Erick M. Maya, 24, of Cicero has been charged with the murder of Briana Valle, 15, after allegedly ambushing her and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, after they got into their car Feb. 13 in the 300 block of Emery Avenue in Romeoville. Briana, a Romeoville High School student who previously dated Maya, was shot in the head and died four days later. Guerrero was shot in the neck but survived. Police Cmdr. Brant Hromadka testified a perimeter was quickly set up around the neighborhood after the shooting and Maya was discovered about three hours later behind

Hromadka, who was the only witness to testify in the pretrial hearing, said another detective already was aware Maya had sent Briana “threatening text messages” two months earlier. Hromadka also said he spoke with Briana’s father, Alejandro Valle, whom believed Maya had attacked his daughter. The Valle family had an order of protection against Maya after he allegedly threatened to rape and kill the teenage girl. The detective assigned to

investigate the earlier threats brought Maya’s mugshots to the crime scene and distributed them to other officers, Hromadka said. After Maya came out from under the deck, he identified himself as “Carlos.” “I even held the two booking photos next to his head and he still denied [he was Erick],” Hromadka said. Maya’s lawyer George Lenard said police had not spoken to any eyewitnesses to the shooting and nearby residents who called police varied in their description of the suspect’s clothing. “What would a reasonably prudent police officer be expected to do? Not take him into custody?” Livas asked Lenard. “Looking at the history [between Briana and Valle] whether he was wearing a brown sweatshirt or black sweatshirt is almost immaterial.” Maya is scheduled to face a jury trial Monday.

Q: What happens in a periodontal exam? A: The goal of the periodontal exam is to assess the health of your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. As part of that assessment, your dentist will probe along the gum line to measure the depth of the pockets between the gum and the tooth. The dentist will use a narrow instrument called a periodontal probe, a rule of sorts, with lines marked in millimeters. Abnormally deep pockets are a sign of periodontal, or gum, disease. The dentist will also be observant about whatever bleeding occurs during the exam. Bleeding generally indicates inflammation. Swollen, red and bleeding gums may alert a person to a gum problem, but clinical measurements throughout the mouth are necessary to determine if true periodontal pocketing has developed. The periodontal exam also includes observation and documentation of the color and texture of gum tissue, the extent of gum recession, evidence of any tooth grinding and a measurement of tooth mobility. Your dentist will record all these observations not only to determine whether you have the beginnings of gum disease, but also to set a baseline of statistics and observations against which to compare future exams. The Will County Community Health Center in Joliet will receive $248,814, courtesy of a federal grant through the Affordable Care Act. The office of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, announced the grant in a news release on Aug. 26. It comes as a part of $1.7 million awarded to Chicago area community health centers to support construction and renovation projects. The Will County Health Department will use the money to make the community center’s waiting areas more accessible for patients with disabilities and to improve check-in and check-out efficiency, said Vic Reato, health department spokesman.

“We’re always looking to improve the patient experience,” Reato said. “I think it’s incumbent on us to make them have an experience that will be a pleasant one.” Health department officials plan to buy a wheelchair-accessible weight scale, reconfigure walls to provide more room i n the waiting area and lower the height of registration desks, he said. This money is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and made available through the Patient Centered Medical Home Facility Improvement Grant program. Four health centers in Chicago, one in La Grange and another in Oak Park, also will benefit from the award.

BOLINGBROOK – Visitation and services to celebrate the life of 8-year-old Tremann L. Ware Jr. took place Friday at Living Water Community Church in Bolingbrook. Tremann, a third-grader at Wood View Elementary School in Bolingbrook, died suddenly Aug. 26 from health complications, according to Valley View School District 365U. And distressed homes, meaning short sales and foreclosures, continue to make up a smaller share of the market. BOLINGBROOK – A Bolingbrook man who was one of three charged with mailing 5 pounds of marijuana to a home in Naperville in September 2013 was convicted Thursday in Judge Amy M. Bertani-Tomczak’s Will County Circuit Courtroom in Joliet. Nickolas J. Gelardi, 19, of the 1400 block of Lily Cache Lane, pleaded guilty to an amended felony charge of unlawful possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver, according to media reports. Tomczak accepted Gelardi’s plea and ordered him to perform 30 hours of community service, according to court records. Bertani-Tomczak also placed him on two years probation. Gelardi, along with Dani-

On July 2, our beloved young dog, Jessie, was hit on Woodridge Drive at Echo Park. It was an unfortunate accident but fatal. My husband had no vehicle, called me and before I arrived, a wonderful gentleman stopped and took them to the vet hospital. I was told he was employed at the nearby grade school. Later, he remained at the hospital until I arrived to be with him. Sadly, we did not get his name. I hope he knows how truly thankful we are. He made us realize there are people out there that really care and look out for others. With all the bad news we hear now from the media, there is sunshine. We will be forever grateful.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING The Village of Downers Grove will offer electronics recycling on Saturday, September 6, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The drop-off location is at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Avenue, in the employee parking lot at the rear of the building at the intersection of Curtiss Street and Mackie Place. BRANCH PICKUP PROGRAM The Village will begin its ﬁnal round of branch pick up for the 2014 Branch Pickup Program for single-family homes located within the Village of Lisle’s corporate limits. This program is free of charge.

