Summer of books Teenagers at the Addison Public Library complete Lego’s third-largest set on the market Aug. 1 as part of the Teen Summer Reading program. Almost 350 Addison teens read more than 1,000 books this summer, a 20-percent increase from 2013. The children’s reading program also saw a 63-percent increase in participation, with 1,255 kids reading as part of the program this year. They read for a total of 11,370 hours. SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Illinois veterans with permanent disabilities will have an easier time renewing their parking placards after a new law, introduced by state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, was signed Tuesday. Cullerton introduced the plan, which removes the requirement that veterans with permanent disabilities show evidence of their disability when reapplying for handicapped parking, according to a news release from Cullerton’s office. “For veterans with serious, permanent disabilities, it is disrespectful to ask them to prove that injury every four years. This is a way of making their lives easier,” Cullerton said. Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, D-Hoffman Estates, who advocated for the bill and brought the original idea to Cullerton, attended the bill signing. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill during a ceremony at the

Now, with the arrival of mid-August and the approaching start of the school year, summer may feel like it’s already over, but Addison and Bensenville still have plenty of fun activities for families to enjoy before they bid farewell to the season.
1. Rock ‘N’ Wheels
2. Family Bike Ride Local families are invited to enjoy the summer weather with a bike ride at Community Park in Addison. The one-hour family bike ride will be at 3 p.m. Sunday on the Salt Creek Greenway Trail near the sledding hill. The 10-mile ride will be led by riders from the Elmhurst Bike Club at a pace of 10 to 12 mph. No special cycling clothes are needed, but a helmet is required for all riders.
Children younger than 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult older than 19 years old. Registration is required. For information, call 630-2337275 or visit www.addisonparks.org.
3. Music in the Park Downtown Bensenville’s Music in the Park will continue rocking from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Aug. 27. Rick Saucedo will perform a salute to Elvis on Wednesday, and the following week’s concert will feature another tribute to a music great, The Beatles, with a performance by American English. Classic cars also are part of the fun, with Cruise Nights beginning at 6 p.m. both nights. Entry is free. New this year is Bensenville’s Farmers Market, which will run from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Aug. 27. Residents are invited to stock up on the tastes of summer with fresh fruits and vegetables.
4. Pete Seeger at the library Pete Seeger wrote, arranged and popularized many timeless songs throughout his career, including “We Shall Overcome,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and “Turn! Turn! Turn!” His music will be performed in this solo concert from folk-singer Steve Justman from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 in the large meeting room at the Addison Public Library, 4 Friendship Plaza.

ADDISON – It’s been a little more than two years since the Miceli family lost their son and brother Louie to a heroin overdose, and their fight against the drug that took his life is still going strong. The nonprofit the family started in honor of Louie Theodore Miceli – the Addison-based LTM Heroin Awareness and Support Foundation – hosted its second annual Walk-a-Thon and Fun Run on Saturday, raising an estimated $7,000 to continue the organization’s work in educating young adults about the dangers of heroin. “It’s really just bringing awareness specifically to heroin and specifically to the ramifications of using this drug,” said Louie’s sister, Kristen Gutierrez, who regularly presents on behalf of the foundation at schools, churches and other sites around the Chicago area. The LTM Heroin Awareness and Support Foundation has spoken to more than 30,000 young people since it started in October 2012, just a few months after Louie died at 24 years old. The main goal of the organization is to educate teenagers about the dangers of heroin and the repercussions of using it before they end up in a situa-

So far, the foundation has received positive feedback from those who have listened to their presentation. “It’s been really impactful and successful,” Gutierrez said. Part of the presentation includes a testimony from a recovering heroin addict, who speaks to the students. There are only three outcomes that can come from experimenting with heroin, Gutierrez said: committing to recovery, going to prison or dying of an overdose. Those who have died of overdoses were acknowledged at the Walk-a-Thon and Fun Run in Addison through a traveling tombstones display from the Stop Overdose Illinois awareness campaign. The 100 tombstones represent the 100 people who die from drug overdoses every day across the United States. “It is an issue all over the country,” said Cassandra Wingert, director of Wake the Nation in Crystal Lake, an advocacy organization with similar

