The event has gained such a reputation that Addison Trail freshman Renalda Trebicka was looking forward to her first Spectacular. “My friends told me,” Trebicka said. D’Ambrose said her students start talking about it each year as early as fall. “My kids, who I teach, can’t wait for it,” D’Ambrose said. While Trebicka and Rodriguez were both anxious to show off their basketball skills during the four-on-four tournament, D’Ambrose was happy to offer other opportunities for students to participate in the day’s events. “We have so many different-level kids, I wanted to do an event that would appeal to more levels and get everyone involved in some way,” D’Ambrose said.

ADDISON – Smiles, music and plenty of cheering filled Addison Trail High School’s field house and spilled out into the sunshine for the West Suburban Conference Special Needs Sports Spectacular on Tuesday. “I wanted to make sure that our event had something for everybody here,” said Addison Trail physical education teacher Sheri D’Ambrose, who has been coordinating the event for the past four years. The Sports Spectacular began in 1994, as a track and field competition for students with special needs, but when D’Ambrose took the reigns in 2011, she made fun her first priority. Students raced, played basketball and tossed softballs Tuesday, but they also took advantage of three bouncy houses and other games. Senior Johnny Rodriguez said he’d been running at home in preparation for the day, but

the athletics weren’t the only attraction for him. “I love pizza,” he said. In addition to the 12 local pizzerias that donated lunch for the 450 students and 100 volunteers at the event, students could refuel after their competitions with cotton candy, popcorn or snow cones. D’Ambrose couldn’t wait for her newest addition to the Sports Spectacular, karaoke. She got the idea last year during the closing dance party while she was singing along in a microphone. Students kept grabbing for a chance to sing into her mic. “I thought, ‘Hey, they want to sing. Why not do karaoke?’ ” D’Ambrose said. Addison Trail juniors training to be senior P.E. leaders next year helped keep the students from 13 schools in the West Suburban Conference organized and make sure everyone got a turn. In the past, D’Ambrose said the events were timed and scored, but the event has since moved away from that com-

AT names student leader, musician 88’s Best for April SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – Morgan Pirtle has been named as Addison Trail High School’s April recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her accomplishments in the performing arts and more. Pirtle, a senior, was recognized during the April 28 District 88 Board of Education meeting, according to a district newsletter. Pirtle has taken a myriad of courses offered at the school, including nine Advanced Placement/college-level courses, 12 honors classes and extensive coursework completed in the music department. Her involvement in electives includes Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Ensemble Honors, Jazz Band, Shades of Blue, Treble Choir Honors, orchestra and Introduction to Theater Arts. She also is class president and Student Council president and

she is a member of Addison Trail’s National Honor Society and countless other groups and organizations, the newsletter stated. Pirtle has been heavily involved in Addison Trail shows. She has performed in every fall, winter and spring play all four years of her high school career, with leading roles in most. Pirtle also has performed in every variety show and one acts show and two improv shows and she has participated in the school’s 24-Hour Theatre Challenge, according to the newsletter. She has received numerous awards and has been invited to multiple state and national competitions and workshops for the performing arts. This year, Pirtle was the first Addison Trail student to win an award for song composition through the Illinois Music Education Association. Her song

“Pushin’” recently received third place in the association’s Composition Contest in the Jazz Vocal/Instrumental category, the newsletter stated. Along with her award, Pirtle also was named a National YoungArts Foundation Honorable Mention Winner in Jazz Voice. In receiving that award, Pirtle was invited to perform in a week-long workshop in March at the National YoungArts Foundation program in Los Angeles with about 100 other nominees. In the newsletter, Pirtle said music is her entire life, and it is what drives her and fuels her soul. Her mother, a professional clarinetist, has helped shape her passion for music and the arts. Pirtle’s future plans include attending the University of Illinois at Chicago in the school’s jazz studies program, where she plans to continue singing and composing.

