ADDISON – Community Park’s Addison Family Aquatic Center could receive $50,000 and one day of celebrity handyman Ty Pennington’s help for a makeover. “We never thought we would even get this far,” said Geri Estvanik, director of operations at the Addison Park District. The Park District’s pool is one of 50 semi-finalists in the Give Back Challenge presented by Guaranteed Rate. Supporters can watch a video about the project and vote at shawurl.com/19dq by July 8. Six finalists will be announced July 15, and a grand prize winner will be chosen Aug. 1. The 35-year-old community pool was destroyed in 2013 due to severe storms after pressure from floodwaters caused it to buckle. “It looked pretty dire,” Estvanik said. The pool not only served the community residents but also public swim teams in the area and Olympic hopefuls, as it is one of very few outdoor 50-meter pools in Illinois, she said. The Addison Frogs Swim and Dive Team were forced to find other means of practicing during their 2013 season while the pool was closed for repairs. When it reopened this summer, the Park District began offering swim lessons in English, Spanish and Polish at the pool. The community also has returned for lessons, pool exercise activities and swim team practices. However, Estvanik explained that although the Park
District managed to repair the pool, the 2013 flooding caused damage to the deck and other areas that have not been repaired or replaced yet. “Some elements that are around the pool are very outdated,” she said. The aquatic center still requires support to make other improvements like painting fences, repairing weather damage and bringing in an A/V specialist to help fix the sound system. “We’re trying to put it back together piece by piece,” Estvanik said. While the pool meets ADA requirements, she said the Park District would like to add portable stairs that would allow senior citizens and people with disabilities better access to the pool. “Teaching people how to swim is a life skill,” Estvanik Celebrate July 4 said. Home sales show decrease from May 2013 Bensenville By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ADDISON – The number of Addison homes sold in May decreased compared to May 2013, as did the median sale price of the homes, according to data provided by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. The report shows that 19 homes sold in May 2014, a 17.4-percent drop from the 23 sold in May 2013. The median price of those homes was $210,000, which
is down 3.7 percent from $218,000 in May 2013, according to the data. Branka Poplonski, of Century 21 Lullo in Addison, said there are a shortage of homes on the market in the area, but she expects to see an increase in the number of Addison homes sold in June 2014. Poplonski also has noticed that multiple offers are being made on homes before they sell in Addison, she said. “People are getting their confidence back,” Poplonski added.
She said she believes the Addison data is comparable to other towns in DuPage County. Bensenville home prices were lower than Addison, but the median price increased from May 2013 to May 2014. The median price of Bensenville homes sold in May 2014 was $187,450, which was up 19.5 percent from $156,875 in May 2013, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors report. The number of homes sold dropped, however. The num-
ber of Bensenville homes sold in May 2014 was down 12.5 percent from 16 in May 2013 to 14 this year. The number of Wood Dale homes sold this May was 10, the same as those sold in May 2013. The median home price increased 7.8 percent from $197,500 in May 2013 to $213,000 in May 2014, according to the data. Poplonski said she expects the market to continue to improve in Addison but hopes to see more homes go on the market to increase inventory.

Using a $108,200 grant, the Bensenville Park District plans to restore a pre-Civil War storage barn and chicken coop at Fischer Farm.
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BENSENVILLE – The Bensenville Park District has been awarded a $108,200 grant for a Fischer Farm facility restoration project. The park district, in cooperation with the DuPage County Forest Preserve District, operates the farm at 16W680 Grand Ave. in Bensenville, according to a park district news release. The grant, announced June 14 by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, was among 47 other grants awarded to Illinois museums. The museums collectively
received $20 million to improve their facilities and develop new exhibits, the release stated. The Bensenville Park District plans to use the $108,200 grant to restore a pre-Civil War storage barn and chicken coop on the Fischer property, which is known to be one of the oldest remaining homesteads in DuPage County, according to the release. The purpose of the restoration is to protect and preserve the site, which is a tangible link to the past and the foundation of the local community, the release stated.