At 10:55 a.m. Oct. 22, 2013, Bensenville police received a report of an intoxicated driver near Irving and York roads. About 20 minutes later, police spotted a vehicle matching the description, a red 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser, leaving a gas station at York and Green streets.
When an officer attempted to stop Evans for a traffic violation, she refused to pull over, and other officers joined the slow-speed pursuit, according to a Bensenville Police Department news release. Police said Evans stopped at Route 83 and Hillside Drive due to traffic, and a detective tried to open her door, but it was locked. Evans then backed up and swerved toward the detective while maneuvering around stopped cars. She continued to lead po-
lice through Elk Grove Village back to Bensenville, Wood Dale and finally Itasca, where the chase ended in a McDonald’s parking lot at Irving Park Road and Prospect Avenue, the release stated. Evans backed into a squad car and struck another vehicle in an attempt to further evade police before striking a tree, police said. Evans also was ordered to pay $3,873.71 in restitution for damage she caused to both the Bensenville and Elk Grove Village police departments.

Many still love golf, but is footgolf the sport of the future? My column last month dealt with the perfection of the sport of golf: the beauty of the course, the internal competition of hitting the perfect shot and the skill needed to learn how each club works. As it is becoming evident in America, young and old are shunning the game. According to the National Golf Foundation, the game of golf has lost 5 million players COMMUNITY over the last decade. I have VOICE seen this personally as Bruce the once coveted 5 p.m. tee time on Thursday night at Flowers Bensenville’s White Pines Golf Course no longer needs a Links-and-Tees Golf in reservation; you just walk up and play. I know there is skill needed Addison will soon be to play golf, and I have learned offering footgolf played … how to play the game for the with a much larger hole, past 22 years. For me, it serves as incentive to get people to take a walk in a beautiful park setting. At NEDSRA, we are exploring footgolf as a possible program offering for individuals with disabilities. It’s simple enough and provides physical activity for all types of potential participants. I haven’t played it yet, so I have no opinion on the sport, but I think I’d like to try it. You should too.

A fact of life with dog walking I totally agree with the writer who was responding to the La Grange writer complaining about dogs peeing in their yard and how gross it is. People walk dogs. It’s a fact of life. Responsible dog owners do not just dump their dogs in their backyards, they walk them. It’s a form of exercise
for both walker and dog and [it] socializes the dog to the world around them. Dogs who are socialized are less likely to be aggressive. Responsible dog owners also pick up after their dog, but peeing is a different ball of wax. You can’t prevent that and most people in our neighborhood try to steer the dogs to a tree or something in the parkway. But even if they pee on your flowers, it isn’t going to ruin them. Get a life, or a dome, as the reader suggested!

I live in the village of Stickney. Taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted by people in office who are putting their political agendas before the taxpayers. We voted out a tax cheat from office and had a trustee who had to resign because he was collecting a disability from the police department and collecting as a trustee. Now, we have a bigheaded softball president who is a trustee in our village and votes against the mayor of Stickney out of spite. We have a trustee who can’t make a decision on her own to save her life. We also have a trustee who owns a business in town and has voted against our budget. These three trustees are wasting our tax dollars. They should put the citizens of Stickney ahead of their own personal gain. What a shame.

I’m a senior in Lombard. Can someone please explain to me why the Lombard Post Office does not have an automatic door for handicapped people? Villa Park, Elmhurst, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn all have automatic doors. I tried to get in the other day, I dropped my packages – it’s very disconcerting. I was told the building is too old, and they don’t have to have it. I thought all federal offices had to have an automatic door for the handicapped. Can someone please explain why Lombard doesn’t?

WHEATON – The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County may be on the hunt for a new executive director only seven months after hiring the last one. The district’s Board of Commissioners met for several hours Aug. 5 in a closed executive session to discuss the future employment of director Arnie Biondo. After emerging from the session, the commissioners announced he had been placed on paid leave. Both sides are “evaluating employment options,” according to a statement from the district.
Biondo was hired in January to replace Brent Manning, who stepped down in June 2012 due to health and family concerns. When he was hired, the former Carol Stream Park District director said he was looking forward to the opportunity and hoped to expand strategic partnerships across the county and turn the district into a “resource for the residents.” Biondo signed a three-year contract worth $188,000 per year, according to the document. The contract also includes a without cause termination clause. The district said in the statement that further details will be made public in the
next two weeks. District spokeswoman Susan Olafson said the decision now rests with Biondo and that the district won’t release any further information until the matter is resolved, as it is a personnel issue. Biondo’s possible departure comes at a time of transition in district leadership. President D. “Dewey” Pierotti Jr. will retire after the November election and be replaced by Republican commissioner Joseph Cantore, who is running unopposed. Operations across the 60 forest preserves and 25,000 acres of preserve land will continue throughout the process, according to the statement.