ADDISON – During the April 28 District 88 Board of Education meeting, the 15 Addison Trail High School students who participated in the Addison-Triggiano Sister Cities student exchange program shared with the board their experiences and highlights of the trip. Students enrolled in Italian 3 honors, 4 honors or advanced placement /college-level classes were eligible to apply. The application process included writing an essay and completing an interview in English and Italian. GPA, attendance, behavior and character/leadership also were taken into consideration. Along with traveling to Italy, chosen students and families had to commit to hosting a student from Il Cartesio High School in Italy in October 2013. The Addison Sister Cities Committee has partnered with District 88 in support of this exchange program.

Addison Trail liaison officer promoted to sergeant with PD SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – For the past four years, Tony Reda has been a familiar face in the halls at Addison Trail High School. He has served as the school’s community liaison police officer since May 2010 and was promoted Monday to the position of sergeant with the Addison Police Department, according to a District

88 newsletter. On April 28, Addison Trail and the Addison Police Department congratulated Reda on his new role. Addison Trail Principal Adam Cibulka and the administrative staff at the school and District 88 thanked Reda for his years of service to Addison Trail, the newsletter stated. “This promotion is based on [Reda’s] positive work his-

tory, self-initiative and obvious desire for career development,” Addison Director of Police Bill Hayden said in the newsletter. Hayden and Cibulka said the process of filling Reda’s position at Addison Trail will begin in early May, and Reda will continue his duties at Addison Trail until the end of the school year, according to the newsletter.

The Addison Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently recognized the top 30 seniors from Addison Trail High School for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments by hosting a Student Honors Banquet. It’s great to see the community support the success of its young people. Congratulations, Class of 2014! On April 24, the Addison community spent hours testifying in front of the Bipartisan Task Force on the Heroin Crisis at the request of state Rep. Dennis Reboletti. During a four-hour hearing at Addison Village Hall, speakers representing all sides of the issue from law enforcement to treatment centers shared their perspectives on the heroin epidemic. Responding to Westmont’s brush pick-up costs I’m calling concerning the article in the Suburban Life concerning Westmont’s new brush-pickup program. I was quite surprised to see this and actually disappointed in the town of Westmont. I do know that they just purchased last year a brand new chipper and a brand new chipper truck specifically for picking up brush in the village itself, which residents pay for. Also, what it doesn’t mention in the article that I’m very concerned about; if waste management is picking up brush on a basis that coincides with garbage pickup, who’s paying the additional bill for this service, which Westmont is eliminating by doing themselves? I’m sure we’re going to have another increase in our garbage pickup fee, and it’s not listed here. I am very concerned. I believe what should happen is only those who have brush pickup should have to purchase a sticker or something at the village and pay for it so that we don’t all have to share its cost, which we cannot afford. Also, there are much stricter guidelines as to how the brush has to be put out. I’m concerned that some of the elderly people aren’t able to accommodate this requirement.

Glen Ellyn should better control spending The village of Glen Ellyn announced there will be at $1.4 million shortfall in its budget. In the same breath, it approved the hiring of consultants to mock up new signage. With a deficit budget, the board decided to move forward with more spending. It’s always more surveys, more studies, more consulting fees on frivolous ideas with Glen Ellyn.

According to the Suburban Life, if the Downers Grove Village Council approves the new backyard chickens ordinance, the new setback for chicken coops will only be 7 feet from property lines instead of the current 50-foot requirement. All neighbors would also have to give an OK and the $84 dollar permit would last five years before all neighbors would have to consent again. I feel few neighbors want to disagree, regardless of their desire for farm animals next door. The winners here will be foxes, raccoons and fence contractors, once chickens can be kept in virtually any neighborhood in the village. Expect that lots of high fences will be built and tight-lipped neighbors and Realtors will be torn between full disclosure and mums the word.