Addison chamber jumps into summer Well, here we are … moving through summer at breakneck speed! Our annual golf outing turned out to be a great day. Golfers were able to get in a full round of golf without being rained on, and thanks to their generosity, we will be adding funds from the prize holes and raffle to our scholarship fund. Now, we look ahead to upcoming events for the rest of summer and into autumn – the Addison Chamber of Commerce & Industry doesn’t take a vacation. July 23 is Chamber of COMMUNITY Commerce Day at the DuPage VOICE County Fair. We will be joinBernadette ing other area chambers of LaRocca commerce at a morning networking event, and following the 11 a.m. Flag-Raising Ceremony, some chamber representatives will greet attendees at the fair. On July 24, we will host a multi-chamber luncheon meeting at the Addison Hilton Garden Inn, with a panel of speakers from Adventist GlenOaks, Alexian Brothers and Edward/Elmhurst Hospitals, who will discuss changes in the health and wellness industry and its relationship to employers and their employees. Our August luncheon meeting will again be a multi-chamber event to be held at Alta Villa Banquets on Aug. 28, when Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth will be our keynote speaker. Reservations are required for all of our luncheon meetings to allow us to make appropriate arrangements with the venues to assure adequate seating. Our luncheon costs $25 per person for chamber members and $30 per person for non-members. As we progress through these next months, families will be getting ready to send children back to school, and we hope that as they shop for clothes and school supplies, they will make as many purchases as possible from our local small business facilities. Not only are they convenient, but when purchases are made in Addison, sales tax dollars stay right here in Addison, and at the same time, it helps our local stores to stay in business and employ area citizens. We have a lot of new and exciting meetings and events planned for the rest of the year, and we will be offering more information soon. Anti-heroin coalition talks expansion, education By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The DuPage Coalition Against Heroin soon will seek county funding to expand its efforts in both the classrooms and the medicine cabinets of its residents. The coalition, led by representatives of several county government entities, met June 24 at the county’s administration center in Wheaton to discuss the future of two major initiatives: $67,746 in anti-heroin education for schools across the county and prescription drop-off boxes. Although the three-year trial program requires adoption by the Judicial and Public Safety Committee before going to the county board, the coalition hopes to find 12 partner schools across the county’s six districts – one middle school and one high school in each. The Robert Crown Center, which specializes in childhood health education, would partner with the coalition to educate students about the dangers of heroin. From there, the number could increase to as many as 61 middle and high schools as soon as the next school year, reaching up to 23,000 students,

County Coroner Richard Jorgensen compared the slow rollout to the approach the county took earlier this year introducing its Narcan program, training a few represen-
tatives from area police departments to use the medicine, which counteracts the effects of an opiate overdose. “We couldn’t go to every police officer in DuPage County and train them safely, and to implement this in a huge fashion is impossible and probably wouldn’t work,” he said. Should the county adopt the measure, it would fund the first year of the program for the original 12 schools. Then, it would pay for half the costs the next year and the entirety of the first full year of whichever schools join the program – an estimated $156,793. The third year, the first 12 schools would absorb the full cost and the county would fund half the cost of the next 61 schools. DuPage County Public Information Officer Johnna Kelly said the Judicial and Public Safety Committee will meet to

discuss the idea, and the coalition hopes to bring it before the board this month. The coalition also spoke about expanding its RxBOX program by partnering with the city of Naperville. The program provides police departments with drop-off boxes for medications no longer being used and is designed to restrict access for those who could abuse the medicine while offering an alternative to throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet, which can have environmental consequences. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is not looking to expand the program’s grant funding and is holds the contract for the waste management service. To expand, the coalition hopes to partner with Naperville, which has a household hazardous waste program and recently received money to grow its waste facility and drop-box locations. Representatives from the DuPage County Health Department are suggesting the county work with the city to encourage other municipalities to deliver collected materials to its disposal facilities. Kelly said county officials already have reached out to the city about the partnership.
Grand jury indicts Itasca woman for stealing, fraud By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com ITASCA – An Itasca woman is charged with five felony counts after allegedly stealing more than $600,000 from her employer during a period of five years, said Randall Samborn, U.S. Attorney’s Office Northern District of Illinois spokesman. Geena Cepek was indicted June 26 by a federal grand jury, Samborn said. She is charged with two counts of mail fraud, two counts of interstate transportation of stolen funds and one count of credit card fraud. Cepek worked as an office manager and bookkeeper for an unnamed Itasca company from June 2006 to June 2011, when the alleged incidents took place, according to the indictment. During that time period, she reportedly fraudulently issued about 144 company checks totaling more than $474,205 to herself, her creditors and other entities, the indictment stated. Cepek also allegedly falsified company records. Additionally, she reportedly used company credit cards to buy shoes, clothes, fragrances, sunglasses and a purse, according to the indictment, before allegedly having statements mailed to her home and fraudulently issuing company checks to pay off the charges. All counts carry a maximum fine of $250,000, Samborn said. Maximum sentences on the counts range as high as 20 years in prison. Cepek also must pay restitution on the allegedly stolen funds, Samborn said. She was scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court this week for arraignment.

