And all of them need vaccinations. “At first they were very shy, which says something because it’s rare to see 10-weekold puppies who do no want to be around people. But they’ve already started to open up and I know they will make good pets.” Weber echoed that last statement. She said the dogs are very much salvageable despite the rough and violent starts to their lives. “They’re still impres sionable,” Weber said. “They

BOLINGBROOK – Lauren Weber, a 29-year-old Bolingbrook resident, didn’t think twice when she ventured alone into the notorious Englewood neighborhood of Chicago on Feb. 11 to pluck a dozen pit bull puppies that otherwise would have been cast out into the streets, likely to their death. “My husband is definitely mad at me,” Weber said Wednesday. “But for me, I really love animals. ... I know Englewood is dangerous, but I had the opportunity to save those puppies.” Weber, a volunteer with several area pet rescues, got word about a week ago through fellow animal lovers that a Chicago man had 12 puppy pit bulls he was “looking to get rid of.” She was told the man tried selling them on Craigslist to no avail and was threatening to throw the dogs outside or use them as bait dogs in a dog fighting ring. Soon after, she made a quick decision to jump in her car, drive to the home and get the dogs out herself in what she said was her first true dog rescue. “I got there and the puppies were completely covered in fe-
can be trained and I can’t tell you how many dogs pulled from fighting rings have made good family pets. “You have to judge it on a dog by dog basis.” Weber said she’s been volunteering with animal welfare groups since 2004, including Humane Haven Animal Shelter in Bolingbrook. She is confident what the outcome would have been had she not suddenly driven out to Englewood. “I don’t think any of them would have made it,” Weber said. “They would have been tossed out. Tucker and Coco definitely wouldn’t have made it.” Paluch admitted she advised Weber not to drive out to Englewood by herself, but was nonetheless proud of her. “When she decided to do that I was shocked. I told her to be careful and just be aware of her surroundings. It definitely took courage from her,” she said. For her, though, it was an easy decision. “I couldn’t let them stay in that condition,” Weber said. “I just really love animals. I can’t watch those commercials with the malnourished dogs on TV. If I see a dog or cat running around stray, I pull the car over.”

Holocaust survivor relates his story to 8th graders SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BOLINGBROOK – Fear, sickness, beatings, hunger and lack of sleep were among the horrors of World War II portrayed to eighth graders Feb. 14. “It was terrible,” Holocaust survivor George Levy Mueller told students at Humphrey Middle School. “The Nazis were capable of anything.” The 83-year-old Mueller, who now lives in Glen Ellyn, captivated students with the story of his journey from a happy 8-year-old in Germany to a teenager in concentration camps and ultimately to freedom once World War II ended. Near the end of his ordeal, “I was so hungry, I gnawed on a piece of wood” and “I had hundreds of lice running all
over my body.” It all began in northwest Germany where he lived in a nice house and his father owned his own business. But in 1938, things began to change. “They burned all the synagogues and began beating up Jewish people,” Mueller said. His mother, father and younger sister were forced to leave their home and move into a very crowded home with other families. And soon his father was taken to a concentration camp, only to return six weeks later so sick that he died. In April 1939, his mother was able to send Mueller and his sister to Holland, but she did not accompany the then 8and 4-year-olds.
“I’ll never forget waving to her as the train left the station,” Mueller said. “That was the last time I ever saw her.” A guardian took charge of them in Holland where they stayed in a convent with nuns who were part of the underground resistance. But a year later, the Germans overran Holland in five days and they made all Jewish people wear a yellow star. “I was in third grade. It was very embarrassing,” Mueller said. “It was like standing in the corner with a dunce cap on every day.” In 1943, after going into hiding for a while, they were sent to Vught Concentration Camp in Holland. “It was like walking into a different world,” he said. “We
didn’t get a lot to eat. The food was terrible. It was dirty. It was crowded. And there were a lot of beatings.” But what everyone most feared was the regular posting of lists of people who were transported to what turned out to be “death camps.” Mueller believes he and his sister never made the list because their Dutch guardian had forged some paperwork that said they were only half Jewish. In September 1943, they were moved to another concentration camp in Holland and in 1944 they took a “transport” to the same camp in Germany where Anne Frank died. “It was really, really cold there and everybody was sick,” Mueller said as he recalled wearing shoes and clothing
with holes in them and feces everywhere. “We were very weak and very thin. We got bread every three days. The bread was made with sawdust.” In April 1945, he and his sister boarded what is now called “the lost transport” which wandered around Germany for 13 days, stopping only to bury the dead…and there were many who died because there was no food and “we were crowded like sardines.” Liberation came on the 13th day. “One morning I heard a woman yell ‘We’re free! We’re free!’ and I looked out the window and saw Russian soldiers,” he said. “It was one of the happiest days of my life. Mueller came to America in 1947.