Sex abuse documents name priests with Bensenville ties By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com Thousands of pages of documents released April 30 by a Chicago law firm detail decades of sexual abuse by DuPage County priests, including three priests who worked at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Bensenville, and the protection they allegedly received from the Diocese of Joliet. The files of 16 priests accused of abuse, long held confidential by the diocese, were obtained and released by Jeff Anderson and Associates to coincide with five new lawsuits filed by the firm against four offenders. Priests named in the diocesan documents include the Rev. Anthony Ross, who worked as pastor at St. Charles Borromeo from 1990 until 1993; the Rev. Michael Gibbney, who worked as associate pastor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Bensenville from 1980 until 1986 and associate pastor at St. Charles Borromeo Parish from 1986 until 1988;

James Burnett, who worked as an associate at St. Charles Borromeo Parish from 1968 until 1974. Ross was accused of sexually abusing a minor in 1981 or 1982, according to documents. He was later put on a leave of absence from St. Charles Borromeo in 1993, after the victim said he would forego litigation if Ross were removed from ministry, documents state. Gibbney is accused of sexually abusing at least 11 victims, according to documents. He was laicized in 2010 to marry and lives in Oak Forest, documents state. Among other allegations of abuse, Burnett was accused of sexually abusing a boy during his time at St. Charles Borro-

meo, according to documents. The boy was 9 to 12 years old when Burnett allegedly abused him. The diocesan documents released by the law firm show a pattern of secrecy from Joliet diocese bishops, who regularly failed to remove or report priests accused of child sexual abuse, instead moving them to new parishes where they would often repeat the behavior. The suits brought by the firm seek an unspecified settlement for damages suffered by victims in the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s. They also seek a court order that “[stops] practices that imperil children and requires them to come clean and publicly disclose files of all [priests accused of abuse],” Anderson said May 1. The recently released files are a portion of 34 sought by the firm, he said. “We’re working very hard with the survivors to reveal the past so it’s not repeated,” Anderson said. “The diocese and the bishops have a long history of concealing the past

and their role in the crimes committed by the clerics. “It’s classic tension between those who want to reveal the painful truth and those who want to hide it.” Diocese spokesman Ed Flavin said that, in accordance with common business practice, the diocese does not release confidential files of employees, and the 16 files turned over to the firm were done so under court order. “We do, however, share any and all information which is relevant to an ongoing investigation with law enforcement or as instructed to do so by the court,” Flavin said. “We make available any and all credible allegations of priests on our website.” The priests cited in the lawsuit are the Rev. Leonardo Mateo, the Rev. Lee Ryan, the Rev. Lowell Fischer and the Rev. Frederick Lenczyzki. In a statement, the Diocese of Joliet said it had not yet been served with the five lawsuits filed in Will County, and would “respond in an appro-

priate forum” once it reviewed the specifics of the pleadings. “Anyone who may have been sexually abused as a minor by a member of the clergy, employee or volunteer of the diocese is urged to report the abuse to civil authorities and to the diocese,” the statement read. “Reports may be made to any pastor or by contacting the diocese’s director for the Office of Child and Youth Protection at 815-221-6116. “Dealing with the tragic history of child abuse is part of the Church’s ministry today. The people of the Diocese of Joliet pray every day for those who have been abused and for those responsible for it. They ask the Lord for healing for all His people who suffer for what has happened in their midst. Investigation leads to sentencing in homicide Manhunt targets Itasca man By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A man found guilty of drug-induced homicide after supplying heroin to an acquaintance of a Wheaton man who later died of an overdose was sentenced Monday to 10 Malcolm years in the Brown Illinois Department of Corrections, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Malcolm Brown, 26, of Chicago was found guilty March 24 in the July 28, 2011, death of Wheaton resident Stephen Briston. Brown supplied the heroin the previous day, according to the release. The investigation into Briston’s death was led by the Carol Stream Police Department. “Over the past several years, we have seen an alarming increase in heroin use and heroin-related deaths,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “Last year alone, DuPage County suffered 46 heroin-related deaths. The sad truth is

that these tragic deaths are 100-percent avoidable.” Since his arrest, Brown has remained in custody on a $5 million bail. He will be required to serve 75 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, the release stated. “People have got to realize that heroin is an incredibly dangerous drug that can kill an otherwise healthy person with just one use,” Berlin said. “Judge [Blanche] Hill Fawell’s sentence sends the message that if you deal drugs in DuPage County, you will be held accountable.”