Cooper’s Corner stakes claim on big flavor WINFIELD – When friends recommended Cooper’s Corner, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant that opened earlier this year in the spot that once housed the venerable Viking. We walked in on a Friday night to the sound of live music and were offered a choice of seating in the expansive lounge near the band or one of the dining rooms. We opted for the dining room closest to the bar for a happy medium. The space is updated, yet preserves classic old-school steakhouse charm with large booths, banquettes, tables with comfy chairs and lots of elbow room. And while the chef puts plenty of emphasis on roast beef, steak and other red meat dishes, there’s a healthy accent on seafood, pastas, freshly prepared crab cakes, sandwiches and other options that make the decision of what to order pleasurably conflicted. We opted to try the stuffed sesame portabella appetizer, which complemented the meaty mushroom with goat cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper that popped. “It’s an interesting blend of flavors and textures,” raved my date. We each chose soup over salad: a creamy clam chowder and a baked onion. The latter was good, but a tad salty. My selection of an entree became easy when I spotted the slow-roasted prime rib featured at the top of the menu, and chose the smallest of the three portion choices. It arrived rare per my request, and was sublimely tender and juicy. Its side dish was a superb mix of sauteed zucchini, broccoli, carrot, squash and onion cooked al dente. My companion chose one of the evening’s specials: the baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin. The fruit topping made it a memorable dish. A massive portion, we enjoyed it for lunch the next day.

We did not leave enough room for one of the homemade desserts suggested by a friend, whose comment about the grilled shrimp entree she enjoyed on a previous visit was an enthusiastic “Yummy.” We second the sentiment. Cooper’s Corner, with its large parking lot, is easy to find on Roosevelt Road on the border between Winfield and
Wheaton, and well worth a trip for a relaxing experience, deliciously fresh ingredients, friendly service and the added option of hitting the dance floor Fridays and Saturdays. The weekend acts range from blues and R&B to jazz and Rat Pack favorites. The lounge also is home to a piano bar with a vocalist Thursdays, and every other Thursday, Cooper’s Corner

AT football steps up summer competition By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The school year is out and many students are enjoying summer break. Addison Trail’s football team is spending the summer getting ready for the season. This summer, AT coach Paul Parpet Jr. sent the Blazers to compete in the 32-team Red Grange Classic at Wheaton Warrenville South. The 7-on-7 tournament features a competitive atmosphere, something that isn’t that easy to find in the summer. The Blazers went 2-3 in pool play on June 26 with wins against Schaumburg and Metea Valley. In bracket play the following day, the Blazers beat Niles West and Bartlett and lost to host Wheaton Warrenville South and Desoto Central (Miss.). “We did how I anticipated with the skill kids that we got coming back,” Parpet said. “I think we competed at a very high level and did some nice things. I think when it’s all said and done we need to remember the five most important guys [the linemen] weren’t there. If we can get four seconds to throw every time we can be dangerous.” Without linemen, quarterbacks are forced to throw within four seconds at 7-on-7 events. Mike Rybarczyk was able to hit receivers Jaavion Bradley and Jake Atiyeh regularly. Atiyeh especially impressed Parpet. “I know he’s a competitor and I know he’s a gamer, but he had some phenomenal catches,” Parpet said of Atiyeh. Playing in a competitive environment for a 7-on-7 was something new for the Blazers. The level of competition stood out as the 32 teams in the field combined for 10 state titles and 14 title game appearances since 2010. “I think there was a lot of positives to it, but I can see a lot of negatives to it if you can’t compete at that level because there’s a lot of good football teams there,” Parpet