BOLINGBROOK – A Bolingbrook physician faces charges after he allegedly prescribed OxyContin illegally to an undercover agent and submitted false claims to Medicare, according to a news release from the United State’s Attorney’s Office Northern District of Illinois. Sathish Narayanappa Babu, 47, is charged with one count of conspiracy to illegally dispense a controlled substance and one count of health care fraud, the release stated. Federal agents executed search and seizure warrants at his home and office Feb. 19, taking more than $100,000 from the bank accounts of his Darienbased business, Anik Life Sciences Medical Corp. Between November 2012 and December 2013, Babu issued five prescriptions for 60 doses of 80 milligram strength OxyContin to an agent posing as a patient, despite having never seen or examined the person,

according to the release, which cited a criminal complaint. The agent told Babu they were healthy and were covered by Medicare, but were seeking to obtain Oxycodone because of shoulder pain from a previous injury that put them on disability, the release stated. Babu allowed unlicensed personnel associated with his business to issue prescriptions and provide other purported medical care to the patient, according to the release. He also submitted claims to Medicare for services he said had been provided to the patient that had not. The nearly 300 pills prescribed were paid for primarily by Medicare. Babu was released on a $100,000 bond and prohibited from writing prescriptions or submitting claims to Medicare, the release stated. He was scheduled for a court hearing Tuesday. The charges against him carry a maximum combined penalty of 30 years in prison and $1.25 million in fines, according to the release.
BOLINGBROOK – Two men were allegedly caught with heroin Feb. 17 in the bathroom of a fast-food restaurant. Lt. Mike Rompa said officers from the Problem-Oriented Policing Unit were called about 7:50 p.m. to Burger King, 331 S. Bolingbrook Drive, after witnesses suspected drug activity. Police arrived to find Robert A. Lenning, 44, of the 300 block of East Washington Street in Joliet, and Kevin J. Thompson, 25, of the 16000 block of South Legion Court in Plainfield with heroin, Rompa said.
Thompson allegedly fought with the police as he was taken into custody and was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, drug possession, marijuana possession, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jail records indicate Thompson has previously been arrested on charges of marijuana possession, domestic battery, criminal trespassing, vandalism and possession of a stolen firearm. Jail records indicate Lenning has been jailed twice for driving on a suspended license. Both men are being held on $20,000 bond.
8NEWS BRIEFS Man arrested on charges of dealing pot in library BOLINGBROOK – Police say a 25-year-old man was dealing pot at the Fountaindale Public Library Feb. 19. Lt. Mike Rompa said an anonymous tip sent police to the library at 300 W. Briarcliff Road where they found Christopher M. Long.
“Further investigation revealed he possessed cannabis in his backpack,” Rompa said. Police found 91 grams of marijuana in the bookbag, Rompa said. Long, of the first block of Fernwood Drive, was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana and marijuana possession and booked into the county jail.