The latest in DuPage County’s efforts to consolidate services is now officially underway and could have long-term effects for the county’s fire departments as early as this year. County Board member Gary Grasso presented a concept four years in the making, calling for a voluntary, regional fire organization to pool services and cut costs during the county’s Judicial and Public Safety Commission meeting Tuesday morning. “The good news is that society and the fire departments and districts have somewhat put themselves out of business,” Grasso said. “The incidents of bad fires is very low, principally in DuPage County. Could a catastrophe happen any day at any time? Absolutely, and we have to be prepared for that. But the day-to-day fire service is driven by (emergency medical response).” Should the plan, or some iteration of it, be adopted by area fire chiefs, it would create a quadrant system split by Interstate 355 and Interstate 88. Each quadrant would be led by an autonomous board of fire chiefs and contain a major hospital. The boards would work to share and streamline services, buy equipment and standardize practices as much as possible. They, in turn, would be overseen by another executive board, which would facilitate further countywide cooperation. Grasso pointed to the West Suburban Fire/Rescue Alliance, which includes Wheaton, Winfield, West Chicago, Carol Stream and Bloomingdale, as an example. He said he and fellow board member and committee Chairman Grant Eckhoff had been working with local fire chiefs,

firefighter’s unions and mayors to ensure their plan was as amenable to major stakeholders as possible before moving forward. Originally, Eckhoff said, he hoped to consolidate all the fire departments under one entity but received pushback on the idea. Should the plan get full buyin, it could offset the rising cost of pensions, equipment and other expenses, Grasso said, and could even lead to the unified fire district originally sought. “The whole thing is driven by economics,” Eckhoff said. “We’re trying to get ahead of the curve and present an opportunity for people to come together to save costs.” The next step of the process is sitting down with stakeholders to begin discussing the project in greater detail. Its success will only go as far as the departments are willing to take it, Grasso said. “We’ve always taken the position from day one until today and going forward after today that this is going to be driven by the professionals and by the chiefs,” he said. “Not by the politicians, not by the mayors, not by the County Board ... this project will not be successful unless chiefs and rank and file eventually get behind it.” Elmhurst Assistant City Manager Mike Kopp, who is the city’s former fire department chief, said there is a lot of cooperation and shared practices between entities currently but more would be better. He asked the County Board members present Tuesday to reach out to their local fire departments to pitch the idea. “I’ve talked to a number of fire chiefs, and it’s hard to argue the fact that we could become better fire departments,” Kopp said. “If we’re all working from the same sheet of music, it’s going to be a lot better.”

ELMHURST – At 12 years old, Molly Wiesman of Elmhurst wanted a chance at the spotlight. Sixteen years of performances later, Wiesman is being honored for her disability advocacy. “For most people with disabilities, you’re in the chorus,” said Wiesman, who has cerebral palsy, a movement disorder, and Marfan syndrome, which affects her heart. Wiesman teamed up with Tellin’ Tales Theatre founder Tekki Lomnicki for the company’s mentor program Six Stories Up. “That was a big deal because I got to write and say lines,” Wiesman said. Tellin’ Tales Theatre is dedicated to giving people with and without disabilities the opportunity to tell compelling stories on stage. The theater has chosen to honor Wiesman with the first TaleBlazer Award at the second annual Fashion Forward benefit. The fashion show and gala features models with and without disabilities in custom-made attire by local designers. “We decided to give the award to two people. One with a disability and one without a disability,” Lomnicki said. Simone LaPierre also will be honored with the TaleBlazer Award. Lomnicki said LaPierre and Wiesman demonstrate the theatre’s mission to break down barriers between those with and without disabilities. “I feel that it’s important to mix both worlds because we learn from each other,” Lomnicki said. Beyond their collaboration on a 10-minute performance, Wiesman said Lomnicki helped her when she transitioned from Acacia Academy in La Grange, where she went to middle school, to York High School. “I had a really rough time in elementary school,” Wiesman said. She remembered kids would ask why she talked

She developed self-confidence issues, but Lomnicki said that’s not unique. “I may have a self-esteem issue because I have a disability, whereas a person without a disability may have a self-esteem issue about something totally different,” said Lomnicki, a little person. As a high schooler, Lomnicki convinced Les Zunkel, now a member of the theatre’s board of directors, that she deserved a spot on stage when Zunkel was casting a York performance four decades ago. During his 36-year career at York, teaching speech, leading the drama department and even serving as assistant principal, Zunkel met Wiesman and many of her family members before her.

