Why Shop Locally?

The math for buying close to home is compelling - for every $100 spent at a locallyowned business, $73 remains in the local economy, and $27 leaves. Compare that to the same $100 spent at a non-locally owned business, where $43 remains in the local economy and $57 leaves. Recent research from Civic Economics indicates that local eateries return nearly 79% of revenues to the community, compared to just over 30% for chain restaurants. “When profits stay local, it increases the community’s wealth, tax revenue and standard of living,” says Sue Lynn Sasser, Ph.D. and professor of economics at the University of Central Oklahoma.

“Small businesses and local businesses are still the backbone of our economy,” Sasser adds. “They are local people serving local people and are generally committed to staying there, raising their families. After all, most businesses started out as a small, local business and earned the success of growing and expanding. It’s the American dream.”

The Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to creating a thriving and vibrant business community through promoting and supporting local businesses, organizational, and individual members.

As a voluntary membership organization, the Chamber’s goal is to foster and promote business in Bartlett, Hanover Park, and the surrounding communities by providing networking opportunities, educational seminars, marketing, community involvement, and partnerships to member businesses, organizations, municipalities, community groups, and individuals.

The Chamber is pleased to provide this 2021 Business/ Community Resource Guide as an important and valuable resource, featuring the many benefits and services the Bartlett and Hanover Park Area have to offer. As a not-for-profit organization, the Chamber is dedicated to promoting the growth and retention of existing businesses and strives to enhance the value for every member. A dedicated staff and a committed Board of Directors work together in their commitment to make Bartlett and Hanover Park better communities for all. The Board is comprised of all volunteers who work closely to form partnerships at all levels – the Park Districts, Village Government, the Libraries, the School Districts, and Police Departments. In addition, one of the key roles of the Bartlett Area Chamber is to serve as an effective advocate for its members.

This includes educating members and keeping them informed of business and public policies that affect the business climate. The Chamber takes an active role in representing its members’ business interests and leveraging its relationships with local community leaders and elected officials at the local and state levels to act as the voice of our local business community.

The Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce encourages all local businesses to learn more about our organization and to take advantage of the membership benefits available. T

he Village Board and I have worked closely with staff throughout the year to support small, locally owned businesses that have been impacted the hardest by the COVID-19 public health crisis. As mitigation requirements changed, we also tried to change course and address each new need as it arose.

The Village created a Small Business Emergency Response Program to assist those mom-and-pop businesses, mostly restaurants, that suffered the largest declines in revenue during the lockdown in the spring of 2020. Twenty-two businesses received grants totaling nearly $75,000, helping them weather the most challenging months.

The lines of communication between the Village and Bartlett businesses are always open. Staff regularly sends emails to inform business owners of state and federal financial assistance programs, updates to public health and safety guidelines and other useful news. I have hosted multiple webinars on Zoom with the Chamber of Commerce and other government partners to share knowledge and keep everyone in the loop.

New businesses have continued to open in Bartlett, including restaurants 120 Live; One Taco Dos Tequilas; a relocated and expanded D’Licious Crepes & Roti and another quick casual restaurant called Hoot Dogs.

Bartlett’s industrial parks continue their impressive expansions. Pharmaceutical giant McKesson is currently completing its regional distribution facility in Brewster Creek Business Park. Logistics Property Company completed its two speculative buildings at Stearns

and Munger, and Conor Globe Commercial is going through the approval process for a 436,000 square foot warehouse building, that if greenlighted, will be the largest building in the village.

With additional smaller buildings completed during the year and several more on target for spring 2021, the village is well on its way to realizing a highly diversified local economy with successful industrial businesses in the food, automotive and light manufacturing sectors as well as multiple warehouse and distribution centers.

Since the village’s incorporation in 1891, Bartlett continues to grow while maintaining its unique hometown feel. Through the efforts of the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce, the Village is an open and welcoming place for commercial ventures of all sizes from Fortune 500 companies to sole proprietorships. At the same time, Bartlett’s harmonious mix of dining, shopping, business, educational and recreational resources create an ideal community in which to live and work.

chool District U-46, where “All Means All,” serves families in the following 11 northwestern Chicago suburban communities: Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, South Elgin, Streamwood and Wayne, and parts of Carol Stream, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Schaumburg, and West Chicago. The 90-square mile District stretches across three counties: Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties. More than 37,000 preschool through 12th grade students attend School District U-46, with more than half coming from Hispanic families. About one-third of students are English Learners, which led to the development of the District’s renowned Dual Language program. The program currently serves more than 11,000 students in kindergarten through 11th grade and will soon serve students through their senior year.

Dual Language students alternate between English and Spanish while learning core concepts in science, language arts, and math.

On January 18, 1964, Bartlett Park District began a legacy that now includes 577 acres of owned land as well as an additional 20 leased acres, encompassing a wide array of interests and recreation. Bartlett Park District boasts 43 parks, two pools, a

HANOVER PARK PARK DISTRICT With 21 parks and facilities, the Hanover Park District brings the community together through shared green space, seasonal events, and outdoor activities. The foundation seeks to raise funds for and oversee the construction of a monument to honor the men and women who have served our country in the Armed Forces. Dedicated in 2012, the first phase of the memorial shows a soldier mourning a fallen comrade, represented by a boot, gun, and helmet. It is surrounded by four memorial benches, a flag for each military branch, an American flag, and a walkway with engraved bricks with donors’ names.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars offers services to military veterans through its mission to foster camaraderie among military veterans of overseas conflicts. The organization advocates on behalf of all veterans and provides assistance for veterans seeking benefits. The Bartlett VFW participates in numerous community activities, such as the Bartlett Memorial Day Walk, Hanover Township Operation Support Our Troops event, Bartlett Fourth of July parade, Veterans Day activities, and a joint honor and color guard with the Bartlett American Legion at veteran memorial ceremonies.

With three locations in Streamwood, the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin gives hope to children needing it most. Programs offered encourage healthy lifestyles, academic, character and citizenship.