ROMEOVILLE – Court documents show the 23-year-old Cicero man charged with fatally shooting his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend last week in Romeoville had previously threatened to rape and kill her. Erick M. Maya, 23, of the 5600 block of Central Park Avenue in Cicero, was charged Erick M. w i t h m u r d e r Maya Feb. 18. He pleaded not guilty. He previously had been charged with two counts of attempted murder. The charge was upgraded after Briana Valle, 15, died Feb. 17. She was shot in the head while with her mother, Alicia Guerrero, 33, in the driveway outside their Romeoville home Feb. 13. Her mother was shot in the neck but is recovering from her wound. Guerrero took out an emergency order of protection last year against Maya, and said she and her daughter feared for their safety. Maya threatened to rape and kill Valle last year, according to court documents, and the order of protection was extended last month. Maya and Valle, a Romeoville High School student, had been in a previous dating relationship, police said. Court documents show Maya had been harassing the mother via text messages beginning in January 2013. In March, the mother filed an order of protection in Cook County, where the family lived before moving to Romeoville in October. In December, Maya allegedly texted one of Valle’s friends,
saying he planned to rape the mother and daughter and kidnap Valle. Valle met Maya on Facebook in June 2012, and they ran away together in August of that year, according to court documents. The mother found her daughter at Maya’s Cicero home, but, according to court documents, chose not to press charges because “at this time my daughter was obsessed with Erick.” Valle’s obsession with Maya apparently turned to fear by December, according to court documents filed by her mother. Guerrero stated that her daughter “doesn’t want to hear from him anymore” and that she feels “afraid of him and what he might do to us.” “I fear for our safety,” the mother stated. Maya is accused of opening fire on Valle and her mother as they were in their car at about 7 a.m. outside their home in the 300 block of Emery Avenue. Will County prosecutors had previously charged Maya with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. One attempted murder charge was dropped as prosecutors charged Maya with the murder of Valle. His bond was set at $5 million. A preliminary hearing was set for 9 a.m. March 11 at the Will County Courthouse. A release from Valley View School District said students and staff planned last week to wear blue and orange as a sign of unity and support for the Valle family. The school will also put counseling support in place for any students who need assistance dealing with the loss.

Valley View tightens security in response to recent incidents SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BOLINGBROOK – Following two recent incidents that resulted in lockdowns in Romeoville and Bolingbrook schools, Valley View School District 365U officials say they have re-doubled efforts to ensure the safest possible environment for children and staff. Superintendent James Mitchem Jr. detailed several changes, including an increase in both the number of lockdown drills as well as the times of day

during which the drills will take place, in a news release. “We plan on holding drills before and after school and during lunchtime in all of our schools, as well as during passing periods in all of our middle schools and high schools,” Mitchem said. “We want to make sure everyone is prepared for as many scenarios as possible.” On Jan. 30, a male student pointed what he thought was a

congratulations to Don Orseno, who became Metra’s executive director Jan. 31. Lipinski asked Orseno to address the issue, also asking him to address Heritage Corridor services with Canadian National Railway Company, the owner of the railway. Canadian National has said the railroad needs infrastructure improvements before more trains can be added. “Metra is going to have to push and put pressure on CN,” Lipinski said. “Metra has been unable to move on this in the past. I’m hopeful with more sta-
bility at the head, we can move forward and try to encourage CN to add more service.” Orseno issued a statement saying he shared the congressman’s goals for increasing performance on all railway lines. “I look forward to working with him on these very important Heritage Corridor issues,” Orseno said. Lipinski said ridership on the line has increased 25 percent in the past 10 years. But service has not changed enough to accommodate the higher traffic, and CN has been unwilling to cooperate to provide more train service. CN spokesman Patrick Waldron said CN senior officials have regularly talked with
Lipinski and Metra officials regarding the Heritage Corridor line. But infrastructure upgrades must be made before the line, also used by Amtrak and for freight, can accommodate more Metra trains, he said. “The issue is in order to add more commuter service. Capacity studies show infrastructure upgrades are needed,” Waldron said, adding CN is more than willing to work with Metra to obtain grants to improve the infrastructure of the railway. Lipinski said he understood the concerns with railway infrastructure, but thinks CN can make room for another train without significant upgrades.