Carlos was born on February 10, 1980 in Danville, the son of Jose V. and Maria (Castaneda) Gomez. Carlos graduated from the James Nikki Rowe High School in McAllen, Texas. Carlos proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army until being medically discharged. Carlos was always so full of energy and had such a joyful personality. Everyone that knew him will always remember him as a “fun loving and cool guy”. Carlos was a loving son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, and cousin who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his parents, Jose V. Candy Bishop LOMBARD – A movie theatre, dining venues and auditorium are among the new amenities coming to Beacon Hill Senior Living Community Center in Lombard. The attractions are part of a $15 million, 28,000-squarefoot expansion project. Construction will start in early fall and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2016. “It’s a legacy. This expansion will be here not only for us to enjoy but for future generations at Beacon Hill,” resident Candy Bishop said. “It’ll enhance our lifestyle.” Bishop, 69, has lived at Beacon Hill for four years. She said everyone who lives at the senior center is excited for the expansion. A groundbreaking ceremony was Wednesday at the senior center at 2400 S. Finley Road. Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio, who attended the ceremony, said the expansion also is a safety improvement because it boosts the ability for emergency crews to maneuver better at Beacon Hill. “This is terrific for Lombard,” Giagnorio said. “I always keep telling them, ‘Let’s keep moving and growing,’ and this is another part of it.” Lynn Siler, the 30-year

Siler said she was working at the center when it underwent an expansion in 1988 or 1989, adding 100 more apartments for independent living. “I’ve seen the growth from expansion here prior to this one and it’s done wonders for the community,” Siler said. Siler said the expansion
will keep seniors active with learning labs, exercise rooms, more space for Wii classes and educational programs. “There’s a lot of opportunities coming down the pipe,” she said. “In the end it’s going to be so worth it.” Blaire Goldstein, executive director for Beacon Hill, said the center will take out a debt to pay off the cost of the project. She added a group of 30 to 35 residents at the center were
involved in the pre-planning process for the expansion. “We held meetings for the legacy planning that allowed them to tell us the things they’d like to see on our campus,” Goldstein said. “Through their feedback, we developed the architectural design.” Planning for the expansion started in spring 2012, said Goldstein, who added Lombard’s Village Board approved the project May 1. Beacon Hill houses nearly 500 people, with 110 nursing home beds on campus and 400 seniors residing in independent living. The center also employees 240 full-time employees. The expansion will include a new kitchen and additional storage and will likely create new jobs. The groundbreaking coincides with Beacon Hill’s 30th anniversary, which residents celebrated this week with a picnic, talent show, anniversary dinner and gala event. “I think it means we’re stable just like a home environment,” Siler said. “It shows we lasted 30 years and are moving on to the future.”
County to host hearing about $18.9M in flood recovery funds SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DuPage County will host a public hearing Aug. 26 to gather input on $18.9 million it received earlier this year for disaster recovery after the April 2013 floods, according to a county news release. The money comes from
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, in addition to $7 million the department previously gave the county in response to the same flood event. The hearing on what to do with the funds will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at the DuPage County Administration
Building, 505 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. The action plan for the money can be accessed at www.dupageco.org/cdbg-dr and will be available for public comment through Sept. 10. It includes the allocation of $4.5 million to purchase homes in flood-prone areas,
$3.5 million to assist in the construction of the Klein Creek watershed project at Armstrong Park in Carol Stream and $4.4 million for the West Branch River restoration project. The county anticipates submitting its final plan to the department by Oct. 7.

