Celebrate Newton High School’s Hall of Fame By Mark D. Hallam NHS Alumni Association Six Cardinals will be inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame as part of the All-Alumni Brunch, to
be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at NHS. The NHS Hall of Fame Ceremony is public recognition of those who have made exceptional achievements in their fields or provided outstanding
service to Newton High School. David Clement, the late Ole Eidahl, Dr. James Gaylor, Ph.D., Chad Guthrie, Dr. Thomas Shives M.D., and Avery Wilson make
David Clement (’67) Clement was a distinguished athlete at NHS. Earning 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track, he was named All-Conference in football and baseball multiple times, and All-State in football in 1966. Clement coached at Regina High School in Iowa City, Macomb High School in Illinois, and at Ottumwa High School, where he retired as an administrator after 31 years.

of inspiration to students, staff and visitors. This is the fourth year for the NHS Hall of Fame. It includes members from academics, arts, athletics, business, community service, ed-
ucation, government, and science. Tickets are available at Friday evening’s All-Classes Open House for $9, or online via NewtonAlumni.org. At the door, it will be $10.
Dr. James Gaylor (’52) During an accomplished career in biochemistry, Dr. Gaylor taught at Cornell University and the University of Missouri at Columbia. He became the Du Pont Company’s first director of biomedical research in 1980, and in 1987 vice president of Johnson & Johnson’s Corporate Office of Science and Technology. Dr. Gaylor’s research into the synthesis of cholesterol resulted in the authorship and co-authorship of more than 150 published articles.
Dr. Thomas Shives (’66)
Chad Guthrie (’89) Part of the Cardinal football teams coached by John Jenkins (NHS Hall of Fame, 2015), Guthrie was an Elite All-State running back. Street and Smith magazine named him Player of the Year, which accorded him prep All-American status. Guthrie became a 1991 NCAA Division II All-American while at Missouri State University in Kirksville, Mo., and was inducted into the Iowa High School Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
Dr. Shives graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1974. Joining the Mayo Clinic in 1979, he has a special interest in treating children and adults with bone and soft-tissue malignancies. He has published more than 100 academic papers and book chapters and served on the Editorial Board of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Dr. Shives was twice named the “Physician Communicator of the Year” by the Minnesota Medical Association. Now in his 38th year as a staff surgeon at Mayo Clinic, he also serves as Medical Editor and Co-host of Mayo Clinic Radio.
Avery Wilson (’47) It has been said Wilson is the most loyal fan of the Newton Cardinals. Self-described as having loved NHS since 1938, he holds a complete collection of NHS yearbooks, a comprehensive history of Cardinal football and basketball, and a collection of Cardinal football helmets dating from 1917 to the present. In addition to volunteer service to NHS and the community, Wilson donated new play clocks for H.A. Lynn Stadium in 2008 and the Cardinal statue at H.A. Lynn in 2016, both in memory of his late wife Delores (Terpstra, ’47).
Ole Eidahl Eidahl is celebrated as a longtime coach, teacher, and administrator at Newton High School. He coached football, cross country, and track, and was NHS’s first Athletic Director. Eidahl was described by his peers as possessing the ability to install in young men and women the desire to excel.

Newton High School Alumni Association Downtown events compliment Alumni Weekend By Mark D. Hallam NHS Alumni Association
The success of Newton High School graduates is one of the most enduring reasons to be proud of Newton, and the NHS Alumni Association has celebrated that tradition of Red Pride since 1882. One of the Alumni Association’s greatest responsibilities is Alumni Weekend, where local alumni will be joined by hundreds returning to Newton for 14 individual class reunions and three all classes events. All Classes Open House and Reunion, Iowa Speedway’s Newton Club: 6 p.m. - Midnight, Friday, June 2 Nearly 1,000 alumni, spouses, and friends come to this free, all-classes event in the Newton Club at the Iowa Speedway. Alumni of all ages attend, so you can meet and greet friends from high school and beyond, and from nearly all graduating classes. Staff from the Newton Alumni magazine, ALUMNI NEWS, will be on hand to listen to your stories and take informal pictures for our Fall 2017 issue. Get together with hundreds of Newton alumni and friends. Desperado at the All Classes Open House and Reunion, Iowa Speedway: 8:30 p.m. – 11 p.m., Friday, June 2 Outside the Newton Club’s main entrance, listen to Iowa’s popular band Desperado for part of the night. Founded by Cardinal alumni Steve Barnett (’74) and Ed Moore (’69), Desperado plays classic rock from the 60’s to the 2000’s. Great conversation inside the Newton Club and great music outside. High School: 10 a.m., Saturday, June 3 Reconnect with the school that still plays an important role in all our lives. The program includes the NHS Hall of Fame Ceremony, greetings from class representatives, introduction of retired teachers, and Class of 2017 officers. Principal Bill Peters and his staff have done their usual outstanding job at the high school this year, and during the program Bill will update guests on student achievements and campus improvements. Tours of the high school will be offered. The NHS Alumni Association and the NHS Hall of Fame Committee encourage alumni and the entire Newton community to attend. Purchase a ticket at Friday evening’s All-Classes Open House for $9 or online via NewtonAlumni.org. At the door, tickets will be $10. Class Window Walk: All Weekend. On the downtown Newton Square, enjoy all the Class Reunion windows. Ribbons are awarded for Best Overall, Most
Nostalgic, and Most Creative. Tour of EJH Beard Building, 1302 First Avenue West: 2 p.m., Sunday, June 4. Named after Iowa education pioneer E.J.H. Beard, superintendent of Newton schools from 1892 to 1912, the former Hy-Vee West building was totally remodeled to serve as the Newton Community School District’s administration center. This modern, cost-efficient structure also serves as home to West Academy, Newton’s alternative high school.

Downtown Newton has always held a special place in the hearts of current and former residents. Recognized in 2014 on National Register of Historic Places, Newton’s historic preservation district is considered “Mid-Century Modern,” the first such aesthetic designation in the state of Iowa. Learn more about the fascinating history of our downtown buildings during a walking tour to be led by local historian Larry Hurto, Chairman of the Newton Historic Preservation Commission. The Jasper County Courthouse, described upon its completion in 1911 as a “Temple of Justice,” is itself a testament to history. All floors consist of ceramic tile laid in mosaic patterns, with the pattern of the floor of the rotunda being the Seal of Jasper County. Above the marble columns on the third floor are four paintings by Edgar Cameron of Chicago, each illustrative of an incident in Jasper County’s history. Hear about the design and tour the Courthouse with Jasper County Auditor Dennis Parrott. The east and south lawns of the Courthouse are a memorial to Jasper County veterans. Joining
the bronze sculpture on the south lawn, created by Newton sculptor Nick Klepinger and which depicts a battle scene, are two displays on the east side dedicated in 2014. One black granite monument represents the five branches of the U.S. military with a portion of six walls containing bricks with names of veterans from Jasper County. Red bricks designate those who perished in the line of duty. A second is the veterans memorial stone, repainted in 2017 with a new theme by artist Nancy B. Bennett designed to honor all veterans. Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop will talk about the message behind Newton’s veterans monuments and offer insight into the tremendous hours of volunteer effort that went into their creation.