Tri County SRA can help you chase away those winter blues As winter winds down (we hope!), get rid of cabin fever with some of the programs from the winter/spring program guide. Download it from our website, www.tricountysra.org, and check out what’s in it for you. If you haven’t done so already, turn in a new annual information form before you register. Here’s the scoop on upcoming programs. On COMMUNITY March 8, we are offering VOICE Chords for Kids for ages 10 Karen and older. Music and motion Gestautas come together as children with autism and other special needs enjoy a concert performance in Naperville. Our Spring Breakers sessions (ages 5 to 15) are always popular, but this year, they are scheduled to coincide with a trip to the DuPage Children’s Museum. Registrations for both programs are taken separately. So now you have a fun place to spend spring break and a field trip to look forward to also. For those with a sweet tooth, we are offering Delightful Desserts, (ages 13 and older), a chance to make delicious treats to enjoy and share. Lunch Bunch will take us (ages 16 and older) out to three local golf course restaurants for some first-class meals with friends. The first trip is March 16 to P.B. Mulligan’s at the Prairie Bluff Public Golf Course in Lockport. Bring your appetite. Looking forward to playing outdoors again? Sign up for Busy Bodies (ages 4 to 12). Starting in April, we’ll drive to different parks every Tuesday after school for fun on the playground. Another after school program with varied activities in our community is Saved by the Bell, for ages 14 to 22, taking place on Wednesdays starting in April. Teens Only, for ages 13 to 19, will give you a good start to your weekend, starting midApril on Fridays. And if you want to get your body moving, we have our new kickball program, for 15 and older, and Water Aerobics, for 12 and older, on Saturdays starting in April. Our first parent education program takes place March 12. We’re offering these programs for parents and caregivers to learn how to navigate the disability system in their county. The Service of Will, Grundy and Kankakee Counties Inc. will present integral information on how to get outside services for your child. It’s a great opportunity to get your questions answered and network with others. Hope to see you!

The Will County Mobile Workforce Center will make weekly stops outside Fountaindale Library every Monday starting in March.
The recession of a few years ago is long ended, but some folks are still having a tough time finding work. That’s why it’s such a great idea for the Will County Mobile Workforce Center to make weekly stops outside Fountaindale Library every Monday. If you’ve been unemployed for a while, stop by and take advantage of their free help with your resume, cover letters and job applications. How far would you go to save a group of puppies from a bad end? We’re not sure we should encourage folks to emulate Lauren Weber of Bolingbrook, who drove alone to a tough Chicago neighborhood to retrieve 12 pit bull puppies from a bad situation. But we certainly admire her courage and commitment to animal welfare, and the good news that the puppies are safe and on the path toward adoption.

ASPIRIN CAUTION
Q: I take aspirin daily. Are there any dental considerations of which I should be aware? A: Aspirin is a proven pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, and it can help reduce fever. You do, however, have to be careful in its use. Because aspirin thins the blood, some people are on a daily low-dose aspirin regimen as part of blood-pressure treatment or because of heart problems. One danger aspirin poses on the dentalhealth front is the practice by some folks of chewing aspirin. Chewing aspirin can severely damage the teeth’s enamel. It can also harm the soft tissue of the mouth. Some people are hesitant about swallowing a whole aspirin pill or don’t want to wait for a tablet to dissolve in water, so they pop the tablet in their mouth and crush it with their teeth. Studies have found that a steady practice of that, especially among people who take multiple aspirins daily, can significantly erode teeth. Another harmful practice is to press aspirin against the gum as treatment for a toothache. The acid in aspirin can burn the soft tissue of the gum. Because, as mentioned above, aspirin is a blood thinner, talk with your dentist about your intake if you are planning any oral surgery. Naturally, you should always make your dentist aware of any medication you are taking. Ask him or her about the proper role of aspirin in your overall health-care plan.