“Knowing the mission of Tekki’s Tellin Tales Theatre it was sort of a match made in heaven,” said Zunkel of introducing Wiesman to Lomnicki. He praised Wiesman’s writing skills as did Lomnicki, but the 28-year-old also loves to talk. Wiesman spent the last year as a Best Buddies International Ambassador giving presentations to students of all ages on not using the word “retarded.” “You’re much more than what you look like or how you talk or how you walk,” Wiesman said. Aside from volunteering with the theatre’s marketing committee, Wiesman is also an Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region associate board member. She received services at East Seals while she was young and began volunteering summers when she was home from Loras College and continued after graduation. Wiesman believes society has made progress in the way it includes people with disabilities, but there is still a long way to go. Lomnicki hopes that this year’s focus on young people at the fashion show will further disability advocacy. “I think the reason that we formed Tellin’ Tales was to share our stories and create a commonality to show that we’re different, but we’re alike,” Lomnicki said.

Paisans pleases with more than pizza BERWYN – Walking past a colorful case of freshly made gelato on my way to the host stand at Paisans in Berwyn, I contemplated skipping lunch completely and ordering the largest bowl of Oreo cheesecake flavor I could dig a spoon into. Thankfully, our waiter suggested trying any of the gourmet burgers on the menu before diving into dessert, so I didn’t fill my stomach completely with the chocolate temptation. As my companion and I poured over pages of the menu narrowing down our meal options in an oversized booth, I couldn’t help but look around the industrial-chic restaurant. Modern and welcoming, it offers a variety of spacious seating areas. Brick and steel frame the high-ceilinged space, where scattered tanks of live fish add organic kinetic art to the high-octane vibe. I felt comfortable in my jeans and T-shirt, but so did the sundress-sporting baby shower guests in an event area across the way. As if I weren’t impressed enough before even tasting a bite, our waiter offered to put the White Sox game on a few of the flat screens that hover from the ceiling. This was definitely my kind of place. Fear not northsiders, when another patron asked to see the Cubbies, a few other

By that time, I was digging into our sampler appetizer and hardly noticed. We couldn’t decide, so we settled on a little of everything. The Paisans Sampler of calamari, Pete’s bone-in mild wings, potato skins, fried mushrooms, onion rings and pizza bread didn’t last long. I stopped myself a couple wings and about half a potato skin short of full to save room for the burger I’d ordered at our

waiter’s suggestion. When he brought it over on a wooden cutting board accompanied by a fry-filled tin can and pickle, I was thankful to still have an appetite. I had selected The Ogden Avenue, in which Paisans piles a half-pound patty with barbecue pulled pork, cheddar cheese, pickles and crispy onion strings on a pretzel bun. And yes, it was just as delicious as it sounds. My carnivorous companion

insisted he try the hand-tossed pizza, and ordered his own 12-inch pie topped with pepperoni, bacon and sausage. Although I might have switched one of the meats for a veggie, I happily helped myself to a piece. The pan style crust and sauce held their own even with all the toppings, and convinced me that three meats may not be too many for a Paisans pizza, the family business’ longtime specialty. I don’t regret my Ogden

Avenue choice one bit, but when I go back, there’s a plate of homemade linguine arrabiata begging me to try its garlic, crushed red pepper, basil, plum tomatoes and white wine sauce. Since I’d already thrown my ideas about Paisans being strictly an Italian place out the window when I bit into that pretzel bun, I’m tempted to order the kicked-up nachos as an appetizer. Featuring a full bar, the restaurant also tempts with salads, ribs, steak, sandwiches, classic Italian entrees and inhouse treats by the pastry chef. Finally, it really was time for dessert. Even though the cooler of gelato had me salivating the moment we walked in, I couldn’t deny myself the funnel cake, which was wonderfully decadent. I’ll use the gelato as a sweet excuse to return soon. Paisans offers free valet parking Thursday through Sunday evenings, an especially convenient perk. It also has locations in Brookfield and Cicero.