“They needed some type of competition. I thought it came at the right time.” Paul Parpet Jr. Addison Trail coach said. “I think it was exactly what our players needed. They needed some type of competition. I thought it came at the right time.” On the defensive side, the Blazers had a younger unit, but overall it was clear that team speed, which plays a huge factor in 7-on-7 football, is a strength for AT. “We definitely were a lot faster,” Parpet said. “Our overall team speed is above average. That’s probably the thing in the first two weeks of summer camp and the two days at Wheaton Warrenville that stood our for our team. That’s what we need.” The speed and skill of senior returners Bradley and Atiyeh will be key for AT, but Parpet is also focused on getting the team to play well in the trenches. He complimented the progress of his offensive linemen through summer practices and also emphasized the importance of being able to run the ball well so defenses can’t focus on shutting down the receiving corps like last season. “Those five guys we have on offense and those guys we have on the defensive line are going to make or break our season,” Parpet said. “We’re emphasizing our run game.” The Blazers return to 7-on-7 action next Thursday when they host the West Suburban ConferErica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com ence 7-on-7. However, Toni Kukoc earned his own spot in Bulls’ lore in 1994 when he hit a buzzer-beater to defeat the New York Knicks in a playoff game. That was near the end of the his rookie season, after which he went on to play in Chicago until the 1999-2000 season. Kukoc officially retired from professional basketball in 2006, but he was back on the court this past week hosting and coaching a camp at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle. He took time from working with camp participants to speak with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the camp, his retirement, his native Croatia’s involvement in the World Cup, and his famous last-second shot. Rossi: What has kept you busy in retirement? Kukoc: Not much. Play a

little golf and watching basketball. That’s pretty much it. Life is perfect. I became like a golf addict, so as long as the weather is nice I can go and golf. Rossi: What are your thoughts on the camp? Kukoc: It’s a fun time for the kids. We’re trying to work on fundamentals of the game and teaching them to play the right way and have fun while doing it. Rossi: What’s the biggest fundamental you try and get across to the kids? Kukoc: There’s a theme [to
the camp] and it’s listening. Just listening to the coaches and trying to put all that we say back onto the court. It’s easy to forget after five minutes what the coach said and just do it the easy way or do it your own way, but we’re trying to get them to listen to the little details we put in their ears and get them to put it back on the court. Rossi: What was it like playing for the Bulls when they were at their peak? Kukoc: I don’t want to say it was easy; it was hard, but at the same time it was a lot of fun just for the fact that the expectations were high and the ultimate goal of winning a championship was the only goal. Everything else was a failure. It was a high standard, but it wasn’t something where the goal was put so high that it wasn’t reachable. So we came to the first day of camp with the idea that if we played together and put our minds in the same place that our goal was achievable,
and it was, three times. Rossi: What do you miss most about playing? Kukoc: The competitive nature of it that we all had. In golf, the U.S. Open or the World Cup in soccer, you see how much the guys want it, how much they grind for it, how much the fans are into it and that’s when that competitive spirit of mine shows up and boils inside of me again. Then reality hits you, and when I try to overdo it, the body says ‘No, I don’t really think so.’ It brings you back to Earth, but that’s the part you miss the most. The games you won by 20 or 30 you don’t remember, but those last-second shots or the last-second defensive stops, those are the ones you remember and the ones people remind you about. Rossi: Is that last-second shot against the Knicks your career highlight? Or is there something else you think back on? Kukoc: I hit more than a couple [shots like that], but
I’d say championships are more the measurement of your success as a basketball player. So all the championships, with all the stuff I did in Europe at first and then in the United States, are kind of the highlights. The individual stuff is always there, but it doesn’t mean as much if nothing happens team-wise. The shots you hit are great, but championships are what measures somebody’s success. Rossi: Have you been watching much of the World Cup? Kukoc: I’ve watched a lot of it. I watched Croatia, that’s my team. I watched the United States because that’s my team, too. Obviously I’m happy the States advanced and a little disappointed Croatia didn’t. Rossi: Do you ever get together with your former teammates and play some basketball? Kukoc: No, but every once in a while we play golf and we enjoy the competitive nature that way.