Your Dogs Home Away From Home While You’re On Spring Break Vacation…. Who’s Going Love and Take Care Of Your Beloved Pet Florida, Hawaii, or the Bahamas…..Where are you going for Spring break? You don’t care as long as you’re not here and it’s warm … right? The temperature has been relentless and brutal. Basically I feel like that old pizza that you forget about in the back of the freezer that hasn’t been seen in a year. Frozen and covered in ice crystals that have actually burned the food by being too cold for too long. Too long is right…. Now that you know you’re going someplace warm do you have a place for your pet to enjoy their time away during their vacation? …No well maybe I can help you in making that decision. Firstly I know how hard this is…you’re not sure if the neighbors can watch them or the in-laws have the time…they like to go on vacation too. Secondly what are the options, vet…kennel….day
care center…how do you decide? (drum roll please) Solution… you gotta Do A Tour. You Gotta meet the people. As you know …You know your pet best. You will make your decision based on how you connect with that person that will be in the care of your pet. It takes a bit of time to visit and get a feel for the people but its really the best way to do it. I know I’m biased because this is what I do but having done this for nearly 13 years this is what people say to me. They are glad that they came out to visit us and they were very happy to see the facilities and go through the daily routine. I can say all sorts of nice things but here are some of our reviews… 12/8/2010 David from Willow Brook We been using this kennel for 8 years. We are very happy with the care and attention our 2 dogs receive. The dogs are actually excited to go there! The staff play with them daily and give them baths before pick-up.
5/25/2012 Mike from Lombard These guys are awesome. Other than the dog park, this is the only place that my dog actually gets excited when we pull up in the parking lot. They’re always nice, they LOVE my boxer Fenny, and she’s always in high spirits when we pick her up. We will continue to always use this place. I have talked your ear off…if you have any questions please give us call at 630-969-3145. We actually live on the property with our pet clients so this is more than just a job… this is home for us Give us a call at 630-969-3145 we would love to show you our little slice of heaven. Budget and local business remain hot topics at D-58 breakfast BY ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Lawmakers addressing questions at the annual School District 58 Legislative Breakfast steered answers toward a common theme Friday morning – fix Illinois’ budget and encourage business to stay in the state. “If you care about any issue, you really need to care about the budget,” state Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said. “Because everything is budget-driven, regardless of what your priority is.” Radogno was joined by state Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, state Rep. Patricia Bellock, R-Hinsdale,
and U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., hosted at O’Neill Middle School in Downers Grove. Sandack pointed toward Medicaid and other entitlement programs – along with pensions – as major items taking a bite from other budget pie slices. “Education, human services and infrastructure have been continually cut because of the growth of Medicaid and pensions,” he said. “The growth [of Medicaid] has been shocking. It’s a phenomenal program, but our goal should be to get it to the people who should be in the program. Unfortunately, it’s grown exponentially, beyond its ability to handle it. [It’s also] true with pensions.”

Continued from page 8 real gun at a Bolingbrook High School teacher, police said. The gun was later determined to be a BB gun, according to police. The student was charged with felony disorderly conduct and aggravated assault. Then on Feb. 13, a Romeoville High School student and her mother were shot – the daughter, freshman Briana Valle, later died – outside their home in the 300 block of Emery Avenue, just a block from Irene H. King Elementary School. The release also states that Valley View

Roskam talked at length about Illinois’ struggle to retain and attract businesses and residents, to which he blamed tax policy. He said Washington generally regards Illinois politics as a punchline. “We’ve got governors who laugh out loud on WLS radio with the talk show hosts, who talk about stealing jobs from Illinois,” he said. “And they say it’s just the easiest thing in the world. You put up a billboard on the Tri-State that says come to Indiana. “And Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana, loves it. So we’ve got all these other states around us with a similar political DNA as we do, who have basically figured this out.”
will work to increase connections with the community by re-establishing the successful Friends and Neighbors Supporting Students program in both high schools and at all five middle schools, and by placing an emphasis on establishing proactive student support groups. “It is impossible for any school district to guarantee that an event cannot happen on the campus,” Mitchem continued. “But our parents can rest assured that Valley View School District’s security system, which is recognized as one of the most comprehensive in the state, is designed to do everything it can to keep our children and staff safe.”