DMK Burger Bar delivers pure temptation LOMBARD – I’m the kind of person who receives a whole wheel of cheese for Christmas, and it’s gone before the new year. The kind of person you can’t leave unsupervised in a gourmet cheese section for longer than five minutes without having to go back for the full-sized cart. So while the gourmet burgers at DMK Burger Bar are the main attraction, I couldn’t help but note the excellence of the cheese and everything else sitting on top of the beef or bison patties. I met a friend at the Lombard location of the Chicago favorite after work last week, settled onto a bar stool, and immediately wanted pretty much every burger offered. DMK’s menu is deceptively simple at first glance: 14 numbered burgers on the left – no names, just ingredients – and a list of sides and appetizers on the right. Among the 14 are five that don’t use red meat, and are based on fish, turkey or vegetables. The simple concept belies the fact that once you start reading the fine print, the experience turns into abundant choices. Any of the patties, all made from grass-fed beef, can be substituted with bison for $2 extra. Ravenous customers can add a second patty for $3, or an egg to any burger for $1. It was my first visit to DMK, so I didn’t go crazy with the add-ons. The bartender was quick to bring us our beverages – the third word in DMK Burger Bar is taken seriously. The entire back of the menu is full of craft beer drafts and bottles, and a wall chalkboard lists craft cocktails. After considering one of the day’s two specials, a Cajun burger with fried okra, I made an executive decision to put all my stock in the second burger on the menu: beef patty topped with chili-rubbed onion strings, Amish blue cheese and spicy chipotle ketchup. Programs on the move Local schools part of new conference alignments By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Conference realignment has been a buzz topic in college athletics over the past few years, and the Chicago-area high school scene is going through similar changes. The shift is taking place for both public and private schools. Some are moving from long-standing conferences to new territory, both competitively and geographically. Changing to a new conference entails more than just making new schedules and resetting GPS bus routes. Craig Etheridge, boys basketball head coach at Westmont, led the Sentinels from the old Southwest Suburban Conference to the Suburban Prairie Conference to their current place in the Interstate Eight Conference. “It certainly is an adjustment,” Etheridge said. “For me, one of the hardest things was leaving behind all the coaches from the first conference and the working relationships and friendships that go along with competing against each other. The next season, working with a new group of guys, it was different and there definitely was an adjustment period.” With several schools making changes, the conference landscape is going to look much different in the near future.
DVC upheaval One of the leagues that has seen a major alteration is the DuPage Valley Conference, which has been around since 1975. Lake Park came in from the Upstate Eight Conference while West Chicago moved from the DVC to the UEC beginning with the 2013-14 school year. This fall Glenbard East and West Aurora also move from the DVC to the UEC, leaving the league with just six teams. Glenbard East football coach John Walters downplayed any major adjustment in entering a new league. “There’s really no secrets going into Friday night,” Walters said. “We have an idea of what they’re going to do and we have an idea of what we’re going to do.” Because of a lack of available

Metro Suburban mixes it up Another league undergoing an overhaul is the Metro Suburban Conference. Seven schools – IC Catholic, Wheaton Academy, Aurora Central Catholic, St. Edward, Chicago Christian, Walther Christian and Guerin – joined the MSC from the now disbanded Suburban Christian Conference. The MSC, which will have two divisions, becomes the only football conference with both public

This is the first time during that period that RB won’t be in the same conference as Elmwood Park. n If Glenbard East had stayed in the DVC, which now consists of Glenbard North, Lake Park, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South, the Rams would have had to fight history on the football field. The Rams haven’t won a football game against any of those schools since 2003. n This is the second straight year West Chicago will have a new look to its schedule in most sports. The Wildcats joined the Upstate Eight Valley last school year and shift over to the Upstate Eight River starting this fall, where they will face seven new conference foes.

Mixed conferences exist around the state with Boylan Catholic (Rockford), Althoff Catholic (Belleville) and Sacred-Heart Griffin (Springfield) competing against public schools. “I don’t think it changes much,” IC Catholic athletic director Tom Schergen said of switching. “It just changes our schedule and teams we’re playing. From a geography standpoint it changes our schedule. We’re in the West division where everyone is right around us.” In the MSC West, IC will play against former SCC foes ACC and Wheaton Academy along with public schools Riverside Brookfield, Glenbard South and Fenton. This is the first time IC will be in a confer-
ence with public schools, but Schergen noted that IC previously played most of the teams in the MSC in non-conference games so a working relationship already existed. “Maybe it’s possibly the first time we play RB in things, but we’ve played Ridgewood and Elmwood Park before,” Schergen said. “Even the private schools, Illiana and Timothy, we’ve played in things, so it’s not all new to us.” The Knights also get a more extended pairing with Timothy Christian. The two Elmhurst schools already scheduled each other in non-conference games in numerous sports along with being paired together for just about every IHSA postseason regional. RB boys basketball coach Tom McCloskey, who tries to schedule the Bulldogs against top competition regularly, welcomed the new competition. “I think the new conference will be tougher,” McCloskey said. “Some tougher schools with great basketball traditions. It’s just a new situation.” He doesn’t believe playing with more private schools will change the dynamic of the league. “I didn’t think that was a much of a factor at all,” McCloskey said. “Some of the schools, Wheaton Academy and the others, have strong basketball traditions and it’s a priority at their school.”
New-look Catholic league The remaining SCC schools, including Montini and St. Francis, were left looking for a new home. Marian Central Catholic joined the East Suburban Catholic Conference and the rest joined the Chicago Catholic League for just football and boys soccer this year. In 2015, all of the boys sports will be members of the CCL while the girls sports will be joining the GCAC. “To me personally, it is absolute excitement,” St. Francis athletic director Dan Hardwick said about the conference changes over the next two years. “Both of these leagues have been bending over backwards for us, that is the best way to put it. They’ve been so accommodating and they’ve been so excited to get us in their leagues. “It’s going to be a challenge but we are relishing the challenge. That is all part of the excitement.”

