Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are painful, recurrent lesions most commonly appearing on the lips and around the mouth.

You can often sense their occurrence by a tingling or burning sensation which then appears as a fluid-containing vesicle and eventually crusts over. The lesions reoccur at varying intervals, but are self-limiting and usually heal within 7-10 days. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus, which is contagious and can be transmitted by direct contact. Cold sores are precipitated by different circumstances in different people.

However, exacerbations tend to occur at times of stress, illness or when the person has been in the wind or sun. The primary goals of treatment are to control discomfort and allow for healing. The cold sore should be kept moist with a skin protectant such as petrolatum or cocoa butter to prevent drying and fissuring. Topical, local anesthetics like benzocaine may be used to relieve itching and pain. In addition, non-prescription analgesics may provide additional pain relief. Ask your pharmacist for help in choosing the product that is right for you.

CO-REC. Volleyball Osceola Parks & Recreation Department Team Registration

All manager’s of Co-Rec. Volleyball Teams, start preparing your teams now. The Department will be taking Team Registrations through October 25th, and limited to the first 24 teams. Either call or stop by the Parks & Recreation Office to register your team.

Games will be played on Wednesday evenings at the Jr./Sr. High School Gymnasiums. Registration Fee will be $75 per team. If there are enough teams for each, the League will be split into two divisions: Competitive and Recreational.

Please have an idea in which League your team would like to play. Managers will be notified of divisional play, rules, times of play, start date, etc.

Enid LaVonne Kendall, daughter of Henry William Siefkas and Eula LaRue Kelley (Siefkas) was born July 15, 1929 in Osceola, Iowa and passed from this life Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Southern Hills Specialty Care at 84 years of age.

Enid grew up on a farm in the Lacelle area. She attended Knox #2 country schools all of her grade school years. Her education continued in country schools through the elementary years and then came to Osceola, where she graduated from High School. She went on to Simpson and completed her education at Drake.

Enid began her career as a teacher in rural country schools with five years, three in Clarke and two in Wright County. She then worked at Saylor Feed & Grain, then became a catalog desk manager for J.C. Penney’s and went on to Hy-Vee Food Stores for nearly 15 years before being elected as the Clarke County Recorder, a position she held for 16 years and continued after retirement to work at Terrible’s Lakeside Casino for 12 years.

As a child, she attended the Lacelle Methodist Church, and then became acquainted with the beliefs in the Lutheran Church.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osceola and the Clarke County Republican Women. Enid worked very hard for the Republican Party. She enjoyed bowling and was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved football and basketball. She loved spending time with friends, family and especially having the kid’s friends at the house, conversing and counseling them and enjoyed hearing about her grandkids and great grandkids. She was never happy sitting idle!

Those relatives who preceded Enid in death was her parents; sisters, Myrna Delene Siefkas, Marcia Craig and brother, Stanley Siefkas, Enid leaves to cherish her memory; son, Mike (Sherrie) Kendall of San Diego, CA, son, Mark (Deborah) Kendall of Prescott, AZ, daughter, Allison Kendall of Osceola, IA, adoptive daughter, Kim(Allen) Huff-Haak of Lynden WA(whom she considered one of her own); Grandchildren, Erin Leigh Kendall-Porterfield (Bruce) of San Diego, CA, Jennifer Therese Dorenkamp (Clint) of Peoria, AZ; Great-Grandchildren, Ethan La Bounty, Avery Dorenkamp, Riley Porterfield and Jack Porterfield as well as other relatives and many friends.