Roskam went on to praise Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and the reforms he enacted to bring the state’s budget into the black. “We can have an economy that is growing and we’re not grubbing around and playing this zero-sum game, pitting one group against another for a shrinking pie,” Roskam said. “Let’s reject that. Instead let’s say, ‘Hey, let’s have an economy that’s going like some of these other states,’ where companies are coming in and saying we want to invest and want to be prosperous.” Radogno shared Roskam’s concern with Illinois’ shrinking population, which she also blamed on tax policy. “The scariest statistic I
see is the number of people leaving Illinois,” she said. “Illinois has so many great resources and yet people are going to other states.” Talk during the roughly hour-long panel discussion typically avoided education policy and programs, sticking with the budget and business theme, and the squeeze that puts on education funding. Lawmakers did answer one question directly, when asked if funding for Preschool for All would return to peak 2009 state funding levels of $380 million. That figure has fallen to $80 million. Lawmakers acknowledged the importance of early childhood education, but bluntly answered “no” – there is not room in the budget.
Valley View makes security changes at BHS • A new alarm system has been installed that alerts the staff of a hard lockdown and contacts the police, without needing to use the intercom system. • In an effort to prevent students from opening exit doors during the day without an alarm going off, exit door alarms are being installed on doors 8, 10, 11, 14. These doors have been identified as off-limits for use during the school day.
This will decrease the chances of an intruder entering the building unnoticed. • An exterior strobe light system is being installed on the exterior of the building at doors 1 and 17 that will alert anyone outside the building when the school is in a hard or soft lockdown. • The frequency of random searches will be significantly increased.

On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless. Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all. There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer. Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels. As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own. We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

The “super grande platter” of appetizers usually features mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels; on a recent location, according to its onthe baked brownie bottom pie evening, mini corn dogs were substituted for the mozzarella. line beer list. They’ve got all (again, topped with ice cream, it was terrific. Strips of skirt steak are sautéed with fresh garlic and mushrooms, then combined with red wine and brown sauce over fettuccine. Add a dollop of sour cream and the dish is complete. If I hadn’t been so full from the appetizer, I easily could have polished it off; instead, it made for a terrific lunch the next day. My companion was similarly stuffed from the appetizer, and selected the pot
roast over the pot pie, reasoning that the pot pie likely wouldn’t reheat as well. The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly. Bulldog Ale House offers 32 beers on draft and 22 in bottles at the Carol Stream
the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you. As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or
whipped cream and chocolate syrup). But then, who’s going to make it as far as dessert when the appetizer and meal portions are so tasty and generous? Maybe if we just split an entree …

t National University of Health Sciences, if you’ve finished your general education requirements, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science in as little as 16 months. Not only that, NUHS gives you the freedom to tailor your own degree program by letting you create a course list that matches your unique goals. Whether you plan to use your science education for a career in business, health care, or as a prelude to graduate school, you can construct a specific program to give you the best preparation. According to Dr. Randy Swenson, dean of NUHS’ College of Allied Health Sciences, “You can choose from any combination of courses in our BS program to complete your bachelor’s degree. There are no required core courses, just a requirement that you earn 64 credits. So no matter which of our many courses you pick to meet those credits, you’re on track.” That means that if you are interested in medical administration or hospital work, you can choose courses in Medical Spanish, Medical Terminology and Computer Software. Planning a career in sports and fitness, how about adding courses in Sports and Performance Nutrition, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology? If you are looking for a place in research or laboratory work, you might choose courses in Research Methods and Statistics, or Epidemiology. If you want to learn more about how the brain works, NUHS offers Biopsychology and Neuroscience. “Most of our students are interested in nutrition,” Dr. Swenson says. “That’s why NUHS has six separate courses in nutrition and food science available in the BS program.” NUHS is a primary destination for those seeking a professional career in natural health care. Originally founded in 1906 as a single purpose chiropractic college, National’s academic programs now encompass chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, oriental medicine, massage therapy, and more. The best part of earning your bachelor’s degree at National University is that you’ll be taught by many of the same faculty who teach in the professional degree programs, and you’ll use the graduate-level facilities of one of the world’s top universities specializing in natural medicine. NUHS boasts an outstanding library of 13,000+ volumes devoted to health science, a cadaver-based gross anatomy laboratory, as well as an on-campus student clinic where you can take advantage of free health services. NUHS’ beautiful 35-acre Lombard campus is conveniently located in suburban Chicago, and offers on-campus housing, financial aid counseling, a student fitness center, and several student social and professional networking organizations. Want to learn more? Visit www.nuhs.edu to apply online, schedule a visit, or view the entire line-up of course descriptions and start envisioning how NUHS can help prepare you for your future goals.