The pick up areas and dates are as follows: • Homes located north of the Burlington Northern Train Tracks are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 8th. • Homes located between the Burlington Northern Train Tracks and Maple Avenue are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 15th. • Homes located south of Maple Avenue are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 22nd. Branch piles must be placed in the front parkway (not behind the resident’s property) by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled pickup week, but no earlier than the Friday before. We ask that homeowners adhere to the following guidelines when preparing their branch piles: • The Branch Pickup Program is intended for private residential branch trimming only and is not intended for whole trees or shrubs that have been removed. Material removed or trimmed by a contractor must be hauled away by the contractor. • For safer and easier handling, branches should be bundled with natural twine or rope – no nylon, plastic or metal. • Bundles are not to exceed 3 feet tall x 3 feet wide x 5 feet long and no more than 50 pounds. They should be lined out as close to the street as possible with cut ends facing the street. Single branches up to 8 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length should be placed separately from bundles. • Thorny material, vines, roots, stumps or landscape material (grasses, perennials, railroad ties, lumber) are not accepted. Once Village crews pass a residence during a scheduled week, they will not return. Material can be disposed of with the Waste Hauler in yard waste bags with yard waste stickers attached. Rauner notes in the fiscal blueprint that an ideal tax code “has low rates and a broad base.” Medical services and other professional services such as architects, barber shops, accountants and engineers would remain exempt from the sales tax. But services like travel agencies, graphic design, public relations and telemarketing would not. Services offered through small businesses like Kim Patterson’s Channahon-based Interior Ideas would be taxed under Rauner’s proposal. Patterson, who works out of her home, said she’s concerned the sales tax could make potential customers “think twice” about using her for design services. That would hurt the bottom line for someone like Patterson, whose business is entirely service-based. “I believe in paying my taxes and paying my fair share, but interior design is typically seen as a service people desire, but may not

need,” Patterson said. “I’m concerned people might not pursue the service anymore if they knew they had to pay tax on it.” Still, the Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability estimates an even broader tax base – barbershops and day care centers included – could generate about $4 billion annually for the state. Taxing attorney services alone would generate about $167 million annually for the state. In his plan, Rauner argues broadening the tax base would make Illinois more competitive. Russ Slinkard, president and CEO for the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry, disagreed. “The tax base continues to expand,” Slinkard said. “It’s taking more money from the customer and the business, and we’re seeing very little on the government’s end with improving efficiency, services and so forth.”

Time is near for LIHEAP applications SHAW MEDIA The Will County Center for Community Concerns has begun accepting some applications for winter energy assistance. The center is an administrator for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program which provides assistance on winter heating bills to income-eligible households. LIHEAP applications can now be submitted by households with a family member who is 60 or older or a member who is receiving Social Security disability payments. Starting Oct. 1, applications can be made by households with one of the following conditions: a heating system that does not work or has been redtagged by the utility company, disconnected service because of nonpayment or a child under the age of six. Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste

a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and

pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines

ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

jrossi@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Tuf Borland may be a junior in high school, but he is astute when it comes to the game of football. So after Borland and his highly touted Bolingbrook football teammates fell 2315 against Hinsdale Central in the season opener Friday night, he had some keen observations. “I think we blew a couple coverages,” Borland said. “Cover four, a guy got behind us, and man-to-man, we kind

of blew that, too. When you don’t do your job, it costs you.” The Raiders (0-1) came into the game regarded as one of the top teams in the state, but they were playing catch-up from the onset. They had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game. Their ensuing possession ended with a failed fourth down conversion after which Central (1-0) struck quickly for a 74-yard touchdown that put the hosts in a 14-0 hole. Bolingbrook battled back

to take a 15-14 lead at the half. Adam Klein connected with Neo Armstrong for a 41-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. Julian Huff ran in the two-point conversion. Those kinds of losses might mean a rebuilding year for most programs, but Benet is not like most programs. The squad enters the season with six players who saw plenty of action last year. Rachael Fara, last year’s kills leader, is back and is committed to play in college at Northwestern. Other players with college offers include Natalie Canulli (Penn State), Meghan Weber (Wright State) and Tiffany Clark (Michigan, second in digs last season), who plays libero in club but will switch to outside hitter for the Redwings. Sara Neilson, Maria Cyvas and Dana Griffin return after playing extensively last year. msleditorial@shawmedia.com LISLE – The game really began in the Sznajder family backyard years ago. Jack would throw a football to his older brother Brad. He’d catch it, and the game was on. One day, they hoped, they’d be doing it in a real stadium wearing real football jerseys. That is precisely what happened Friday in Benet’s season-opening 26-16 win against Downers Grove South at Benedictine University. Brad, a se-

nior, rushed for three touchdowns and 127 yards on the same night Jack, a sophomore, started his first varsity game. “It’s probably the coolest game of my life, I’d say, so far,” Brad said. “It was just awesome for me, for Jack, for my family to have this experience. That’s great.” Brad ran for touchdowns of six and seven yards in the first half as Benet grabbed an early 19-0 lead in the first half. He added a 34-yard score in the fourth quarter. Jack completed his first

five passes and ran for 32 yards on his first offensive play. He wound up completing 9-of-18 passes for 83 yards. “As a sophomore, he’s just going to get better and better,” Benet coach Pat New said of Jack. “I expected him to make a couple of mistakes because you’re a sophomore and that‘s what happens. He rose to the challenge. He’s a great competitor. I have total faith that he’ll just improve throughout the year.” The game was halted for more than an hour in the sec-

ond quarter because of lightning, and it was after the storm had passed that Downers Grove South came alive. Ryan Taylor scored on the Mustangs’ first possession of the second half, finishing off a 63-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. A 30-yard fumble return by Eric Denby for a score and a 36-yard field goal by Riley Heavey, all in the third quarter, closed Benet’s lead to 19-16. But even with two interceptions and a touchdown-saving tackle by Denby in the fourth

quarter, the Mustangs weren’t able to score again. Jacob Baker, a senior, made his debut at tailback and rushed for 71 yards. “Jacob ran hard,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “It was his first night at tailback. We saw some good things. We’d like to see him do a few more things, but that will come with some experience. We’re asking a kid who was a quarterback and a tight end last year to play tailback. We like him. We’re going to stick with him.”