ference, which is comprised entirely of private schools. Benet AD Gary Goforth believes the latest proposal stems from the success factor issue. Already competing in the larger classes in the playoffs (7A for football, 4A for softball, basketball and volleyball), the Redwings wouldn’t be greatly affected by the success factor. Goforth didn’t want to talk specifics until reading the proposal, but he believes a complete separation isn’t necessarily the best solution. “If it would force the private and nonboundary schools out of the IHSA, I think that would be a detriment to high school athletics,” he said. “We enjoy playing the public schools around us.”

Coaches’ perspective Tom McCloskey also has been on both sides of the debate, having been a boys basketball coach at Montini (head coach) and Nazareth (assistant) before his current head coaching gig at Riverside Brookfield. “I kind of like to think I was the same coach at Montini and Riverside Brookfield,” he said. “I believe in all the things that we’re doing. My approach has almost been the exact same. It’s basketball. It’s getting kids to love playing and getting a program together. It’s not really much different. “But I do see both sides of it, obviously private schools have an advantage as far as getting kids outside of cer-
tain boundaries.” If the split were to occur, it would drastically change the playoff landscape for local small schools like Lisle and Westmont. Those two schools typically mix with private schools like IC Catholic, Timothy Christian, Aurora Christian, Walther Christian and St. Edward in the postseason. “I’m torn because I get along with all those guys and they have good teams and good programs,” Westmont boys basketball coach Craig Etheridge said of his private school brethren. “Part of me is loyal to the concept of playing the same teams, but I’ve also lost kids to Timothy Christian, Nazareth and Montini. I’m cu-
rious to see how it plays out on both sides.” Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team was knocked out of the playoffs by Benet in 2012. The Raiders and Redwings are typically placed in the same sectional in the playoffs, and this past season Benet won the sectional and went on to play for a state title in Class 4A. “I think when schools that take whoever walks through the door play against schools that are able to recruit a little bit, it’s like comparing apples and oranges,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “That being said, we’ll play anybody anywhere. All that stuff is out of my control. I’m just trying to get our kids ready to play.”

First-year Glenbard South athletic director Tim Carlson has a unique perspective on the issue, having spent 12 years working at private schools, including 10 as an AD at St. Viator and Guerin. “We are certainly right at the beginning stages and we don’t have any of the details,” he said. “But in all honestly, do I think this is the answer to the problem? No. There is something to be said about playing everybody and challenging yourself and playing programs that are strong. It forces you to raise your level of play a little bit.” His biggest concern is what might happen to the Metro Suburban Conference, of which the Raiders are a member, if such a proposal passes. The league is expanding to 14 schools this year and includes both public and private institutions. “From the Metro Suburban Conference perspective, we have a private and public mix,” Carlson said. “Talking with John Treiber (former Glenbard South AD) and talking to some other ADs, what makes the MSC work is we’ve been able to work through issues and do it collaboratively. “If something like this happens, what would it mean for the Metro Suburban? Does it do damage to the conference? It’s a tough sell. We are in a unique position and so much work has been put in by these ADs, certainly not by me, I’m new, but especially John Treiber. I’d hate to see that crumble.” A few other conferences in the state – such as the Central State Eight (with Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin), the Northern Illinois Conference (with Rockford Boylan), the Western Big Six (with Rock Island Alleman) and the South Seven Conference (with Belleville Althoff) – also mix public and nonboundary schools but not to the extent of the MSC.