usy adults need to make the most of their time. Work and family commitments keep down time to a minimum, so taking on the additional load of a college student is a big decision. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals. With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school. “Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions
like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager. The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education. The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world. Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers
seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Northwood students work with one advisor from application all the way to graduation, assisting them with registration, academic advising, financial aid and ordering books. “With classes in eight-week and weekend formats, students can complete two or more courses in the same 16-weeks it takes traditional students to complete one class,” she says. Students also have the opportunity to earn credit for work and military experience. One student earned 27 credits for her prior work experience, Rosen said. “This made a tremendous impact on the quality of her life by enabling her to complete her degree faster and with substantial savings on top of it.”

3 KEYS TO VICTORY
Raiders clinch conference with 52-50 win By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
BOLINGBROOK – Goal achieved for Gage Davis and Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team. The Raiders set out to win a SouthWest Suburban Blue conference title this season, and Friday’s 52-50 win over Homewood-Flossmoor completed Bolingbrook’s season sweep of the Vikings and clinched the outright SWSB crown, the program’s first conference title since the 2008-09 season. Last season, the Raiders finished second to the Vikings in conference. “That was a really big goal this season,” Davis said of winning the conference. “I didn’t think it would feel this good, especially to clinch it against H-F like this, with the student section we had, that was really nice.” There were three keys to Bolingbrook’s win.

2. Student support
The Raiders had the support of a vocal student section that was into the game well before tipoff. While the game came down to execution on the court, Bolingbrook’s students certainly helped their team get going. “The student section was unbelievable,” Bolingbrook head coach Rob Brost said. “The students were great, and the support from the school has been unbelievable. That really gives our kids energy and we really want to perform well for them. Even on the road, we’ve had student sections bigger than the other schools’. That’s exciting to see when you sit 1. As a result, H-F never settled into a rhythm on 19 points, but Bolingbrook had contributions up and down the offense. “We wanted to change it up lineup. Tony Smith led Bolingbrook to four state titles and appearances in an additional two state championship games during his successful tenure as girls basketball coach. Now the head coach at Homewood-Flossmoor, Smith and the Vikings were suspended from the postseason last week over rules violations. moor recently asked the IHSA to review the findings of its own internal investigation, which stemmed from a lawsuit filed by one of its current
players. The school’s investigation did not produce any violations. The violations center on the IHSA’s Independent Team
On the morning of February 19, the school asked to appear before the IHSA Board of Directors’ regularly scheduled meeting on the same day. Hickman provided an official ruling when school officials arrived, suspending the team and Smith from participating in the playoffs, at which point the school appealed the ruling before the Board. Hickman said more violations, potentially involving other sports at H-F, may be discovered as the investigation continues. “We are still in the initial review of what occurred at the school and when,” Hickman said. “From the information provided thus far, other programs at the school may have also violated the Season Limitation and Open Gym by-laws. However, we will not know the full scope of the possible violations until we have completed our investigation. The investigation into the aforementioned recruiting violations is ongoing as well.”
Benet, Bolingbrook boys earn top postseason seeds The Class 3A and 4A boys basketball playoffs tip off next week, and while teams from the area will head different directions at the start of the postseason, the end goal is the same — to reach Carver Arena in Peoria for the state finals March 21 and 22.