Addison Trail, and more specifically pitcher Joe Kurucar, was on the winning end of two 1-0 scores in West Suburban Gold games. Kurucar first held Hinsdale South scoreless on April 30, salvaging the rescheduled finale of a three-game series. In that game, the Blazers turned three hits into the game’s lone run when Zack Dowz tripled and Jaime Valdez hit a sacrifice fly to score him in the fourth inning.

She is hitting over .300 and has been especially hot lately with three home runs, including a grand slam against Richards and a walk-off home run against Oak Park-River Forest, in the Dukes’ last seven games. Mehring, this week’s Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about her breakout season and the recent power surge.

Do you feel like you’re all the way back from your tendinitis from last year? As normal as I think I could be, coming back from

all that. I think I’m in a better mental state this year than I have been in the past, so I think I’m going up with a clearer mind and I’ve been able to use that to my advantage.

Does it feel different being a bigger part of the team this season? It’s a lot more fun to know that I’m a part of it. Just coming back from last year and being able to use that and help the kids that came up this year and get them excited.

Have you ever had a walk off home run before? No. That was even more of a highlight for me than the grand slam just to know that I was able to help my team with that one and get us out of that tough situation.

The senior right-hander has been a key reliever his senior year with Webster University. He is in third on the team with 13 appearances and has a 3.57 ERA in 22 2/3 innings pitched. Buchanan has also earned some time at the plate, going 8-for-32 with eight RBIs.

Head to your local discount store and purchase some simple yard games to keep them entertained such as bean bag tosses and sidewalk art. make cleanup a breeze: Be sure to have napkins handy. To help cut down on traic in the house, set up buckets of water in the yard with soap for a quick cleanup. ou might need to go back to your great-grandfather to hear stories about the plate of food that saved the nation. The Blue Plate Special is nearly long gone, as are the street-corner diners that slopped them by the millions. During the Great Depression, simple Blue Plates were the cheapest hot meals, costing a nickel to a dime. They fed the cash-starved nation, sold all day and into the late night. If you had the coin, you could eat heartily, as Blue Plates were healthy by today’s standards. Food historian Kevin Reed traces the name to a dish manufacturer who turned out cheap dinner plates with three segments, similar to a frozendinner tray. All were blue, as that was cheapest color. The three segments held the three elements of all Blue Plates: Meat, vegetables and potatoes. The plates made their way into nearly all of the nation’s 10,000 diners. Reed said the dish segments saved money on

dish washing — no need for multiple plates. “By 1937, one million people were eating at least one meal a day in diners,” he said, and they ordered the most food for the money, Blue Plates. The name does not describe a speciic recipe. Blue Plates changed daily, like today’s specials. They always were made from cheap foods, such as ground beef, potatoes, gravies and canned goods. Mixed vegetables (corn, carrots and peas) were a must. The recipes were designed for mass production, made ahead and taking only minutes to reheat, or they parked in cauldrons on the stove. Food-culture observers Jane and Michael Stern traced the modern versions in their 2001 “Blue Plate Specials and Blue Ribbon Chefs.” Their cross-country marathon stopping at every diner along the way revealed Blue Plates are alive in small, cozy eateries stuck in the 1930s. “They still are the heart and soul of America,” they concluded. For many, all that is left is some Disneyesque diner wannabe in a barren strip mall.” Just don’t expect to ind the specials at McDonald’s, and the prices are more like $6.95 and up. Denny’s and Bob Evans still take a stab at them. You can recreate the classic Blues at home. The recipes were hoarded from the 1930s. They still are cheap, but you can hardly get the glass of water for a nickel. These below are the main courses. Be sure to add canned mixed vegetables in the alley (side dish) and perhaps a rack (biscuit) if you’re in the mood.

Brown meat and onions in oil. Drain. Mix brown gravy in the same pan. Add beef and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.

Brush ﬁllets with butter, coat with bread crumbs. Carefully fry in butter until slightly brown.

Add mushroom soup and cook uncovered until heated through, about 15 minutes. serve over rice.

Drain and ﬂake tuna. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. serve as sandwiches or on lettuce with sliced tomatoes and carrots. serves 4. note: for a more ﬁlling salad, add 2 cups of cooked, chilled small-shell pasta.
