Why Shop Locally?

The math for buying close to home is compelling - for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $73 remains in the local economy, and $27 leaves. Compare that to the same $100 spent at a nonlocally owned business, where $43 remains in the local economy and $57 leaves. Recent research from Civic Economics indicates that local eateries return nearly 79% of revenues to the community, compared to just over 30% for chain restaurants. “When profits stay local, it increases the community’s wealth, tax revenue and standard of living,” says Sue Lynn Sasser, Ph.D. and professor of economics at the University of Central Oklahoma.

“Small businesses and local businesses are still the backbone of our economy,” Sasser adds.

“They are local people serving local people and are generally committed to staying there, raising their families. After all, most businesses started out as a small, local business and earned the success of growing and expanding. It’s the American dream.”

T

he Village of Bartlett Board of Trustees and I continue to keep business retention and recruitment on the forefront of every decision we make. While the pandemic is still ongoing, our business community has learned how to navigate it and has demonstrated just how resilient it can be. From a village perspective, if we tried to find a silver lining, it is that our relationships with the business community and our residents have grown even stronger.

The Village welcomes all businesses, from small mom-and-pop establishments on Main Street to Fortune 500 companies that produce goods and provide services at what continues to be the gold standard for business parks, Brewster Creek and Blue Heron. This past year, there has been demonstrated growth in both small buildouts and large-scale industrial development at both parks.

Two years ago, the former Bartlett Plaza was more than 50 percent vacant and in disrepair. Today, through the Village Board’s support via the Bartlett Economic Development Assistance (BEDA) Grant Program, the center has been rebranded as the Streets of Bartlett, has attained full occupancy, and is a vibrant gathering place where families can dine at a variety of restaurants and go bowling at the Midway Landing Lanes.

Several Village resident entrepreneurs have opened a variety of businesses throughout the downtown area, and if you add to that the return of local festivals and events, downtown Bartlett has once again become a place to get together with others

– whether for a cup of coffee, a date night dinner, pizza or burgers with the family, unique shopping, an art exhibit or musical performance, and more.

These developments, both large and small, require collaboration and every possible tool from the economic development toolbox.

With 80 different nationalities and 30 languages spoken in Hanover Park, we are, as our tagline says, “America’s Global Village.” Hanover Park is known for responsible fiscal government, and I am proud to say that for the sixth consecutive year, the Village of Hanover Park will have a zero percent property tax increase and no increase to the water and sewer rate for the seventh year.

Please visit our new Ontarioville Plaza in the ‘downtown’ area, south and west of the Metra train station! This area is ripe for development as it re-imagines the future to diversify land uses with a variety of new housing types, as well as enhanced retail, public spaces, and entertainment uses. The Plaza, with its new interactive water feature, seat walls, Tivoli lighting, and stage area, is a welcoming destination for residents and visitors. While you are there, take a casual walk through Ontarioville Park that is designed for pedestrian comfort. Take a moment to sit, relax, and enjoy these public spaces that are open year-round. The plaza and park area host a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

The Village of Hanover Park takes pride in honoring and assisting Veterans. In November of 2021, the U.S. Department of Labor presented the Village of Hanover Park with the 2021 HIRE Vets Medallion

Program Demonstration Award for the second year in a row for recognition of its employment of military veterans. The Village received a Gold level award in the medium sized employer category.

Hanover Park is one of only two municipalities in the State of Illinois to receive this honor. Stop by the front of Village Hall and visit our Veterans Memorial Plaza where members of the community can remember and honor loved ones who have served our country in the nation’s different service branches.

chool District U-46, where “All Means All,” serves families in the following 11 northwestern Chicago suburban communities: Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, South Elgin, Streamwood and Wayne, and parts of Carol Stream, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Schaumburg, and West Chicago. The 90-square mile District stretches across three counties: Cook, DuPage, and Kane Counties.

More than 36,000 preschool through 12th grade students attend School District U-46, with more than half coming from Hispanic families. About one-third of students are English Learners, which led to the development of the District’s renowned Dual Language program. The program currently serves more than 12,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Dual Language students alternate between English and Spanish while learning core concepts in science, language arts, and math. This award-winning program produces students who are bilingual, biliterate, and ready for the 21st century.

The District’s mission is “to be a great place for all students to learn, all teachers to teach, and all employees to work.” There are 57 District schools and programs in this vibrant district where students cite 98 home languages.

Each of the District’s five high schools houses one specialized Magnet Academy, and U-46 has national accreditations in our Career and Technical Education programs, including automotive, precision manufacturing, and welding. All students are screened for eligibility in gifted programming; more than 1,500 students in 4th through 8th grade are currently in gifted education.

“We create fun!...by providing the finest in parks, programs, and recreational facilities for our community.” On January 18, 1964, Bartlett Park District began a legacy that now includes 577 acres of owned land as well as an additional 20 leased acres, encompassing a wide array of interests and recreation. Bartlett Park

District boats 43 parks, two pools, a community center, a banquet facility, two golf courses, a ski hill, an athletic field complex, a nature center, and more! A diverse listing of programs includes aquatics, athletics (adult and youth), before and after school recreation, camps, dance, golf, winter sports, fitness, environmental programs, parties

and rentals, pre-school, and theater.

With 21 parks and facilities, the Hanover Park Park District brings the community together through shared green space, seasonal events, and outdoor activities.

Each park offers something slightly different; guests can game it up at Edgebrook Park’s playground and basketball court, or explore nature with Heritage Park’s fishing, biking trails, and picnic area. During the warmer months, the Seafari Springs Aquatic Center creates a watery wonderland with water slides and pools, while local garden plots encourage community members to plant fruits and vegetables. The Foundation seeks to raise funds for and oversee the construction of a monument to honor the men and women who served our country in the Armed Forces. Dedicated in 2012, the first phase of the memorial shows a soldier mourning a fallen comrade, represented by a boot, gun, and helmet. It is surrounded by four memorial benches, a flag for each military branch, an American flag, and a walkway with engraved bricks with donors’ names. It is located at the southeast corner of Stearns and South Bartlett Roads.

The Bartlett Public Library Foundation provides additional revenue sources to enhance library services and capital improvements that are not financed through property taxes.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars offers services to military veterans through its mission to foster camaraderie among military veterans of overseas conflicts. The organization advocates on behalf of all veterans and provides assistance for veterans seeking benefits. The Bartlett VFW participates in numerous community activities, such as the Bartlett Memorial Day Walk, Hanover Township Operation Support Our Troops event, Bartlett Fourth of July parade, Veterans Day activities, and a joint honor and color guard with the Bartlett American Legion at veteran memorial ceremonies.

The Bartlett Woman’s Club is one of the oldest volunteer organizations in Bartlett and is open to all women in the Bartlett area. The club’s mission is to be a philanthropic and social organization dedicated to serving the needs of the community and enriching the lives of both members and community residents.