No. 16 Lemont or No. 17 Oswego East Outlook: The Redwings’ 16-7 record as of Feb. 21 may not look all that impressive, but they definitely earned their No. 1 seed in the sectional. Benet has not lost to a team with a losing record, and in defeats against Fenwick, Marian Catholic, St. Viator and Stevenson, last year’s state runner-up, the Redwings have faced some of the best teams and players in
the state. Sean O’Mara, a 6-foot-9 Xavier recruit, is the centerpiece of Benet’s offense and is one of the top post players in the state. The senior is a dangerous player in the paint, both offensively and defensively, but the Redwings also have a host of dangerous shooters, Collin Pellettieri, Colin Bonnett and Liam Nelligan among them, that complement O’Mara’s play. Benet advanced to the sectional championship game last season, and a similar playoff run isn’t out of the question this year. If the Redwings win their playoff opener, they will advance to the regional title game at 7 p.m. March 7, where they would face either No. 8 Waubonsie Valley or No. 9 Naperville North.

Gage Davis (IPFW) and Kenny Williams (Eastern Michigan) are college-bound seniors, and Prentiss Nixon and Julian Torres are juniors who seem destined to play at the next level, but the Raiders’ core goes deeper than that. Josh Dillingham, Shakur Triplett, C.J. Redmond, Devon Sams and Brodric Thomas have also had standout games this season, and that depth should serve Bolingbrook well in the postseason. The outright champions of the SouthWest Suburban Blue conference, the Raiders, the top seed in the regional, would move on to the regional title game at 7 p.m. March 7 with a win against DGS or Batavia.

jans so far, but they have the pieces in place to make some noise in the postseason. In 6-foot-7 junior forward David Edwards and 6-5 sophomore Matt Mahlke, North has a solid presence in the paint. Guard Myles Farley and forward Ray Greco provide veteran leadership, while sophomore and varsity newcomer Devin Blake is an explosive playmaker that creates matchup problems for opposing defenses. Hinsdale South has size to match with 6-foot-8 Barret Benson, and Larry Motuzis is another playmaker to keep an eye on. With a win over the Hornets, the Trojans would face No. 4 Hinsdale Central in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

with an abundance of size, so the secret to the Mustangs’ success is no secret. Anyone that has seen them play knows their strength is the outside shot. But knowing about it and stopping it are two different things, and since the calendar flipped to 2014, South has been on fire from long range. Danny Spinuzza, Paul Engo III, Wes Dahle, Kovas Rugienius, Mantas Augustinavicius and Matt Zinnecker can all bury the 3-pointer, but teams that over-commit to defending the perimeter pay the price because all those players, plus Darryl Howard, Javon Turner and DeAndre Washington, are all capable of slashing to the hoop and finishing at the rim. If the Mustangs can move past Batavia, they would face Bolingbrook in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The playoff road for head coach Tony Smith and Homewood-Flossmoor’s highly regarded girls basketball team was cut short Feb. 19. It was announced in a release on the Illinois High School Association website that the team was suspended from participating in the IHSA state playoffs for a series of IHSA by-law violations it committed with Smith at the helm of the program. Smith was formerly the girls basketball head coach at Bolingbrook High School. After leading the Raiders to four state titles and three other state trophies, Smith resigned as Bolingbrook’s head coach in May of 2013 before landing at H-F. After taking over at H-F, Bolingbrook players Amarah Coleman, Destiny Harris, Kristen Moore and Lexi Smith transferred there. The violations came to light after Homewood-Floss-
Participation, Athletic Season Limitation and Open Gym Limitation by-laws. “Not adhering to these by-laws created a distinct advantage for the Homewood-Flossmoor girls’ basketball program,” IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman said. “The school has admitted to violating [the season limitation and team participation] by-laws. In fairness to the teams in the state tournament who abided by IHSA rules, removing Homewood-Flossmoor from competition was the most equitable decision.” In addition to suspending the Vikings from postseason play, the IHSA required them to forfeit their regular-season wins from the 2013-14 season. On the evening of February 18, the school initially indicated to the IHSA that it would self-impose suspensions of 11 of its current varsity players and head coach Anthony Smith over the violations, but that the team would participate in the playoffs with other players.
